Adds a now playing list with ability to drag and drop songs into the queue
This extension allows you to queue up songs from the library into a collapsible pane on the right, and then play them as a playlist. You can also save the list as a playlist if you like.

Firstly THANKYOU everyone who tested this during the beta phase! There have been massive changes to the code that have gone into this, enough for me to bump the version to 0.6.x to 1.0. Basically to summarise I would say something like: less features, better code. (KDE 4.0 anyone?) What this means is that for a lot of you, this add-on won't do what you want it to. It also means that I'll be able to address this much more easier in the (near) future.

A great idea! Looking forward to it being fully done :)
Yea it's the function I always missed in songbird. Not yet fully ready but I think it has a great future :) work on waiting for progress ^^
hello :) Sure this is the beginning of a must-have extension, so I suggest you should intrenationalize it before there are so many new strings in the interface that it should appear too boring a work to manage. That is why I added a locale support to your extension, to be grabbed here http://goofy37.perso.cegetel.net/extensions/nowplaying_locale_support_en+fr.xpi I suggest you should submit it to http://www.babelzilla.org to get more locale languages for free (currently en-US and fr-FR added, since I am French, nobody is perfect). BabelZilla is a community of volunteer translators dedicated to the translation of extensions for moz family apps. We have people from all over the world currently maintaining translations for more than 450 extensions with an online translation system. You are welcome to hop on there :) Have a nice day - jean-bernard aka Goofy BabelZilla Team
Ouch it looks like I am 3 minutes late for new version!
Cool thanks. I didn't realise this sort of resource was available. I'll definitely check it out.
Ok this is the new version with locale support ;-) http://goofy37.perso.cegetel.net/extensions/nowplaying_locales_0.2.xpi
also in case you need to contact me GoofyFr[AT]gmail.com
Hi I tested your add on with the songbird 0.4pre and it works pretty fine for me, there is only one thing you have to change previously, there is no text displayed in the Play-list ;) maybe you can fix it her is a screen shot http://picasaweb.google.de/theonering1/Ffentlich/photo#5143127225333450962
Yep, that will be fixed with my next upload which will support 0.4. You'll have to wait a while though (not too long) because I'm also putting in a whole bunch of extra features with it. So sit tight.
Rockin' addon. The ability to save and randomize the list is really slick! The display pane support is great; I love being able to collapse/expand it when I want.
Very cool... love this one :) especially the randomize function (so I now have a good shuffle :P ) Version 0.1 isn't totally controlled by feathers any more... this results in a crazy look when not using the default feather. Maybe you can set the top and bottom of it so that they are colored automatically? for the rest... amazing job :-)
Probably my favorite add-on yet.
Whoa - This is cool!
WOHOOOOOO! That's what I was waiting for!!! big thx ;)
Grmpff!! Couldn't get it installed. Says it's not compatible with 0.4rc1 (20071217)!!! Help!
you could try to unzip the xpi change the line0.4pre*
to
0.4*
zip and rename to .xpi
now you should be able to install
Cool add-on. I missed that function in songbird. But there is still some room for improvement. It would be great if the applet shows the current played playlist if there isn't a custom playlist in the 'now playing'. And if you start playing with the playlist in the now playing screen, it doesn't fuck up your original playlist. Also I want that the songs that are already played in another color. (grey) Also it should be great if the playlist scrolls, so you don't see the songs that already played but one. I've already begun to change your add-on, but i'm rather noob. (So if you can do it quicker, don't wait for me)
Please update the plug-in so it works for 0.4rc1.
I don’t think version 0.1.1 works with Songbird 0.4rc2 even though it installs fine. The “Now Playing” list shows up on the right pane and I can drag and drop songs onto it, but they don’t enqueue. Songbird just keeps playing my media library in alphabetical order and totally ignores the “now playing” list. Am I using this add-on correctly or even understanding what it does correctly? I expect that if I add song to the now playing list, then after my currently playing song ends, the “now playing” list will play in order and then play whichever song would come next in my media library or current playlist. If I am mistaken about that, can I offer it as a feature suggestion for this or another add-on?
Also, it would be really nice if there was a hotkey to enqueue a song. For example, I could be scrolling through my playlist and just select a song and tap the ‘q’ key and that song would play next.
I hope this feedback helps. Thanks for making this add-on!
Try double clicking a song in the now playing list. It should behave as a normal playlist then. I would like it to implement what you described eventually though, possibly enabled through a future preference dialog. EDIT: Whoops! I was in such a rush to upload a new version, I uploaded a broken extension. Here's a new one: v0.1.1.5 Now double clicking should work
Thanks--it does work now!
Think the extension is great, have a couple of suggestions.
In the library’s artist, album, rating pannels it would be great if you could drag and drop one of these onto the now playing list. For example, you could drop a whole album on and that would queue up all the tracks songbird has of that album.
I feel something needs to be added to the hide option, as there is no quick way to get the pannel back if you just wanted to hide it for a moment. Could you make it so it has a minimise type option, so it just makes it very narrow with an expand button. That would make it very easy for people to turn off and on quickly.
Hope to see future versions, its looking good.
I am not the developer, but your suggestion is already a part of Songbird… If you click the so-called “grippy” in the middle of the resizer, it will collapse to the side of the screen. If you click the grippy again, it will resize to its previous state. Unfortunately the grippy seems to be invisible, but it is there.
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll see what I can do. Basically whatever the songbird developers make possible to drop onto a playlist node in the service pane, you can drop onto the list.
As for the minimise option, I don’t control the Display Pane feature, but this already exists. It’s not visible but the width of the pane is dragable and you can shrink it till it disappears, or you can just click it if you can find the exact centre with the mouse.
Hi,
I created a german translation for the now playing extension.
I translated description.properties, nowplaying.dtd, nowplaying.properties.
However, I still see the english labels.
Can you tell me how I can activate the translations.
Cheers,
Tom
go into the chrome.manifest file and copy and paste the line with en-US to some other line and replace the en-US’s with de-DE.
You could also register yourself as a translator on www.babelzilla.org for the extension, because with each release I may add or remove some strings.
Unfortunately this add-on doesn’t seem to work on my Bird along with the Bird’s french language pack. At every start-up an error message shows up telling me this :
[JavaScript Error: “undefined entity” {file: “chrome://jcm-nowplaying/content/xul/nowplaying.xul” line: 18 column: 1 source: “”&jcm.nowplaying.extensionname;""}]
When I restart the Bird with the English language pack everything works fine …
Quite annoying isn’t it ?
perfect! the playlist feature (with the drag and drop capability) was the one thing that i found lacking in songbird. It was the one thing that kept me from enjoying it fully and using it as my default player. Now i can!
The French translation has been updated and should work now.
I couldnt get this to work on the previous version, the overlay always failed on loading, i have no idea why. It works now, dont know what you have fixed but thanks!
After uninstalling Songbird and deleting my profile everything works fine. Thanks a lot for updating the French translation !
Hi there moshy,
I just want to congratulate you for this nice add-on but I don’t really have a use for it with the current set of features, that’s why I’m posting this here.
I come from Winamp and there’s a lot of features there that I think are wonderful and should be implemented in this add-on:
1) When you double-click a song in the library, all the songs you see at that time in the library, should be added (automatically) to the list. So, if you filtered by genre and double clicked a song in the library to play it, all songs in the library (the ones filtered by the genre selected) should be added to the list.
2) Another feature I really like in Winamp is how you can press the ‘j’ key while in the playling list and jump to a selected song. You just press the ‘j’ key or any other (even a button) and then all songs in the now playing list are displayed in a dialog (which you can filter by typing your search terms) and double-clicking a song will not change the current now playing list but will stop the current song and start the one you selected.
3) And to finish, another feature I like from Winamp is queues. I don’t think I need to elaborate much on that, but you simply select a song in the now playing list and press a key/button (‘q’ in Winamp) and that song is going to a queue of the next songs to be played, no matter what, that song is next. If nothing is in the queue, then it should play accordingly the other settings.
These are my suggestions and it’s something I’m really missing from SongBird and can’t really use SongBird as my main player without some important features like these (at least for me).
Hope to hear from you soon, commenting my ideas and I hope you like them so you can accomplish them :)
I agree, the extension can still be improved.
1. You are right, the “Now Playing List” doesn’t actually reflect what is now playing. I probably don’t want this feature to happen by default, because then it would be difficult to make custom playlists on the go. But yes as an option definitely. As a compromise so far, if the list is empty and you are playing say the library, then “Library” will show up as a little hyperlink thing that will allow you to start ‘editing’ it as a new playlist. It’s not the same and doesn’t copy filters and searches over though.
2. I think what you want is already built in. Click Ctrl+J and then select any playlist including “Now playing” and then search and jump to the song.
3. You can already drag and drop, right click->Add to playlist->Now playing, I don’t suppose a hotkey would be too hard to implement. As for getting the now playing list to play automatically after the current song finishes, I have actually already tried to do this–and failed so far. My problem is I have to make it play automatically when the song changes, but it is impossible to tell if the song is changing automatically or because the user made it change. If the user made it change to something specific, then that song HAS TO be next and not what’s in the queue. When I can fix this I’ll put this feature in.
Thanks for the input
1) I can deal with an option, as long as I can choose my own default way for the Now playing list to work, I’m ok with that :)
2) You’re right, I didn’t know that, thanks. Kinda slow though, in fact, the whole SongBird library is kinda slow searching/filtering. But will be probably get improved over time.
3) Yes, but I don’t want to drag-and-drop but I think you understood what I said. And I also understand the problem you’re having, I would help you if I knew anything about SongBird extensions developing, but I don’t. Hope you can find a way though, sometime… :)
Hello, I am using Windows XP and Songbird 0.4 (20071226)
I have 0.1.2 of your addon, but there is no “Now Playing” List under Playlists…
what do I have to do to get this added?
Thanks,
Terrence
There is a playlist, but it won’t show up in the service pane (the panel on the left). This is deliberate, otherwise you could theoretically delete it, which shouldn’t be possible.
