Filters on the side instead of above.
A media list view to move the filter panes to the left. If there is interest, I might extend it further, including customizing the number of filter panes shown, putting the filters on the right, etc. Your feedback is invited!

It is a very nice option as I prefer the vertical view, but would also like the option to have this over in the left side panel in a collapsible format.

I am not too eager to post, since I overlooked the obvious initially.. but, this is an FYI post if it is the claim I am making is feasible.
Problem: I think that this somehow clashes with the 'Now Playing" addon.
My songbird never freezes,as far as this my ol' brain can recall anyway.
However, since i have installed this addon, often times (About 15 times today already), If i go to this filter view...I can play the songs ok... but if I close songbird and it reopens in this view, it stops responding when I try to play a song.
I then have to let windows shut the program down and restart it.
At one point, I kept having to restart it because it would not play on restart, until I change the view from Vertical, then restart the program, and THEN go to the Vertical view.
SO, the only thing I did different today with songbird, other than download this addon, was to download 'now playing'.
Resolution: I removed the now playing addon, and it i s now working fine.
Keep in mind that 'NOW PLAYINg' was not in view when i was having the problems.
I do not know if it is even possible for there to be a conflict, but, I will keep this addon and leave off the now playing addon until later. So, you do not need to resolve it for me, if it is really an isolated incident.

Much nicer presentation this way. Since you asked, I would like the option to change the number of filter panes (I would like 1 filter pane and 1 media pane).

@deOmega: Moshy just released a new version of Now Playing -- maybe that will help? The code for the VF is almost identical to the horizontal panes, so if the one works, so should the other.

Thank you for the feedback, so now I will try to communicate with him.
The newest one from him is the one I was using, and just tried again... and again it froze.
I cannot tell you again just how much more friendly this is on my brain and eyes. I was just never able to get accustomed to the horizontal one... in songbird or any other player.
May I again plug for something collapsible over on the far left? :)

Screen shot posted, version bumped, enjoy. I'm giving some thought to the problem of changing the number of displayed panels.
I like this a lot more than the default top view. Is it possible to choose the number of filters yet? ie I want to get rid of the genre view.
Very nice indeed, much prefer this scheme for my long Artist and Album names as they show up completely now.
This is good for wide screens.

I don't know if you would be able to do this, but is there a way that you could make a similar view with the artist column on the left like it is now, but stack the album filter on top of the songs one? This is a mock-up of what it would look like, but just ignore the album art in it (that was just added for a GetSatisfaction idea thread). I think this set up would be useful because it would give you a really tall artist list to browse through, and use up a lot of that open space that the songs are currently just taking up. Great view already though.
td, if someone has already done an album art filter like that it's probably quite easy to do by combining bits from my media page and theirs. personally, i have enough addons to keep track of and haven't been good about updating them so i'm going to leave that for someone else...
Would there be any chance that in the filter panes, you could add the number of tracks included in each particular category in a column next to it?
eg Genre
All (16,546)
Rock (5,124)
Indie (7,855) etc etc
Also, if this is possible, the ability to sort filter panes alphabetically or by number of tracks would be great. Clearly pinching winamp ideas here, but they work quiet well.

Thanks for the addon. I am not seeing how to use it though.. unless i am missing something, I am not seeing an option to display it.
Personally though, i would LOVE this if it is doing what I am suspecting... I am anticipating it to be akin to the feature in mediamonkey to filter from the left pane.
