Amen !!

Play your iPod from Songbird and synchronize it with your Songbird library using the iPod device Songbird extension. This extension will mount your iPod in Songbird, allowing you to play songs from your iPod library and playlists. This extension also allows you to copy songs to your iPod or synchronize your iPod from your Songbird library.
Update for the Songbird 1.3.0b1 release.
Amen !!
i have not used songbird ... yet, but i am definately planning on using it as my sole media player now that i will no longer need iTunes. I do have one question though; if my iPod softwear needs to get updated, will songbird prompt for an update to be downloaded, as iTunes would? I am running XP Pro, and will be running Vista Ultimate, well, atleast once they release SP1.
No, Songbird currently will not. I'm not sure if Apple even makes that possible.
Does/Will Songbird support other DAPs besides the iPod?
Yes, the 0.2.5 release will have support for generic USB players.
Does the addon sync playcount info from my iPOD? I'd love to be rid of iTUNES, but not unless I can build a smart playlist to manage my podcasts and to do that effectively the playcount information is really important. I'll keep watching and hoping. Thanks.
This appears to be duplicating files to the library. This means it takes up double the disc space!!! Am I wrong or not? Has anyone else noticed this? I am sick of iTunes and want to use only Songbird but can't afford the wasted disc space.
Currently, it does not, but it can be added in the future.
It shouldn't duplicate files. Do you have iTunes and Songbird open at the same time? They can conflict with each other if so. Try restoring your iPod to factory defaults. When iTunes pops up, set the iPod to disk mode and disable auto launch of iTunes. Then launch and use Songbird and see if you still get duplicates. Unfortunately, there's not a good way for Songbird to prevent iTunes from auto-launching for new (or restored) iPods.
Any Chance we can get this plugin for vista as I HATE REALLY &@$^@ HATE itunes. Please.....
I take it you tried it on Vista and it failed. Bummer. Looks like I'll have to purchase it.
Hi, god songbird is sooooo much better than Itunes! Just one thing i noticed though, unless im being an idiot (which is highly likely!) is that i like to put the album artwork on my ipod and cant seem to do it with songbird! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
That will be supported in a future release.
does not seems to work with my ipod shuffle (the old white one) with suse 10.2 and songbird 0.2. the device is not recognized in songbird. but i can access the ipod in the system.
I've just uploaded version 1.0.0. It has a fix for some Linux systems. Give it a try.
I use the Songbird 0.25 and copy song to my ipod shuffle. After it complete porting the song, I detach the ipod and try to play it, only the first 6 songs out of 126 songs can be played (Although songbird still list that I port all 126 songs in there). Wonder if anyone has the same issue (because I don't see any of you mentioning this problem) I am using Windows XP. Any response will be appreciated, thanks!
Were all the songs in the same format? What format were they (MP3)?
When ever i try to download this file, it says it is not supported by Firefox... any of you guys know whats up?
they are all in MP3 formats. I notice that after I plug my iPod Shuffle in, the playlist in the iPod is kind of weird. It list the first 6 tracks continuously, and then track 7 and 8 are blank, and then track 9 till 13 are listed continuously. I tried and deleted the blank tracks, and make it "looks" like they are listed continuously. I took the iPod out and listen, it has the same problem. I plug it back in and the playlist generated the gaps again. But anyway, thanks for your quick reply, Anymore help will be appreciated.
Try downloading it from within Songbird.
Do you use firefox to download this? Because you shouldn't download this file through firefox. You should download the file through Songbird. Or If you still want to download it using firefox and install it in songbird, right-click the download button and save the link (file) in your computer. And then open songbird and browse for that file in your computer. left-click the download button in firefox will only directly install the extension. So if the extension is not for firefox, it will generate error.
Oops... I think my comment above is not right either (i should have test it before I post my comment ... sorry) So apparently firefox should ask you to open or save the file when you left-click it. You should choose "save" and save it to your computer. And then use Songbird to open that extension. Or if you choose "open", you should click "browse" button and choose Songbird to open the extension, not Firefox. Hope that help, and sorry for my misleading comment above.
When I plug in my ipod, Songbird finds it and mounts the almost 4000 songs to its library. It then tells me my ipod is linked to another library and asks if I'd like to link it to the Songbird library which would mean all my existing songs and playlists would be deleted in the process. I choose "no" because I don't want that to happen yet. I'd like to see what the program is capable of before I give up on my current program - Anapod Explorer. At this point my ipod appears in the left menu like it should. When I click on it however, it only shows 449 songs that are available. It does however say I'm using 27gb of my 27.8gb at the bottom. What happened to the other 3500 songs? Also, when I go to my normal library, and click on a song that I'd like to upload to my ipod, the option is grayed out and I'm unable to transfer any songs to the ipod. Is this just because I haven't synced the library? It'd be nice to not have to do that, at least if all you wanted to do was transfer a few songs to your ipod or to your computer without dumping everything off your ipod first.
I'm not sure what's up with the missing songs. Are they DRM'd? You can use drag and drop to copy songs from your library to your iPod.
First off this extension - Amazing work! I have a nano that I just set up to work with songbird works great except one bug, then protected songs i transfered seem to be corrupte ie you can select them on ipod but they dont play they just skip to the next song, mp3's work fine and I can be happy with just those, but just wanted to ask if anyone else runs into this problem, I am one of the few running the OSX build so may be a problem on my side but any response would be appreciated -thanks
Is it possible to cache the ipod library so that the whole thing doesn't have to be reloaded every time SongBird starts? xulrunner.exe (on Windows, at least) starts housing the CPU and the fans in my computer start going full blast, which makes it sound like an aircraft carrier. I don't mean to spark any kind of conflict here, but I know Amarok does this, though admittedly I know nothing about libgpod.
My iPod video (5th gen) is not recognized by songbird. I am using 32-bit OpenSuSE 10.2 with Songbird 0.2.5 Songbird iPod Device Support 1.0.0 version of the add-on.
Is any text displayed when you open the iPod preference pane?
I want an alternative to Itunes and so far I really like Songbird's features, so I downloaded the Ipod sync ext. I'm using Windows XP. (Sorry, I haven't switched to Linux yet, but I've been looking at different distros). All my songs copied fine, but when I try to hold down "play" on my Video Ipod to shut down nothing happens when I'm in the middle of a song. Only when a playlist is finished and the screen goes back to Ipod menus does the off feature work. The same goes for holding down "Menu" to try and reset the Ipod. Can anyone help or is this perhaps a bug that needs to be worked out? Also, should I still be able to see the Ipod in Itunes and use it to sync video? I would like to buy your product. Do you know when the full official version of Songbird is to be released? I appreciate anything you have to offer.