Go to View→Right Sidebar→Now Playing to access it.
moshy, actually I cannot access it that way. These 3 screen shots show my Songbird:
This shows I have the latest version of your plugin:
http://tmp.livingcosmos.org/screendumps/songbird/addons-pic.bmp
This shows my version number on Windows XP Songbird:
http://tmp.livingcosmos.org/screendumps/songbird/about-pic.bmp
And this shows that there is no “Now Playing” pane to select for the right side–
http://tmp.livingcosmos.org/screendumps/songbird/whole-songbird.bmp
I have no idea what could be wrong then.
Try uninstalling it, then downloading it again.
Sorry.
Great add-on! I’ve been waiting for this functionality for awhile, even contemplated building it myself… but way too busy.
Anyway, I have some minor suggestions. The panel is a bit cumbersome. Lots of wasted real estate. For example, I moved the whole panel to the bottom pane so that I can add more columns such as artist, album, etc. So:
1) It would be nice to be able to hide the big black space that says “Custom Playlist, 11 items”.
2) Also, the bar at the bottom that says “Drag items here…” should maybe squeeze onto one line instead of three if there is enough space.
All in all, a much needed addition to this great player. I could never use iTunes because it lacked this feature.
Hey Moshy! Hope you still read these!
If you go look at the attachments to this bug:
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5746
There’s some sample code for adding extra context menu items to the playlist, there—and people are really asking for “Enqueue to Now Playing” menuitem.
:)
Very nice add-on, it’s really worth using :)
Win!
Havent been able to get this addon to work for ages, but the 0.3 update has fixed whatever wasnt working for me. Glad to have this back!
Using 0.5 RC2 btw
this looks like almost the kind of an extension i would need for songbird.
i have used winamp since i can remember and i love it. it’s just that i can’t get winamp for mac. so far this seems like the best alternative to the crappy itunes.
the thing i love most about winamp is the jump to file extra plug-in that comes with it. it’s so effortless enqueueing tracks with it and when it has played the tracks i’ve put into the queue, it continues to play the list normally. i love it and i hope that some day this extension for songbird would offer the same kind of effortless functionality. easy enqueueing, managing the queue and most importantly doing it within the playlist, so it doesn’t need to show a separate playlist for the files enqueued.
Also i want to say that i think it’s really cool that people develop these extensions. I would try to add functions i want too but i have no idea how to program anything.
Also what I’m wondering about is, why does it empty the list if you restart or shut the program or press stop (if you’ve installed the play/stop/pause buttons)? I spent a while putting some tunes there and now they’re all gone as i pressed stop. Same thing happened last night as I installed some extension and had to restart.
It would be very nice if you could make a choice so that it doesn’t clear the list unless you specifically clear it.
That clearing thing is a bug, 0.3.1 fixes that.
As for queuing, you can check ‘Play on queue’ in preferences, and it will work even if the list is hidden. Although there is no seamless transition in and out of the queue, which I believe is the real winamp-y feature that lots of people want.
gotta install the new version then. cheers for fixing the bug. :)
about the queuing:
have you thought about adding an option to have a number on the playlist for the tracks that are queued? like on winamp it puts a small number on the track queued on the playlist, indicating what position it has in the queue. that would be a nice little addition IMO.
managing the queue on your extension is really easy though. i really like that.
overall i really like songbird and with the aid of your extension i’m sure i’ll stop missing winamp at some point. =D
Running SongBird .5 (Mac OS X) and version 0.3.1 of playlist. Everytime I play a song these errors come up:
it still clears the now playing queue for me even though i installed the new version. first it worked, but not anymore. dunno what’s wrong as i haven’t made any changes anywhere or installed any other extensions.
@Sol6
I believe this is a problem with the Album Art Manager extension
@skip
The now playing list is only a temporary list and is not designed to be persistant across sessions. You should save the playlist and then reload it next time if this is what you want.
Brilliant plugin, this is definitely staying in my standard installed set of plugins. One thing though, this isn’t the type of thing that I would use all the time, but more when I’ve got some friends over and we’re hanging out and we want to throw a playlist together. Only problem is, it’s not very user-friendly to bring the Now Playing list up. It’s pretty unintuitive to go to View→Right Sidebar→Now Playing. It would be great if there were options to automatically bring up the Now Playling list in the pane of your choice whenever you click on any of the following within Songbird: 1) The ‘Playlist’ link on the in the Service-pane. 2) When right-clicking Playlist→New Playlist or just clicking the New Playlist button. 3) Right-clicking on a song and selecting Add to playlist→Now playing or Add to playlist→New playlist. This seems to me would make the interface of toggling the Now Playing pane much more user-friendly, since the hide button is quite easy to find already. Thanks for the great plugin.
FORGET THIS POST, this is not the good place and don't find how to suppress it
hello,
it was working ok till i install the now playing list add-on.
i think the two of us may not be compatible.
now, i only have the cover with the songbird logo, and not the cover of the playing song
bye,
there is a bug:
try adding a track number column and clicking the header to sort tracks. The sort order of tracks will change but not the order of track numbers.
songbird version: 0.5Would be nice:
to be able to drag artists and albums onto the Now Playing pane
I second that suggestion.
Great plugin! I always wanted to have a “now playing”-playlist that I can mess around with while listening to music
Just a couple of suggestions:
I would like to see a playlist-node in the menu on the left side. That way you don’t always have to have the “now playing” sidebar open but still have access to the list.
Additionally, I would like to see two other “queue…”-options in the rightclick menu: One that says “queue at the end of list” and a second one that says “queue after playing song”.
And lastly an optional behaviour on doubleclicks (I don’t know if extensions can intercept doubleclicks): Songbird should then dump the current playlist and add the current view (when browsing the library) to the playlist and start playing.
Think i might have found a bug, using 0.6rc2 on windows. When i have shuffle enabled and a song finishes playing another song is not started.
@moshy
See bug 10021 at bugzilla.songbirdnest.com.
This addon needs better clean up code for uninstallation
Good stuff.
I just noticed that if I add more than one track to the queue at once, the ‘Play’ icon stays a song ahead of what’s actually playing.
The “Add to Queue” button also takes up a lot of screen real estate which looks bad if you add a bottom panel. I don’t have any clever suggestions about where to put it though. Maybe make it optional in the prefs so you can only use the context menu to add?
@jasonhx
I’ve got no idea why the play icon appears at position No.2 It’s weird I know. I’m looking into it.
I also really don’t want that ‘Add to Queue’ button on the bottom, it just appears there even though I tell it not to. Hopefully in future versions of Songbird the way you add custom commands will become less hacky and that problem will magically go away..
In fact, now playing list is most usable in the “library” of Songbird, so why do we have it when we are on a web site? Can you do the same system like in Mashtape, a tool where you can chose if you just want “now playing” in library, or in others webpages.. ‘Cause, on my own, “now playing” uses much more space on songbird when surfin’ the web, and almost I do not use it when I’m (for example) on my mail page or somethin’..
kiss!
Is there an easy and quick way to add an album to the now playing list?
@moshy
I really like this plugin. I use it all the time.
Can you add an option for playback to stop when it gets to the end of the queued tracks?
I find that I often toss a few albums (+1 on the add-by-album feature req too) into the queue and go about my business… and I only know it has reached the end because it starts playing something I don’t recognize.
And since I’m voting, my screen geometry and usage habits make me want to see the queue all the time not just when I’m on a library view. I understand others may have other habits but I personally like the visibility rules just as they are.
Thanks again for writing this plugin.
Gonzo colors!
Can you set the max version to 0.8.0pre? Your version 0.5 has the max version set as 0.8pre, but to work with the nightlies the max version needs to be 0.8.0pre.
This extension is awesome... but is there a way to have it in the left sidebar (when viewing the library) like other music players have? It's not terribly practical for my uses to have it always open on the left panel.
I think this add-on is absolutely essential in songbird, so I have to thank you for al the work you've done.
Precisely because it's so essential (at least for me), I think there are a few things that should be improved. It's possible that some of them have already been mentioned above, but here are my suggestions anyway:
- The way I see it, every track I start to play from the library should immediately be added to the Now Playing List, just like the following ones. From that point on, the control of the playlist should be done from within the Now Playing List (changing the order of tracks, eliminating some of them, adding others) without affecting the library.
- It should also be possible to right click a song and choose "Play Now" (starting immediately, no matter if there's another track being played - this option would start a new playlist, erasing the prior), "Play Next" (scheduled to play after the current song) or "Play Last" (adds the song to the end of the current Now Playing List). these last two options would add new tracks to the Now Playing List, without erasing the current one.
- It is also my opinion that these options should be available directly from within the file directory: "Play Now on Songbird", "Play Next on Songbird" and "Play Last on Songbird".
- The Now Playing List should also keep the tracks already heard (for example changing its color), not only the one playing and the ones who follow. Currently it eliminates the songs already played, which prevents the user to go and check which tracks he heard.
- To finish this list, I think the tracks chosen for the Now Playing List in one songbird session should be there on the following. I mean that if I have to close songbird I would like to keep listening to my selection of tracks the next time I open it.
This is it. My suggestions have been made. I suppose there can be other points of view concerning these matters, but that's not a problem as long as the user has the ability to configure different options.
Thanks for paying attention and keep up the good work!
First of all, thanks for you job. This is a really good add-on.
However, there're some things that I don't like and those can be summarized saying that it's not really intuitive.
There is not such "ability to drag and drop" songs into the queue. The way I want this to work is: I play an album and I want to play another one at the end (or mix them with shuffle). I chose one album and drag another into the right pane and then, while this list is playing, maybe I want to add one song to the queue or add more songs to this list. This is how it works on WMP for example, and here is extremely difficult to do. Users have to make several roundabouts to get what they want.
Great addon!
One question: I'm currently making my first feathers and I want to change the color of the Now-Playing Icon (the arrow). Is this possible? Can I somehow replace the icon through feathers?
Thanks
setuju bos!
but i am thinking... queue list should be standard feature for songbird
Please, please consider fixing this. This is a perfect addon, but I wish that this option would be possible. http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/play_queue_troubles
This isnt a must have add-on for songbird!
This is a must have feature on the final release of thunderbird, i love to drag and drop musics on my playlist.
Since it's still a work in progress, i would suggest (if its possible) to make the now playing list available in the side menu, above the library. I noticed theres a play queue, but i cant drag and drop there o.o
If you could work together with the songbird team, that would really make a great contribution to the project.
nice add-on but I don't understand why are songs removed from the playing queue when i change the playing music...
