sleepTimer Simon

Sleep and nap timer for the control panel, with lots of customisable options.

sleepTimer

Description

Sleeptimer is a very customisable sleep timer which shows up Songbird's control pane.

It counts down from a time you set and when the time is up, optionally, shows your message; cuts, fades or finishes the playing track; pauses; plays a media item; starts an external application and waits, closes or returns to Songbird.

Setting

Adjust the time setting by hovering over the figure you want to change and using the mouse wheel, or click on the figure and use the pop up keypad. The pop up keypad will not let you enter a number greater than 59 for minutes or seconds or 99 for hours.

Click on the colon between hours & minutes or minutes & seconds to cycle through your sleep timer default times (set in preferences).

Press the green arrow to start the countdown; press the red dot to pause. You can change the time while the timer is active, if you want.

The display shows hours & minutes and changes to minutes & seconds when less than an hour remains.

Hiding and showing

Minimize the timer display with the tiny minimize icon in the timer (or press Ctrl+S). This does not stop the timer and the icon on the control pane flashes so you know sleeptimer is active. The flashing changes color when less than a minute remains.

When the timer display is open, you get a highlight when there is less than 1 minute left. The highlight color changes when 30 seconds or less remain. You can change highlight colors in the preferences panel.

Certain feathers may hide these highlights, change their colors or use their own highlighting.

If you close the timer with the tiny close icon in the display (or Ctrl+Alt+ S), the timer stops and no icon is displayed. Use the View menu command or Ctrl+S or Ctrl+Alt+S to get the timer back.

Shutdown Actions

You can set the actions to be taken when the time expires from the preferences pane. A default external application is included (but not enabled). 'XP-shutdown.bat' closes XP and turns off your PC. Enable it or select any other local app. to run from the preferences panel. Shutdown files for Vista and Windows 7 are also included.

Drag and drop a media item over the sleeptimer display to have it play back. When you drag a single media item over the timer, 2 drop targets appear; the left target adds the media item into your other sleeptimer settings (replacing any previous media item); the right target disables other options so that sleeptimer acts as a simple nap timer.

Click on the bottom right corner of the sleeptimer display as a shortcut to the sleeptimer preferences panel.

Resuming.

Audio Bookmarks can bookmark where you are up to in a track and resume playback from there when you restart Songbird.

Contact.
Please report any problems to me at songbird.sleeptimer@gmail.comand I'll try to fix any issues but I now don't have any plans to add to this extension.

Very nice! Can't wait for the features on your ToDo-List :-)

One suggestion:
I need the sleep-timer maximal once a day, so I think it would be cool, to have an option to complete hide the sleep-timer & its icon. My suggestion: add a menu-entry in "Tools", called "Show SleepTimer in Media-Control-Pane" or something, and checkmark that can be ticked on/off.

Thank you work!

Sorry if my comment on CoolClock was a bit harsh, but this is the kind of thing I was talking about! This add-on has so much feature-packed potential! I look forward to it giving a customizable pop-up alert box with a message I set (For me it would be "Do your homework!"). It could also work as a behind-the-scenes countdown. Even on while songbird or my computer is off "countdown until the concert: 4 days 10 hours, etc." I don't know if that functionality is possible, but I would love to see it in the future.

And maybe user-set colors... the yellow is kinda... ugly... XD

@atreiu: good idea, will do (do you know of any other addon which does this?)

@NK4551: you're forgiven: I will definitely add a 'show alert' to the next version. I am looking at the feasibility of count to any future date and customizable colors. Meanwhile, you could replace/edit 'pane-icon yellow.png' in the extensions skin folder.

@Simon: Good idea! It can be useful.
Bug: It's collisions with FocusTrack. If sleepTimer is enabled, statusbar-icon of FocusTrack disappear.
Suggestions:
1 - The x button at the top-right corner should close the whole timer face (instead of disable) and you should add an other button to disable.
2 - The timer face should be in center (vertical) position. Now it's higher than center.

Thanks for this add-on! :p

Simon,
Thanks for this addon, I use it regularly.

May I ask:
Is it possible to clean up the Green play button on the timer? it has these white outlines that makes it look somewhat incomplete. :(.

@ deOmega: will do, in next version.

New version posted; I look forward to feedback on the new features; I hope the icons look a bit sharper.

TODO:
1) resolve FocusTrack conflict
2) vertical alignment of timer
3) enable selection (drag and drop?) of a media item to play on return to Songbird (so timer can be used as a nap timer).

@Simon,

Absolutely magnificent update. Really well done. Thank you.

New version with ability to play a media item as part of the options uploaded.

Main screen should now be skinnable; (let me know if you want to skin the pop up screen, which I have not moved into CSS).

Some improvement with Focus Track (but its icon disappears when sleeptimer popup screen opens!)

I don't plan to add any more functionality to this but there is still some tidying up to do:

1) vertical alignment of timer
2) Focus Track issue

This is getting better and better (nice touch with the media playback option)! Tried skinning your add-on and it's coming along nicely; only one question: to be honest, I don't particularly like the red background pulsation in mini-mode; I'd like to switch it for an animated half-moon image instead. Is this possible with the current skinning options?
Thanks Simon!

Verso,

Thinking about it, I don't think you can do all you want at present.

