A very nice Add on.

Shows an alert slider when the song changes. Alert can included information about the currently playing song including: Title, Artist, and Album.
The text, image, and colors on the alert can be customized.
0.6.4
-Max. version now 1.10.*
-Bug Fix: Quotes in strings
-Added sv-SE translation
A very nice Add on.
I was listening to my music (great application), a song was starting that I didn't like so I wanted to change this to the next one (shuffle). I think it would be a good to add the functionality of either skipping to next trap or to bring to the application into focus when clicking on the alert slider. Your thoughts
great add-on. and too cute.
its works for me on linux just hit other version, and install away
very nice. this brings the behind-the-scenes music player experience to songbird.
Uhm...I found it a little hard to read titles, as there's no background and the font is not that 'bright', so it depends on the wallpaper you've set...
Needs a background behind the text, can't read anything.
Song Notifier 0.1.2, 0.4 Songbird:
The contrast of text/background is very bad. I cant read anything. Black text would be okay.
there are white spots at the round edges. I think they should be transparent.
I uploaded a screenshot, perhaps its doesnt work as intended:
http://img512.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenbv6.jpg
Anyway, thanks for the add-on! It not very useful for me, now, but its time will come :-)
I like the random birdy-pics!!!
its giving me a weird error…every couple of songs a notification will pop-up in the top left corner and just stay there…even if the song changes, and the only way i found to get rid of it is to change skins or restart the program…im using vista and songbird 0.4
I can confirm the error. It’s annoying, because it stays on top of all. im using xp and songbird 0.4
Works flawless on SB 0.5, Mac OS X, via Growl Notifier. Bang up job! Nice addition to the development of SB!
On SB v. 0.5, and the latest version of the plugin it pulls up 3 separate instances via growl. Not sure why, here are the errors

Oh, I should note after reading some of the errors that I have Album Art manager installed, yet, it was doing it before I installed that add-on.
This is a great extension, what I would like to see in newer versions however, are:
* Ability to change the font
* Change positioning and sizing (including padding) of elements in the notifiication
* Colors that don't necessarily depend on the feather
* Adding more lines to the display (example, I want one line for title, one for artist, and one for album. Different colors per line would be nice. Maybe a big text area that reads newlines?
* Auto sizing based on content
I'm giving this a 3/5 right now, as it's working and working great, but I'd love to see more customization. Good luck!
Also, I forgot to note: Maybe customizable background images too?
Help! How can I tame this thing or simply get rid of it? It climbs to the upper left corner and never disappears: So I cannot get to the Songbird controls anymore. It even shows in other applications such as open office writer hiding the icons I need to work things.
Heyhey, nice addon! Maybe the best in terms of font size.. The text of other song notifying addons are soooo tiny. Especially when it comes to displaying chinese fonts.. The only problem I've had so far is the album art not displaying..
Any ideas ? I can't seem to uncheck the 'random' or any other icons boxes.
Experiencing the same problem some are reporting here (the notifier appearing also on the top left corner, on top of everything, unable to move it etc.). Tried an older version, and although the problem disappeared, now two notifications appear on the lower right corner, one on top of the other. Weird.Overall, I like it, but I'll wait for a new version before trying it again to see if the problem I'm experiencing disappears.(BTW I'm on WinXP pro SP2, using the latest Songbird.)
Great addon, but one thing i noticed: there doesn't seem to be a size limit on the album art. If I happen to have a hi-res art for one, it pops up huge, then small for the next song, ect. The same goes for CD titles and such. It would be nice to have a preset limit for the height and width, rather than having it extend and contract constantly.
Also, it would be nice to have a few more options than "Title", "Artist", "Album", and "Genre". Good addon, though.
Great Addon, some nice features would be:
check for album art in the metadata before going online to find it, and if it exists, use the one embedded in the tag.
put a maximum size for the album art to display, if the art is larger than the max size (maybe a changeable setting for the user), resize it to be the max size, if it's smaller, leave it as is
Some sort of border around the notification window, or using a colored background (close to the color of the built in windows balloon tips)....sometimes it blends in with other opened applications, and IMHO it would look better with a border or if it stood out more.
Thanks for the work on this so far :)
Very nice job!
I'm using Songbird/0.7.0 (20081007140914) on OpenSolaris 2008.11RC2 system. It would be great, if cyrillic names displayed correctly. I have the whole music collection tagged with UTF8, however weird symbols (boxed_hex_nums, you know :-)) displayed instead.
4 of 5 ;-)
Works well (and doesn’t require Snarl). Hoping for more customization in future releases – especially to set how long the window stays visible. Nice work!
My OS is Ubuntu 8.10, and the character encoding of the ID3 tags of my music is UTF-8. This addon can't show the right chinese characters.