The songs aren't DRM'd, just regular mp3's. Also to note, when I unplugged my ipod and turned it back on, only one song was listed on the ipod. I freaked out a little bit, but reconnected my ipod to find the same 449 songs listed in Songbird. I then closed out of Songbird and opened Anapod Explorer and all my songs were found. When I disconnected the ipod this time, all the songs were available to play on the ipod again. I have not had a chance to reconnect the ipod to Songbird since, but will once I get a free second. I'm not complaining by any means, this program looks great, just trying to help out with the bugs.
I'll look into this. I fixed a bug like this for the Nano. You should still be able to use your iPod with iTunes.
Tells me no iPod device is connected. I can access the iPod through the linux file manager, though.
Getting exactly the same behaviour with fedora core 5 (x86_64)... the ipod comes up when i plug it is opened by the gnome under /media/disk-1. But songbird doesnt seem to be able to see it and the preferences tab says "no ipod devices present"
Same thing happens to me on Windows, I plug my iPod in it says mounting ipod 0% then it's not detected even though I can see it mounted in windows... It's a 3rd gen firewire iPod with itunes not installed if that helps.
Hmm i got it to finally detect the iPod then XUL runner crashed nice :(.
I've had a similar problem, namely only a few of the tracks on the iPod Shuffle playing. But they were listed correctly within Songbird; no blank tracks as you (liuzh) report.
I didn't have the time to check thoroughly, but it was my impression that only the songs within one of the iPod_ControlMusic subfolders were played. At the time my Shuffle had 7 of those subfolders.
Before trying Songbird I was using the foo_pod plugin for foobar. What resolved the problem for me was: with foo_pod I chose the option 'delete all songs and playlists' from the iPod. I was left with the 7 empty music subfolders and one other file, the name of which I can't remember - 'iPodprefs'/'iTunesprefs', perhaps?
Back in Songbird, when tranferring songs onto the iPod, a lot of new folders and files were created. There are now 20 music subfolders. Also a calendar and contacts folder, which I deleted... are those standard folders on other iPod models? Within the folder iPod_control are, besides the Music folder, an iTunes folder (that contains the playlist, db, prefs, etc.) and an empty Device folder. Now all mp3 songs play.
A new problem is that the m4a files aren't playing. They show up on the playlist within Songbird and are definitely on the iPod. But they don't play. Why does everyone hate iTunes? I see nothing wrong with it aside that it could use a few fixes, the only issue I am having is that not all podcast go into the podcast folder some go into the music folder and not all videos go in their appropriate folder but thats just a matter of fixing headers with in the files or iTunes allowing you to move it their.. So far I like it better than any other Music library software I have used...I love the way I can scroll through my library by looking at the album covers and not just a list, although I wish my iPod would do that too, but in time I am sure it will be added. Songbird can't even handle all the features of iTunes so their is not even any competition.. But however Songbird does have allot of features and addons that no other player contains...
I have a question: If I connect my ipod to my computer, will the music from my ipod be trasferred into songbird? (I don't have itunes on my computer and I'm running Vista Home Premium) I have this fear that I'm going to lose all of my music off of my ipod if I try it.
I have the exact same problem under Gentoo 64-bit. How is it detecting the iPod under linux?
Can't see my Ipod. Windows XP SP2 ... Songbird 0.2.5 Ipod Device SUpport 1.0.1 The Ipod itsel is ancient : first 20GB for windows. Itunes is *not* installed. The Ipod properly mounts as a drive and is accessible (read/write) from windows explorer. When I launch Songbird, and the Ipod is plugged in, I get a message : "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into the drive". The Ipod might be showing up under the USB devices tab as "STORAGE DEVICE (generic)". But it would not let me specify a directory to download music to. Is my my Ipod too old to be supported ?
In order to detect connected iPods, the extension reads the /etc/mtab. If you do not have sufficient access privileges, the iPod extension may not be able to read the file.
No, the extension does not yet support copying from the iPod into Songbird.
Do you know if you will also make support for iTunes phones like the Motorola SLVR?
I'd like it to support the iTunes phones, including the iPhone, but I don't have any to test with. Has anyone tried the SLVR with my extension?
Just grabbed the 0.2.5.1 linux i686 build of songbird, and I have the 1.0.1 version of the ipod plugin. I plugged in my nano in and, although it is mounted, songbird doesn't see it. The nano is shown in /etc/mtab. Here is the line: /dev/sdb2 /media/IPOD vfat rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,shortname=winnt,uid=33525 0 0 I do have permission on all the files under there.
Working brilliantly on my friend's iPod 5g. Well done.
I installed Songbird on Linux yesterday. Updating the library of my iPod video G5 took me about two hours. It did the following: copied all my music to the iPod That works, but what it also did was copying all my music to the video section and putting some videos into the music section. I don't know, what it does with podcasts and other media, like ogg files, which were also put on the iPod, but it can't play them ! In any case: I like Songbird and started using my iPod again...
Yeah, I need to do some more work with the video iPod support.
I'm curious. If I use this on my 5g 80gb ipod will the music still play as gapless or will I lose this feature? Rochey
If you can find some way of getting the podcasts to be placed correctly, I will start using Songbird in a heartbeat :D
The library the extension depends upon, libgpod, does not yet support gapless playback. However, the developers of that library are working on it.
I can't really tell from looking at the code, but I do know I have sufficient access privileges, and I have a custom udev rule that creates the device at /dev/ipod.
I notice that the directions state:
To copy songs to iPod: Drag and drop tracks from your Songbird library to the iPod device playlist in the service panel on the left hand side of the application. To synchronize: Open the iPod preferences pane using the File>Preferences menu. Select "Automatically update all songs and playlists."I also notice that, unlike iTunes, Songbird does not have checkboxes next to the tracks. Is there any way to selectively choose what tracks we want to go to our iPods without dragging/dropping? This process is lengthy enough for those of us with large libraries. I would like to suggest an option to:
Automatically update:[ ] All Tracks [x] Checkmarked tracks [x] All tracks in the following Playlists:[x] Playlist 1 [ ] Playlist 2 [x] Playlist 3
My ipod is still unrecognized. I have removed the itunes infection, all registry entries from apple, etc. "No ipod devices present" What can I do? I don't want to use itunes ever again, even though it can actually rip my CDs and it has better organizing functions still. I have un and re installed songbird and the extension. my ipod is a 3rd generation How can I check that windows knows it is there? Thanks
Eventually, I want to add that, but it requires some UI support from Songbird itself.
Does the iPod show up in Windows with a drive letter? If not, you may need to set the iPod to disk mode using iTunes.
