AWESOME !
Nice work Epskampie ;)
+600 downloads and no thanks from anyone !!!
Keep on good work :)

Have you spent a lot of time organizing your music directory,
but are the id3 tags not all correct?
Do you have a lot of singles, or selfmade compilations?
Tired of the music library?
This add-on is meant for you.
Directory browser allows you to directly view the contents of one
or more of your local folders, without using the music library.
Usage:
Install add-on
Press ‘manage directories’ and add one or more of your
music folders.
Create and/or select a playlist
Drag one or more items from the directory browser to the playlist
to add them. The items will be scanned, so the first time it can
take a while.
Please let me know how you feel about it, and any bugs you run
into.
Updated for new songbird version. Now it will keep working until version 2 is released.
Hopefully the API's won't change in the meantime ;)
AWESOME !
Nice work Epskampie ;)
+600 downloads and no thanks from anyone !!!
Keep on good work :)
suggestion : it would be great to play audio just by double-click on the file ;)
Thanks ;) Another thing : iconURL :p
Thanks a lot!
I think, your add-on will be much better when sorting by name/date
is available.
P.S. It is my first attempt to use Songbird. I like it. Since today
I shall use it instead of my current music player. ;-)
Thanks for this Epskampie!
An addition that I think would improve the user experience in
general is make it into a column view like in OS
X. This layout makes great sense in the horizontal
layout.
The first column can be all the directory’s you have added,
then clicking once on a folder opens the folder on the right, and
so on.
Integration with the ‘Now playing’ plugin would be
great also with a ‘queue this’ button.
Hi,
great add-on. Thanks!
Being able to browse and play music outside of the library is a
feature I use a lot, but haven’t yet seen well implemented in
many Linux based browsers (I use Linux). MediaMonkey on Windows
does this great. Have a look at it for some ideas.
For example, in MediaMonkey one can both browse the Library by
Location, and also, browse and play medai in any folder on the
disk.
Keep up the good work!
I think I found a bug. When I drag and drop a single or multiple audio files from the directroy browser into a playlist everything is fine, but if I drag and drop a directory contatining audio files, each audio file ends up with two entries in the playlist. Hope this helps.
love your work!
Ah, a handy tool.
Without this add-on, i had always a bunch of windows open to search
for my music.
I just found a little bug:
adding a directory by the use of Tools>Add-on…
doesn’t work. The directory is saved, but the content of the
directory is not shown in the list.
When you then push “Manage directories” and than push
Ok, the content is shown.
Hopefully this helps you to further develop this Add-on.
I have Songbird installed on C Drive, audio files on D drive.
directory browser doesn't seem to want to cooperate with my D drive (doesn't display any files at all).
ah, apologies, it wasn't accessing the different drive that was the problem, it was accessing a folder that starts with a # character ( D:\# MP3s\ )
nice add on. cheers.
Excellent addition to Songbird.
Works without a glitch. When I move a group of music files to the "Now Playing" area, it is included with the other files already there. Is there a way of just playing the ones I just selected?
it is impossible to install in songbird 0.7.0rc1 )-:
"directory browser 0.5.0 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Songbird 0.7.0rc1"
wow this add-on Rocks.. I have used most of Windows and Linux Players but this function makes everything very simple.. Thanks..
Hi Epskampie
I already installed the Directory Browser. But, it doesn't works. :-( It is really sad because I want this function, I hate libraries.
I have to say that at the beginning my Songbird 6.0 was in spanish. I uninstalled and now I have it in english, but is the same, when I choose Manage directories, the program freeze.
Some ideas? please, help!
It'd be cool if the tracks can be run directly from the directory browser pane (without having to create a playlist). Otherwise great add-on.
hey, this is a great idea but the install button is greyed out. i can't install. what's wrong?? please help!
sorry to double post- eskampie, are you planning on updating? thanks!
would be great if somebody update compatibility for 0.7, i hate playlists too..
TREE VIEW FTW!!!!
yes, update ! :-)
T_T
when I fond this Add... don't work in a new version...
that's a really nice plug-in!
i will bake soon
:D
"It'd be cool if the tracks can be run directly from the directory browser pane (without having to create a playlist). Otherwise great add-on."
