Allows you to use USB mass-storage media devices in Songbird

Description

1.0.4:
– updated for 0.4 release
Allows you to use any device that supports USB Mass Storage as a portable device that you can manage media on. From a USB stick to an Archos to a Creative MuVo. As long as it can be configured to act like a UMS device, this add-on will be able to help you manage your media on it.
Windows only for now. Should work on Windows 2000, XP, XP x64 and Vista (minimal testing on Vista).
Now works with Songbird 0.2.5 RC1!

Awesome! Still buggy, but works reliably on first-run. You can add and remove tracks, but you can't copy tracks from the device just yet. Still, if you want just basic USB support, this is it.

The new version uploaded should be a lot more reliable with first run device detection. It also copies tracks to your library. Yay!

I tried using this add-on with my Creative Zen Vision:M, but can not figure out how to get it to work. When I went to the Options/USB it says that no mass storage device is connected. Any suggestions?

    Aus staff Aus

I think you will have to switch your device from MTP mode to UMS or Hard Disk mode for my UMS Add-on to work with it. If that option is available it should be under the Options/Preferences on the device itself.

It won't recognize my Sansa e260. It's set on MSC (mass storage as opposed to MTP). I've never had trouble using my Sansa as mass storage before, so I can't imagine what's up here. Songbird says "No USB mass storage devices are connected." Hmm....

Weird. I've only tested using the Sansa e270. It's very close to what you have though, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. I'll try and get the folks at Sandisk to send me an e260 :)

I installed the USB mass storage extension, then connected a Samsung YP-Z5 2gb mp3 portable player by USB & Songbird wouldnt recognize the device. I clicked the extension's option & a funky "title bar only" window popped up without any options to choose from. I'll check back on fixes later.

I'm having the same problem with the e260. Sometimes it recognizes it and sometimes not. When it does, it will not update the tracks I have on it and if I try to move tracks to it they sit in the transfer queue but never actually download.

You can copy stuff onto your device by selecting it in the Library and drag/dropping it onto the entry in the service pane (left pane) for your device.

Hi, I have just downloaded the usb-mass storage extension and connected my creative labs zen touch. Nothing happened though, the player didn'nt get recognised by songbird. A shame, I have just downloaded songbird recently and like the look of it. I find its strength lies in the strong integration of web resources. iTunes still has one big advantage and that is the print out of tracklists in different layouts. MediaMonkey is strong due to its integration of a complete file tree including "MyDocuments" etc. Its useful. Usb mass storage works with their plugin straight away. It would be great if songbird could develope all those features and be the best mediaplayer around. Does a a wish list exist? I would be pleased for any advise on how to get the connection (between my mp3 player and songbird) going. Thanks

Tried this with an Nokia N95 in mass storage mode.
I set the copy music files directory to be G:SoundsDigital where I already had mp3s.
It picked up files from G:Private20001f63englishenglish_female which is sat nav voices but not the music.
I then dragged some mp3s from the library to the device and it placed the files in G: :(

Your version of songbird is too new. =P This add-on was designed for an older version of Songbird, and .xpi installers have their compatible software version numbers built in, which means it will refuse to install on a version it doesn't recognise, even if it could possibly work correctly. It might be as simple as adding 0.3.* to the .xpi, or it might be as complex as a compelt code change.

stayed with version 0.2.5 for some time to use this add-on but it didn’t really work, as I couldn’t manage the usb-device’s content. files arrived there, but sort of “in the blue”. I was very happy to see the new version of the add-on now and tried it with songbird 0.3: the usb is not being recognized and when I remove it while the program is running, it causes a crash bang boom!.. why is that?

  45. about 1 year ago
    RackHaM RackHaM

Hi and first I really want to thank you for your work,

Here are a few problems I have with the add-on:

–with songbird 0.3.1 (Windows XP SP2), I can’t get my mp3 stick detected : when I plug it while songbird is running, it crashes; and when I plug it before running songbird, it won’t be detected.

With songbird 0.4rc2 my mp3 stick was successfully detected (great !).

–But I think there is a problem with the “Music” and the “Video” directories. My mp3 stick letter is ‘G’, so the add-on automatically set the values ‘g:’ for those ‘Music’ and ‘Video’ directories. But I had to change those values to ‘G:’ to be able to copy files from my library on my mp3 stick. With the default value ‘g:’, the songs I added from my main library were added to the MP3 library, but the files were not transfered on my device. And yes, I checked “Songbird shouldmanage this device”.

-The files copied on the mp3 stick have bad encoded names... for example, the initial file was 'Beyoncé - Irreplaceable.mp3' and once transfered on my device it was 'beyonc%c3%a9%20-%20irreplaceable.mp3'

I hope this will help to make the add-on better.

    Thanks again

    Hello Everyone!

I’m using the latest build on a new iMAC with OSX version 10.4.11.

I have a SANSA E-280 MP3 player and can’t find the method to sync it with Songbird. I did find a mass storage add-on but it stated that it does not support the OS in use.

Can my player, OS and Songbird work together? if so. how?

I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra and i have been looking for a decent WIndows Media Player replacement for a long time. Songbird appears to be the best potential replacement I have found. Unfortunately, my four-and-a-half-year-old device only supports MTP for transfers (which is bizarre as the playsforsure spec requires MSC support).
ANYWAY would implementation of MTP in songbird be possible?

I’m running into the same problem as RackHam. I’ve got a Sansa e270 set to MSC mode, and when I drop files on, they seem to be fine. However, once i unplug, all the files i have added are in the artist menu “unknown” with the file naming convention like RackHaM described. None of them will play

Once I plug back into songbird, the Sansa library shows that the files are there (with the correct ID3 Tags), but the ones I’ve added through Songbird are unplayable. Songs not added through Songbird (stuff i tossed on from another computer running amarok) play just fine.

Aus, since you have a Sansa e270, do you have any words of wisdom for me?

Surely this couldn't take a Songbird developer much more than a week to get it working nicely again. Guys, you can 'hack' any plugin to work on any version of Songbird - this method works for Firefox too:

    1. Download .XPI file to desktop
    2. Open with WinZip/WinRar/7-Zip or similar, or change extension to .ZIP and open
    3. Edit install.rdf in a text editor (Notepad, Notepad++), near the top there is the line:
    <em:maxversion>[xx.xx]</em:maxversion>
    4. Set the max version to match your version (or higher).
    5. Save install.rdf back into the .XPI archive file
    6. Install as usual and how the plugin itself works

Unfortunately, on Songbird 1.1.2, this plugin does everything correctly up until you hit the 'Sync' button. Nothing happens :(

Please fix this Songbird peeps! It's a very useful plugin!

Matskl: I'm thinking about programming a plugin for mac that will do this. Unfortunately I have no plugin experience, though I have programming experience. I have done some research on this I think it can be done using the java file I/O class to do the physical moving of the files specified in some playlist. I don't think that it will be a problem to make it work on windows as well as linux and osx as the files are given by songbird that already works on all the platforms.

I have made a thread on the dev forum:

My vote is in... this needs to be made compatible with 1.2 (then maybe I can truly sync my Archos 5 which doesn't seem to like MTP)... plus I could sync my daughter's mp3 player...

    @all peeps here:
I don't know if you noticed it, but the FolderSync is able to sync USB-Mass-Storage Devices.
It should be compatible to windows, mac and linux.
If you need help with that, look at the Manual or ask (for example via comment).