Hi,
I have a few suggestions which would increase for me the usability of Songbird dramatically.
1) Currently you have 3 playlists available - Custom Playlist, Media Library and Play Queue. I would add a dropdown box where I could select these predefined playlists and also add new ones. Of course the content of these playlists must be remembered between sessions.
2) If you doubleclick on a track in Media Library, now it has 2 different behaviors. Clicking on filter panel does nothing, doubleclick on a track starts playing it immediately. Insted of this I would like to see the track or whole genre/artist/album added at the end of current or default (based on user's choice) playlist. Also on right click menu should be 3 options - add to end (the same as doubleclick), add next (insert after currently playing track) and start playing now (insert after currently playing track and start playing it).
3) In the playlist you should be able to queue songs. I prefer to have this functionality on middle button (wheel) click. These tracks should be marked with a number displaying their position in queue.
4) If a song starts playing, the playlist should scroll down to the track and highlight it. If a song is highlighted by cursor (single click) it should start playing after the current one finishes. This functionality is in foobar2000 and it is called "cursor follows playback" and "playback follows cursor".
5) It is only a graphical suggestion. But I would like to see grouping by albums. I think Amarok 2 does this nicely, see this demo. Also EL Playlist (component for foobar2000) does i nice, see here or here.
I already posted these suggestion in this topic. But I was told to repost it here too, so I'm doing it. ;-)
Thanks for attention. If you have any questions or unclear points, please let me know. Also if you don't understand the concept behind this or if you don't know what would it be good for, I'll be glad to explain it.
i would like to have the mode-button disappeared, because my screen resolution is not so high and i need the space. the mode could be set in the settings menu.
an other good feature would be to add with a double-click in the library the song to the playlist and not to play this song immediately.
There is a weird issue in "Play Queue" mode with the little speaker icon. Kindly check
Bug 12465
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=12465
Confirmed by Songbird QA
Another feature suggestion:
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=12487
I'm in agreement with manu: "an other good feature would be to add with a double-click in the library the song to the playlist and not to play this song immediately."
I also would like to see a keyboard shortcut to add a song to the Queue. I am a heavy keyboard user and really like shortcuts for everything.
Please update this for RC2!!
What about while pressing Alt or Ctrl And click on the song, it will add to the Queue. Like Winamp. Is faster and more confortable than double-click
Will you update it to 1.0.0rc2?
I sure miss it
version bump, pleeeeeeeeease! :)
OK there's too many things to address in this little comment box. You can read this though, which addresses many people's concerns.
I will talk about hotkeys though because they are important. I tried to do them, but the code didn't work and I don't know why. As soon as I can get it working I'll put it in.
thanks a lot!
If you queue up a song before the Now Playing List exists (Like on the first run, before you play any songs) i think it makes songbird crash.
Glad to see the update!
Hello,
Thanks for the update. Though it's crashing on me: everytime I get to the last song in the Now Playing list, then to the next song, a message will pop in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out (you get what I mean). It says: “No URI handler implemented for"songbird-medialist"”. I have to force-quit Songbird if it doesn't crash by itself.
Please note that this only happens when in Shuffle mode. When Shuffle is off, things work ok.
I disabled this extension for now until there's a fix.
Platform: Songbird 1.0 RC2 on OSX 10.5.5
Thanks again for your work. :)
Ok, I've never seen either of those two things happen.
@cellarmation
How are you queuing up songs, with the context menu Queue Next/Last or by drag and drop.?
@florentv
Are you talking about getting to the last song in queue mode? (does is say 'Play Queue' at the top or 'Custom Playlist')
Were you playing any other playlist before hand?
@Both of you
What are the exact steps to reproduce this?
I have the same bug as florentv reported, exept it even happens when not in shuffle mode.
I am under debian GNU/Linux x86_64.
To reproduce the bug:
start songbird, select a song and select "play next". At the end of the song the music will stop and a "Mediacore Error" will pop-up saying
“No URI handler implemented for"songbird-medialist"
[ ] Do not display further mediacore errors"
And it seems that they are tons of boxes!
Then the only way out is by killing the application.
Ok, I think I got it.
Cheers!
Ok, I think I got it.
Cheers!
Looks like it's fixed for me with. Many thanks for this add-on and for the quick fix. :)
I have used this addon and was using it before without problems, but had not used it lately until this recent update. So... I tried this recent version and my Songbird freezes on my initial attempt to play a song on Songbird startup.
The problem goes away when i remove this addon.
For a while there i could have songs play now and then, but it has gotten progressively worse and now does not allow me to play anything at all.
So, I keep having to let windows shut it down.
One clue when I start it up now, is that the media views icon next to the media search is usually grayed out. When that happens, I know it won't start for sure... which incidentally is all the time now :(
@deomega
I get this too, which means that something has definitely changed in Songbird itself in-between RC2 and RC3. I honestly cannot say how long it will take to get the add-on working again. Sorry.
@moshy
no problem at all. Thanks for looking into it. I will be patient.
Hi.
I'm using this Add-On and I'm very glad I found it.
It's exactly what i needed.
Now, I'm using a black skin theme and it would be nice if I could have the 'custom playlist' part of the playlist in black as well. as of now, it's gray with blue text in it.
Why does it have to be that big anyway? Why does it have to be there anyway? Isn't it more like something that could be selected from the dropdown menu?
I've uploaded a fix for the crashing (fingers crossed), please test it
Thanks!
Sorry Moshy, it still crashes.
Damn!
Fresh profile and all that? Any extra add-ons?
Moshy.. No fresh profile.. And the only extra addon I had that caused me to wonder about the incompatibility, was this one: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1356
But I doubt it. I brought it up there first, thinking that may have been the culprit. I will do a new profile when 1.0 launches and try again... though I am sure there are many that won't want to do a new profile.
You know.. I am having some problems with media showing etc since the RC3.. so, maybe this could also resolve itself after the next release? Here is my conversation:
I have been having some problems with the ‘Now Playing’ addon.
Deomega: "I have been having some problems with the ‘Now Playing’ addon.
I uninstalled it and so far may hold off from it, but my problem now, is that, if i have the album art in the left lower column to be displayed by ‘now playing’ as opposed to by ’selected’… it flashes the album art but it then disappears and shows the drag album artwork here..."
PVH: "I’m afraid that’s a known issue that was resolved just a little too late to make it into RC3 but it will be fixed in the next RC (or Final)."
I'm sorry I can't reproduce this, what are your exact steps.
the problem for me right now is straightforward... Songbird running fine.. I then install 'now playing list' addon... restart songbird. Then i try to play any song in my library... the program stops responding, and have to be shutdown by windows. I restart and try to play again, same thing.. so I uninstall the addon, and songbird works.
Moshy,
I went ahead and re-installed Songbird all over... Clean..... even deleted my profile.
The crash problem still exists.
...
I've taken it down again.
This is pissing me off!
Sorry.
Moshy,
I am sorry too man, and I kinda understand.. but I would like to encourage you to maybe wait for the next RC or release of Songbird, because, there seems to be something sinister in RC3.
I hope if anyone else out there using this and having problems, would post.. or post if you are NOT having issues. But again, somehow, I am beginning to suspect that it is related to RC3, and not just this addon itself.
I second all the requests for different double-click behavior -- I would much prefer to add the double-clicked track to the end of the queue, rather than replacing the current track. (Ctrl-click to queue would also be acceptable).
Hi Moshy!
I just wanted to say that I posted a huge text concerning Now Playing List at getsatisfaction:
http://gsfn.us/t/ltz
Please give it a look and keep up the work!
Any idea when this will be supported in the v1.0.0 release? I've just started using Songbird recently, and this addon is probably THE most important thing that its missing at the moment.
The lack of a "now playing" list is actually the one reason that I might dump Songbird and go back to WinAmp. So I'm suuuuuuuper keen to use this add-on.
This is the one missing piece of the puzzle for Songbird to compete with iTunes, IMO. I REALLY appreciate the developer's efforts in creating this, and I hope the add-on can be back online as soon as possible.
Not sure whether it does this now (since I can't install in Songbird 1.0), but my request would be to populate the list automatically from a playlist like Party Shuffle does in iTunes. I would pay money to have ths feature.
Thanks!
why i couldn't install this add-on???
i use the newest version of song bird but it doesn't avaiable...
Gimbar
Is there a MAC version coming anytime soon?
In the next version, it would be nice to function like the que in Winamp, that is, whenever you start playing a song in the library, it adds it to the list. This kind of works with the now playing feature, but you cant drag and drop. That would be quite nice.
I love the concept, but this locks up Songbird for me. Anytime I click on a track to play or try to “Play Queue” Songbird freezes. I tried changing options, but no effect. I’m running 1.0.0 in Vista.
I'm saying the same problems as mark32. Using it on 1.0.0 on Vista64 bit, and whenever I try to play a song, or queue one up, it just freezes songbird. I hope a fix can come soon as I really enjoyed this feature on winamp, and was the only reason I never really looked for any other players.
- rubyji
There is already a partyshuffle add-on for songbird =0)
This is truly the most important add on, and something that must be integrated to songbird right away.
For anyone interested: Modify the extension yourself. Unzip the .xpi, use 7zip http://www.7-zip.org/ , then modify install.rdf to: REMEBER: LESS THAN AND GREATHER THAN SYMBOLS TAKEN OUT DUE TO HTML
change
em:version 0.6.1 /em:version
to em:version 0.6.2 /em:version
THEN:
change em:maxVersion 1.0.0rc2 /em:maxVersion
to em:maxVersion 1.0.0 /em:maxVersion
Now, highlight the folders "chrome","defaults","components" and the files "chrome.manifest" and "install.rdf" then right click, 7zip, add to archive... then change the file name from: "nowplaying-0.6.2.zip" to "nowplaying-0.6.2.xpi" but be sure to use the default ZIP file settings, not 7z settings. It might say 7z at first, change it to use ZIP.
Remember, this is a cheap way of doing it and could screw up your songbird. Don't do it if you can wait.
By doing this, I do encounter crashes but I can use it quite often. Not really sure why it crashes but it crashed the first time I used it (so give it more than one try) from last night and then it crashed again when I started today. So it seems to need a warm up crash.