Is itunes the only way to do this? If I add songs while in disk mode, will they be playable by the ipod? I will give it a try, thanks for the response.
Unfortunately, itunes crashes whenever I try to launch it. I've tried reinstalling. I found instructions on switching to disk-mode holding the front-panel buttons. This works but once I'm in disk mode the ipod is frozen. So now my ipod says "Disk mode" "OK to disconnect" but won't respond to anything except a reset which undoes the disk mode setting. Going back to disk mode bring the same freeze-up. I've googled but everyone simply refers back to apples "reset it" page. I know this is not ipod support but has anyone experience the like? Any suggestions?
Thanks Eric for your replies. It turns out that, even though my ipod is designed for 1394 and can only charge through a firewire port, I can only have it recognized through USB. (only a 1394 cable was included with the ipod) Thanks apple.
I have a question that was asked above but never answered... When I connect my ipod (5th gen), songbird recognizes it and mounts everything. I then dragged and dropped a bunch of songs to the ipod. Disconnected successfully. When I loaded up my ipod, it only showed the 300 or so songs I just loaded and not the files previously on there. When I check the capacity, it still says there is only 5gb remaining, but says there is only 300 songs on there. Any ideas? Songbird is muy important to me! Please help!
Hello, Just downloaded Songbird and really like it as an app. It can see my 2GB iPOD nano (black) and that's great. I can play from it and all, BUT I can't seem to be able to copy files from my computer to the iPOD. Tried Dragging & Dropping from my Library in main window to the device in the "Left hand" window and that doesn't work. If I right-click on a library track, the Copy to Device is grayed out. I think I'm just missing something - but what is it? I'm using Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. - CH
The one thing that will sway me to one player over another is the ability to transcode files while syncing. Options like "over a certain bitrate" or "certain file type (IE FLAC)" would be needed. So, I was wondering if this addon/Songbird will support that in the end?
A general transcoding architecture is being worked on for Songbird. When this is available, transcoding support can be added for the iPod.
Wonderful. Just like Firefox, Songbird will be my new software I can show off to friends.
I have the same problem on my Fedora Core 5 (x86_32), the iPod is mounted but the plug-in tells that there is no iPod connected. I hope the developer of this plug-in fix this, is the only thing that is missing to make Songbird my daily-use player.
I get the same problem with my 3Gen iPod. Also using Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. I plug in the iPod and it comes up ok. But I can't transfer any songs over. I tried the modifying the iPod preferences to set to manual update, auto update from playlist etc. but it just resets them every time so they have no effect. Does anyone have any ideas about this? Thanks, sg
Got a question. I use Rockbox on my iPod. Can this extension be used to transfer Ogg files to an iPod. Also I noticed someone was asking if Songbird would notify them of updates to thier iPod with this extension. If that isn't possible you guys may want to think about working out something with the Rockbox guys. It's an excenlent piece of firmware for the iPod.
Just answered my own question. Got my entire collection transcoded to ogg. Put em all on my iPod using songbird. From there Rockbox plays em off with out a problem.
Does this add-on support podcasts?
Great Add-on. Many thanks... any chance of getting the "Autofill" button added somehow? I like the randomness of not personally selecting what I'm listening to from my library. All the best.
I am also on Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn and can not get songs to copy to my ipod mini.
Exactly the same problem here with Feisty Fawn and an iPod mini. I can copy mp3's to my iPod mini using other apps such as gtkpod, floola, and Rhythmbox - but with Songbird the option to "Copy to Device" is greyed out. Very annoying.
just got a new hard drive and am starting from scratch. got songbird and the i pod support, don't even have i tunes on here yet. my problem is that when i plugged my i pod into the computer songbird made it's library sync with the i tunes library. while the i pod is plugged in you can play the songs from it via the songbird library. when you unplug it though the songs all stay (like 1,000 of 'em) in the songbird library even though they aren't on the computer anywhere. when you try to play one it is just silence. how do i get these phantom songs out of my library?
I've used this addon for a while with my 8 GB nano and I think that it's great. I've encountered one odd problem though: one song (Starship Troopers by Yes), refuses to upload to my iPod. The song name is listed on my iPod but not the iPod track listing on songbird, and the file is not on the iPod hard drive (so it doesn't play). I have it in two different cuts and have the same problem with both of them. How can I get songbird to properly load these songs?
I love Songbird! its refreshing to see someone finally working on a new media player after itune repeatedly crashed on me on multiple computers. And i know what i'm about to ask is probably answered elsewhere, but i really tried to find the solution to this (read the forum, bugzilla), but i couldn't find it anywhere... Unfortunately, the iPod sync does not seem to work. When i first connected my iPod, it asked whether if i want to remove all the files from the iPod. And i clicked on yes, and it started uploading songs, which took about a minute or so. But i didn't see any songs in the "iPod" folder, and only 30mb of space is used. And when i unplugged the iPod, all the songs i uploaded were there, but they just don't play. I read that some people have the similar problem, but i have yet to find a solution for this...any help would be appreciated!
I'm looking for an alternative to Itunes mainly because I do not want my music copied into a library on my harddrive. I just want to put music from my external drive or whereever onto my ipod without making copies. Before I download songbird and the ipod extension for OSX, can somebody explain to my how songbird handles their library and whether it copies the music into its own library, as this is not what I want. Thanks in advance Lisa
Did the comment 14 in bug 3210 apply to your problem? If not, I can create a new bug for your issue.
Please see bug 3512 at http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3512.
You can try to add your user to the "disk" group. It worked for me. Use the command 'usermod -G disk,your_user your_user'. Restart if Songird can't see the ipod yet, it happened to me the first time.
I can't see my ipod. I am Windows user, but i don't have admin rights... any suggestions?
Is support for Songbird 0.3 planned soon? Ver 0.2 doesn't work on my PC. Either way, thanks for all your work & for what I hear is a great tool.
I'm yet to try it myself - but any issue with Vista is likely due to UAC - try running SongBird as an administrator (Right Click on the Icon/Program and choose "Run as Administrator")
This is a wonderful extension, but (as has been mentioned), when a video is uploaded, it doesn't go in the appropriate location - looks like you stuff it in the music folder versus the video folder. Beyond this, it's very hard to beat this extension when wanting to use your iPod in Linux.
Do you have the iPod configured for disk mode?
I'm working on the 0.3 version now.
this is a good extension and it's very useful and this way i can avoid itunes yes! however songbird allows me to use .wma files and load them onto my ipod but the ipod doesnt play them is there a way around this?