I love it, but perhaps a constraint could be put on the size of the album art displayed? Some of my high-res album covers take thirty seconds to scroll up and down the screen... perhaps limit them to displaying at 250x250 or something?
It wont let me click the install button to get this addon, can someone help me out?
Never mind I figured it out how to get it to finally install
Hello Mr. Developper :p !!
I would just like to beware you because we can't install you're add-on from the songbird 1.0 navigator even if you have done the update. I think the reason is that you haven't mentionned in the add ons details that he is compatible with the new version (even if he is).
So just dot it so everbody will can install this one without going to firefox and install manually ;-).
Thank you for your add on and sorry for my poor english (i'm french)
Thanks for the update! It would be nice, if you could add some options for the fade-in animation. Like: How fast should the pop-up be faded in. And most important: for how long the message should be displayed!
If you then allow us to set transparency, it just would be perfect :-) Anyway, 5 stars by me
I've tried all three notification add-ons and this is hands down the best. Great work!
Just one minor request: when I check the "show album art"checkbox as well as the "random" bubble, I'd like to be able to see both the bird AND the album cover in the notifier window. I think the album cover is a highly useful visual aid, but I really, really miss that lil' bird.
Awesome!!
Just awesome!!
This is the best notification add-on ever!!!!!!
This is a great addon, I really love it. I do have one suggestion though: make an enable/disable option or button, because when I'm playing movies or games it lags like crazy when the notifier is sliding in and out. Thanks for the great addon!
A wonderful add-on!!!
I have one suggestion : change the delay for how long the message is displayed.
Thanks a lot for this add-on
great addon. i love the little bird icons that pop up with the song.
a suggestion with the bird:
i noticed that there are many bird icons, each having a different mood etc. i think it would be great if the addon could read the tone and frequency of songs and choose a specific bird icon to pop up depending on what the song sounds like. if its a mellow song then the one with headphones looking relaxed etc.
anyhow i love it.
Works excellent.
My only issue is that it brings Songbird into focus everytime I change the song from my keyboards media keys.
I am using Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid, Gnome Desktop, and this addon: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1412
to control media keys.
I can't tell if it's a clash between plugins since this is the only media key plugin I found that works.
I think it would be a great feature if a sound/beep could notify when the currently playing song has not yet been rated. I love your program and think this would be a great addition. Thanks!
I don't know if it's possible but could you have it check the current feather for an image to use and maybe settings for coords of text items to. That way designers could make notify windows that correspond to their theme. If it doesn't find the info in the feather then it would use the standard methods.
I suggested this for Notify Me already even though it didn't work for me. Let's see who figures it out first. ;)
Your addon works great btw, thank you!.
To add to my suggestion, I guess you would need to make it optional to use the feather supplied notify or the standard.
Nice!!!! I love it.
when you have the rating showing on it
it comes up with some strange characters shouldn't it come up with stars?
Very good!!! Thanks a lot!
It's working for me on Linux Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex ;) Thanks !
I have two ideas :
1) Resize the cover when they are display, because if the cover is so large, the effect is very bad
2) More songbird image!!! because 15 images it's not sufficiently for do a good random images ;)
Luck!
Make an update for the 1.1.1 please!!!
A simple install.rdf hack made it work again in 1.1.1 for me on Ubuntu 8.10...
How do you do that joux???
Thank you ;)
You have to edit the file
[songbird app data folder]/[default profile]/extensions/songnotifier.conlan@addons.songbirdnest.com/install.rdf
with a text editor. It is an XML-File. You want to change <em:maxversion>1.0.*</em:maxversion> to 1.1.* Save it, restart.
Be careful with this hack, it does not always work, and it actually makes sense not to use an addon with a new Songbird, before the add-on author hasn't checked it and increased the version number..
Helpful: How to locate your profile
Here is a modification, works well in Songbird 1.1!
http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=509465c531a519155a3d773badf21430e04e75f6e8ebb871
The author need to create a new version, but while is a good option install this.
Sorry for mi english xD
Il n'y a pas assez de personnages ^^
I’ve been missing this! Thanks for the update, and esp for adding the setting for how long the notifier is displayed. Great extension.
Yes!
Merci pour l'update! C'est génial!!!!
Thank you very much for this update!!! :)
Very nice addon:
1. Customizable
2. Works good
3. UI is good.
4. No ugliness!
Very very good! Mayble some transparency option in the future? Regarding the way it shows and hides?
Could you maybe add some rating thing with stars?
Just some more lines where we can add some info!
Does what it advertises! 10/10 ... Great work.
It would be good if we could change the place were the box appear...
Thanks ;)
For some reason it won't display the minute's ten's place when it's a zero... a song that's four minutes and seven seconds displays as 4:7 it removes the zero. can you fix this?
could we get an option so that we can enable/disable the notification without having to disable the whole addon?