Thanks, BJEagle, I did discover the Party Shuffle add-on later yesterday - but it's also not available for 1.0! Ack. :-(
Hope you get the problems sorted out. As said before, this is the one thing missing that will make Songbird a complete player. Keep up the great work and Ill be waiting for the day this is up and running.
- Moshy
Dude!
Thank you man for this awesome add-on =0), it really does the trick for me. Thank you for your time to develop this add-on you really make a lot of people happy =0). Im looking forward to what the future brings.
I sooo need it for 1.0 release!
working just great on OS X songbird 1.0
I don't like how it deletes the finished songs, I usually decide whether to save a play list or not after I've heard it.
I see how it could be useful, but maybe you could have an option for it in the preferences?
it causes songbird crash on Play action, in v1.0.0, Build 860 :(
and it seems that's a known issue, now!
Fantastic. This plugin actually makes Songbird worth using. I can't believe it's not a standard feature. Keep up the great work. :)
can someone provide the link to download the xpi instalatio file?
stupid i? found it - it's: http://addon-files.songbirdnest.com/xpis/2162/nowplaying.xpi
This is such a great feature! Would love to see it updated to the latest release!
Yes, please, update for latest release! This is one big thing missing in songbird.
please, could it be include by the developer in the next release, this is the last big missing feature
The right-click options only appear in the library, not the lists. For example, you can't choose "queue next" from the "recently added" list. Is there any reason the options shouldn't be added in all contexts?
I just got an auto-update for version 0.6.2 which seems to be working on the latest Songbird version, has this just been updated but it just hasn't shown up on the site? I'm pretty sure it doesn't gracefully coexist with my (much less popular) addon so I'm pretty keen to know if everyone is going to be installing this ...
hi moshy,
this will be really helpful paired with the album view, since it no longer has an album list feature. good luck! :)
Forget about my question, I didn't see the link in the description.
This DEFINITELY should be a standard feature.
Yes, definitely should be a standard feature.
Anyway, I hope we'll get an update for 1.0 compatibility in the not-too-distant future.
I am using Songbird 1.0.0, Build 860 (20081124135419) and can't get your addon to work. I haven't installed any other add-ons and this is a fresh install of Songbird. Any advice?
When I show the right sidebar and try to drag-n-drop to the sidebar, nothing happens?
This plugin is AWESOME, thanks for the "save" button and the dynamic playlist !
But !... I've used it yesterday without problem on my updated SongBird but like "ppmaster", it does not work on a fresh install !
PLEASE ! Is it possible to allow it to install on the last SongBird ?
Version: Songbird 1.0.0, Build 860 (20081124135419)
Thanks a lot and continue the REALLY good job !!!
A version compatible with Songbird 1.0 is available now here. I didn't want to upload it officially yet because past versions have been known to cause crashes. If nobody reports any problems then I'll put it up here as well.
The new version works fine for me:
My OS: winXP
major other addons:
directory browser
media flow
album view3.0
fasterbird
focus track
birdtitle
Nice work_looking forward to your major update
i've tried the new version of the addons and it works really fine too.
I use Songbird 1.0.0, Build 860 (20081124135419) in a XPpro computer.
Thanks for your work!!! ^^
Hi moshy,
I would like to suggest for a simple feature to the rightclick menu, where you already added "queue next" and "queue last"
since I listen usually to complete albums and only use the mouse not the keyboard.
It would be perfect to have a "select all" -option
I know this would then need two clicks to enqueue an album,
but 2 additional menu entries "queue all next" and "queue all last"
would probably be to much.
Of course queuing directly in the filter panels /album by right-clicking view would be the final goal, but probably also more bug-prone.
Hello Moshy,
Thanks for your work again. I've tried 0.6.3 with Songbird 1.0.0 (build 860) on OS X, and it doesn't crash the software, but there are a few quirks:
- I play a song from my library, then add a few songs to the queue (Now Playing List special playlist). Then when the song I was playing stops, or when I go to the next song, the first song in Now Playing List is played (good), but LyricsMaster and Notify Me think I'm playing a different song, from my library (bad).
- Second song from the queue: sometimes the notification and lyrics are right, sometimes they're one song ahead in the queue.
- I think sometimes the last song in the queue is played twice.
- It didn't happen when I tested the extension for the first time, and maybe for the second time too, but after that I found that I couldn't get away from the queue. The last song would not disappear, and would play over and over and over, even though the repeat preference was set to no-repeat or to cycle all (not to cycle one, I checked). I had to deactivate the extension to be able to play anything else than that one last song (even restarting wouldn't help).
I'm using Songbird 1.0.0, Build 860 on XP and the install button is still gray. Any reason why others can download it but I can't?
Nevermind I got it to work.
nice work, thank you!
I am sorry, bu i had the first crash, or something like that.
When i first started SB after installing your add-on, i got a message, that some add-ons could crash the SB, if i dont change the language to english.
Using Songbird 1.0 on Mac OS X, language is german.
Switched to english, it seems to work well.
Would be nice if you could fix this problem.

same problem on my winxp machine.

Just got the same "no uri" error mentioned above with today's upgrade (using the stable SB release). Had to force-kill SB with taskmgr in WinXP.
For "phoinox1289": To download the ultimate version of Now Playing compatible with SongBird 1.0.0 click here: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/attachment.cgi?id=9293 (link available for Moshy). Good luck.
I have a question.
There are any posibility to songs that've played don't be erased from "Now Playing List" ??
Thanks ^^
Hi Moshy!
Thanks for the update. I haven't tested it properly, but I can see things are getting way better.
There's a but, though. I don't know if this has happened with anyone else, but for me everytime I try to stop playback it just freezes SB. I get a message (that I didn't memorize - sorry) that seems to be constantly refreshing and SB stops to function. At this moment I have to open task manager and force it to stop. I don't know if this matters, but I'm on Vista.
Thanks again for your work!
Yes i also tried the new version... Songbird and the plugin behave as expected until the last song in the now playing list was played... After that CPU raises. Terminal gave me no useful information about what is happening but Error Console seems to encounter a loop or s.th.:
[...]
Error: GStreamer error: No URI handler implemented for "songbird-medialist". Additional information: gsturidecodebin.c(828): gen_source_element (): /player/uridecodebin154

Is there a way to implement the possibility to change the metadata in the playlist pane? Also, it is not possible to change the order of the the columns (title, artist etc).
Thanks for the nice add-on, though!!!
Tried the new version on Windows XP.
Seems to be a slight problem at the end of a playlist where it plays the last song on the list, but Songbird thinks it is playing something else. Also how does one delete individual songs from the list?
Apart from that very nice work. I've been dying for this feature.
Damns now I'm getting some crashes occasionally.
I'm getting an error too, as seen here: http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sbnpmediacoreerrorsp0.jpg
Yeah, still crashing at the end of every playlist for me.
Hi, I'm very new to Songbird, but it seems really great. The only feature i really miss is this one ^^
But how do i install it? The install button is grayed out.
I'm using 1.0.0, Build 860 on Vista 64bit.
Mikael if you scroll up in the comments a little they've posted a link to it.
(it's http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/attachment.cgi?id=9293)
I would love if I could add songs from a playlist to the queue. I don't usually use the library so if that function was implemented this would be my all-time favorite plug in to Songbird :)
Hi everyone!
I do know about the issue with what happens when you reach the end of the playlist, and it seems to be a problem with the core that is causing it to happen, which makes it much harder to fix. The best I can suggest is that you do not use queue mode, I am aware that this may make it not worth using at all though.
I haven't uploaded a new version properly yet because 1. the crashing problem when it reaches the end of the playlist is hard to fix, and 2. because I am concentrating my efforts on a complete rewrite which is now only possible because of the changes going into the future Songbird 1.1.
This rewrite is going to change the way the addon works completely, i.e. no more annoying 'modes'. You can read about the exact behaviour I hope to implement here.
Thanks!
Thanks for the update on the situation :)
Hi, moshy. Thanks for a great extension! 0.6.3 is rock-solid for me on Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit.
I posted a "bug" here, though it's a minor one. The executive summary is: it would be nice if dragging and dropping from the file system to the Now Playing List updated the Recently Added smart playlist as well. At the moment, it adds the dragged media to the library, but they don't get added to Recently Added unless an explicit import scan is performed.
Excellent!
I've been looking for a plug-inn like this... it's one on the mayor issues that doesn't make Songbird my main music player... I still using Mediamonkey.
Thank you!
Thanks alot for this update
But I get a lot of errors using the latest nightly (from today)
when hiding/showing the now playing panel
Error: this._innerTreeView is null
Source File: chrome://nowplaying/content/bindings/sequencedPlaylist.xml
Line: 151
- Adding one song to the panel is ok, adding another song will duplicate the entry with the previous song... Hiding/Showing the panel seems to display the right list again
HELP!
I'm on Songbird "Version: Songbird 1.0.0, Build 860 (20081124135419)" and the install button is grayed out?! Why? It's complaining that I'm not on the right version of Songbird!
ARGH! Why can't I delete previous comments! lol. OK, I found the comment about the ver. for 1.0.
Installing...
@klint
Thanks! Try the new one out
@moshy
Thanks a lot, it works far better.. I have notice no other issue so far :)
great future plans! can't wait to get my hands on the songbird 1.1 final and this add-on. May be able to get rid of every other media player at last! =)
hello
going on with the tests, I have found that I can move elements once they are in the pane, the drag icon appears, but the element in not moved. No error in the console though.
Thanks
@klint
If you do that, it's not supposed to change to order of the underlying playlist, just the order it's going to play through. Is this what's happening?
@moshy
I don't understand: it works here at work, but not at home . I will test there on a fresh profile again! Thanks anyway :)
@moshy
hello again
Twice the same happened: when opening sonbird, I got the now playing playlist fed with many records of the same song. Restarting SB did clear it.
Which leads me to another issue :
Right click on an element in the list shows a "Remove" entry (Supprimer in French), but as it is the same entry as the right click in the library, I suppose it will remove the song from the library. Of course, it won't, but I think the entry should be renamed as "Remove from the Now Playing list". What do you think?
