Text Store Simon

Capture text from the web or elsewhere and save it on a media item!

Text Store

Description

Allows you to copy text from a web page and paste it to the lyrics property of a media item. Text can be stored with or without HTML markup; both cases can be displayed by, e.g., LyricMaster. If you want to store whole web pages use Page Store.

Context menus

Text Store changes the web page context menu (right-click menu), providing new options to save selected text directly to the playing media item.

Text Store changes the control panel context menu to allow the contents of the clipboard to be pasted to the playing media item and for stored text to be removed.

The current control panel context menu options ('Display at top', 'Display at Bottom') remain available under the View menu, Player Controls item.

Drag and drop

Drag selected text and drop it on the faceplate to store it on the playing media item. To store it on any other media item, drag it to the library browser tab; the library media list will open: drop the text onto any media item.

The text will be stored according to the preference set in the preferences panel.

Auto Copy

If you have enabled this option, then when you hold the mouse down without moving after you have selected some text, Text Store will automatically copy the selected text to the clipboard. (A clipboard icon will pop up to show that this has occurred!)

Auto Paste

If this is enabled, if you move the mouse while continuing to hold the button down while the autocopy clipboard is showing, a 'drag' will start. The text will be dropped, if possible, when you let the mouse button up.

Saving

The current version of Text Store does not write changes to media item files; this may be provided in a later version.

NB:
You can copy and paste to and from external applications.
You cannot store text on anything other individual media items!
You need LyricMaster or some other add on to display the stored text.

Very handy indeed :)
just notice one issue for the moment, when dropping on (or "between" ;) ) a library item within a *smart* play list, you can drop on the column header only and it fires an error:
Erreur : [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE) [sbIMediaListView.getItemByIndex]" nsresult: "0x80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://text-store/content/main.js :: anonymous :: line 174" data: no]
Fichier Source : chrome://text-store/content/main.js
Ligne : 174
Of course it does not work.

On the main library or on a manual playlist, it does work though :)

Simon, please let me know what you think about that:

After using your add-on and also the new MusicBrainz, it stroke my mind that we may miss another useful feature in Songbird globally, and I wanted to have your advice before launching a new call for developers :)

We often need to navigate between tracks and web pages, like in this very extension, or when you want to retrieve manually an album art manually from a web page and paste it on a track.

For such actions, having a browser available in the right side panel instead of a tab, but with exactly the same options (on the right click menu) as in the main tabbed browser (inherited from it actually) would be very handy, don't you think? Thus you could browse both the web and your library at the same time. And if this version of Gecko permits it, then the web page could be zoomed out automatically to fit into the panel width.

This could be a separate multi-purpose add-on, but a nice companion to your own add-on.

By the way, I have no development skills, but maybe this panel browser should just inherit the tab browser features - thus avoiding developers of other add-ons to have to add a new right-click option to both browsers, or to twice develop drag&drop features like you did.

Does this make any sense?

(don't worry, the above was just an idea, let's focus on TextStore for now :) )

Now I've got Page Store out, I'll have a look at the error with smart play list (I expect that the same error will exist in Page Store).

Found anything else?
