This rocks! I can now skip tracks without searching for the application!
Oh don't forget to Enable the remote under the Controls menu :).

Enables mac remote control support for machines that support it.
To enable control with the remote, go to "Controls->Enable Apple Remote". Same applies for when you want to turn off control with the remote.
As requested, I've added a prefpane that allows for automatic enabling of the remote control when Songbird starts.
Just look in the options/preferences window for the new option (under Mac Remote Control).

Suggestions:
1. Fast forward and rewind are missing (See VLC)
2. UI so we can change a few options:
a. Volume control (Either app or external)
b. Assign the buttons like in Hotkeys.
c. Menu button? Hmm, Maybe focus the app in Main Player Mode? Then go back to unfocus in previous mode?
awesome !
Kreeger you rock !
Thanks :)
Absolutely amazing!! Now only if you could get the Remote iPhone app to work with SongBird. lol That'd be a miracle. Still, this is an amazing thing though :D
Hi,
I am trying to install this plugin but it doesnt seem to work on my macbook.
When I enable it, the volume control also goes off. I am unable to play/pause or increase/decrease volume or do any thing after enabling the Remote Control.
Please suggest.
Regards,
Alpha0
Same issues as Alpha, even though you said you fixed it.

Fantastic, it works like a charm. Now just make rewinding and fast forward a possibility and it's brilliant! As for the Menu button, it could be worked on in due time, it's not an immediate concern. Maybe it could bring up the playlists by default? Great job, Kudos! :)
Very nice. Next/Previous, Play/Pause, volume control. It’s complete enough for me. :)
How does this work exactly. Does OS X provide a way to intercept remote control commands that would otherwise be used by the system or other applications (like Front Row). Front Row is a nuisance to me so I'm glad the Menu button doesn't call it anymore. But I liked the fact that the volume buttons would affect the main OS volume. Could this be an option? Using the volume buttons for the OS button, not the application's (songbird's) volume?
Right now the remote would work but the volume buttons would work for both Songbird volume and system volume, while the Menu button would launch Front Row. I unchecked "Enable Apple Remote" and then checked it again, and the behavior was back to normal.
Great and usable, but a little clumsy.
It seems to randomly switch between controlling system volume and sonbird volume. Sometimes both at the same time. I'd rather it control the system volume and leave songbird's volume alone.
Also think it should be "enabled" on songbird launch. I use it all the time, don't want to have to click enable every time.
Still, it gets the job done.