That Would be the best!!!
this is the best add-on ever, libraries are hell...
but no double click is a real anti climax :(
Wow !
I just discovered this add-on !
Amazing, Thanks :)
i cant really get this to do anything.
i click 'manage directories' and add a directory.
it is added to the list but then i cant do anything else and have to force quit songbird.
i really want this application, any help?
noooo!!!!
Epskampie said: "I do not plan to work on directory browser in the near future." )))))-:
I noticed that is it impossible to re dimension the size of the directory windows /-:
@ anoceandude: in the last version of Songbird (win xp), all goes correctly
Library pane is more than enough without cluttering it up with unnecessary add-ons.
I love this addon! especially because i hate the library filter!
One thing i would like to see is actions when double click and middle click:
Example:
double click: create new playlist with files in it
middle click: add to current playlist.
That way songird would have the same features as foobar plus all the addons.
This plugin is essential for all people trying to come from foobar.
Thanks!!!
Songbird could be grate if you menage to make this plugin work like Media Monkey.
I relly hate playlist and winamp type of players in witch you have to import music in palylist.
Any idea when this will be able for version 1.0 rc3 or later?
you can release sources ??
That plugin is one of the best plugins for Songbird!
Good work!!
Is it possible to sort the folders by date? I miss this feature.
And of course double-clicking
Thanks for updating! Yours is one of the "must have" add-ons. Great!!
A question for those who have used it. When you play a file that is not currently in your library, does it automatically add it to the library? I actually don't want it to do that, so if it does, could you make a setting so you can tell it whether to add a song to the media library when it is played?
exactly what I was looking for! songbird just might get some more attention that mediamonkey on my comp now!
hi. thank you for that addon, but it freezes on my machine (OS X 10.4.11, intel) when i want to add a folder. therefore it is unusable to me.
In OS X 10.5.5, I need to force quit Songbird after trying to import a folder.
Really wish this would work though.
just found out that if you go through the add on settings directly, then it works...
but freezes when importing a folder through the side pane where it resides.
thanks adamrw, also works with 10.4.11
Hi,
i have a (minor, but weird) bug. Some folders are not quiet in order. My folder list ends with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Zombie Nation (which is correct A..Z) but then i have different folders starting with all kind of letters.
And i would like to request a feature to sort folders by date.
Thanks, great add on!
I can't figure this out... This is how far I get:
http://www.sendthemtomir.com/images/songbird.jpg
I have no clue what to do once I add the directory. I am unable to drag and drop it. The directory has a over a TB of music but it doesn't look like it's doing anything and I don't see any additional network traffic.
Ok, there are two different directory browser windows. One is to config the path (located under add-ons), and the other to show the files. The interface on Songbird seems to have potential but right now is a huge cluster#%$&.
I do not see "Manage directories" anywhere. No directories show up anywhere. Have added a directory and that seems to save but nothing else happens.
Am I missing something obvious? A Directories button would be nice to load them.
This is a very nice power tool! Thank you!
I have one request, very important to me: The ability to drop INTO a directory. Thus being able to copy all the tracks in a playlist to a single folder for export. That would solve a huge problem for me!
Thanks for the add-on. It would be much more useful if there were some kind of context menu on the pane – to play songs from the directory (without adding them to the library), edit metadata, open file location, etc.
This extension makes songbird. I'm sure there are ways to improve it, but I cannot convey how nice it is to have a directory view in Songbird. Otherwise I'd be stuck using foobar2000 under Wine. Thank you.
From Get Satisfaction: http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/skip_function_in_directory_browser?topic_tools=open
skip function in directory browser
When I use the directory browser and skip to the next song, instead of the next song in the directory some other song (randomly?) out of the Mediathek is being played, but not the next one in the directory.
ok, I found out a bit more about the above comment which Laura pasted for me:
When I drag & drop an entire folder onto the player, then he is playing one song after another of this directory. When I drag a single song onto the player, this song is being played and then the player stops. When I skip while a song out of the directory browser is being played, the player jumps into the media library and plays songs from there, depending upon the media librarys sort order. Double-klicking in the directory browser doesn't play the song.