Thanks
Thanks
This entry is misleadingn I
Hi again and again
I'm too lazy to create a new profile, but here is a scenario I''ve reproduced many times:
- Start SB
- Fill in the NPL panel by adding some songs
- Go to the NPL panel and rearrange the songs by drag&drop there
- THE SONGS ARE NOT REARRANGED ON THE SCREEN
- Click on one of these songs in the NPL to play it
- Then, suddenly, all the changes you had done before in step 3 are now displayed correctly
Plus there seem to be a problem with the Last Track Resume extension: when this one is installed, weird things happen on my NPL panel when restarting SB after playing a song before closing SB.
Hope this helps
@klint
Just to confirm, your problem with the same track repeating over and over, are you using Last Track Resume? Is this immediately as soon as songbird starts?
@moshy
Yes, that is when using LRT. And it is immediately.
I think it would also be cool if the now playing list had album artwork next to the tracks so you could visually see what tracks are in the list. It could look almost identical to this: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/... (the lastfmSidebar addon). Tracks would take up more room, but I never have too many tracks queued up in the list anyway, so I think it would work fine.
Just found out about that plugin. Two feature requests:
- the ability to remove the id column
- Right menu entries to go the artist lastfm page.
Thanks for your great work
When's the 1.1b compatible version slated to come out? Or is it already out there somewhere and I just can't find it?
@moshy
Can you look at this:
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15419
This sounds as a Now Playing List problem(disabling the add-on solves it).
If there is another bug opened for this, feel free to duplicate.
Thanks.
@benexclaimed
It's out, except 1.1b1 is too old to use it, you have to wait for the second Songbird beta.
I updated to the latest nightly solely to install this add-on. A few problems, though:
First, any time I attempt to play a song from the "Now Playing" list, I'm given this error:
playlist.xml - onPlaylistClick - [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE) [sbIMediacoreSequencer.sequencePosition]" nsresult: "0x80040111 (NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://nowplaying/content/bindings/sequencedPlaylist.xml :: anonymous :: line 182" data: no
That doesn't happen if I play it directly without using the extension. Also, I wonder if there's a way to make it so that Mashtape can go across the length of the bottom of my Songbird window while the Now Playing list only takes up part of the right side. Does that make sense?
Sorry for the double post, but I'd also like to mention that whenever I select anything in the filter pane, that selection automatically replaces the Now Playing list. I assume this is something that can probably be changed through the options menu, but that's blank.
I have the same problem as you benexcalimed.
playlist.xml - onPlaylistClick - [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsITreeView.getCellProperties]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://songbird/content/bindings/playlist.xml :: _onPlaylistClick :: line 1788" data: no]
Same here....
Excellent addon...Must have for SB.
Re: filter selection replacing the list
This is actually by design (for the moment). You'll find that even without the add-on installed, if you change the filter on a playing playlist, subsequent tracks will be from the newly filtered playlist. Therefore I update the now playing list accordingly to reflect this fact. If you are editing a custom playlist then this won't happen of course.
Re: playlist click error
This is a known issue. You can track the bug here. It is probably another symptom of this core bug, which if so, is out of my hands.
Oh, I see- but isn't the purpose of the now playing list that it maintains a list so that you navigate your library and look at other albums/artists and not mess up what is playing? The way it is now, the now playing list is never any different from the list of songs of the album/artist that I already have selected, so it seems like there is no point.
Hi
I have to agree with tdmurphy: for me the Now Playing list should stay independent from any filter activated to search for songs...
The only ways this NPL should be filled in are, IMHO:
- when I play a song from a filter in the library, this song must be added as the now playing song in the NPL, obviously
- when I drag and drop/move a song or a set of songs to the NPL manually
And if I really want to drop an entire filter, it is very easy: I just Select All + Drag&Drop them in the list
But if each time I'm using a filter and play a song from it, the current NPL is flushed and replaced by the filter, it's getting rather useless...
Sorry, but could you revise this part of the design?
Thanks in advance
And of course, the NPL should be flushed only by a manual action (or by playing the songs in it, of course).
Just wanted to chime in with my agreement with tdmurphy and klint on this issue. Thanks for the awesome add-on!
Hello again
Still about the same issue, probably another side-effect of the current behaviour: after starting SB, the NPL is empty. Then playing just one song from the library pane (with the 3 column-filters set to "All") will add the whole library to the NPL. Not really understable!
I understand all this is in line with your specs at http://nowplayinglist.mozdev.org/drupal/blog/Future-Directions, topics #1 and #3 more precisely.
The problem is actually focused in the "double-click" of a song in the library (or in another list).
Maybe a 'simple' option in the extension's options would please everyone, you and us :-) ! This setting would allow to choose the effect of the "double click" action on a song in the library (or in another list). I would see 5 different behaviours:
- just play the song and replace the NPL with the current filter result (as of now)
- add the song as "Next in the queue"
- add the song as "Last in the queue"
- replace the currently played song in the queue (stops the current song and remove it from the queue)
- raise a pop-up and ask the user which option he wants, among the 4 previous ones
What do you think?
Thanks
Olivier
now that i grabbed the second beta, i can finally have this! great add-on, much needed =)
Believe me I intend to extend the way playing songs work, but since this is such a fundamental rewrite I've really stripped it down so I can focus on getting a stable base to work off.
Hi Moshy
No problem! You've done a very helpful work and I really appreciate it. Thanks.
I'll be waiting for the next step quietly :)
Using the latest SB beta plus the latest Now Playing Add-on, WinXP. So long as I keep adding tracks while the now playing list is still active, it works well. If the player gets to the end of the list and stops, and *then* I attempt to add a bunch of tracks, unexpected behavior occurs -- instead of the 10, 20, etc., tracks I have chosen to add, one track is added 10, 20, etc., times, and it is a track that was already on the now playing list.
hi there! when will you update "now playing" for the latest songbird release?
keep up the good work! thx mate
Like the feature. Keep it up. And thanks!
there is an bug with other languages (for me german)
When i activate this Add-On and go to the "Add-ons"-Menü songbird Crash
Sorry for my bad english ;)
Options menu supposed to be blank? When the playlist is empty and I click a song, it loads my entire library. Any way to change this? Great add-on, though! Keep up the good work!
I really just don't get the new version of this add on. What is the purpose?
I install Songbird, I install Now Playing List, I restart, I play a song...all the songs visible in the library viewer get put into Now Playing List!?
What is this functionality for? So the list basically just shows what is shown in the media browser? That isn't necessary, the media browser does this!
Where is the ability to drag a song over and queue it up into the Now Playing List? This seems now impossible, as all the songs from whatever view you choose in the media browser are automatically put into the list.
I'm honestly at a loss for knowing what this add on is now for? What's the point.
All I want out of a Now Playing List is what the early versions did: provide a list of songs, completely separated from the media browser's functions/views, to which I can easily queue up songs to play, maintaining a list of "songs playing next" and also the song currently playing.
I was under the impression this was the point of this add-on...but clearly things have changed.
Can someone please explain to this far-from-novice user why this add-on now exists?
Hello,
First of all I really like this extension. The obnly thing I don't understand is what this is an add-on and not a default feature in Songbird.
But I'm not sure to understand what happened with the latest upgrade : no more song list and no more preferences for the add-on (only a blank page). I hope that this is a bug (and surely it is) and that the behavior of the add-on will come back to normal on the next release... Or am I wrong ?
Best Regards,
I think my previous message is not that clear... What I meant by "no more song list" is exactly what fishe describes in his comment.
This add-on doesn't work correctly with the German language pack.
This extention is nearly an essential already! There are still two basic features missing
1. safe the playlist - catch the doubleclicks
a 100times is not enough that a quick dobleclick destroys the playlistorder. Having a party, people like to choose a song and every second windows user dobleclicks his favorit song followed with a big:"ups, I m sorry"
A dobleclick in the "titel" frame should put the title at the end of the "now playing list", not less, not more. The same with Genre, Interpret, album
2.safe the songs
Especially on partys the posibility to get a "delete option" on right click is no good. Well, I could save my own musik by read-only. But people tend to bring there one collection, plug in and are sad if s.o. changes (I guy using itunes once changed the format to mp3 or s.th.) of loosing.
An "unable the delete option" is importend - an alternative - "put in the do not use on partys folder" would be exelent
a part from this songbird could become the best I know. Platform independent etc.....
Please save "now playing" from dobleclicks,
let dobleclickers wait like al them before ;-)
thx

The German locale has been updated, except you won't notice it because there are no preferences available anymore.

I'm aware that this doesn't meed everyone's needs anymore i.e. preferences, double click behaviour. This stuff will be coming back in the next release. Sorry.

Hi there,
An addition to the issue fishe described a couple of posts earlier.

Having all the songs in your npl-pane that are visible in your current library-focus, like fishe said: when you search for a song in your library the npl-pane gets "searched" too. And when the song you're looking for is not in the npl, it get's filled up with the very first song in your library.
Here's a screenshot:
I searched for some song that is not in the npl so it fills the list with 13th Floor from Outkast, which is the first song in current library-sort
Thanks for working on this, moshy!
This add-on has improved a lot in the last months. :)
One of the things I'm not very satisfied with is the randomize function:
1. a little bug: the default "Shuffle"-Button is disabled by your add-on on Songbird-start, but it is re-enabled when you switch a feather.
2. as i was able to enable it with this bug, I noticed that it is still working, and imho it is even better working than the "randomize"-button of your Add-on. Because if I use your randomize button, while I'm playing a song, all songs above the playing Song are marked as "already played", even when they are not played yet. With the default Shuffle button, the currently playing Song will always jump to the top, which is more intuitive imho.
Thanks, this add-on is very helpful. I'd like to request the ability to drag and move upcoming tracks around and the ability to remove tracks from the now playing list.
Great add-on, but when I start playing an artist, whatever was in view when I clicked on whatever song I choose should go into the list and not change until I click to play something else.
Found a bug - dragging an album from the filter pane to now playing does nothing.
Hi fishe,
What OS are you running? I get the exact same behaviour on Songbird 1.1.1 and Linux.
Clicking on a track in the bottom pane list just dumps everything in the bottom pane into the 'Now Playing' list.
Ergo, you double-click on an album to start playing the first track of an album, and the whole album suddenly appears in the Now Playing box. Can't modify the Now Playing list at all.