Well, a really nice plugin but I've a few problems with it. First I can't drag and drop files, but this does not seem to have to do something with this plugin. My workaround is just to create a playlist named IPod and sync that playlist automatically. This is no problem for me, and the drag-and-drop bug seems to be fixed in songbird 0.3. Another annoying thing of this plugin is that files are copied more than one times onto the ipod when they're in various playlists. If a song is for example in 2 (local) playlists and I auto-sync those the song is copied twice onto the ipod. This is really annoying because I only have a 2gb nano so not that much space. Would be nice if you could fix that. And a last nice thing would be if you'd support image id3-tags (e.g. covers) and add those covers. I know from gtkpod that the ipod can show the cover while playing a song if it is tagged with it. Dunno how gtkpod does this, but it's a really nice feature.
yeah.. convert those files to mp3, because the ipod does not support wma, this has nothing to do with this plugin I think.
It does not what iTunes does. You select directories where you store your music and songbird searches in those for music files. Nothing is copied.
hi.. well im just checking with you guys if there is an existing addon that displays my music playing on songbird 0.2.5 on msn.. i've just installed songbird (switching from winamp due to the lack of support to vista users) and im looking through addons list but no trace of any msn addon.. is there anyone who knows if theres someone at this very moment fixing an addon like that or if this type of addon request seems to hard make it work with songbird.. if there's someone with an answer please pm me or just answer my reply. tnx //(sorry for my bad english)
Not only the iPod itself can show the images in id3-tags, also modern car audio systems like the mine do show iPod-Covers. The day this function is correctly implemented I never would make use of iTunes again, and finally would not have to boot windows everytime. I'll keep an eye on the great work Erik is doing with this extension.
You know that gtkpod can do this cover art thing under linux?
I have gtkpod installed, but it messes up my tags. For example, I set the tags in compilations to Artist: "Compilations", Title: Artist - Title - this is for having grouped all the compilation cds well under one artist which like mentioned is "Compilations". I don't know why and how it does that, but gtkpod shows me the real Artist-Name under "Artist" and not "Compilations". Yet I didn't try to synchronize the mess I see in gtkpod with the iPod. There are some other issues like that it doesn't support mpc and m4a at least for playing them (ok, the last one I know would work with a recompile, but it would take me to install all the development environment stuff only for that, and that's not worth it). I also use Amarok and it's great(!) cover-manager that uses Amazons Webservices for retrieving cover arts, but it seems like Amarok doesn't save the whole image in the id3-Tag. And Amarok can't link directly to the iPod-library like Songbird or iTunes do, I'd have to manually transfer the files. I really can't always know anything I changed in my audio-files, I expect the software checking this for me - and I don't want to always transfer the whole library, 'cause it's too big - a real synchronize function is crucial. This is why right now I put all my hope in the development of songbird and this extension, allowing me finally to use one program for full iPod experience, no matter whether I run windows or linux.
Eventually, transcoding support will be added to Songbird to automatically convert WMA's to MP3. For the 0.3 release, I'll change the iPod device extension to not place WMA and other non-playable files on the iPod.
The drag and drop and multiple files will be fixed for the version for 0.3. Album art will come later when it's added to Songbird.
It's an excellent extension and works on our 4G iPod, but will this have iPhone support?
Hey, very happy with songbirdnest as a whole but I just can't get this add-on to work with my 2nd gen 4Gb Nano... I'm running openSuSe 10.2; when I plug the ipod in, it mounts as /media/ipodnano and Banshee fires up and shows it present.... songbird doesn't however, even when I close banshee. BTW, nano is formatted to work with Windows (I've moved over from Vista) and has been restored back to default Any ideas?
I installed Songbird 0.2.5 and do have the add-on for iPod. My iPod is 1st gen (20g) My ipod stays flashing with "Do Not Disconnect" and my Songbird just stays at "Mounting iPod 0%" I can see the ipod from windows explorer. I am using Win XP. Any tips, much appreciated
rlloyd, Everybody hates Itunes because it had a virtual monopoly on a great gadget and it had a chance to set a standard. It set that standard to the lowest level possible. One of the things I hate so much about Itunes is that if you've set it to download your podcasts, if you haven't listened to an episode for a little while, it stops downloading them. The sound is carp, when the hardware is capable of so much more. Listening to Opera or strings at 32 kbps is ear destroying, put it up to 192 kbps or 320 kbps, which some European stations are webcasting classical music at: and its balm for the ears instead. Just a start, friend, good luck. brendan
I have one problem: I used songbird for puting music on my Ipod (2nd generation). It was great. Then I update my libary and I got double songs on my ipod. Not very good. Then I descided to clean up this mess. I deleted all the music from my Ipod. I did it. However there are still names of the music visable on my ipod which cannot be played obviusly. I tried to sync with my library and the result was same songs three times where only one time music is actually below the name. I hope I made myself clear. Please adivse how to clean up this mess.

It may be a permissions issue. Take a look at the following bug: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2921 Banshee probably uses the HAL driver. I'd like to add support for that at some point. I think it will fix these issues.
Hmm. Not sure what it would be. I'm going to release a version for Songbird 0.3 soon, and it has several bug fixes that may address this issue.
Try restoring your iPod to factory settings. That will erase everything.
using PCLinuxOS 2007... songbird .25 and .3pre... my video ipod isnt mounted within songbird unless i log in as root. running songbird as root just crashes songbird. this is really irritating (because i know its just something small thats making it not work) any ideas?
Take a look at the following bug: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2921
yes, setting the "disk" permission worked like magic. <3
I've just uploaded a version of the iPod device extension for Songbird 0.3 at http://addons.songbirdnest.com/extensions/detail/52.
i have ubuntu and when i install this addon and restart the songbird i get this error at terminal "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" and the songbird closes...in order to open the songbird i have to write this command "songbird -safe-mode" and then disable this addon and restart the songbird....do you have any ideas how to fix it?
Erik, Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for this plugin. I cannot express my gratefulness that talented software engineers are working to provide an alternative to the iTunes chokehold that has clipped the wings on my enjoyment of music. Is there any chance that you or the Songbird team eventaully plan iPhone support? I know that is a lot to ask and there's a lot on your plate.. but it would be a creme de lacreme of dreams come true. Lightspeed to you, Brett

I'm using SongBird 0.2.5.1 along with iPod Device Support v1.0.2 and the latest iPod classic 80GB. I'm doing a manual drag of music over to the iPod and when I access the iPod it shows no music available. When I go into iTunes, can't access the iPod correctly and then I end up with a Factory Restore. Is the issue that the iPod Device Support just hasn't been updated to work with the latest iPod or could there be a different issue here? Thanks. Randy
I switched over to the .3 release of SongBird and attempted to use the iPod Device Support v2.0. It didn't even recognize the iPod device. I've got the new iPod Classic 80GB that was recently released. Thoughts? Randy
I got the latest version of SongBird 20070911 and that seemed to fix the issue. I'm still having a problem when dragging songs to the iPod as it seems to corrupt the iPod and force me to do a restore. :-(
Apple has changed some things in the way the latest iPods work. The developers of the libgpod library that the extension uses are working to address this. There will be an update of the extension for the Songbird 0.3 release with support for the new iPods.

