CD Rip Support Songbird

Support for CD ripping

Description

The CD Devices Support add-on allows the user the ability to extract (or rip) raw digital
audio (in a format commonly called CDDA) from a compact disc and import it into Songbird. Metadata for ripped track(s) is also imported into Songbird by using the Metadata Lookup Manager integrated into Songbird.

Features include:
- Ability for user to select all (default) or chose individual tracks for rip
- Ability for user to set/modify Rip CD Setting via a preference pane
- Ability for user to edit their metadata prior to and after rip
- Ability for user to select between multiple CD metadata matches should one or more similar
entries be found, by the Metadata Lookup Manager, for the inserted CD.

This is great stuff... But can we have the CD's name instead of CD RIP in the side bar? (the RIP bit makes me think of death!)

Also its not giving me the option to rip in mp3! only Flac, Ogg and Wma =/

Remarks, suggestions, bugs:
- I have no problem with CD RIP (at all), but would be nice if you could make the CD's name optional,
- mp3 is missing me too,
- a small CD icon is missing before the CD RIP in the service pane (with animation effect when ripping is in progress),
- a visual feedback (in percent where is the ripping) would be useful after the CD RIP in the service pane,
- the ability to set destination folder of the ripping is missing,
- at my very firs ripping FreeDB Metadata Lookup Manager didn't find the CD's metadata, but WMP did (Jessica Simpson - In this skin),
- and after ripping sound tracks were not imported into Songbird,
- speed of the ripping was very slow, approximately 2x - 3x to ogg 256kbps (with WMP approx. 10x - 12x to mp3 256kbps)
- [View Metadata] option does nothing,
- by a double click on a sound track (in CD RIP view), CD playing doesn't begin.

Thank you for this add-on! :)

Othervise I like ogg. Much better audio compression format than mp3. Mp3 is a fossil, but very popular. Unfortunately my car's audio player knows only mp3 and I don't want to by an ogg capable one (if it already exists like that). :P

hrm ... i can't download either ... the download button is all washed out ...
I thought for a while that required me to register, and did so, but in vain.
No ripping here ... i'm afraid i'll have to start WMP again ...

Seems to require 1.4.0 to install, wont work on 1.2.0

Assorted issues... no mp3 ripping, and bitrate selection increments turn nonstandard when set to lowest and highest rates 45 and 500kbps

I thought that it was part of new features of the 1.4.0. Why do we need this add-on to make it work ?

It is not available on all platforms, hence it is presented as an add-on, for Windows only for the moment. More OSs may be supported later on.

A nice start, but sadly this isn't really of much value to me (& I'm guessing others) without mp3 support*.

My understanding is that it doesn't include mp3 support because of licensing issues... but it would at least be nice if it was built in a pluggable way so that you could use an alternate codec (like lame).

I guess I'll just keep using cdex for now...

* And before someone says to use a different format, yes, I realize that mp3 isn't necessarily the greatest, but its as good as any other format at a high enough bitrate. And a slightly larger file size is a trade off I'm willing to make (especially given space is cheap) to guarantee virtually 100% compatibility with random devices.

How can I choose where the songs rip to? Currently, they're going into the last folder I chose for downloaded tracks, even though I have it set to "Always ask me where to save files."

I've downloaded the add on, but don't get a CD icon, nor any way of starting the ripping process. The add on does appear in the add on's area, and it is installed, but still no ability to rip. I've got V1.4.2, Anyone know where to start? Thanks, Andrew

eastona: Exactly the same problem here with v1.4.3. But I am using Songbird with Windows 7 64-bit (in XP compatibility mode). Might this be the culprit? I hope Songbird will soon be officially compatible with Windows 7, 32- and 64-bit!

Using Windows 7 64-bit...Songbird 1.4.3...I can do a rip to ogg, but not to mp3. I understand there are licensing issues and whatnot, but couldn't we have something like what Audacity does, where you just have to download the dll from a third party and stick it somewhere? Also, I know you guys are working hard, so I don't expect mp3 support added tomorrow, but I would like to know whether there are plans. Thanks!

andrew: Glad to hear it should work. Can you give me a hint? Are you running Songbird in XP compatibility mode? Are any add-ons (in this case the CD rip add-on) then automatically in the XP box as well or what should I do? So far my Songbird can't even see a CD in the CD drive. I've got no idea what to do. I'd appreciate any help from anybody! Thanks in advance!

Well its a start but this CD rip sucks. It couldn't find the info for the cd I tried, a fairly popular one called Drops of Jupiter by Train.
I was unable to find any way to tell it how to name the files ripped unless perhaps I used "manage files", but no idea where the files I ripped would end up in and I don't want to manage files.
I couldn't get the songs to play as rarely do I rip the whole CD. I don't Songbird doesn't have CD playing capability, but shouldn't that have come before ripping???
As mentioned no mp3 support, but can understand where that is coming from. No album art support.
So a nice start, but not useful, a shame too because I want to use Songbird, but its still so half done.

I have the same problem as eastona and Cygnus2112. I have songbird 1.4.3.
When I try Import Media or Open Location, I get to view the CDs content, no ability to RIP CD only download the file, which is useless.
Also, shouldn't there be a possibility just to playback the CD. There must be some open source code that songbird can use to playback CDs.

I had the same issue as most - no option for the CD or CD-RIP when inserting a CD, despite Windows letting me pick "Rip with Songbird" and I fixed by installing the GEAR drivers:

http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php

Try that out, once I installed and started songbird I had a "CD Rip" option under the library. Win7 professional 64-bit, Songbird 1.4.3

Gantry, Then what is the point of having a CD Rip Support add-on if you need to download other software. You might as well download a decent software that Rips the CD with better features. I also use portable Songbird, so I do not have the option of installing other drivers.

Only one important feature is missing: The CD Ripper does not store the music in separate folders according to Artist/Composer and Album title.

I put the cd in the CDROM
I opened SongBird
CDRIP Support recognised the CD
I entered the Album name and Artist.

CDRIP Support listed all ten tracks as Track 1, Track 2 etc.
But only listed the TIME for Tracks 1 and 2.

Tracks 1 and 2 were ripped, and now CD Rip Support is stuck trying to rip Track 3 without any change to the indicator bar.

Definitely doesn't work with Songbird 1.4.3 under Windows 7. Insert a CD but ripping node/icon never appears. Spewing...anyone know a work around?

@noofny
I had the same problem with Songbird on Windows 7 64bit. Well, almost the same. And then after a few months of not using Songbird at all, I just booted it up today, inserted a CD without thinking, and voila Songbird recognized the CD and the CD Ripping add-on worked like a charm.

One thing that bothers me though is that OGG Vorbis at 256kbps takes forever to rip into. I take it this version is only allowed one core at a time? Would be nice if I could utilize all three cores while ripping.
