Rate Your Library brudaswen

Helps you to rate all songs in your library by notifying you when you listen to an unrated track.

Rate Your Library

Description

This extension helps you to easily rate your whole songbird library.

Whenever you listen to an unrated song you are ask to rate this title. By default the notification pops up after exactly 50 percent of the song, such that you have listened long enough to decide how much you like this song.

You can also define a global hot-key to open the notification manually (Ctrl+Shift+N by default). (New)

Release Notes

Songbird 1.9 compatibility.

Hi brudaswen,

really nice and useful idea!
Is it possible to rate the song within the notification popup? (And then autoclose)
Would be super-duper-mega!

That is actually the purpose of this extension. The rating bar should be located at the bottom of the albumart image.
I added an additional screenshot that shows the rating bar. I hope that this also works for you. Otherwise just contact me again.

upps. didn't see that in the frist screenshot. my fault.
thx for very quick answer. works very nice!!!

What I noticed:
when the notification is already there and you press pause and play or you jump within the song, then on every change the popup comes again. couldn't it be permanent until song changes?

If you didn't rate a song and the next is also unrated, the notification of first song remains there. After dismissing or rating the first song, the notification for the second song doesn't appear in any circumstance.

@brudaswen: Great idea! Works well!

Suggestions:
- this add-on should shows up all the time, if a checkbox is unchecked (for example: Notifying only when a track is unrated.)
- ability to hide the "Rate Your Music - Unrated Song" text.

agree totally with Hiromacu:
1) then your addon doesn't interfere with (and imho thereby makes absolete) all other notification addons.

great extension idea :)
would it be possible to implement synchronizing these ratings to MusicBrainz? (if the file contains the MusicBrainz ids in tags)

Marko:
1. The reopening of the notification for the same song is fixed now. Thanks for the hint.
2. But I can't reproduce your second bug. The notification should open when you reach the "middle" of the next track.

Hiromacu:
1. I removed the "Rate Your Music" headline, since it really did not look that nice! Thanks for that hint.
2. Always showing the notification is possible, but not actually the purpose of this extension. That is actually what the SongNotifier extension is supposed to do. Since I really like that extension and I used that extension to get much information about how to build my extension, I don't currently want to add that functionality without talking to the developer of SongNotifier. But I get the point, that this extension could also include the functionality of SongNotifier. So stay tuned for further updates!

PhilipsRemote:
I think that should better be handled by another extension that listens to ANY rating changes and not only to the changes arriving in this extension. A problem may be, that the real mp3-MusicBrainz-tag is not accessible within songbird - but I am not sure about that. I really like the idea behind MusicBrainz, so maybe I will have a look at it. But currently I don't have much time, so don't expect to much.

Great extension!

Could I recommend in the next release updating the (I think) XPI info to reflect this page as the home page for the extension instead of the current one. This page is more descriptive and has some documentation.

I want to add more information on the homepage later. But since that may take a while, it may be a good idea to change the link. Thanks for that information.

Marko:
Good point. That's a real bug!
I thought about closing the notification as soon as a new song starts playing, because it is a little bit confusing if the notification shows another song as the playing song. So maybe one will rate the wrong song!
What do you folks think about that?

Marko
Marko

how about displaying the rest duration of the notified/playing song?
When the song is over, display: "Song is over" or something. After the relative position of the next song (50%), close old notification and load new one (if neccesary).

Only thing I can think of that I'd like to see. Is the ability to change where the window pops up.

I do a lot of video streams. But I usually only have half of my monitor visible. So being able to tell it where to display the box would be very handy.

lycao: I already thought about that, but since there is now an official feature request, I will add that to the next release. Thanks!

Off-Topic (but you are actve and stuff):
I have no idea how to delete a picture at the Songbird-addon-page of one of my addons?!
There is only a button for upload :(

brudaswen

Marco: I also noticed that. The thumbnail image seems to be to tall and hides the delete button. Unfortunately I was only able to delete the image by installing the Firebug extension into Firefox. I modified to page and removed the image from the HTML code, so that I was able to see the delete button again.
Since this is quite bothersome, I filled a bug for that.

@brudaswen:
thx for the hint.
temporary blocking the picture with adblock is also a fastwork-around (right-click on the picture: create new blocking rule) and thereafter deleting the rule again.

@brudaswen: I have two other suggestions:
1st - An easy ability to turn off automatic notification without restarting Songbird would be useful. Some software (and game) doesn't like the notice window in full screen and appears just a blinking black box.
2nd - Global shortcut (for example: CTRL+SHIFT+N) to show notification window.

PS.: I know you don't want to make this extension to a general notifying add-on (yet!). I just wanted to share my ideas. :)

@EEKaWILL: I just installed PartyRuffle to confirm the bug. I tried to fix it and it seems to be solved. But since I am normally not using PartyRuffle, maybe you can confirm that the bug is really gone.
Can you please install this version and test again?

would it be possible to auto rate the unrated tracks. Like set it to 3 stars by default?

brudaswen
brudaswen

sizzle: Why and when do you want to do that?

sizzle
sizzle

I have like 10000 songs that haven't been rated. It's a pain to have to manually click on every single song to rate them. I have to remember to look at the song that is playing to see if I need to rate it. I use the stars more on a scale with 3 stars being zero.

sizzle
sizzle

I would love something where I could rate all my songs at once. However since you already are able to tell if a song hasn't been rated why not give the option to auto-rate?

brudaswen
brudaswen

Ok, I got the point. You can already give a bunch of songs the same rating within Songbird (manually).

  • Just create a new smart playlist (Ctrl+Alt+N) and set the Condition to "Rating"=="0 stars".
  • Afterwards you can select all songs (Ctrl+A) and edit their meta-data (right-click).

If you have a lot of unrated songs, maybe you should limit the amount of songs when creating the playlist and rate the songs block-wise and refresh the playlist afterwards to get the next unrated songs.

I hope you can life with that solution, because I think that adding this corner-case into the add-on would confuse a lot of users.

sizzle
sizzle

I agree with the corner-case. I was just looking for an add-on to "rate all". Thanks for the suggestion on the "view meta-data". I wonder if this is new functionality in one of the newer releases because I know a while back I tried a bunch of things with multiple songs selected to rate them all. Thanks for the help.

is there a possibility to define in the settings the pace of showing up and disappearing? like: 1 second for appearing. 500 milliseconds for disappearing.

btw. with my notebook (Dual Core, 1,8Ghz, Low Voltage), it takes massive amount of CPU load for the (dis)appearing animation. Don't know why. Maybe manually shortening the animation time would help.

brudaswen
brudaswen

Marko: I added a feature request for disabling/customizing the animation. For me the CPU load goes up from 10 % to 30 % on a Core 2 Duo (1,6 GHz).

I will try to solve the problem.

brudaswen
brudaswen

Marko: I created a version (0.6pre2) in which the animation is customizable.

After installing it, open a new tab and navigate to "about:config". There you can search for "extensions.rate-your-library.animation".

You will find two properties there:

  • extensions.rate-your-library.animation_step_size: Defines the number of pixels the window grows in each iteration.
  • extensions.rate-your-library.animation_step_time: Defines the time in milliseconds between each iteration.

So try to play around with these two settings. Raising the step_size will make the animation faster and is maybe what you should try first.

Please tell me if that somehow solves your problem.

Best regards
Sven.