Is there any chance that this add-on can be extended to allow songs from "unlinked" iPod to be copied over to a location on the PC that is tracked by the Songbird library? What that would mean is that if a friend brought over an iPod, and I wanted some songs from it, I could just connect the cable and drag some of the songs from it into my computer. Similarly, I would like to be able to copy a song from my computer onto his iPod. Hopefully without messing up the iTunes DB on his iPod so that when he connects it back to his PC, that his Songbird or iTunes won't complain about the new songs.
Wether it is this, or the main program, when you are loading songs onto the Ipod and then you exit the program it doesn't prompt you if you really want to exit while songs are still being copied. I found this to be a problem when I was first loading my ipod because if you keep dragging and dropping songs to the ipod the status bar seems to stop working. It's not a big deal, but probably something that should exist. Also for some reason when I select my Ipod it freezes my computer for sometimes 3 or 4 minutes. I have a pretty fast computer so it's surprising. It didn't seem to happen when my ipod library was smaller so perhaps it has something to do with the way it is reading the ipod database (though this is after the initial sync to the ipod when you first open the program) I really like the program though. Really good works guys
Thanks for all the effort on this. Has support for the new iPod Classic been released yet? Target date?
Terrible addon. I've played with it for several months now with my old ipod shuffle and consistently run into the following problems: 1. After deleting all the tracks, the available space doesn't update. Still says almost full. 2. Can't drag a song into the ipod 3. Even if a song is in the library, half the time it won't go into the ipod 4. If I can get songs into the ipod, half the time they don't play. There could be 16 tracks but only the first four will play 5. Strange behavior with blank spaces between tracks. A useless plugin in my opinion. I've tried it with blank slate (deleted everything in the ipod), followed most if not all of the helpful suggestions, and still no luck. Perhaps it's because I have a first edition shuffle and the plugin doesn't support it? Who knows, but it's the only reason I tried out songbird. Songbird itself is large, clunky, and slow (why use Songbird when you can use winamp?) Good luck with this, I am happy to go back to itunes for ipod support.
Does this allow me to put music from my ipod onto songbird, without syncing them? I just got a new laptop and downloaded this Songbird onto it. I want to put the songs from my ipod onto this laptop via songbird... is this the way to do it??
I'm running 0.3pre, but when this addon is enabled, songbird fails to start. This is on Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty) help plz?!?
ipod newbie here. I just bought the 3rd gen ipod nano and now find itunes won't work with my Windows 2000 Pro OS. Will Songbird fix this for me or do I have to upgrade to XP? Thanks.
I am really happy as i can made as many IPOD downloads as i want by searching music through the library.
Love the addon - thanks for making my ipod usable again :D .. One thing I noticed, when copying a song that's over 1 hour in length, the addon marks the time as [hh:mm] but drops the seconds. My ipod (1st gen nano) reads this as [mm:ss] and plays only the first 2 minutes of a 2 hour track. Thanks for the great add!
I tried to update this, however, it keeps telling me this: "iPod Device Support" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Songbird build type (WINNT_x86-msvc). Please contact the author of this item about the problem. I just updated to the nightly build 0.3RC2
I had to remove the old add-on first then it installed fine from within Songbird... still crashes when I plug my iPod in though.
Hi I have just downloaded the the nightly build (27 Oct) and tried it with the ipod touch (with windows vista). It does not show up. Any hope on getting it to work?
The newest iPod's (Touch included) have an updated firmware which only allows them to be synched with iTunes.
I am for sure no expert, indeed the Ipod touch (or Iphone) what I understand have an encrypted Itunes database. There is however some info on the encryption keys. No idea how to use it buy maybe somebody with knowledge... http://ipodminusitunes.blogspot.com/2007/09/weve-won.html
Will this work with the new ipod touch? If so then thats awsome! I have been wanting to buy one but hate iTunes!
Hello! I was really impressed by Songbird as a music library, being the firefox of music players that it is. This extension even made it more awesome! However, there is a slight problem that I have ran into. Upon connecting my iPod Classic (6th gen; 160GB), Songbird detected it and mounted all my songs and videos. After that, I transferred a few movies to my iPod and then disconnected it. I was surprised to know that all my media files were wiped out. No songs, no videos, no podcasts, nothing! After doing a soft reset, I tried plugging the iPod back. Songbird detected all my media and mounted them again! It's either I'm doing something terribly wrong, or Songbird doesn't support the 6th gen models yet. Anyone ran into the same problem? Any solutions? I'm gonna try restoring my iPod tomorrow and then give it a try at Songbird again. If it still poses the same problem, I'm stuck with iTunes again :( I really hope to find a solution, Songbird's integration with this is extension is faster. I liked it already. :(
Support for the latest generation iPods is being tracked at http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5287.
I can't use Itunes anymore because I now have a Firefox computer so i went in search for an I-Tunes like site and I found this, but I can't figure out how to work it other than to play the music. I want to use it to download music to my Ipod, can you help me with this? Also when this site becomes more well known, (I hope you don't)will you start charging?
I can't download the music to my ipod but I can listen to it normally just fine how do I download?
I can't install it. Reason: "Songbird iPod Device Support 1.0.2 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Songbird 0.3.1" I've Ubuntu 7.10 e Songbird 0.3.1.. the extension downloaded is 1.0.2 for linux (x86) version.. What's happening? Not planned a new version for linux?? Thanks in advance.
This add-on it's really nice and usefull, but it needs to be developed more. I have a 60Gb iPod Video, 5G. I use Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 and every time i plug it in, songbird recognize it, i can see all my music but i can only see half of the playlist i have. The majority of the playlist I have inside my iPod are smart-playlists. I would like this add-on to be able to manage smart-playlists and that all my playlist would show up in songbird. I'm really happy for this software, but I'm waiting until a final version of this add-on works.
