Birdtorrent ashughes

An extension that provides torrent support for Songbird

Birdtorrent

Description

BitTorrent support for Songbird. Download media directly from a torrent tracker to your Library. Please read the release notes before downloading. Despite being a 1.0 release, this add-on is still quite experimental.

Release Notes

The following is a reader-friendly list of all the issues with Birdtorrent. For a complete bug list, please click here.

    * You must use Songbird 1.1 or later and enable Watch Folders
    * Ubuntu 32-bit is the only officially support OS at this time
    * More than one torrent cannot be downloaded at a time
    * Resume is not yet supported
    * Songbird must be restarted to perform a subsequent download
    * Watch Folders must be enabled and a folder must be set to use the auto-import feature
    * Sometimes, download information is not updated, appears as perpetually initializing

Unsupported Operating Systems

    * Fedora - the Fedora security system blocks my component from loading. Until I can resolve this issue, Fedora is unsupported.
    * Windows (Any) - I have not tackled compiling all the necessary libraries for this addon on Windows yet. I plan to get this working soon.
    * Mac OSX - I have not tackled compiling all the necessary libraries for this addon on OS X yet. I plan to get this working soon.

I am glad to see that the ability to download torrents in Songbird is off to a good start (geekshadow recently ported FireTorrent over as well). I know they are in early stages, but I wanted to post some ideas that I hope will one day be possible with these torrent add-ons in Songbird. I think the ability to select which files/folders should be downloaded in the torrent is essential for downloading things like discographies. You must also be able to keep files seeding and to see the seed/leech ratio for sites like what.cd where seeding is especially important.
And I cannot test this right now because I'm running osx, but from the screenshot it appears that this add-on displays downloads in a browser tab. Would it be possible to make them appear in the "Downloads" item already found in the main sidebar, so it does not take up space in the tab bar? And finally, thank you for working on this.

Thanks for the great suggestions. All of what you suggested is something I want to work on for this addon. I want the downloading UI to be far more integrated, as the Download node is. I don't think I would use the download node but perhaps have a Torrent Download node. Being able to both see and control certain information (peers, ratios, bandwidths) is something I want with this add-on eventually as well. In a nutshell, I want to make it as featured as the standard torrent clients out there.

My first priority is going to be getting some of the major bugs fixed. As soon as that is in place, I will work on getting a Mac and Windows version of this add-on up and running. Following that, I can start working on some of these features.

Thanks again for the feedback and your interest in my work.

A quick suggestion for people who use this: make a Firefox bookmarklet so you can easily switch to Songbird from a torrent site you might currently be browsing in Firefox. It helps me a lot.

I'm wondering if it would be at all useful to people for me to make a companion extension for Firefox that does this automatically.

One idea would be when you are on a torrent site in Firefox, you click a button to have the page open automatically in Songbird.

A more complex might be to have the click of a torrent be passed off to Songbird. Of course, this would only work for those users that have Birdtorrent installed.

I'm open to suggestions on this idea.

I think a Firefox extension would be good, just because the ability to view the current page in Songbird might make more sense as a button than as a make-shift bookmarklet. That way you could drag it to that bar at the bottom of the FF window, or in the main toolbar, and it could have a image of the Songbird (whichever version of it). But the bookmarklet is certainly fine if not.

Hi again, I just wanted to let you know that someone made the type of Firefox companion extension you mentioned: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11862

Does anyone know if this or any of the other songbird bittorrent extensions support IPv6?

@appsciguy
The method I used to compile libtorrent allows IPv6 to be implemented, but I have not done so yet. AFAIK, there are no other bittorrent add-ons for Songbird.
