Organize library files in Songbird
Is your music library scattered all over your hard drive? Do you
wish that all your “Alvin and the Chipmunks” tracks
were organized into one directory? Well, now they can be with the
music library file organizer Songbird extension.
Simply install this extension using the Tools/Add ons menu in
Songbird. A new tools menu item will be installed, providing the
capability to organize your music library.

Oops. Didn't mean to add a comment. How can I delete this?
you can't. plus... the comment filter is pretty messed up. I'm gonna clean up the comments prior to official launch.
is that so! in that case let me add a little spammy here and there.
i shouldn't be able to vote for myself!
love the idea of this extension, but it doesn't seem to work for me. it installs fine, i get the extra "tools" option and everything. it asks me where i want the files to be placed. then when i click ok to begin the process it makes folders for the first artist and album title (in my case A.F.I.A.F.I.) and then does not copy any files nor continue making folders for any other files. tried it with version 0.2 and 0.2.5. i assume this could be because of the upgrade from 0.1 but everything i have read says it should work with 0.2 and 0.2.* thanks! ps - i read in the forums about your attempt to keep this updating, to ensure that all files were in the right place automatically. i like that idea. keep working!
I have the same problems like blocke. - Installation: OK - "Tools" menu item integration: OK - Possibility to choose a target folder: OK - Import of files to folder: FAILED One folder plus a subfolder is created in the target folder. No files are copied. I also LOVE the idea of organizing all files automatically. Please keep on develop this plugin! Greetinx Woko
Erik didn't mention, but he just uploaded a new version, so hopefully the problems in the comments have now been fixed, yes?
Erik, I just installed and used the Library Organizer add-on. When it organizes my files, if I have a directory which holds a compilation album consisting of various artists, it creates a separate directory for each artist. Personally, I think the album title should take precedence. Is there an option to do this? I am looking for a default artist name, e.g. "various", underneath which would be the names of compilation albums and within each compilation album would be the track title and artist. Thanks in advance. Ingemar
I had a similar problem to the above, but kind of different. I set the target directory to the same directory all my music is in, because I have all my music on it's own partition. When I ran it, it ended up consuming the remaining space I had on it without cleaning up my library much at all. Is their a way to get that space back. Other relevant information would be that I'm on windows xp and the partition is FAT32.
I don't know if this is a bug of something that wasn't considered when making this addon, but in windows if there are certain characters in the album name of a song, it stops it from being moved to the new directory. Things like ellipses, or question marks, and spaces.
It would be great if this add-on would have dynamic naming so you could say all music files go to "C:music
I agree with ingemar. I've dived into Songbird to avoid using horrible iTunes any more, but I now have triple the number of artists in my collection. I can live without pretty much all of iTunes' other features, but after using it for so long (more fool me) I need to group compilations to make it useable. So, Songbird developers of the world: please include this feature in your wonderful software!
Why not take advantage of short cuts and have the files under multiple hierachies at once. the one file could have short cuts under a number of paths depending how you wanted to search your collection. A shortcut to the one file could exist under album but also under artist and genere
uh ... where's the version that works with v0.3.x ?? Thank you!
Is a version of this available for Songbird 4.0?
Looking forward to a version that’s compatible with songbird 0.4! thanks.
will this EVER be updates/implemented??
likely a great amount of people would be eternally grateful were this extension ever to be updated, i know i sure would be.
we ALL would!
but its been out of date since 0.4….
havent heared anythign about it since…
plz plz update!!! _
Still no word on updating this extension?
songbird 1.0 is great... but needs this feature ASAP for any real iTunes user to make the switch... it's the only thing missing... how in the world could they/would they release 1.0 without this being updated?
version 1.0 is out and we are still missing this plugin...
dang i cant change to songbird untill this is updated.
If after every metadata edition i have to browse to the folder and edit the file again manualy and/or move it to a new folder/rename the folder ill become crazy...
update plz!
This is a must-have. Hopefully it gets updated
This must be fixed ASAP. And in future versions, this is a must to integrate.
I agree this extention is essential and should be updated asap!!
Any plans to port this to Songbird 1.0 ?
I should read everyone else's comments before writing this ^
Anyway, I definitely agree that this feature is absolutely essential to managing a music library.
Would be too cool to have this feature in Songbird!
Also there is really some request: http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/automatically_organizing_music_library
I can't help but agree with others. This is the #1 reason for me not switching from iTunes to Songbird.
Dragging and dropping files straight into iTunes and having it copy into Artist->Album folders is a MUST have for me.
A feature like "genius" would be nice too, but understand that you need a MASSIVE userbase to have it work well.
