Focus LIB53

A simple and smooth skin/layout

Focus

Description

Unofficial 1.4 Compatible edition by Xerion: click here to download

"Just unzip the xpi inside and drag it into Songbird's addon dialog box !
Enjoy."

  --XeRiOn

Focus is a new layout, and a new skin, that blends the communities love of dark skins, my enthusiasm of light gloss, and a little minimalistic inspiration. Focus is very early in development so it's likely there are bugs. Please report bugs if you find them.

Is anyone getting a bug where a sorted column header draws the background wrong? Please leave a comment if you do. I though i fixed but the bug, but upon a fresh install of Ubuntu, the bug came back, and i'm trying hard to fix it.

!!WARNING!!-
  If you are using pane buttons addon, uncheck show/hide player controls in the preferences window. Once you hide the controls, the toggle button vanishes too.

Recommended Add-Ons:
Live Track-Time Slider
Pane Buttons (please read warning)

Developers:
This feather is completely open to examine, copy code from, or even build a skin off of it. But before you begin cracking open the xpi, remember that I'm not done with the skin or the layout. Once i am done, i will write a guide on building off of this layout.

Todo:
>Add a tooltip to the album art in the media control pane that contains a 128x128px image of the album art
>Fix bugs that you'll report :)
>Add pure player support (pure player support is postponed due to poor compatibility)
>Expanded volume and add a percentage notation
>add track time to the seekbar hover for efficient seeking
>Add a preferences menu allowing you to show and hide objects in the media control pane
>LyricMaster skin
>Grid View skin
>miniplayer skin (perhaps a new layout for that too?? maybe if someone posts a creative concept *hint* *hint*)
>Customizable background (images that rest on top of background will be transparent gradients for dynamic and fluid modification)

Credits:
Thanks to Atreiu, for pointing me out on where to start.
Thanks again to Atreiu, for scrollbar padding (Q4, line 945).
Thanks to seba_kerckhof for tooltip skinning block (Crow, lines 228, 234)
Thanks to Stevo, for Album Art XUL block and javascript from More Gonzo (now maintained by alfredkayser)

Looks fantastic - love the large centered player controls!

Great media-pane modifications, love the simple style of icons.
I've noticed one small problem in the Add-ons etc. menus: cannot read text on selected tab (because of the matching text and background colors).
Thanks for this one!

Thanks for leaving the comments. I was actually worried that things wouldn't work out too great on other systems, but judging by your comments, it seems things are working just fine, or you looked at my screenshots and like my artwork :P

@verso
I forgot to to fix that before release. There are parts of this release that aren't really permanent, but are just there to for usability. For example, the browser tabs are ripped straight from Aero Bird Pro. Looks like i forgot to patch the normal tabs though. I'll fix it for the next update probably later today. Thanks for pointing that out.

I've just installed this theme, and I'm absolutely loving it, especially the centred play controls. Keep up the good work.

Amazing!! It seems like just a few days ago you had a GetSatisfaction topic suggesting that someone make a feather like this, and you've already learned to code one and made it yourself. I see you have an album art tooltip on your to-do list, but the album art doesn't show up next to the now playing song information for me, even though the song I'm playing does have album art. The only suggestions I have are to see if it is possible to make the volume slider dynamically expand when the Songbird window is enlarged, because it can look a little small when the window is very large. And also, it is hard to see the right-most box in the shuffle icon when it is not activated; at first, I thought it only had two boxes at first and was smaller than the repeat icon, but then I realized it wasn't.

Thanks. Expect an update hopefully later today

@tdmurphy
Can i have some more info on your no art problem? Perhaps a screenshot, and what OS you're using. Thanks for posting. And i was in a hurry when i uploaded this yesterday, so i forgot to add some things to the todo. The expanded volume is supposed to be on the list, and i should also be able to show volume percentage. Just read the new todo in a few minutes :)

@LIB53: Cool! An other great layout! I have to do a new one as well, but I'm not so good in coding. Anyway, now I do my StarCraft project! :P Keep up the good work. :)

Here is a screenshot of my Songbird with Focus:
http://picasaweb.google.com/tdmurphy/SongbirdScreenshots#5356520644794098850

The song that is currently playing has album art embedded, but the artwork is not showing up in the box with the eighth notes in it next to the currently-playing song information. I am assuming that is what that box is for at least; or is it just an icon for the currently playing song information? There is not album art there in your screenshot either, so maybe I just assumed too much about it. I'm running Songbird 1.2 in Mac OSX.

Another problem I am having is visible in the screenshot: the column header that the song list is currently being organized by looks strange. In the screenshot my song list is organized by Title, and the image it uses for the column header seems to stand out.

The brighter shuffle icon looks excellent though, and I'm glad to hear about the expandable volume slider.

@tdmurphy
Thanks for the screenshot. I've actually been wanting a Mac screenshot for a while now so could see the titlebar.