I guess the player should not jump out of the directory into the media library when skipping (just go on down the directory tree instead) and I also think one would be able to play a song when double-klicking onto it in the directory browser. Apart from this: nice add-on.
nanbil I'm in the same boat as you. I installed the extension and added a few directories however I don't see a Manage directories option anywhere in Songbird.
thank you for your add-on. i use it a lot! suggestion : if the browser could include columns such as date modified/created so i can arrange my folders from old to new by one click. it will really help folks with huge libraries! thanks
nice app!
Is there a trick to let the directories synchronized? It means, when you add a mp3 in a dir, it appears in the library ... ?
thanks!
ok forget my comment, it's a app feature, not a plugin feature ;)
I downloaded this and it doesn't work. Either that or I'm not using it right. I've Songbirg 1.0.0 Build 860. I really wanted this feature.
sorry...forget my comment...got it to work...my bad
I love this add-on, it's the iTunes killer for me. Please please please update it for Songbird 1.1!
Great add-on! Without it, I would not use Songbird. I hate the media library :P
Please, upgrade it for 1.1! Don't want to start using another media player! =(
for me an killer-feature!! please UPDATE for songbird 1.1 and please add a function to play songs directly...after playing these "directly clicked" song it would be nice when the next audio-file in this directory will be played (like foobar's folder view). it's not very usable to add the songs to a playlist first.
nice add-on!. Are you thinking in do a new version for songbird 1.1?.
Thanks!!!
I second the last comments. PLEASE upgrade for 1.1.
Your add-on totally rocks, and without it songbird loses 50% value.
please, please, please upgrade for 1.1!!!!!!!
This is not compatiblile with 1.1.1? :/
Why the directory browser is not included in the installation of songbird? this is the best, the best browser there is. thanks
I concur! Directory based browsing would be a great addition to the standard installation of this great player. Until then the add-on upgrade for 1.1 would be great. Keep up the good work Epskampie!
I downgraded to 1.0 to keep using this add on.
I used 1by1 on XP which is Directory based and loved it. It's a shame that 1.1 is not supported with this, hopefully this will be updated soon as I am not a big fan of list or filter based browsing.
For the 1.1 users who want to get the 0.5.2 Version working before Epskampie brings out a new official update, there is a little workaround.
- Download the .xpi File to your computer - do not install it
- Open it with some Archive Manager (e.g. File Roller in Ubuntu) - do not extract it ;)
- edit the install.rdf
- Change line 26 from "<em:maxversion>1.0.*</em:maxversion>" to "<em:maxversion>1.1.*</em:maxversion>" or higher its up to you ;) and save it.
- Install the .xpi file to your Songbird
- Restart Songbird and check that the Addon is active
- Right click on the open button for the right menue and acitvate the "directory browser" if it isn't active.
It worked for me so long without problems but i cant guaranty that there will be no bugs ;)
thanks!, it's works perfectly until now
Epskampie, this is an excellent extension! It is a must have for me. It still works great in current versions of Songbird.
I read above you no longer use Songbird. Not surprising then that you haven't updated this extension, it's hard to be passionate about something you don't use. Songbird has improved a lot though, and if you ever come back, I look forward to the improvements discussed earlier.
Please, make it for last 1.1.1 version!!
Update please!
yes please update!!!!!
One reason to change to songbird was this plugin.
If Epskampie would mamage to publish a new version, this could makes my life much easier.
So thanks in advance from somebody who is not able to write addons.
sorkin
It's very necessary add-on. I like it.
excellent add on, the best one i've used so far. i would love to see a search function within, that would make it even better...
Hi, thanks for addon. It`s great ! Do you think it`s possible to add a feature - which will automatically (on double click on folder) add its contents to playlist and start playing ? that would be more efortless and awesome !
Sorry, I didn`t saw your response to comment above. Thanks for working on this addon !!!
dont know when you will be back again, but i was wondering if it is possible at all to put in an option to have this open some files like explorer would, with the default applications...
if it could do that i wouldnt even use anything else in windows anymore, because i would just have my two video directories up (i have two seperate 1TB drives, one for movies and one for shows). i think i would just have songbird run at startup, fullscreen with the taskbar hidden, making the perfect media computer :)
unless anyone can tell me a way to get songbird to play videos...