Alex
@hachel
Sorry I can't get this, when I search for something that doesn't exist either nothing happens in the now playing list if it says 'Custom Playlist' or it empties because nothing matches the search term if it says 'Now Playing'. Are you doing anything different?
@atreiu
Yeah the shuffle button does work, but I was finding way too many edge cases where it be buggy, so I disabled it for when it is showing 'Custom Playlist'. In past versions the randomise button's job was to physically move the items around so when you saved the playlist, it would be in a truly randomised order. Nowadays because I show the tracks in the order they are going to play anyway the difference between shuffle and randomise is somewhat meaningless. I would much rather get rid of the randomise button entirely and never disable the shuffle button in future versions. thanks
@rubyji
It's odd that you can't do this already. Does drag and drop not work? Is there a remove option in the right-click menu?
@jackflapb/fishe
In the next major release, probably 1.1, preferences are going to come back and i'll probably have something like:
Choosing a track for playback should:
1. Start playing the chosen track. Replace the contents of the now playing list with the chosen playlist. (What happens now)
2. Start playing the chosen track. Insert the track at the top of the now playing list.
3. Continue playing the current track. Queue the chosed track to be played next. Insert the chosen track after the currently playing track in the now playing list.
4. Continue playing the current track. Queue the chosen track to be the last track played. Insert the chosen track at the end of the now playing list.
Hopefully this will make everyone happy.
Problem described above is now confirmed fixed in 1.0..
("If the player gets to the end of the list and stops, and *then* I attempt to add a bunch of tracks, unexpected behavior occurs...")
Hi moshy,
Thanks for the response.
However, the problem isn't the bahaviour of double-clicking on a track, it's the fact you can't actually add or remove tracks from the now playing list on linux.
So you can click on an album, and it will show up in the list, but you can't actually drag more tracks from your library into the now playing list, remove tracks or even move any tracks around in the now playing list.
This pretty much negates the use of the now playing list altogether.
This is what happens in Ubuntu 8.10 with Sonbird 1.1.1 and Now playing 1.0 and 1.0b2. It works as expected in WindowsXP though.
Thanks again,
Alex
@jackflapb
Oh really, that's strange because I develop it on linux. I've filed a bug for this here, do you have a bugzilla account? Is there anything appearing in the error console when you try to move tracks?
thanks.
@moshy
I also have had this kind on problem on winXP with SB1.1.1 and NPL1.0: the NPL was frozen, no drag and drop allowed (when dragging, the "forbidden" icon would appear).
The problem disappeared I don't know how, by restarting Songbird I think, and did not appear again since.
Olivier
Hi Moshy,
Thanks very much for this addon its great. I would like to request that when you add new songs to the custom playlist it does not flick back up to the top of the list each time. It would be great if it just stayed where it was. It does not really matter for short playlists but can be a bit annoying for long ones.
Thanks!
moshy, thanks for replying. So it seems the behaviour I was describing is a bug?
Like jackflapb's issues as well, I can't move anything to the playlist. The NPL just literally mirrors whatever is in the main/bottom viewport of the media library...rendering the NPL pointless.
I'm OS X 10.5.6.
Yeah it's a bug. I thought you were referring to the fact that clicking a song in main window will reset the pane, which is by design for the moment. But provided you don't do that then yes, you should be able drag and drop tracks around in the pane and remove them. Is there anything appearing in the error console when you try to do this? (Tools > Error Console)
Thanks
Keep up the good work. IMHP the Now Playing List is a HUGE missing feature in Songbird.
The good:
- Songbird is useless without this addon. It's a great idea and many other music players use this feature.
The bad:
- This addon is completely unusable due to numerous bugs.
bug1 (major) - Will often freeze songbird because takes 3-5+ minutes processing. For example, when you do select-all then delete it will thrash. Yes, there is an X button at the bottom, but it also happens when doing other random things.
bug2 (major) - Sorting by rating is broken.
bug3 (minor) - All titles in the Now Playing list change to the same title (and all titles in the Now Playing list become highlighted) when you do a Songbird search of your library.
There were also a few I did not mention.
Thank you for the effort, and it is sound in principle and pretty good so far, but it needs to be a lot more robust against errors, corner-cases, and Songbird API changes.
Hi moshy,
So I tested this again yesterday, and I couldn't reproduce it. I was able to add/remove items from the now playing list as normal.
This is very strange, since I tested it on at least 2 separate occasions and it wasn't working. But this is resolved for me for now.
Thanks very much for such a key add-on.
Alex
@moshy.
I'm noticing the same bugs as fishe. (most of the time) The NPL mirrors whatever songs are in the main window, and when a song finishes playing NPL begins at the top of whatever is currently on the list. In addition, the sort options appear to randomly reorder the song names, however double clicking on a song in the list plays whatever song used to be in that position before the sort. Dragging a song to the list after a sort appears to drop a random song name, however clicking that name plays the song I had intended to drop. Songbird doesn't report any errors, just warnings that I don't believe are related to NPL. Vista x64
It´s not working at all for me. I installed it on two different computers, both XP SP3, clean installs of the current versions of Songbird and "Now Playing List" and it´s not working on either computer.
I can´t play a single song I drag into the pane. There is just nothing happening. If I drag more than one song into the pane all songs take the name of the first song. ;-(
Just reporting my experience. I hope this helps:
- Songbird 1.1.1, CentOS 5.2 2.6.18-53.1.13.el5 #1 SMP, Gnome desktop. I have about 6000 MP3s.
- putting in a large number of songs (I tried 911 from one genre) makes Now Playing choke, and sends my CPU into nose dive
- randomize worked once and never saw it shuffle things around again
- Remove (the [X] button) works when things over all seem to be working well. If Now Playing is misbehaving in some other way, the remove does nothing.
- This is far superior to dragging stuff into a Songbird playlist, which is essentially off-screen and then being unable to see my library while managing it. I appreciate your work on this. I am surprise this was not an integral part of Songbird from the start.
jyg
Absolutely great plugin, I would never ever use Songbird without a "now playing" list.
Bit sadly it's unusable for me at the moment :(
I also have the described bug that if you e.g. have one song playing and then add files (from the Explorer) to the list, the new files will turn into the already playing song ... so you have 10 times the same song (it -is- the same, not only wrong name or sth).
But when you then add songs from the media library, those songs will also NOT show, BUT for each song you add from the media library, one song you've added via Explorer before, will be added to the list - that's a rly strange behavior :-/
My system: WinXP (-> explorer = windows explorer), Songbird 1.1.1, Build 1018 (completely fresh install, use it the first time)
I'm having lots of bugs with this plugin.. When I have a playlist made, and I do a search on the Library, the Now Playing list completely changes itself. Also have trouble when I drag files from Windows Explorer, and sometimes when I doubleclick a song on the Library..
Please fix those erros! :~
Another problem: When you use the search bar in the library (or filter pane), then play tracks, the now playing list goes nuts. It plays the right songs, but it displays some tracks and a bunch of repeated ones.
does anybody know if there's an addon that just provides a simple queue/enqueue list, like the ones you probably know from any media-player in the world?
I would echo hachel above. A simple queue would be good. Better still would be if songbird devs built in a 'now playing/queue' but no matter how many times they are told this, they don't want to listen.
With this add-on specifically I find the randomise button button it conflicts with the randomize button in Songbird. Also, I don't find it genuinely random, it seems to repeat a few main shuffle lists, so I'm always hearing the same songs from the favourites queue.
Also, and much more annoying: I use my favourites playlist the most. I drag the contents of it to Songbird. After a restart the Now Playing addon does not retain the previous list but each time adds the whole library into it.
I really wish I could get rid of it to be honest. I don't mean any disrespect to the Add-on Dev. God, I would PAY for a good music manager on Linux. If only Media Monkey ran on Linux...
Are there any plans to make this work in the bottom pane?
hachel, unfortunately I don't think there is. It's the biggest problem with Songbird.
This addon used to do that, but for various reasons it got redesigned and now doesn't do anything useful due to the mass of bugs. I'm sure the developer of Now playing list is busy with life and trying his hardest to get a working release out.
I still can't believe how Songbird developers, the core team, haven't put a feature like this into the product. Surreal.
Thanks for this extension. However, when I browse the library (say by clicking on "All") the Now Playing list shows all the songs of my library - hence I lose the list I created before. Is this the intended functionality, or a bug?
globex...read up, it's a bug...
Is it normal that I cannot interact with the list? I'd like to drag songs in a certain order so that I can queue the song I want to hear next.. this doesn't seem to be working though.
Feature Request: at the bottom of the playlist pane, it'd be nice to have the total time of all songs in the current list.
thanks for the hard work.
So... when you click another artist this list switches to it. so You have to shift click all your artists for the list first time to make it.
also It seems to not want to reset even when I clear it. it just has two artists I would never group togeather in queue. and one track got added 200 times somehoww?
it's a Now playing. not a Queue? and not even that sometimes?
for those who want to move the list to the bottom (though I think the steps are scattered in various places), what needs to be done is:
1) download the xpi file, rename it to *.zip
2) open the zip file and edit the install.rdf file that you will find inside
3) change the line <songbird:suggestedcontentgroups>sidebar</songbird:suggestedcontentgroups>
to
<songbird:suggestedcontentgroups>contentpane</songbird:suggestedcontentgroups>
4) renmae the zip back to *.xpi and install.
This add-on was necessary but has turned useless. It seems to do nothing else than the navigation pane does, totally redundant. No enqueue, no reorder, no saving, and lost as soon as you touch anything in the navigation pane. You better use a playlist instead.
New Version!
Check the release notes. I'm sorry it took so long, I thought I would be able to release 1.0 with a clean code base and then quickly put everything back in a new release, but it took way longer than I anticipated, and you guys were left with a "totally redundant" add-on. Silly me!
Now I personally believe that this version will have less bugs, however experience has taught me that I am always wrong in this, and every time I release a new version there are a million edge cases that trip me up. Fingers crossed for this time though :)
yep new version but still crash songbird with Polish language on board i modified the polish translation in previous version and it worked then I assume that's the problem. the polish translation is not complete and because of that it crash the songbird
It is better as you described it in Release Notes and I am happy about it. :)
However now it doesn't work with Last Track Resume - when I turn Songbird off and back on again it doesn't even remember the last playlist.