Hi there! I just bought an Ipod classic 80G. And i just hate Itunes! So i find Songbird on the web. Looks great! But before i install it i got a few questions. Will the addon support the classic 80G completly? Will i be able to synchronize mp3, videos, pictures, podcast and my calender(like in Itunes)? Can i update my player through Songbird? Hope that all is possible or will be. Sorry for my bad english.
i'm running a linux computer, linuxmint 4.0 it uses ubuntu 7.10 gusty, and i'm using songbird Linux x86_64, and it says that this add on is not compatible with this version of songbird. any idea
According to 'Retune' (http://retune.sourceforge.net/): "Apple introduced a checksumming scheme to prevent third-party tools like reTune from operating with the new iPods. Until this protection mechanism is broken, reTune will not work with the classic, fat nano and touch models." Is this the reason songs do not appear on my 3g iPod nano after sync'ing using Songbird? Anyone found a work around?
i recently got the ipod touch, does anyone know if it is compatible?
Dear All, I'm currently using Ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell XPS 1210m. I've previously been a windows user and had been using Itunes to manage songs on my ipod. I have a Video Ipod 160 GB and I'm running a faily large library on Itunes (about 450 playlists and 9500 songs) No video, No images (only artwork) and some 25-30 Podcasts (210 files in them) I installd Songbird 0.3 on Ubuntu and added the necessary adons to support the ipod (Ipod support and the itunes library importer) On connecting I have to wait some 25 minutes before I can see all playlists and songs in Songbird (it says mouting ipod - fair) Now I edit a few playlists (just for test) and then click on Eject. Eject does not work. Software is alive but no response to the Eject command. Next I close Songbird and I get an error (saying that songbird encountered an error and that an Email will be sent reporting the issue) Next i get an error saying that the error could not be sent for some reason (i have an internect connection at this time) I am now trying to import the big itunes library and trying the sync option. It would be really hard to wait 25 minutes for the ipod to mount. After having tried this (it took about 25 minuutes to import the XML from Windows Itunes. But now whenever I connect the ipod, Songbird goes blank. The interface turns black and looses all text on it. One of the main reasons of taking the Ubuntu plundge was that I knew that I was covered by Songbird + this ipod support to take care of the itunes that I could and wanted to replace. Has anyone had better luck with a similar sized database and ipod model? Any inputs would be greatly appriciated! Cheers :-) Karan
Yeah, when I add the songs to my 6g 80 gig iPod Classic, they just disappear and I cannot find them or listen to them, what is going on?
After connecting my iPod, I get the message “iPod operation failed” in the statusbar of Songbird. I’m using iPod Device Support 2.1.5, and Songbird 0.4rc2, in Windows XP.
I use foobar2000 currently to transfer songs to my iPod…is it possible this is causing a conflict? Can iPod Device Support only read iPod DBs created by iTunes?
Hi!
I just downloaded the 0.4rc2 for linux (both i686 and amd64) with iPod plugin and I liked much the application!
The problem is, it just wont detetect my ipod nano 3g. I tried with an older nano and all its ok, it gets mounted ad i can manage it, but the new one just gets mounted and songbird cannot see it.
Any idea? I should mention that there is no iPod tab in Options
My plugin version is 2.1.5
A dumb move:
I tried using “sudo” songbird … and now i can not start songbird as a normal user, it is stuck in a cycle showing me the eula:
spacetree@spacetree-laptop:~$ ‘/home/spacetree/Programas/Songbird/songbird’ doEULA

any idea?
I’ve downloaded the 0.3, 0.4, and pre0.5 versions of SongBird and NONE of them will allow me to install this amazingly awesome extension… I keep getting the add-on isn’t compatible with x version of SongBird. Help!
alright, so i tested a windows formatted ipod (video 30 gigs) on songbird on a mac, and it reads it, while itunes requires to reformat it for mac. Wonderful.
Then i tried another ipod, mac formatted this time (same model–video 30 gigs) on songbird on a windows pc, and it wouldn’t read it.
I read online that this is because the new mac formatted ipod softwares are in hfs+ which windows can’t read…but that the windows formatted ones can be read by macs, but that apple is blocking windows formatted ipods managing/syncing because they want more people to use/buy macs(how great!_)…
So, my question is, are you planning/going to make it possible for songbird installed on windows to read, manage and sync mac formatted ipods, kind of like hfsexplorer does but in a more user-friendly way, without having to reformat it for windows?
This is definetely something i would be looking for as i work with both mac and windows.
thank you, -Alex.
This is something I was searching for for a long time. None of the Linux iPod song managers was up to my needs but this extension is just perfect. Works fine with Fedora 8 and iPod Nano.
I’ve been running into a problem with syncing up my iPod with this extension (I’m running 0.4). It crashes anytime Songbird tries to sync a file that has Unicode characters in it. Namely, my girlfriend is a fan of J-Pop music (that have these characters in the titles), and when we sync up her iPod, it’ll immediately crash SongBird. I had a few tunes on my iPod that used Unicode characters and was experiencing the same issue until I deleted those files from the library, now it syncs up just fine.
Unfortunately for now I have to use iTunes on my girlfriends iPod until SongBird will support those characters.

I am also getting this error when connecting the Ipod, I also have foobar2000, but I do not have the Ipod extension for it, I just uninstalled itunes and set the ipod to disk support. P.S. I have a gen 2 ipod Shuffle
Can i have some step by step instructions, i have it installed but it won’t work!
It wont recognize my ipod
Are you sure you’re using at least version 0.6.0 of libgpod? Mine still gets corrupted.
I was also getting “iPod Operation Failed” error when I was plugging my shuffle into Songbird 0.4 (Win XP).
Solved it by formatting shuffle using standard windows formatting (right clicking on drive, format etc), with Songbird closed I should add.
After formatting, I reopened Songbird and now it all works dandy thanks very much.
perhaps one of the following are relevant to why this occurred:
a) I was previously using iPod on another machine with Vista and Songbird 0.2
b) the XP machine had never had sniff of an iPod or iTunes before (cant see how this would matter but hey I thought it was worth mentioning)
About at what time can we expect iPod touch support? Also, when iPod touch support is added, will it be possible to transfer music back and forth? This would be an awesome feature, I know it’s fairly easy to implement for people who know what they’re doing, and all programs that I’ve found that do this need to be paid for :–(
Rusty, I doubt many programs REALLY sync with the ipod touch. This website is the base for what the author is using. When this program/library supports ipod touch/iphone, you will be able to as well.
http://www.gtkpod.org
Hey Erik! Thank you for your Addon. But give please some more info about iPhone/iPod touch support. As you told only problem is a disk mode. It can be solved and iPhone can be mounted via wifi and ssh (sshfs). But Songbird doesn’t recognize it. Current user have all permittions to all files inside /mnt/ipodtouch. See /etc/mtab:
sshfs#root@192.168.10.5:/var/root/Media /mnt/ipodtouch fuse rw,nosuid,nodev,max_read=65536,user=123456 0 0
How the songbird detect is the iPod mounted or not? libgpod already support iPhone.