Is it possible to choose which pane this is displayed in? I would love to have it in the Bottom Service Pane so I can have the now playing playlist in the right pane, just like Amarok.
This may be too much to ask from this app and actually a suggestion for a new one, BUT: the ability to change the name of a file/folder from within Songbird and not have to reload said file/folder in order to still play it would be heavenly.
Hallo Epskampie,
Using your addon I have a suggestion:
I saved a cover.jpg in each directory. It would be very niche to see this picture in your directory browser. It will help to find the correct directory. There for it will be necessary to open all second level driectories with one click, cause if I saved all albums of an artist in the directory called "Artist-Name", the covers were saved as "Artist-Name\Album XY\album xy cover.jpg"
Do you think this could be established in your program? I have no idea of programming, so I have to hope, you will find a way...
Thanks
echterhoerer
this is exactly I have looked for to change to songbird
THX !
browse file and play by double click would be great
foobar users will love this. thats the default setting...(to have the folder view open.)
Hi,
sorry i don't understand one thing!
when i am in the directory browser,
if i click on the mp3 file it don"t play?
This plugin is just to make playlist?
Thank a lot
( i am french so my english...)
Hello, I stumbled on an issue.
The Songbird index file and the file location properties looks like file:///path/blah/blah
But in case you will enqueue songs using dir browser it will create duplicates with path like file:////path/blah/blah
So it uses four slashes instead of three. (As I use this plugin primarily to tidy up my collection, this bug is really annoying).
Very good, I really needed that one ! The hell with media libraries ! Thanks for this good piece of work...
I can't wait for the the add-on to handle double-clicking (don't forget to let us choose between play now and enqueue, enqueue being the most useful IMHO).
Keep it up !
author, please, i beg u, add possibility to "double-clicking and playing". pleeeeease.
Hello,
thanks for this awesome plugin. I'm new to songbird and without this plugin songbird isn't usable for me.
I also have a tip. It would be great when a double click on a song in the directory browser would add this song to the playlist. Maybe it would be a nice feature for future releases.
Best regards
Hi, this add-on is very good. However I have some small problem with it. I am using Songbird on Mac and I have local network with this Mac and one PC. I am able to open the shared musing on the PC and it is working very good with the player. Anyway, this Mac is laptop and I am traveling sometimes and of course disconnecting from the LAN. So when I plug in the cable and the network is working again, I start the Songbird and it says that it is not able to detect the directory on the PC. I go to the Manage directories, delete the shared one and find it again and it is working again. And I have to do this every time I reconnect to the network. It is annoying as my default music is on this PC... Can you advise something, I hope explained everything with enough details? Thank you in advance.
Great plugin, Epskampie!
sisken noticed a bug last month that seems only partially fixed.
When you add files whose path contains a bang ('!'), a duplicate entry is added to the database.
I.e., suppose you play a song by the band "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!".
The original database entry uses this path:
file:///c:/audio/Clap%20Your%20Hands%20Say%20Yeah!/...
But directory browser encodes the '!', so a duplicate-ish entry is added pointing to the same media:
file:///c:/audio/Clap%20Your%20Hands%20Say%20Yeah%21/...
Without the '!', I don't see duplicate entries being added.
Thanks again for your great work!
Hi. This is gread add-on, but there is one thing i miss - it would be usable if i can reload my music directory - when i add some music in this directory, i gotta restart my Songbird, or at least change to another add-on and back. Thanx a lot.
Hi, the addon is great, but I can confirm the annoying bug described by sisken last month ("in case you will enqueue songs using dir browser it will create duplicates with path like file:////path/blah/blah").
It seems that the bug affects unix/linux systems only (paths on unix filesystem look like /path/blah/blah), as bongsird in his comment says that the addon works fine with windows paths like file:///c:/path/blah/blah. I run Directory Browser 0.5.3 with Songbird 1.2.0 on Ubuntu linux.
I hope this bug will be fixed and thanks a lot for your work!
Hi,
It would be really awesome to play songs by just double-clicking it...
And it would just be divine if it adds it automatically into the current playlist.
Thank you for this awesome add-on.
Awesome! I was going to actually create my own plugin to do just this. Thanks for saving me the time and energy!
