System tray support Mook

Hides the Songbird window and places an icon in the Windows system tray / notification area instead.

Description

MinimizeToTray, for Songbird 0.4 / 0.5pre, based on work in (Mozilla) bug 325353.
New in 0.0.0.20080325:
notify now has a pref. Tools -> Addons -> (find MinimizeToTray) -> Options.
misc fixes.
Known issues:
- Icons may not always be correct
- Needs to be re-done to use the moz svn toolkit tray icon support
- Windows only
- Not enough testing (ever :p )

Good job Mook !

suggestions:
–restore by double click
–more icon choices/ability to customize icon

also, I don’t really like the position of the hide button… I prefer it to override the regular minimize button or at least be to the left. But overall, I like this very much! Very useful. Thanks!!

Noted. Double click is something I hit myself, too. Icon choices might show up once I actually have a pref dialog.

I’m being lazy in terms of hide button placement at the moment–it already exists in the window, I’m just unhiding and borrowing it. (It’s the button that shows up in cheezy video window.) Will certainly consider actually making my own in a better position sometime later though!

Possible to minimize to tray and remove it from the taskbar?

Double click for sure too!

Working nicley though, however I have no use for a minimise to system tray if it’s still in the taskbar.

Wicked the last update fixed it being in the toolbar, nice work ;)

Another couple of things (I feel like such a jerk)

-Songbird doesn’t come up as the active window when it’s restored, that’s mildly annoying.

-Uses the same amount of memory as it would if it restored to a window, a lot less is used when it’s minimised to the task bar.

Found that there is song notification without the option to turn it of.
I’m sure you knew this already, just that it took me ages to figure out why I was getting two song notifications (this and album art manager).

I don’t like the song notification window, is there any way to turn it off or can you include an option as moshakirby stated please.

Is anyone having compatability issues with the Mashtape extension (or Mashup, I forget)?

Also I'm having issues (using Vista x64) with Songbird staying in the taskbar as well as an icon appearing in the tray. It's not too big a deal as I have a widescreen so can afford the space used up but thought it was worth mentioning

I’m running Vista x32 and I also have the icon in the taskbar as well as the system tray. Unfortunately, I don’t have a widescreen monitor. This is another vote for an option to remove the taskbar icon (also, double click restore would be awesome).

Thanks!

AMAZING. Songbird now minimizes and returns via double click in Vista 32. Talk about service! Nice work Mook!

My english is not so good, but I try my best.

When I install and enables the MinimizeToTry Extension, my mashTape extension is disabled.
And I must disable the MinimizeToTry extension to enable the mashTape extension again.

How can I solve this problem?

I have Songbird 0.4 and windows with Service Pack 2. Do you need any more information?

I hope you understand my bad english. :)

I had this same problem but with the latest update to Mashtape the problem has gone away.

fixed, dunno, and fixed. (The notification thing was an oversight; the not going away from taskbar was a bug)

This add-on seems to have a compatibility problem with the "Pause/Play/Stop buttons" add-on. Installing the "System Tray Support" add-on causes the Pause and Stop buttons to disappear when both add-ons are installed. Problem occurs in Songbird 0.4 and 0.5. I'm running Songbird on Windows XP.

Could be just me, but it seems that this extensions doesn’t work properly in Songbird 0.5 final.

Unfortunately doesn’t seem to work for me with 0.5 final either.

Nope problem still occurs, it decided to finally not work after a few re-openings and I’ve had to uninstall it to get Mashtape working (as well as the Start/Stop buttons extension mentioned below)

I’d love to be able install and use this addon with 0.6. I like having the extra button to send it to tray instead of the MinimizeToTray addon’s behavior of replacing the regular minimize or close function. Also, MinimizeToTray is broken in 0.6 anyway.

I just downloaded the addon and edited the maxversion in the install.rdf and set it to 0.6.* and it works like a charm.

I concur that upping the text node of the maxversion element to “0.6.” (without the double quotes) works like a charm.
For those that don’t want to wait for a formal update to this plugin:
  • Download this plug-in from a web browser (since songbird 0.6 won’t let you download it) and place it on your desktop.
  • Unzip the songbird-tray.xpi file.
  • In the resulting set of files, open up the “install.rdf” file in a text editor.
  • change the maxversion element text node to “0.6.” without the quotes. (If you can’t figure this out at this point, you shouldn’t be doing this workaround.)
  • Rezip the files up in a zip file using 7zip, winzip, etc. DO NOT PLACE THE FILES IN A FOLDER BEFORE DOING SO. Use the “add to zip” functionality provided by most Windows-esque zip programs. Change the extension to .xpi.
  • Load the fixed plug-in from the songbird add-ons screen.

Hi I’m new to songbird and would really like this feature to work before I completely change over from windows media player in Vista. I tried the workaround above and couldn’t get it to work – but I’m a complete novice when it comes to editing these types of files so wasn’t surprised. Does anyone have an idea when formal update will be available?

I did the hack but had to change it to 0.7 because I've got 0.6.1.

Anyway - works great, but would like to see it override the close button and also work when you hit minimize instead. The extra "hide" button is nice, but no one ever hits that.

Tested jeremyosborne's procedure with a later version (it's easy enough to copy the Sonbird version number from the help screen and replace the "0.6" - makes it work fine!

If you're using Songbird version 0.7,
change the <em:maxversion>0.6pre</em:maxversion> to <em:maxversion>0.8pre</em:maxversion>

..so if you're using Songbird version 0.6.1, change the 0.6 part to one version higher- 0.7.

Finally!!!!

Although you may want to update the description to include how to install it so that people do not have to trawl through comments.

TWO SUGGESTIONS
First up, for reference, I'm running Win XP:

1. Change/add the icon for collapsing to the system tray to a "." instead of an "x". It seems only in AURA that I get the arrow icon - other feathers just show and "x" that looks the same as the end program button.

2. Rather than having a double click restore the Songbird window, it would be very handy to be able to configure behaviour of mouse clicks on the system tray icon, similar to that of STP (see http://systrayplay.free.fr/) so that the user could decide what the clicks do.

Another suggestion. I've noticed that when I restore Songbird from the systray under XP that it doesn't have focus. Rather, it reappears in the taskbar and you have manually select it to bring the window up again. Why not make this an OPTION whereby the user can decide what happens?