Hi conlan.. I'm wondering if you can adapt this extension to work with the new Ubuntu 9.10 Notification System... The only which the extension have to do is read artist info and album picture. The other is just send bash code. There is some help lines...
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotificationDevelopmentGuidelines
Thanks!!
Hey, I saw that someone else recommended this a while back, but to have the ability to skip tracks when the notification pops up would be great!
It's available in Banshee now and is a feature that is very nice.
As a means of implementaiton, it would be good enough to just be able to double click on the notification to have it skip or something. I took a look at the extension code that you had but I don't know enough about dev for Songbird/Mozilla (first time looking at any extension haha) to do it on my own.
Right now, your Extension is Great. This would make it Awesome!
Hello!
Please! adapt this add-on to Ubuntu 9.10!
Thanks
Hey!
The same than sironitomas :: "I'm wondering if you can adapt this extension to work with the new Ubuntu 9.10 Notification System... The only which the extension have to do is read artist info and album picture. The other is just send bash code. There is some help lines...
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotificationDevelopmentGuidelines
Thanks!!"
I’m also getting the bug with the missing zero when the seconds for the track length are less than 10.
One suggestion: a close button in the upper right corner of the notification window in case you'd want to clear the window before the set time has expired. Great extension though. I always keep it enabled.
Works on Windows 7, thanks!
For linux (or more specifically ubuntu) can you add support for the new Notify OSD?
Use Notify-send Title Message to test it out.
Otherwise, looking good!
Can the source be downloaded somewhere to add functionality for Notify-OSD?
Sorry, I was not aware that mozilla extensions are not being compiled.
I've made a quick version that supports the new Notify OSD:
http://inoue.nl/song_notifier-0.5.1.xpi
It doesn't do album-icons yet, ignores windows, does not give you an error when libnotify-bin is not installed, so it still needs some polish. If you have any questions or tips you can contact me at niels.egberts@gmail.com
There IS a big problem with this.. libnotify-bin isn't installed by default in Ubuntu 9.04, but lib notify yes. There is a way to handle notificacions without installing any extra packages: trough python.
Anyway, the "" surrounding the names should be deleted. I think...
Looks surprisingly good on linux!
Nice add-on. Works pretty well although does not slide up that smoothly for me on Ubuntu 9.04.
@Niels, just tried your version - looks great with the system OSD. I even get album artwork coming through! Thanks!
Why does this not use Growl?
ohai there, i was hoping you (mr. developer) could improve the addons with some ideas i think could be very helpful.
> first of all id really like the time the notification takes to appear and disappear would be customizable, and maybe even a different animation (like fade-in or something)
> and another not really major thing is when you change songs fastly you have to wait for the animation to load again and again, so maybe if the animations would connect somehow it would be more comfortable.
and of course, other than what i said, the addon is very useful and nice, thank you.
and another idea. fore multimedia keyboard support- make an option that the notification will appear when you increase the volume. and, if possible, make the notification be seen on full-screen programs (for example: when i play i like to hear music but to see what im listening to i have to switch window and its annoying)
gee. i hope youll consider my requests. :)
Ubuntu 9.04 Works
Niel's version - http://inoue.nl/song_notifier-0.5.1.xpi - definitely works in Ubuntu 9.04, but as dael99 said, you must install libnotify-bin.
If you're looking at this through either Songbird's browser or Firefox, I think you can simply click on this link - apt:libnotify-bin - and it will launch the package manager and install what's needed. Otherwise you can hit Alt-F2 and type in "sudo apt-get install libnotify-bin" (without quotes).
Sorry, I don't think this site supports the apt:libnotify-bin link. I have copied the source from other sites where it does work, but still no joy in Songbird or Firefox. Hmmm...
To make this work with Songbird 1.2, simply find the directory where the extension is installed, open the install.rdf file and change the <em:maxversion> tag to say <em:maxversion>1.2.*</em:maxversion>
Depending on your platform, the location will be something like the following;
Windows XP
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\Songbird2\Profiles\<alphanumeric-code>.default\extensions\songnotifier.conlan@addons.songbirdnest.com\install.rdf
Vista
C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Songbird2\Profiles\<alphanumeric-code>.default\extensions\songnotifier.conlan@addons.songbirdnest.com\install.rdf
Linux
/home/<Username>/.songbird2/<alphanumeric-code>.default/extensions/songnotifier.conlan@addons.songbirdnest.com/install.rdf
Hi, thanks for this add-on in my songbird player. Would you mind to add another preference, to allow user to put notifier location. For example I am using Jaunty Ubuntu, usually the notifier will go to top right corner of my panel, instead of the bottom right default in this add-on. It would be nice if you can add choice for users.
Thanks. Good work...
Could you please add the improvements that Niels added for Ubuntu (http://inoue.nl/song_notifier-0.5.1.xpi) to the official build? If that version causes problems on other non-Ubuntu platforms, perhaps you could have a preference option to allow this code. Several Ubuntu users have verified that this code works well.