But thanks for the awsom work it is weary useful! :)
Yup, this one has issues. If I shrink to the miniplayer it forgets the playlist. It just plays the current song and stops, and going back to the main player shows an empty playlist. If I hit play the list reappears and seems to play normally in the main player, but not in the mini-player. I had Last Track Resume installed, but removed it and the problem remains, so I don't know if it is related to viesturss' problem above.
An update: I don't think this is related to Last Track Resume. I just quit songbird and restarted and got the same problem: no playlist, but it reappears if I hit play and plays in the main player, but not the mini player.
@moshy: First, thank you to spend your time to improve this great add-on!
I tested this new version but sorry, I have to say it's no good. Let's go through your
Release Notes:
- That is a good thing if now playing list doesn't change while I browsing in my library (filtering/searching), but when I start playing songs, it should be copy the list of now playing songs automatically (because this is the now playing list)! ;)
- Yes! Thanks to enable it! :)
- I couldn't test it because the next problem. :P
- Unfortunately the drag and drop feature completely doesn't work (from inside or from outside doesn't matter)! Inside dropping was good before. Queue context menu doesn't work too. Now playing list is always empty and I can't fill it with songs. Sorry but this version completely useless. :(
- A party shuffle would be great in this add-on! :D
My system is: Windows XP MCE SP3, Songbird 1.1.2, Build 1042 (20090331142126)
I crossed my fingers! :D
What a great update!
And your plans (about:nowplaying) are very promising :)
Thanks!
PS: Drag & drop is working perfect for me! (I'm on XP) I really love the feature, that I can even drag a Filter-Entry into now playing to add every thing fitting this entry. Absolutely great!
I didn't have so much problems!
On my OS the drag and drop system works perfect form library and OS! :)
If I start playing new tracks from library it also automatically changes! :)
But another thing I found is that, if I am playing previously made playlist for instants "list". When I add new songs to "list" the now playing list does not update and if I change now playing list and press save it creates me new playlist not updates the previous one. On my opinion there should be a choice like save and save us.
But anyway it's a great new release, thank you for that! :)
My System: Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope), Songbird 1.1.2, Build 1042 (20090331141709).
@moshy: I tested this version again in a new profile (after I read what atreiu wrote) and everything works fine now. Sorry my previous testing wasn't correct! Looks like an other add-on causes my problem in my old profile. Your add-on, works completely well! I have to rebuild an other profile. Thank you for this great add-on!! :)
Thank you for updating this Moshy, it is greatly improved. I've been experiencing the following bug after installing the now playing list, and I verified that it does not occur when the add-on is disabled: when I first open the player, I can double click on an item in a filter such as an artist's name and it will add the contents of the filter to the now playing list. However, if I double click on another one nothing happens. For some reason the ability to add entire filter items seems to be broken after the first time.
Thank you for making a now playing feature! I downloaded it today and love it.
Just one problem though:
Whenever I go into the "Mini Player" it ends up clearing my list. So after I go into the mini player, it will stop playing once my current song is up.
Any chance something can be done?
Keep up the good work!
This makes Songbird a bit laggy for me - there is a 5sec pause before starting playback and MediaFlow judders.
I do have quite a long list (c.15,000) might this be the problem?
Would it be possible to have a user defined number of tracks in the list before and after the currently playing track?
Specs:
Ubuntu 9.04
Songbird 1.1.2

4Gb RAM
I'm experiencing the same issue as Exploriens (two comments above) with the most recent version. I'll start playing a song from my playlist (with Random All and Shuffle enabled), then go to the mini-player. After the current song ends, playback stops, and upon switching back to the full view, the Now Playing list is completely empty. This is a very frustrating bug, but besides that one issue, this is a great plugin.
Please fix soon!
Windows XP SP3
Songbird 1.1.2
Thanks for this great addon. Unfortunately when I play a list from Last FM (Play [artist] radio..) the songs don't show up anymore (they did before)

Hi Moshy, I just found out, that the last NowPlayingList (NPL) Update creates a little problem with MiniPlayer/MediumPlayer/PurePlayer while listening to Last.fm:
1. Start playing a Last.fm Radio Stream.
2. Switch to MiniPlayer or MediumPlayer or PurePlayer
=> The currently playing song is skipped, the next song starts playing
(It seems to happen only once per stream)
This problem exists only with NPL 1.1. In NPL 1.0 the currently playing song continues to play correctly.

This might be related to the mini-player problem people reported- my now playing clears whenever I change feathers.
Wow, great work on 1.1. It's just about perfect now!
@exploriens
I'm getting the same sort of problem - switching to mini clears the list. It finishes the current song and then stops. And I use mini player a lot... :(
I think i found a bug. When i stream from a site and the site has other tracks to listen to (last.fm, skreemr) Songbird automatically starts downloading all the songs that it lists. When i disable now playing, this doesn't happen. Is this intentional or a bug?
@Klint: Try to disable _all_ add-ons, and see if it works. Than re-enable one by one and see, when the problem occurs.
Little bug - even when the now playing window is closed and you open a song and click it at the bottom it goes to the now playing list's.. playlist.
I knew it! Bugs!
@tmacher
Are you saying that the Polish translation in the old version was also incomplete, or is it only this version? If you want you can put the missing translations here (just the strings, no need for the files) and I'll insert them in and put you in the credits. Or you can complete the translation on babelzilla.
Re: miniplayer/feathers problems
Fixed this
Re: Last Track Resume
I'll look into it. The last time this happened my patch didn't work and caused more problems over there. It's a fragile relationship.
Re: radio problems
I haven't experienced this, but then again I never actually tested radio streams. I'm gonna see if the same problems happen with the shoutcast add-on. Thanks for picking this up.
Re: everything else
Thanks for picking these up. Until they're fixed it's a bit silly for me to address each one individually now with "I'll look into this." But I do try and address everything.
@moshy
That is exactly what I wanted to avoid :) (deactivating extensions one by one).
Do you know if there is such an extension, that SAVES a configuration of your extensions (meaning: list of activated / deactivated installed extension) and then also LOADS this configuration (by activating/deactivating installed extension based on the previously save list)?
This is a call for developpers!
Thanks (maybe part of Developer Tools extension?)
@moshy
Thanks! v 1.1 is working really well on my 32 bit linux.
Behaves just like I want it.
I'll test on 64 bit when i get home.
Thanks again!
This page says the add-on got updated 6 hours ago, but Songbird doesn't detect that there are any updates available. Is it because the version number hasn't changed?
And Moshy, my friend and I have both have a problem with Songbird in OSX where it seems to be freezing unless the Now Playing add-on is disabled. It happens from time to time, sometimes right on startup, so I can not pin down what is causing it. If I hide the Now Playing filter pane quickly on startup, it prevents the program from freezing.I disabled every other add-on, and it still happens unless I disable the NPL. I will let you know if I figure out more about what it could be.
I'm getting a freezing issue too, but am having trouble replicating it; When it does happen, is right after I open Songbird and click on a track for the first time. I'll let you know if I hit anything more specific. I'm sure it is Now Playing List -related, though, because it doesn't happen without the plugin.
I am having issue using this on WinXP sp 3. The playlist gets cleared when a song has ended. And it happens to all the song, and all the playlists no matter how long or short the playlist is.
please update to 1.1.1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Y) this should be standard in the release
Hiya, great plugin for old winamp heads :p
A suggestion tho:
I've noticed that double-clicking on an item in the library puts everything in that library window into the now playing list, and then starts the list from that item.
I read above that this is so that you can filter your results for search terms (like an album or artist name) and then get stuck in right away with a quick double click. This functionality makes sense to me in that context, but I'm not sure it works well in the context of your unfiltered list of library items.
The problem is that I quite often start up songbird to listen to a specific song or two, and in my haste to get listening, I double-click on a song, only to have to wait 5 seconds or more for the now playing list to load my 26 thousand tracks into its little window :/
So, is it possible to change this functionality in the different contexts? Say so that double-clicking while in full library mode just brings up the one track that you selected (replacing whatever was there before). If people don't agree that that's a good change then maybe make it so that there's an option to turn it on or off (if not for the individual contexts then for both).
I understand this is a bit of a niggly problem and not a high priority one, but I thought I'd voice my only (minor) gripe about this nice little add-on.
Yours verbosely,
from outer space.
Oops just read the *rest* of the double-click comments on the list, sorry to essentially repeat their requests, there doesn't seem to be a way to delete a post.
Idea! Could you add a way to temporarily disable the add-on? I don't always want to use this extension because it switches the "now playing" from your library to the "now playing" list but currently the only way to do so is to disable it and restart songbird.
the problem was found in previouse and actual version-i see what can I do about this on babelzilla
ok to be honest there is something wrong the translation on babelzilla is completed by someone but it is not implemented in the old version(update the version on babelzilla please!)and the new one-after downloading the translation code and putting it into chrome in yours extension everything works great-keep up good work and don't forget to update your work there where somebody want to help you-and update the bloody translations ;-) I don't want to open the ever version .xpi and make it manual yeah I'm lazy XD
sorry for dubbed post
I'm not sure if others feel this way, but I'm experiencing great annoyance with the Now Playing List not removing files from the actual Songbird library when files drag'n'dropped to the NPL are removed manually from the queue. The thing is, I tend to sample mp3s before I properly tag and add them to my main library, so what ends up happening is that I get all these mp3s added to the database that I don't really want there - I just want to play them, but I don't want them in the actual database.
This could be easily solved if the NPL could draw a distinction between drag'n'drop queuing and actual playlist queuing. If what I'm saying is not clear enough just let me know and I'll try to elaborate!
@Moshy
About the error I'm experiencing, maybe I forgot to tell you an important thing: it is happening on Songbird 1.2 nightlies. I don't know if it is the case in SB 1.1.2 as I don't have anymore.
Nevertheless, at work, I also have a 1.2 nightly and it works well there.