Dear person who created this. i have a problom i installed your ipod device and i can’t seem to work it? can you or anyone help.
I’m looking into this. I think I can make the detection work with ssh.
Can you provide details of your system and iPod? You can do that here or create a bug at bugzilla.songbirdnest.com.
To whoever is developing this:
I had an idea of a way to sync with the iPod Touch, although, it is kind of hackish and would require a jailbroken Touch.
Why not share the Music over WiFi? Not like the iTunes music sharing protocol, but read the iTunesDB file off of the iPod Touch.
Another way, would be to access the iPT’s filesystem directly. This is possible through an application called iPhuc, and this method would not require a jailbroken ’pod.
The above should also apply to the iPhone.
I have a SLVR on MacOS and plugging it in with this plugin running does nothing.
When i first downloaded songbird this was a recommended add on, and as i can’t get itunes to even install on my laptop, i thought this would be a good solution, all went smoothly wen i installed and it synced all my music and ideos to my 5G ipod classic. however wen an update was released for this add on, song bird now crashed everytime i plug my ipod in and will not sync it at all, is there any way to roll back the version so i can use the lder one agen?? or is this issue being fixed?
Hello, first of all I want to say nice app. Second, I have two issues/problems I need help with.
1- My ipod (Mini) won’t play any WMA files. All my MP3 files are playing just fine (infact both file format sync within the ipod) but no luck playing the WMA files. My ipod mini was able to play wma files before. what gives?
2- Rating a song does not work. Any song I choose to rate (5 star for example) on my ipod does not reflect back in my ipod library when synced back.
any suggestions? Please and thank you.
I don’t know how anything works!! I’ve downloaded Qtrax, now how do I get music! Someone please help me.
Sorry, I’m trying this with an iPod shuffle 1st generation, Songbird 0.4 on winXP. I have not imported the iTunes library, since I just don’t have it and the iPod is linked to the iTunes library on MacOSX. I’d like to know what should happen when the iPod is connected to the computer, since i can’t find any way to make songbird read it…
thaks for the attention
im trying to download the ipod device support, but i cant open it since its not compatible with firefox. what program should i open it with instead?? thanks…i really need help here. :s
Great application, and a well-appreciated add-on for my 1G nano. Two mods to this add-on would be further appreciated: 1) podcast support such that the podcast when played on Songbird then shows up on the iPod as “Played” (or “Not new”); 2) support remembering the playback position of podcasts or any other songs where this is turned on.
Again, thanks. Great application!
The extension is not working with my new Nano 4GB, either on Ubuntu or Fedora. When I plug the ipod, it is mounted automatically by Gnome but it doesn’t appear in Songbird (although it does work in Songbird inside Windows Vista here). I tried to add the disk group to my user and it didn’t change anything. Help please !!!
It just doesn’t work. The Ipod comes up on my Qtrax (Songbird 0.4), and i prompts me to erase and sync my ipod, which i do, but the `i-pod application failure` comes up. Then itunes opens asking me to sync my i-pod with the current itunes library. I close down itunes, and when i go back to Qtrax, there is no record of my ipod ever being connected (even thought it still is! And my i-pod has been wiped completely of songs!
Also, the extension causes a malform overlay, and the songbird prompt tells me to disable them methodically to locate the malfunctioning add-on. I’ve located it as this one. Please fix this, which could be the best add-on of them all.
libgpod 0.6.0 claims:
There’s also preliminary support for the iPhone and the iPod Touch but they must be jailbroken to work.
My iPod Touch has been jailbroken… and I am going to try it with songbird and this addon… has anyone else?
Is there any documentation on this? I’d like to know more about this extension before I go all willy-nilly and plug in my hardware. Specifically, will it erase my Ipod.
Is there any documentation? I’d like to understand more about this extension before I commit my Ipod.
Looks like it works well, but I have a problem with not reading the length of the MP3 file, and when I try to ‘scan’ an MP3 on my Ipod, it doesn’t work because it thinks the MP3 is 0.00 minutes long.
Any suggestions, or is this a known bug. Not sure if it is ipod or songbird specific.
Nice work!! This is an excellent extension, and I’m really looking forward to use it, as I’m another one to the bunch that hate iTunes.
I’m waiting for the final version though, and the following are the features I think that would be the escential:
-Movies, Clips and TV Shows
-Podcasts Sync
-Photos Sync
-Song qualifications Sync
-Smartlists Sync
Sorry to ask that much!
The closed and propriety nature of iTunes and Apple’s new digital “Movie Rental and TV Show Licensing” monolopy really suck. Cheers to the developers who are working so hard to let us use these devices unshackled as we see fit, without the headaches and heatbreaks that come with trying to do almost anything on them!
My 160gb iPod Classic (windows formatted) doesn’t show up in Songbird at all on Ubuntu 7.10. When I plug it in it mounts on the desktop and I can access it fine via gtkpod, but not with Songbird. Any ideas?
Hi. I see you actually import the rating, but since the rating is stored as “20 = 1, 40 = 2, 60 = 3, 80 = 4 and 100 = 5” the rating doesn’t appear in the rating column and if you change the rating, the ipod won’t recognize it. Is it a possibility you can fix that?
Have you made any progress? 60g ipod and win XP–synchronize and everything seems fine. However, Songbird suddenly closes itself at the end of the sync. Look at the ipod in Windows explorer and all the music is in the music folder. However, disconnect the ipod & try to use it and there seems to be nothing at all. Try to resync and it seems to copy it all again.
I really don’t get it. Back to Itunes for the moment.
I updated to songbird 0.5rc1 and ver 2.2.0 of the extension and it works now!
Hey, please please PLEASE have an option to disable the “do you want to sync?” dialog. I do not want to sync my iPod and I’m afraid I might click “yes” by mistake (and therefore erasing everything). :(
Ive heard that the database encryption (if thats the right word to use) has been cracked for the ipod touch/iphone. Can anyone confirm this? If so is it likely that the addon will be updated to allow support for the ipod touch?
You need to make this compatible with Sb .5
Why cant I install it on my Version of SONGBIRD ?
Every time I had tried I get an error cause it isn’t compatible, should I downgrade from my version and then install and if so how do I do that ?
which is Version: Songbird/0.5 (20080325224511) (2008032515)
Visualizing a world where Mac users have a real alternative to iTunes. It is the worst, least usable program ever invented in history!
Hi, the same for me.
This add-on doesnt work with songbird 0.5.
Does anyone can tell when an update of the add-on will be released ?
Thank you all for the great work done !
Hi
IĆĀ“m trying very hard to leave iTunes and wish to migrate to songbird, but canĆĀ“t make it work on my 2nd Gen iPod shuffle. Songbird 0.5 simply doesn’t recognize it.