Hey, this is great. And yes it would be great to add double click function and setting to set visibility panels with directories. Sometimes I dont need to have all panles visible :-)
very useful -
thx!
:)
Hi, i am new to songbird and am having problems selecting a directory. I have installed on my MacBook, Songbird 1.2.0, Build 1146, and the Directory Browser Add-On.
I click Manage Directories and a new window pops up where i browse for the intended folder. After i choose said folder, the window locks up and nothing happens. The only way out is to force quit Songbird all together.
Does anyone know a way around this? Am i missing something? Any help would be great seeing as this is the main reason i would like to use songbird. Itunes is nothing but a headache.
Thanks!
Very nice! It works together with the "now playing" plugin too. Just drag & drop.
Right click (add to library, add to current playlist, add to now playing) and double click would make a great adjustment. But for now it is working fine for me on ubuntu.
thanks for making this !!!
Bug for you!
When a folder in a directory contains a period or similar punctuation it is put out of alphabetical order - moving it to the bottom of the directory browser inside Songbird. It has no effect on the actual directory. No problem noticed in the library so far!
Great add-on, Epskampie! Thank you.
Win 7 Ultimate, Build 7100
Songbird 1.2.0, Build 1146
Directory Browser 0.5.3
DUDE! This add-on is what I have been looking for! Works perfectly. I'm a DJ with tunes that I have catorgorised into genre/sub genre - it took ages. Your hard work on this has really helped me out. Cheers geezer
Pretty good work, thanks for the wonderful addition, it reminds me of my beloved foobar2000, I will follow the evolution of this add-on with interest =)
Thanks again, also for the hard work =)
Just switch to Ubuntu 9.04 a few days ago and still figuring out which media player/organiser to use as I came from MediaMonkey. This seems to be a perfect solution while the guys at MM still trying to figure out how to implement MM in Linux.
Anyway I install this add-on but sadly this doesnt seem to work for me. Maybe I don't get the hang of it but I just can't find the Directory pane or anything in that line at all.
I'm having the same problem as butterbrett. I'm using a Mac with OS X 10.6 and also using Songbird 1.2.0, Build 1146 (20090616030100)
Add a directory via "Managae Driectories" and the window won't close -- can't do anything but force quit songbird...
I too can't use this extension. Same problem as butterbrett and climbd.
Same version as climbd's.
Mac OS X 10.5.8, Macbook (White), Intel Core Duo 2GHz, 2 GB RAM...
Oh, the directory I tried to add was on an external HD, don't know if it may have sth to do with the problem.
Why isn't something like this integrated into Songbird now? This is my #1 desired feature and the author says he's no longer supporting this add-on! Double click to play would be nice but not a deal breaker... Come on Devs, 96,000+ downloads can't be wrong!
WOOP! I was ecstatic to find this add-on - and - then equally as sad to find out that the author doesn't support it anymore.
Yep Oktybar - they REALLY need to integrate this app into the player directly!!!!
Of all the add-ons out there its probably the simplest to do - but then I'm not a developer so we'll just have to wait for the powers that be to catch up. ZZZZZZzzzzzzz!
PS: Well done and thank you to the author for creating it!
this is the feature i miss the most in songbird, so i'd be extremely grateful and happy if someone with the skills would update it to be compatible with the latest version of songbird.
Absolutely awesome add-on. This literally made Songbird usable for me; I hate the default way Songbird manages music, like iTunes. Some of us like our directories!
Keep up the good work!
I had the same problem as butterbrett and climbd, it froze up after selecting a location.
I had to force quit Songbird, got it started again and added the folder through the preferences in the add-ons box and then got the same problem as nanbil and letsgoflyers81, there is no 'Manage Directories'. It was there when i first installed it but after the freeze and restart it has disappeared.
Please help as I have searched for a long time for a music management system for my Mac to no avail!
Thanks.
Hey, how about making added directories available in the left sidebar? Would be very nice to be able to browse through a dropdown tree of subfolders, doubleclick on a folder an have its contents displayed :)
Epskampie
Have you spent a lot of time organizing your music directory, but are the id3 tags not in order?Do you have a lot of singles, or selfmade compilations?
Tired of the music library?
This add-on is meant for you.
Directory browser allows you to directly view the contents of one or more of your local folders, without using the music library.
