Notify Me stevo

This is a notification system for track changes.

Notify Me

Description

Notification system for the track changes.
 1. On OS X it will use Growl if installed.
 2. On Windows it will use Snarl if installed (Thanks to SongSnarl)
 3. On Linux using libnotify

On Windows and Linux if the required systems are not installed then it will default back to the alertService, which does not look very good right now but will be improved soon.

Work to be done:
 1. Improve windows support of SNARL (add registration etc).
 2. Improve default alert window if SNARL/libnotify are not installed.
 3. Make it so that when the alert is clicked it brings Songbird and the track into focus.

Release Notes

Added the libnotify service to linux builds.
Updated the notification so it does not fire when track changes but Songbird is paused.
Windows, OSX, Linux (32 and 64bit) builds.

Some people have had issues getting this to work on Ubuntu, I think you have to install the libglib1.2 package, I hope to fix that in the future.

Same problem here. Only the ugly default alert window is showing up, no snarl. Do I have to install/prepare something beside your add-on and the current snarl program?

@therealmorris, atreiu I only installed Snarl to get this to work, do you have any messages in the error console?

Don't know if this helps you: if i install SongSnarl Add-on, your add-on works too. Of course i then got 2 snarl-messages, which kind of make this workaround useless. But perhaps it helps finding the problem...

Same error message for me, and that "workaround" does work too

Still no snarl for me, and now not even the alert-toasters appear. It just does nothing. No error-message, either. :-/
I have to stick with SongSnarl, even when i like your add-on better, with album-art and ratings etc...

Please get this to work with snarl.

Having growl notifications (and other notifications for other systems) would be great. I've read the bug report and subsequent discussion on bugzilla, using the relevant mozilla library for this sounds great. Now it needs to be done.

Will this add-on be updated, or is it dropped in favor of (a future) core implementation?

The behavior is a bit odd when streaming tracks from a site like Hype Machine. It shows 0:00 as the track length.

florentv
florentv

Great extension. I hope it gets into Core at some point.

The track length is a bit strange because when starting a song it says 0:00 / 3:35 for instance, which gives you the song length and the information that you're at the start of the song, but is flawed usability-wise because the time doesn't change in the few seconds that the notification is shown (does not go from 0:00, 0:04 or 0:05, but stays at 0:00 even though the song is playing). If it were not for the notification at the end of a song, I would advise to remove the current time altogether.

@florentv Unfortunatly with Growl I don't know a way of updating the information in a notification box (not sure if there is one). With SNARL and libnotify I just have to work that in (future versions :) ).

@macat do you have the libnotify installed? It works for me on Ubuntu 8.10 with Songbird 1.0. But I have all the libnotify packages installed.

Same thing here, I want to use this addon very much, but cannot get it to work, neither by itself, nor with the Songsnarl. But SongNotifier works, but I just learn that it retrieves unavailable album artwork from last.fm, and I do not like that, since i already have mash tape scouring the web, plus... I like the flexibility that your addons usually bring, but man, I just cannot get a chance to test this one. I am using Songbird 1.0 on windows Vista.

I am getting an error in Ubuntu Linux, when starting Songbird, I get the following error message:

WARNING: NS_ENSURE_TRUE(mMediaItem) failed: file /home/steven/sbird/trunk/extensions/notifyme/components/sbINotifyMeService/src/sbNotifyMeService.cpp, line 220

I do not get any results from the Addon, I assume it is stopping at this error. The error keeps looping, while Songbird still functions.

XP_SP2, no SNARL, no notification.

I also want to suggest an idea. I don't know if it's possible but could you have it check the current feather for an image to use and maybe settings for coords of text items to. That way designers could make notify windows that correspond to their theme. If it doesn't find the info in the feather then it would use the standard methods.

Hi,
I changed max Version to 1.1.2 and I installed the plugin. I am using 9.04 and hoped that the plugin would work with the new cool notification system. But nothing happens.
libglib1.2 and everything concerning libnotify is installed. (with Tunderbird and Pidgin I am able to use the notification system).
Any help? :)

Works on Mac OS X 10.5.7 with Growl 1.1.4 -- after tweaking the Max Version in install.rdf.

One possible bug (feature?) though, a few seconds before the end of each track the notification pops-up with the current track details. I will see if I can track down / fix the bug (just getting started with extension development and browsing through the dev docs right now).

I followed selaeb's lead and changed the maxversion; seems to work perfectly in version 1.2. But seltaeb, I would have no problem with the option for enabling or disabling the notification that pops up at the end of the track. And also the ability to customize the information shown - for instance, the current playing time is not really necessary, nor is the rating (for me, at least). But either way, it's still the only Growl notification for OS X so I'll continue using it. Thanks a lot stevo and seltaeb.

By the way, if you don't want the notification again at the end of the song (seltaeb?), there is an option to disable it. You can only access it through about:config, though. Just switch songbird.notifyme.endtime.enabled to false, then restart Songbird.
