Stuffy
Great! Thanks.
Btw, it works with the MacBook keyboard as well. Just in case anybody got confused by the picture...

Adds playback support for Apple keyboards that have multimedia keys on them.
For those interested, the source is hosted here:
https://bitbucket.org/nkreeger/whitedragon/src
Information about building the extension against publicsvn is included in the README file in that repository.
Updated version info to work with 2.2.0.
Great! Thanks.

Finally!
Thank you very much, this is the addon I waited for weeks! :D
works great on my Macbook Pro (early 2008)
Awesome, thanks so much!
You rock Nick! Poot!!!!
Works great on my macbook.
Thank you so much!! Have been waiting very long for this plugin.
Only thing I need now is a working now playing list :P
Since it's apparently possible to make use out of the media keys for people that have keyboards with them. Is it possible to re-route the keys to normal key combination like (cmd+left arrow, etc...)
I have a late 2006 model MBP, no media keys. I love songbird and even dropped itunes all together. But one thing I miss was being able to switch, pause/play songs from any application with hotkeys.
Stupid question im sure, but im having problems installing it? Can someone please help!!
I have figured it out haha. Easy-peasy. Really likeing Songbird! Such a great alternative for itunes
I just want to say....
THANK YOU!!!
This was the last thing keeping me from completely switching to Songbird on my Macbook.
This works perfectly on the MacBook4,1
Works fine. Great extension. :)
Great!!!! I use a MBP and works amazing. Very thank you.
@xenetic: how do you remap the multimedia keys to a regular key combination?
can you make one for a logitech S 530 keyboard? it won't wooooooork :(
thanks I hated hitting the P/P button and having iTunes open
thank you for the plugin! works perfectly
It's great
Works perfectly in my mac mini
Great add-on, when do you expect to have 1.2.0a support? Because this version really improves library performances.
Any chance of getting this to work with non-Apple brand keyboards? They're able to control iTunes, I just need a comparable command to give it for Songbird.
thank you!
Thanks! Finally I have global hotkeys for songbird!
Woohoo, yes! Carpal tunnel be gone, thanks so much!
uhh THANK YOU! this greatly helps my transition from iTunes
Any chance of updating it for 1.2? It's in beta now, so it should be doable :-)
woo It took me sometime to searching for this...i got it! i got it !!!
works perfectly with my macbook...
Also do checkout the support for the Apple remote control Add- onn Another great add on...
THanks