I also have tried to remove all extensions, and even use NowPlaying on a fresh 1.2 profile here at home. No success: I still have plenty of errors like this when starting SB with the Nowplaying panel activated:
Error: this._selection is null
Source File: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Olivier/Application%20Data/Songbird2/Profiles/setgfpzh.1.2/extensions/nowplaying@j.c.m/components/sbNowPlayingQueue.js
Line: 1316
Note that my laptop is quite old here at home, so very slow... while the other one at work is brand new (maybe some asynchronous jobs do not run in the same order on both due to the speed difference...but I'm no developer, so, pardon me if this is silly)
Olivier
This is THE great extension. A must have !
Hi Moshy, there is a incompatibility with PurePlayer - Addon: The Now Playing List is cleared, if i open the PurePlayer. It's cleared in both cases ("Switch to PurePlayer" and "Show PurePlayer allied").
The same thing happens, if I switch to MiniPlayer or to MediumPlayer: the now playing list is cleared.
@moshy: Same as atreiu and the Now Playing List cleared all the time when I restart Songbird.
So it is still loading all the files in the media library view into the NPL on double click/play.
I thought this was a long-established bug. A real show stopper. Makes the addon pointless. Which makes Songbird a bit pointless as this addon is vital.
The queuing is fantastic, but going to the "now playing" list every time I click on song title is a little a annoying, since I actually want to look for more songs from the same artist/album and not look at what Songbird already played.
If there was an option to disable this, it would be great. Although, that probably defeats the point of this add-on lol
@DarkDays
No, I know exactly what you mean (Clicking on the faceplate yes?). I want to change this too.
@fishe
I don't think this is a bug, I think what you want is a feature request (and a valid one too). I have tried to get this going, it didn't work unfortunately. Hopefully things will change with Songbird 1.2. But because a lot of people like it the way it is, getting this done has been pushed back on my todo list.
Re: any error messages
This kind of thing has happened in the past and the case has always been that I'm unable to reproduce the error, no matter how detailed steps are given. Sure I could make the error go away but it won't fix the underlying problem. What I want to do this time is provide a 'debug' version which would work as normal, but puts a option in the menu allowing you to email me a generated report ... or something.
I have a problem. Sangbird use with the Polish language and when you turn on this add-on to me this error pops up
[JavaScript Error: “undefined entity” {file: “chrome://jcm-nowplaying/content/xul/nowplaying.xul” line: 16 column: 1 source: “”&jcm.nowplaying.extensionname;""}]
When I restart the Bird with the English language pack everything works fine …
Afraid despite installing latest updates and despite the problem apparently being fixed I'm still having the issue of the playlist clearing when I switch to miniplayer.
Despite this it works great on main window, keep up the good work.
@regoat: witam rodaka tak problem występuje i już jest zgłoszony do twórcy dodatku obiecał że się tym zajmie należy czekać pozdrawiam
Sorry for non english
I love this add-on. Really helps with songbird's core's lack of an actual editable now playing list.
Though, there are a couple things I'd like changed about it.
-Move to the bottom pane. I'm fairly certain it's not that difficult to do this, just a quick css change in the install.rdf
-A way to have it maintain position when switching between main player and other players.
-an option to move songs that just played to the bottom of the list, that way. There isn't much of a scroll to click/drag queuing, and the songs still stay on the list.
If any of those are possible, I'd greatly appreciate their implementation ^^

Why do you want to move the played songs to the bottom of the list, it works really neat the way it works now with the played songs turning gray and stays on the list.
And having the list at the bottom pane, i hope you mean as an option not permanent for all of us.
Would it be possible to have now playing list to "remember" the songs on the list from when you close down the program and reopen it again?
THANK YOU! This is what songbird was missing! Now it will act like a proper music player :D
Thank you so much.
I've actually sent several reports to apple trying to get this feature on iTunes, obviously to no avail.Tried every single player under the sun.
Your add-on works perfectly for me, I now use Songbird as my only audio player. Sod iTunes. (and I work for Apple how ironic eh)
There's just ONE, one last thing I would love in you add-on that would make my day, really:
When you double click on a song in the Library, it loads up all of your songs into the playlist. I just want one single song in there, the one I clicked on! I like to create my playlists as I go along, and when I accidentally double-click on a song in the library instead of dragging and dropping, it deletes the playlist instead of putting that one song at the end. By the way I'd love to have this even on empty playlists.
So, to make things short:
A preference pane where you can select a "Double-clicking in the Library adds to Now Playing playlist".
Thanks!
Just a little release this time to fix a few naggling issues.
I tried to get it to remember the state of the list between shutdown and startup, but realised it's going to be harder than I though because it has to remember the items in the list AND the order they play in; so that didn't make it in this release.
@distortingjack
What you want is pretty much what everyone wants, you're definitely not alone. Songbird 1.2 should be out soon, so maybe this will be working by that time. We'll see...
In the release notes I'm a little confused by:
- Jump to currently playing track (clicking on the faceplate) will open up the now playing list and show the playing track
Can you elaborate some more? What is the faceplate? Will this work similar to a "manual 'focus track''" then? It'd be nice if this plug-in worked with the focus track plug-in. But we can only use one or the other.
Also I can't open in the bottom pane. Just the right side still. I double checked that I've got the v1.1.1 installed, and doing an addin update search doesn't find anything.
Thanks.
Man, I love your add-on, but I'd REALLY enjoy if it was able to work with the portuguese language (I'm brazilian). Is this possible? Thank you, and keep up the good work.
@MOSHY
Polish users still waiting and new update didn't fixed the language problem songbird still crashing...I don't understand why you don't implement the whole translation(you got it on babelzila) it takes only few minutes and it would fix the bug..still waiting
@tmacher / regoat
My Apologies! I've uploaded the updated version.
@vinicius_aleao
I'm sorry but the Brazillian (and Portugal) portuguese translations are missing a few key strings so I can't upload them yet.
@ Sunraycer
By jump to currently playing track, I mean when you click on the [TrackName * ArtistName * AlbumName] link above the seek bar. The faceplate is the black box.
Regarding it not showing up in the bottom pane, maybe it'll show up this time. If it doesn't, try completely uninstaling it, then reinstalling...
OK. The bottom pane works now.
I also see what you mean about jumping to the currently playing track now. I see that without your plugin it does that in the library instead of in the now playing window.
I had been trying to use the library and the now playing window together. But then gave up and only "Enable" Now Playing when I want to use it (for playing tracks I don't want to add to the library). It seems like now playing should be used instead of the library, instead of with it? Which leads me to the following thought:
Maybe Now Playing should be listed under the main app listings (with Library and Downloads) similar to the Concerts and Releases plugins. You could then put the now playing list in the main window instead of the library, and have things like clicking on the faceplate and focus track work differently when in the library vs when in now playing.
The problem I see then, is getting tracks into the now playing window, since the library wouldn't be there. You'd have to drag from windows explorer or have a display pane that was a file explorer like directory browser plugin.
Just a thought.
Using the Pane Buttons add-on, I have tried hiding the left sidebar in Songbird lately because I realized I hardly ever navigate away from my library, since I don't use radio stations or bookmarks. The one thing I miss having access to is my playlists, and it gave me an idea for the Now Playing List add-on today. Maybe the NPL could have a drop down list that would let you select a saved playlist and load it into the pane. I think it would be really useful for people who just play music in their library and make playlists, but don't need to use anything in the main navigation bar in Songbird.
I think this is a great add-on -- something I consider to be core functionality of Songbird.
That said, I've had to disable this add-on because it made my Songbird freeze 60-70% of the time I clicked the "play" button. Looking around, I find I'm not the only person this is happening to.
Windows XP/32-bit
Songbird 1.1.2
now it is perfect addon for songbird for polish users too big thx moshy and keep up good work
Nice addon, but since I installed it 'Resume Last Track' has stopped working
I LOVE IT!
The addition of a hotkey would render it perfect, since my trackpad is a bit unreliable, both right-clicking and dragging-and-dropping doesn't quite work. But damn, finding this made my day!
Dragging from the Now Playing list to a playlist on the left does not work. You have to write click it and select the playlist that way. Possible to fix?
Sorry if this has come up already, but is it impossible for this to work with focus track/details pane?
I should say, though, this is a really useful add-on. Great work. The only shortcoming for me is the incompatibility with focus track.
@moshy: I have some problems:
1st - The new 'jump to currently playing track' behavior is very annoying! If I want to jump quickly to current playing track to edit it, browsing around it or just do something, currently used add-on closes in the sidebar and Now Playing List opens even if I wanted to use that add-on what closed. All the time I have to reopen previous add-on and use scroll bar to go to currently playing track. Could you create an option panel to on/off this feature? Please.
2nd - Memory usage of this add-on is too big. I usually listen songs from the library and in this case the whole track list appears in the sidebar. When I scroll in the list, this add-on burns all free memories of my laptop very quickly. Just some seconds and more than 700Mb memory is gone!!!! Currently playing track stops, everything dyes, the whole system freezes!!! I have to stop scrolling and wait until the system turns to live! You have to do something with this!
3rd - The icon-playing image is gone from the content pane. It appears only in this add-on. This feedback is very useful on the content pane too, please take it back.
4th - 'Edit Metadata' context menu option doesn't work in this add-on.
5th - And yes...Focus Track stopped working.
One thing that doesnt work is ,when u have a lot of songs in ur NOW Playing list, u shuffle them by clicking shuffle on, and then you RIGHT CLICK a Song to ADD TO ANY PLAYLIST and it wouldnt put the CORRECT Song into the Playlist u wanted.
Maybe a way to help with the memory burn would be to change how songs are added to the Now Playing list. As it is when you click on a song it adds the entire viewable library, so simply playing the first track of an album adds the entire album to Now Playing. Instead of this, why not just have double-clicks add only the one song? We can always drag and drop albums if we want to have entire albums (or more than one song) in the playlist. If Hiromacu is speaking about shuffle, then I'm not sure, because it seems like Songbird basically generates a playlist out of the entire library.
Hey, great add-on. Very ambitious especially with all the users complaints. Here I am added to the queue. : P
My biggest complaint (the one that is going to make me stop using it for now) is that I can't drag and drop from now playing list to other playlists. I like to shuffle my whole library and use the now playing list to display previous/future songs. When I hear a song in my library that I think should be added by right clicking or dragging to another playlist it lets me try. However, when I look into the playlist no songs were added.
Windows XP, Version: Songbird 1.2.0, Build 1146 (20090616030043)
Thanks for your great add-on and keep up the good work, sir!