I will leave the current 'color choosing' options as they are, so that user chosen colors can be shown through any transparent parts of whatever icon is used. If you don't want user chosen colors to show, just replace the icon with a non-transparent one (background color = your skin background color)!

#sleeptimer_icon_box > #sleeptimer_icon [
list-style-image: url('chrome://SKINNAME/skin/NEW-ICON.png');
}

To let you change the icon to an animated one, I will have to change the code to set an attribute on the icon_box, so you can test:

#sleeptimer_icon_box [timing='true'] > #sleeptimer_icon [ //= active
list-style-image: url('chrome://SKINNAME/skin/NEW-ACTIVE-ICON.png');
}
#sleeptimer_icon_box [timing='special'] > #sleeptimer_icon [ //for the last minute
list-style-image: url('chrome://SKINNAME/skin/NEW-LAST-MINUTE-ICON.png');
}

OK?

Thanks very much; decided to go with the existing options, at least for now, but I'll probably try out some changes in the future.
(If you have any time to spare, please check out the feathered sleepTimer in the last Ne+ version.)

Hi, I posted about the align issue in Ne+ comments.

I have one more request, I hope you don't mind: I'd like to see the option to change the sleepTimer background image as well (I tried to implement this change with the existing skinning options, but had little luck, I guess css changes are overwritten).

Also (and this officially makes me picky): I think it would look nicer, if the active state (maximized mode) would be signaled by a change in secs-label color. - Just a thought.

Thanks!

Thanks for alignment fix.

The sleeptimer box does not have a background image; it picks up the standard sb faceplate styling by having id='faceplate'. That was the only way I could find to apply the appropiate sb styling. I raised a bug about that.

I'm happy to insert an element so that you can apply an image between the background and the digits and to move my highlighting to my CSS, so it can be changed. Then you can do:

#sleeptimerBox > #faceplate [timebox='timing'| 'highlight'|'special'] > #timerBackgroundImage|#activeHighlight|#seconds {
...
}

for active, last minute, last 30secs changes to background, highlight box and/or seconds text etc..

On a related but different topic: have you had a look at .searcher? It's the alpha release of an 'awesome' style toolbar, I started it on a while back and need to get on with. But I'm really at a loss as to how to proceed with presenting & styling the query results. If you had a minute to look at what (little) I've done so far and give your feedback I'd be most grateful.

Hi I like this idea, I like the shutdown option but will it shutdown Windows Vista??

@kanejo:

I'm not sure (I haven't got a Vista PC to try it on). What happens if you activate XP-shutdown.bat in sleeptimer?

over 2 years ago

I, now, don't believe that 'XP-shutdown.bat' will shutdown Windows Vista and Windows 7 but the command:

                         shutdown /s /t 10

should give a 10 second warning and shutdown Windows and turn off the PC on both Visa and Windows 7.

I'd be grateful, if someone would try it and let me know if it works, so I can make batch files to include with a future version of sleepTimer.

Last (few?) version(s) may be knocking out certain CSS settings, in SB or other add-ons (including some of my own!).

I'd appreciate more reports of this - with lots of details, please, so I can track down the bug...which is looking well hidden!

Great Add-on!

Feature request:

1) Ability to stop playback (but leave Songbird open) after current song. Best would be a extra button or icon within or outside the SleepTimer frame AND/OR a short-cut like "Strg + V" in Winamp.

To be honest: I don't understand the function of drag and drop a song to the right side of your frame. Does it have the same result as "Strg + V" in Winamp?

2) Option of Standby additionally to Shut-down

1)You can stop playback after the playing song, when the time is up, if the sleepTimer preferences are set as:

Stop playback - after finishing track
no track to play
no external file to start

Sleeptimer will finish the playing track and then just

Stay on the sleepTimer screen or
Return to Songbird.

Clicking the green arrow in the Sleeptimer display with time= 0:00 should cause SleepTimer to kick in immediately! So you get stop after current track.

There is another add-on: 'Stop after Current Track., which might do what you want.

I don't use Winamp, what does its 'Strg + V' do?

2) Just choose the appropriate 'Finally' option, on the SleepTimer preferences panel to 'Stay on the Sleeptimer screen' or
'Return to Songbird'.

I think I'll add a 'do sleepTimer actions now' shortcut ('Ctrl+Alt+S', if poss,) in the next version. (Probably next version bump).

thx Simon (also for the addon recommendation)

Trashcan

Great. Discrete, yet always present; simple, yet complete.

Some suggestions though: The timer shouldn't be activated if you press GO when the countdown time is set to 0:00:00. And the crescent button looks a bit clumsy... Couldn't you give it the same looks as the repeat and shuffle buttons? Or would this not work as soon as you change the feathers?

Trashcan:

I'll stop the trigger at 0:00 when I add a 'do sleepTimer actions now' shortcut ('Ctrl+Alt+S', if poss,) (in the next sleepTimer version probably next Songbird version bump).

Sleeptimer is fully featherable so each featherer can make the buttons, images, colors whatever they wish.

Cheers.

Hi, first thanks for this great add-on. It has worked nicely until songbird has been upgraded to 1.8.0 . Now countdown works but nothing happend at the end of time. Whatever the task I've chosen. So I roll back to 1.7.3 as I need this to sleep well ;).