+1

+1 as well. Remembering the previous state of the option on Dropbox launch would be sensible. I think the Shuffle and Repeat controls work that way, for instance.
HAHA, for some random reason it ends up that Apple's BootCamp 2.0 has the Apple Remote working with Windows, and for some random reason it works with Songbird. I can pause, skip, rewind, fast forward, and set the volume. Here's something else thats amazing about it. When I change the volume the volume thing on the bottom goes up and down.
Looks like MacBook Windows users don't need this Add-on.
Ah snap sorry, Songbirds volume (can't remember the name) thing doesn't move. Its just the systems.
does not seem to work on my iMac 10.4.11
I enable the remote and it becomes useless.
When I disable it, I can use the remote again to change the system volume.
For some reason after the latest update to this add on, the "Enable Apple Remote" is not appearing in the "controls" menu for me.
I have double checked and re-installed the plug in. it is not 'disabled'
strange
This thing is the best. If only the buttons on the keyboard worked...
I just installed this, it does´nt work in songbird. But i also messed it up with all the other programs! I can´t use it now even if i uninstall it!!! How to fixs this??
Suggestion --
Make it start up when SongBird starts up.
Not sure if it was suggested already, but it's a bit of an inconvenience to have to go to "Controls > Enable Apple Remote" each time I start up the application.
Other than that, this is absolutely fantastic.
When I first tried out Songbird, I was gonna ditch it because I couldn't use my remote, but you have fixed that good sir.
Thanks for the fantastic addon.
Thank you. Just gave me the push to get rid off iTunes - and have a happy sex life ;-)
the remote works fine for me.
I am using a iMac with the new keyboard that has audio control buttons (rwd, play/pause, fwd). these keyboard buttons don't work with this extension
this further support would be a great thing! it would make me fully switch to songbird...
Thanks, this plugin is great, I made the following mod' as I like it to be on by default:
edited: chrome/mac-remote-control/content/overlay.js
// Inserted at end of file
if (gRemoteControlService.isSupported) {
// HACK: Set a timeout to enable the remote if it is supported..
setTimeout(ToggleAppleRemote(), 1200);
}
I also renamed the menu option to now be "Disable apple remote", once again, thanks for a great plugin :)
lapsaptong, there now is an extension for the multimedia keys on the newish iMac keyboard and the MacBook keyboard:
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1408
I'll test it in a few minutes, but from the comments it seems that it works fine.
I think you should eliminate the "Enable Remote" button.
I don't know if that's possible, but songbird should always enable the apple remote when it's focused and if it's not, still enable the control when no focused other player (e.g. an mplayer or vlc instance showing a film) processes the remote-signals.
right now songbird "captures" the apple remote and no other player can use it. I keep songbird running in the background, even when I'm not listening to music (startup time :/ ), and use some videoplayer in the same time.
the only problem which arises is that itunes does exactly this: it get's apple remote-input when no other player, like mplayer is running in foreground. is this hardcoded or can this itunes behaviour be copied?
Yes. This doesn't work at all for me. imac, 24". 10.4.11. 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Doesn't work at all... not even after updating Songbird to version 1 and updating this extension/add-on to the latest version. I can enable/disable, restart songbird till the sun goes down (which it has) and it simply doesn't work.
Doesn't work here either.
Same as johnpfannkuchen, but MacBookPro,
running Leopard last version.
ditto renatomac. doesnt work on macbook pro running 10.4.11.
It's really good, thanks
This addon works fully in my Mac Mini :D
Didn't get the "Enable ..." under Controls first, tried disabling all other add-ons and by turning on one by one I found that "Now Playing List 0.6.3" ( http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/96 ) was causing issue. It's not working for SB 1.0 so disabled right now.
All sweet now =)
My suggestions:
-Option to choose between OS X or Songbird volume control.
-Rewind and FF (as mentioned above)
-Customisable Menu button, like switch to Songbird or brew me another coffee...
-Perhaps merge with Apple Keyboard Media Key Support? One app to rule them all... Heard it's a really nifty author of that app too!! ;)
Where would I find the source code for this? (I'm wondering how to listen to the remote since I use emms instead of Songbird.)
hey, its working at mine, dont know why... i got macbook, with osx 10.4... the check to enable is there but when its checked its still not working... songbird doesn't do anything when i use the remote...
aha... of course its NOT working...
Hi there, what do you think about an option to set "Enable Apple Remote" always on when the program starts? It's a cool addon but can be annoying to have to set it all the time.
Cheers!
I agree with drleper. Please add an option to have it enabled by default. I use this addon all the time!
it does not seem to be working for me, the same for the keyboard one:(
i just saw the enable bit!
sorry!
Superb! Thank you.
Doesn't seem to work for me either... Mac Mini running OS X 10.4.11
great plugin, but I still prefer to control the system volume all the time, instead of the songbird volume. It will blast me away if an email arrives otherwise :P
And I can't find any option to automatically start the plugin with songbird. I guess it would be the preferences-button in the plugins-window, but it's greyed out.
it stays enabled anyway, so don't bother...
Works great with 1.2b1! Really nice add-on.
Hi,
No joy for me with the remote :-(
Am running 10.4.11 (Tiger) on a Macbook
Audio quality is super from this app, shame I can't get the apple remote to work...
Have tried disabling all other add-ons, makes no diff
Tried re-installing the add-on, made no diff
Anyone any clues/ideas? I really want this to work - would mean that I can kick iTunes into touch...
Fantastic, thanks very much Nick!
So this extension lets me control songibrd with the apple remote on my ipod touch even if i have a windows computer right?
Doesn't seem to work. (Running OS X 10.4.11 on a macbook)
When enabled, it stops other apps responding to the remote, but songbird doesn't respond either. I hope it can be fixed, as I prefer most of songbird's functionality to iTunes, but miss being able to use my remote.
please update this to support the latest 1.3.0 beta :)
Doesn't work for me either (OS X 10.4.11 Macbook).. =(
Actually, for me no remote support is the only reason for using iTunes over Songbird at this point. Would be great if this could work on Tiger!
Doesn't work for me (((( OS X 10.6.2 Songbird 1.2.0
Please fix!!!
wont work on snow leopard (10.6.2) and Songbird 1.2.0, Build 1146
u can still change system volume but sometimes nothing will happen unless u disable the songbirds mac remote support
plz fix it :-)
If you guys wanna use this addon on Songbird up to 1.4.3, download this updated version of the plugin:
http://www.goikoetxeta.com/wp-content/uploads/mac-remote-control.xpi
And install the candelair driver for the apple remote:
thx...it works now :)
I agree, works for me:
Songbird 1.4.3
OS X 1.5.8
It doesn't work with Songbird 1.4.3 and Snow Leopard 10.6.2.
Doesn't work for me either.
Songbird 1.4.3
Snow Leopard 10.6.2
Unfortunately I can´t download the apple remote control add-on. Can anybody help? :)
>>It doesn't work with Songbird 1.4.3 and Snow Leopard 10.6.2.
After enabling "Lecacy Compatibility Mode" in Candelairs prefs, it is working again.