Thanks. Rygle.
By the way, I don't mean to sound ungrateful. Your work on this plugin is much appreciated.
Many thanks for all the interest on the hack I made on this plugin!
I want to start with better integration on this plugin next week. Either I can upload it as a new plugin (are the plugins GPL'ed?) or the current developper can upload my updated version, but I don't know how to get in touch with him.
Looked past the authors email adres, I'll mail him this week and start hacking the next :)
could you add themes support? please
;)
Hey, Ive noticed a bug. I enabled "show album art if available". When starting a song without album art it sometimes shows me this (ugly) pic:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/5552/123344345433.jpg
I dont know where it comes from...
Could someone help me please?
I really like this add-on, however the only thing that really sucks is it keeps showing up when streaming from Shoutcast. It shows up about every 5 seconds!! There needs be a way to temporarily turn it off or fix this as enable/disable isn't good since you have to re-start Songbird for it to take effect.
Nice work otherwise.
I really want to like this add on but it's ugly as sin. It needs to support opacity changes and using image files as custom backgrounds. Yes I do need things to look pretty when I use them!
For everyone thats is interested, I have put the first version of my Ubuntu-notifier online:
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addons/1672
@conlan: This new theme support is great! :) Could you implement a skinable [Current Feather] theme as well? Same like in LyricMaster or in Pure Player. Feather developers (like me) could use it. :P
I'm having some goofy bug that's causing absolutely nothing to show. I'm not sure if it's because my taskbar is at the top of my screen or if it's because I'm on Songbird 1.4. It used to work, but now it fails to show anything when a song changes.
Great add-on, but there are 2 things I miss in this addon:
1. Can you make it if you click on the allert, the allert dissapears.
2. This won't have a high priority, but can you make the allert like aero (more transparize)
Sorry for my very bad english.
I agree with the comment above some Aero goodness would be awesome.
- Rounded corners
- Transparency (configurable)
- Ability to choose where it appears
@conlan and those, who want to choose where it appears.
Here is a little hack that moves window to left:
chrome\songnotifier.jarcontent\alert.js file using any text editor:onLoad() function likevar x = screen.availLeft;x -= 10;Similarly for moving to top - change y to something like
var y = screen.availTop;
Update: moving to top hint doesn't work, should be
var y = totalHeight - currentHeight;
But in this case animation will work incorrectly, use this fix:
in the same file reset window.screenY in animate(step) function like:
window.screenY = 0;
Very nice addon, thanks.
Just one glitch: when a tag has no value, "null" is written in the notification, instead of nothing.
awesum ^_^
Hey, I'm really liking this add-on, but whenever the song changes it maximizes Songbird O.o Does anyone know how to fix this? It's driving me nuts.
Thanks very much; it's working on macbook air/10.5.8.
Little slow but I think it's me; I have 31158 songs in my library:))
When the song titles are very short in length, the notification width gets resized to fit that title. For some songs the alert is too small to notice and sits in the right bottom corner noticeably.
The option to set max width for alert so that it doesnt get resized, would be awesome addition to the plugin.
Great job! I really like this!
Like it!
Just: when a tag has no value, "null" is written in the notification, instead of nothing.
Request: Would it be possible to rate the song within the notifier?
please update!
I fixed and uploaded a version for songbird 1.7.3. I also tried to contact the developer, so that he can update the official version.
Great Job brudaswen....
I just try it and it perfectly works, thanks !!!!
Thanks brudaswen, works like a charm.
Only problem I had was every time I clicked on it, firefox tried installing it into firefox, and not songbird.
Fixed that by downloading it in a different browser.
I know this may be too much to ask, but I remember there was one other add-on which allowed player hotkeys/gestures to be accessed right from the notifying window, simple things like next-previous-pause-play. I really don't need such, since I use the media buttons of my keyboard, but would love to be able to "recall" or restore Songbird's main window by clicking on the notifying window. Hope such is possible in a future version!
I love it, pretty great add-on if you ask me, Good work!
Hey guys, to get this to work all you have to do is to change the maximum version allowed, which can be done by:
1) Open Firefox
2) Download Addon
3) eventually rename to .zip
4) Edit install.rdf
a) change line 19 to: <em:maxversion>1.9.*</em:maxversion>
5) Rename: back to .xpi
6) Open Songbird
7) File -> Open File... -> the .xpi
Thanks to DanyBoss and w0lf42 for the info xD
BUG -- If a quote is in the title (whether actual title or if enter a quote to display in the configuration field) notifier does not display. This could also be true for artist field. Using Version: Songbird 1.9.3, Build 1959 (20110127030554)
mig
Awesome! PlayNotify is crappy and boring. Feh on it!