Thanks for 1.2!
How on Earth do you people make it work with MB Pro? Help me please, this is the last thing I need to be fully satisfied with Songbird. Thanks!
When I press a media key, like for example the play/pause one what happens is that:
1. Songbird stops playing the current file (as intended)
2. iTunes starts up (meh)
Any way to disable this?
I'm running Snow Leopard and iTunes 8.2.1...
hey nick,
as a workaround, i've renamed /Applications/iTunes.app to /Applications/iTunes_off.app and it doesn't launch anymore now...
I can live with that :)
Is it possible to add this functionality: rewind song when back-key is pressed and skip forward when fowrad-key is pressed?
mh, sounds promising. but i still don't get how to remap to normal key-combinations like xenetic did(?) since i have a mbp with no mediakeys.
can anyone help?
hey, this extension seems to be nice, but it's x86-only. could you please give me a quick how-to on compiling it (just what sources exactly i need to check out for dependencies, where i have to put your plugin's sources, which commands to issue to just build the extension). I use songbird 1.1.3 on PPC64, a contributed build from Thomas Legg (http://www.the-eleven.com/tlegg/).
Thanks very much in advance :-)
Neat!!
Can you perhaps make something like this for the Razer Lycosa keyboard??
SongBird needs some sort of Itunes hotkey emulation for it to be supported by Lycosa.
The Plugin works very smoothly, but doesn't have one function that we can do with i tunes. With itunes, if you hold the Fwd and Rwd keys, you can forward or rewind the ngoing song, which doesn't happen with this add on on Songbird. But still, a great add on.
I got iTunes disabled by doing this terminal-thing from this link.
http://superuser.com/questions/31925/stop-play-pause-button-opening-itunes-in-snow-leopard/39390#39390
Works fine so far!
VLC and other media players have a feature where holding down >> and << do 10s jumps in those relative directions, rather than changing tracks.
Can this get added to the Add-on?
Outstanding - thanks.
Was stunned when i found that although the Macbook pro f8 etc could control VLC amongst others - could not believe iTunes forced itself open when used... I don't even use itunes.
Have uninstalled iTunes - good riddance. Can't believe any music player doesn't have a proper 'now playing' list - still odd it has to be 'added on' to Songbird, but at least it's there!
Thanks again
the install button is grey. why could this be?
kind of a silly request: the add-on doesn't work when there is no keyboard plugged in. I am trying to map the keys to my iPhone through Air Mouse app.
Anyone got a work-around or perhaps can the functions (play/ pause/ skip) be assigned to standard keys like space bar, etc...
Any chance the source will ever be available again? It's not available at the give url anymore...
Hey hey:D Please make an updated version of this for the new Songbird release:D It' would be very kind of you^
This one is not working with the latest Songbird version (1.7.2). Can you, please, make a fix?
... overwritting the maxVersion variable in install.rdf didn't worked though..
Version bump anyone? :)
Hi, can you make a fix for this addon? or post the source of sbAppleMediaKeyComponent.dylib?
+1 post the source or fix the problem!!
Update:
I spoke to the developer of this extension. Here is his message:
----
Hi Cavin,
Sorry for the short delay, I was out of town all last week. Yes, I did build the apple media keys extension. It does need to be updated to incorporate all of the changes that have been made to our build system (it's a bit of work). The other issue is that Apple changed around event dispatching for those keys (fwiw they're passed through kernel space) and I haven't had a chance to look around for a solution.
The source is open, and I was hosting it on a mercurial repo on a machine that was just taken out of service. I'll try and post the source code to that (and some other extensions I have) up on bitbucket this week.
----
So that's good news. If he doesn't fix it anytime soon (not sure if that meant he will or not), then at least someone else will hopefully give it a try. :)
Updates, pleeeeeeeeeeeease!!!
No update for this plugin is big stopper for me to upgrade to the new Songbird 1.7.3, please, make a fix asap.
Thanks guys!
Nick, I hope you, Mook and Craig can work this out since this is a very handy add-on. Please keep it alive and keep it compatible to new Songbird versions.
Oh, and since there is a new home for the sourcecode: please fix the link to the source code at the top. Try to keep things nice and working. That would be great.
I miss this feature in the new Songbird. Thanks to everyone helping to update this add-on!
Please update this great add-in.
Without it, the Mac version of Songbird is pretty useless IMO!
I'm off to try and downgrade my songbird back to a version this add-in works with!
For anyone else looking to downgrade in order to continue using this Add-on, here is the latest version of Songbird this works with -
http://download.songbirdnest.com/installer/macosx/i686/Songbird_1.4.3-1438_macosx-i686.dmg
Yes devs, PLEASE update this very necessary add on ! It's actually kind of silly that this functionality isn't simply working in SB by default. Thanks !
Doug
Please update the add-ons. This is missing so cruely from the latest songbird. Thanks in advance.
@parabolle > nice one!!
Give your support to this request on Get Satisfaction to see if we can get this into Songbird core. http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/add_apple_keyboard_media_key_support_to_core
any chance of an update for songbird 1.7?
Doesn't work with songbird 1.8b3.
An update would be great! Songbird is really lacking this in the newest version!
I'm out. Can't wait months for important plug-ins without developers giving any response to questions.
Sorry guys, I'm leaving over to iTunes / XBMC -combination.
Bye bye Songbird.
It's funny how apple media key support is actually integrated into the windows version. I am using Windows 7 with bootcamp on macbook and they media keys work great.
Is the source code still available for this?
The link posted above no longer works.
i got it to install by editing the install.rdf file in the xpi but it didnt work :(
THANKS THANKS THANKS!!!!! SO SO MUCH!!!!:D:D:D I really hope you keep this add-on updated^
Awesome, thanks a lot for that Nick!
Thanks a lot ! I ve been waiting for a long time ;)
Thanks for the bump, however, this update is not working for me for some reason. I tried to once again go to an old version of songbird, but my media keys still aren't working. Is anyone else having this problem?
Same here. The update is not working. I have songbird 1.8.0 right now. I tried disabling all other addons but still to no avail. I will try a completely clean reinstall right now. Is it also possible that this only works for Mac OSX 10.6? I'm still on 10.5.8. Please advise.
Also this is on the unibody macbook pro.
Thanks for updating this, Nick. This seems to work with my MBP running 10.6.5 (running in 32-bit) with Songbird 1.8.0, Build 1800 (20100830150342).

In case if MMFix doesn't work for anyone's Mac, they can also try a patch that I created to prevent iTunes from starting when you press the play/pause button. Check it out at the following URL.
Update: Upgraded to OS X 10.6 and reinstalled this addon, now it works. Thanks.
Any word if the current plugin version is compatible with the latest version of songbird (1.9.3)?
For those of you wondering how to stop iTunes from opening every time you hit play, check out the following link. It is a super simple click and go process (no need for scripting).
http://lifehacker.com/#!5651055/free-your-macs-media-keys-from-itunes-no-manual-hacking-required
Also works fine with old PS/2 multimedia keyboard, connected via USB to PS/2 adapter to a Mac Mini. Only one issue: iTunes is also opened when I press play. How can I disable this?
Ok... missed the last post.
says its not compatible with my current songbird? :( installed today on osx - any ideas?
bubbalouie
Works a treat, Thanks :)