 Firstly, the album art is supposed to show up in the media control pane. I'm sorry to say that i honestly don't know why that's happening. I took the code straight from more gonzo, so maybe it would be of some help to verify if album art is working in more gonzo for you. I wish it would work for you, but at the same time i hope i no one else is having this issue.

 And i think i fixed the titlebar just now. I'll send the update right after this. The error with the titlebar is that i specified 13px sans-serif, but it appears that it is ignoring this font setting. In the update, i added right underneath that min and max heights of 17px, so hopefully that will force the correct size. Here's how things should be looking: screenshot

 Please tell me if the upcoming update solves at least the titlebar issue. I appreciate the feedback. I wouldn't have known about the titlebar bug if yo hadn't brought it to my attention :P

Wow LIB53 you are truly amazing. The aero bird skins blew me away and this one raises the bar yet again. You're truly inspirational. I wish i used songbird again because this would definitely be my favorite skin!

Thanks Brendy, but why don't you give Songbird another shot? It's improved quite a bit.

Awesome feather, just got two little problems, the artwork isn't showing up in the left corner and I can't use the pane button when I'm in a playlist to hide the left menu. But otherwise a great fether love the centered buttons :D oh and btw I use Vista :)

I'd love to :( The only problem i have with it is it's memory footprint. It's improved alot i know but it uses a fair amount of memory since it's both media player and browser. I'll have to wait until it's a little lighter :)

@Und3rw0r1d
I have some suspicions about the album art, so i'll be checking on that. As for the hiding the service pane (you do have pane buttons right?), i have to refresh this option by going into the pane buttons preferences and rechecking the box that allows me to hide the service pane. I'll be implementing this feature into this layout eventually, so until i get that fixed, i suppose this is what you'll have to do. I was actually wondering if this problem happened to other people, so thanks for leaving the comment.

@Brendy
If you look at the roadmap, the next release is supposed to aim (using the focus on this comment board seems weird) at improving footprint size. So hopefully you'll be able to use Songbird this August release. :D

great work LIB, that definitely shows that glossy goodness is not the only stuff you are good at =)

this is very cool indeed, and has a very rich quality fashion feeling to it. Especially the minimalist arrows, sliders and volume control are ace!

such a great concept, hope you polish it to perfection soon =)

LIB, I installed the More Gonzo add-on and the album art for it did work. The interesting thing is that the album art also showed up in Focus after installing More Gonzo. Perhaps some of the album art code in Focus is linking to some of the code in the More Gonzo add-on, so it will only work if you have both installed.

Also, if you ever need a screenshot of something specific in OSX, just ask and I will take one for you.

Thanks. I'm making good progress with this skin, so keep watching for more.

I was suspicious of that, and i tested it with the same results. I'm in a bit of a hurry right now, so I'll get back to this later. Thanks for the tip.

Good news! I fixed the album art issue. It was actually a stupid mistake. In focus.xul i said to look for the script in more-gonzo instead of focus. It's fixed now, and I'll upload it with some other tweaks.

I wouldn't be so quick as to say that pane buttons work. Try opening a tab and then attempt to hide the service pane. I get a feeling it might not work.

My favorite skin period. Has some issues with not being able to see some things, like rating stars and has no default working theme for lyricmaster. Besides the small issues, this really is a slick skin. I am sure it will only get better.

 Cheers

Try right-clicking somewhere near the volume bar. You might find a context menu with editable rating stars. :)
And i also think it's about time i make a lyricmaster skin, so expect that soon.

@LIB53 You were right -.- but I can still fix it by rechecking the box that allows hiding the service pane :) so until you fix it I'll have to do that :P

Hey again LIB, I just noticed that the Personas for Songbird icon messes with the album art and song info, I figure the easiest way to solve that is to disable the addon since I don't use it with this skin anyways, but if you could throw in some CSS to move it over with the rest of the icons that'd be great. Also, the Last.fm plugin is hard to read with so much black, if you could skin that addon that'd be awesome. Oh, lastly, the lyrics button added by LyricMaster that's placed in the song list area on every song could use a makeover too. Love the skin, great work!

I've been being too lazy to do any work right now. I'll get to that stuff once I'm feeling alot less lazy, which isn't any time soon because I'm about to be really busy. Sorry if I'm sounding discouraging.

I'm actually getting back into a developing sort of mood. I think I'll get cracking bugs tomorrow, but i really want to get part of the customizable background feature i recently i came up with done. For the next release, i hope to have lyricmaster skinned, bugs other than the service pane bug mentioned in this comment thread fixed, and background feature available at least to people that can open an xpi and repackage. I might as well mention bumping the max version because i'll forget everything i said right now when i wake up tomorrow.

Awesome work man, I tried Songbird before 1.0 was released. I am trying it out again 1.4.0b3. Seems promising. And your feather is the best for the Dark Ravens among us !! So I edited the install.rdf to run it with 1.4+. For the Focus lovers here is the link.

http://sites.google.com/site/bubaic/focus_0.5.5.1_.xpi.zip

Just unzip the xpi inside and drag it into Songbird's addon dialog box !
Enjoy.
