Excellent, thanks Alfred.
Do you think that a manual action could be implemented as well, instead of automated only - even with the limit?
Let's say I put 0 as a limit to cancel automatic calculation, but I could use a menu option to run the calculation on the current list, whatever the number of item is.
Thanks

@klint, updated. You can click the item count label in the status bar to fire the action manually. Hope this works for large library situation. Not a menu option though.

Thank you so much!

I need it for transferring all of my well rate music and a well balanced mixture of all my unrated stuff to a 27,9 GB limited iPod.
This add-on helps a lot!

One issue though:
For the above mentioned purpose I use 2 smart playlists which are limited to 28,5 GB and 10,5 GB.
When I use this add-on, it displays 26,5 GB resp. 9,7 GB for them.
Any idea, if the smart playlists work incorrect or if it could be your add-on? In my opinion it could well be the smart playlist, because I wondered why 28,5 GB fit on my 27,9 GB capable iPod (which actually does work) ...

@Chlorophyll, you can right click at the media view column header and choose "size". Maybe some items in the library don't have size information so that they are not counted to the total time and size?

hi, I installed it with songbird 1.4, but I cannot find any way to actually use it. it is listed as an add on, but nowhere else.

I can't see it either

@riverrun, @ihavnoclue, it's possible that your library items amount > 1000 which is set as the default limit value due to performance concern. Here are two choices:

1. Go to "about:config" and search for "extensions.timesize.itemlimit". Adjust the limit value as appropriate.
2. Click the item count label in the status bar and choose "show total time and size".

alfred, that works. I have about 5000 items and I did not see any performance problem with calculating the time. Does your add-on have any other performance impact? If not,it's just what Songbird needs since it provide important information. Thanks.

another problem I have noticed: as I went through my various playlists, this add-on works with most of them, but not all. That is, it will calculate the number of items and total time (I assume it does so accurately)for most playlists, but for a few playlists, it does not seem to work at all. Any idea on the problem?

out of about 30 playlists, 7 do not calculate. the entire library does calculate.

@alfred

Your add-on does actually calculate the size absolutely correct.
I rechecked this by exporting my smart playlist with the limit of 28,5 GB to a folder on my harddisk via the add-on 'FolderSync' and checked the total size of the files in this folder via the properties of this folder in Win XP and it displayed 26,5 GB as total size of files which is what 'Total time and size statusbar' calculates.
It seems there is something wrong with the 'Limit size' feature of Songbird.

Thanks again for your add-on and your feedback.

Cheers,
Patrik

@alfred: Absolutely 5 stars! Just two suggestions:
- 1st: it would be better if the 'Show total time and size' context menu appears only by a right click,
- 2nd: and show total time and size by a double click.

:P

@riverrun, for the performance detail, you can check bugzilla bug 6704 and 18467. I've seen the problem myself as well with a pretty recent hardware configuration.

Could you be a little bit specific on the playlist problem? So the total time and size don't show up for some playlists, and the total item count is still there? How about choosing "show total time and size" in the context menu? It's possible that you'll have to wait a bit as the calculation is triggered by a timer. Also you could enable the "size" column for the media view to verify the size value is available.

@Hiromacu, that's doable. Thanks for the suggestions.

Love the add-on, just one suggestion: Would it be possible to make the time display into hours:minutes:seconds instead of decimals of minutes?

you don't know what this add-on means to me! i can now officially leave windows/itunes behind with this. just a couple suggestions, like andernd said show in secs, OR decimals, and show the ammount of size and length in multiple tracks selected (like with ctrl) but those are minor, the fact that this exists made my year!

This is a great add-on, but can you make the time display in hours and minutes? My brain doesn't easily convert 1.6 hours to real time!

Dose it have to recalculate every time? Could the info not be saved and recalled to save on CPU?
Thanks

and of cause be nice to see the convention you get with 'iWantyourmoney' to show days or hours and such.

@free30, thought a little bit about saving the information, but didn't get much progress. The media view can be changed in many different ways, especially in the filter pane view. We either need to store the values for all the combination and listen to the media list change (add/remove of the items), or recalculate every time.

Awesome :) This is useful when I make playlists that I eventually burn onto CD.
Works with no noticeable lag on songbird 1.4.3, linux, and a library of 11,000 items.

the bug where the time information is not displayed for certain playlists seems to be caused by one or more songs in the playlist not having any time in their metadata. as soon as songs without times are removed it works fine.

This is now broken for 1.8.1b1
I expect this is due simply to the fact that the default number of items shown in songbird has moved from the right-hand side to the left.

To get this working on the current version 1.7.3 (and possibly a few future versions) just open the timesize-0.1.4.xpi file with WinZip (or any other archive manager), edit the file install.rdf and change the em:maxVersion tag to this:

<em:maxversion>1.7.*</em:maxversion>
