If you want to try it:
Download the xpi (for example here v1.2.0.0) and change in it with an archive program (for example 7zip) the file install.rdf:

Find the following:

    <em:targetapplication>
      <description>
        <em:id>songbird@songbirdnest.com</em:id>
        <em:minversion>1.1.1</em:minversion>
        <em:maxversion>1.2.0a</em:maxversion>
      </description>
    </em:targetapplication>

and change it to (bold=changes)

    <em:targetapplication>
      <description>
        <em:id>songbird@songbirdnest.com</em:id>
        <em:minversion>1.1.1</em:minversion>
        <em:maxversion>1.2</em:maxversion>
      </description>
    </em:targetapplication>

So the Add-On will be accepted from Songbirds up to Version 1.2.
Now you install the xpi and hope that it works.

I don't know every other feather, and I haven't looked at the most other feathers's internals... so it is difficult for me to say: Others doesn't do this.

... the only thing I don't think that much other feathers do is a so-called custom layout. So simplyBlack comes with a complete skin, and many others just re-design Purple Rain; other "full" feathers I know are Gonzo 2.0 and Purple Rain itself. Both scale with layout.css.dpi for me (Win7x64).

I have no other feathers without custom layout, so maybe those don't work?!