I’ve also tried the 0.4 version, and didn’t work either.
Please, Help me!
Thanks.
I am having difficulty with the iPod plugin syncing m4b (audiobook) files to my iPod Classic. Songbird reports the error that the file type is not supported by my device. Songbird plays the files with no problemt. If I copy the file to my old iPod with Floola the files play with no problems.
Needs to support importing iTunes RATINGS!!
I’m using Win XP with Songbird 0.5 and a Windows formatted 60GB photo ipod. I upgraded to 0.5 a while ago and updated this plugin accordingly. Though it recognizes my iPod, the library listing is all messed up. It lists the last song I added 10 or 20 times, then lists a random song, and goes back to listing the last song added another 10 or 20 songs. It’s not just reading the title wrong, when i try playing any of them, they’re the same song, though it lists the right number of songs for the library/playlist. Help!
Using Windows XP with Songbird 0.5, my 20gb 5th gen iPod running 3.1.1 will not sync properly.
Current Issue: Songs and playlists imported from the previous iTunes library will sync, but playlists created in Songbird will be empty after syncing.
History: Originally, Songbird synced with my iPod, which had previously been synced to an iTunes Library on another system. I confirmed when it asked it I wanted to sync to the Songbird library instead. After erasing the existing songs and copying over the songs from Songbird, the iPod displayed 0 songs. Songbird was also no longer able to mount the iPod; it just waited infinitely with the status message “Mounting iPod…”. I had to restore the iPod to factory settings with the iTunes installation on the old system. The current status is listed above.
Songbird is a great program and I’d love to use it, but I can’t make the jump unless my iPod is fully supported as well. Keep up the good work, and I hope to be back soon!
Which version of Sonbird are you using if its 0.5 then try reinstalling it or get an older version.
K
I use to have the same problem what you can do is get Songbird 0.5 get the supported iPod add-on and make sure your iPod is a Windows formatted iPod. My iPod use to be a Mac formatted one and it would usually sync the songs too fast and then songbird would close. So in other words the Win formatted iPods are better, and just incase you don’t know how to format and iPod to windows. Get to a Win Machine with iTunes plug in your iPod and click on restore and let it restore. Then plug it in to your system and open songbird and sync
Have fun =)
The iPod touch is currently not supported. Seeing how your on Vista just use iTunes. Yeah i know that sucks but your going to have to wait.
Which iPod are you using? if Touch then its still not supported Email me for instructions if your iPod is not a touch. Rakan21@gmail.com
The way I fixed this problem was I just restored my iPod with iTunes (windows formatted) and then it worked fine with Ubuntu. I have no idea if it will work with XP.
Just make it Windows formatted and then you can pretty much use it on a Windows and Linux machine. I use to use Leopard, and it would always tell me that its not Mac formatted click restore to reformat it.
ah Songbird. Its powered by Mozilla thats why Firefox thinks there add-ons.
If your using Ubuntu then make sure your iPod is Windows Formatted because something is messed up with the Mac formatted one.
I plugged in my 3rd gen iPod nano and it didn’t do anything. :( is there a fix for this?
I WANT 0.5 SUPPORT!
Everything works fine for me… except that the Artists with big letters apear before the artists with small letters on the ipod (classic) and that isn’t the case in songbird.
For example I have NICKELBACK before Nelly or DJ (because the J is big) Furax before Dj Coone.
I’m running Ubuntu 8.10 on a PENTIUM 4
Love Songbird! Last thing I need from iTunes is Nike+ support. How hard would it be to add data synchronization with Nike+ website to this extension ? Or perhaps it could make an extension of its own ?
Can we sync movies, music videos and photos yet?
PleAsE oH pLeAsE…0.5 sUpPoRt !!
It does not seem to work with my 30-gig 5G ipod on Ubuntu 7.10.
Ipod is recognized by the OS, volume is mounted, the icon is on the
desktop, I can use it with gtkpod – but nothing happens in
songbird. The ipod is windows-formatted.
Is there a some place to check debug log to help me figure this
out?
If you add ‘Drag and Drop’ functionality it would be great! So we could drag songs from library and drop it into ipod library…
Does this add-on work with Songbird 0.6? I have a 30gig video
iPod that synced with my Songbird library. Two problems, one, I
think it might have doubled the files on my iPod even though it did
appear to erase the original iTunes library and upload the library
from Songbird, and two, I can’t see any of my music on my
iPod. Everything is blank, though the iPod’s
“About” acknowledges that there are only 6 gigs of
unused space on my iPod.
Thanks if you can answer this. :)
I have an Ipod nano and I recently just got song bird, I go to plug my Ipod in and everything is working fine, until it just all the sudden stops downloading the music and says for some reason it cant. What do I do?
Any chance of iPod auto-scrobbling?
I can’t get it to work at all. It sets up the ipod but i
can’t copy songs manually or sync (even though it says sync
completed). If I right click a track then “add device”,
iPod is greyed out. Any ideas?
Using vista / songbird 0.6 / 80gb ipod classic.
I think there’s something wrong with this. Whenever I try to install it on Songbird 0.6, it says it’s not a valid add-on.
After the current problem with broken iPod support on Linux is solved (bug 10011), it’d cool to have see support for iPod playlists.
Good effort but horribly broken. It seems to only recognize 2300 of the 4000 normal mp3 files on my iPod. Also Songbird seems to freeze up a song is being played from the iPod while browsing the web.
HOW DO I ADD ALUBM PICTURE TO THE IPOD IS THERE A WAY I KNOW ONLY ITUNES BUT I DONT KNOW THE WAY TO UPLOAD THE ALUBM PICTURE TO MINE IPOD NANO?
I have the same question as previous post. Is there any support
for uploading the album artwork from songbird to the Nano (3rd
generation)? That would make this software even slicker!!
-Michael D.
Using an iPod Nano, 3rd generation: After sync, music will play on the iPod, but all songs are listed with 0:00 duration and I cannot seek through songs. Volume intermittently drops as well.
I have the same question as fly2yum and lkingzin53 posts.
If there any support for uploading album artwork (which are in
metadata)
If not, when this feature will be available ?
i hav a whole bunch of album artwork on my ipod but this screws
it up really badly
it like shifts all the artwork to random songs
but otherwise its tight
Any chances for photo support? Love showing off with my pictures
=)

I can’t delete songs from my iPod..
On Songbird, it removes the song from the library but when I eject
my iPod, they’re still there. I plug it back in and the songs
are still in the library.
ok
I'm having trouble syncing my library with my iPod Classic 80GB. It finds and successfully mounts my iPod, but when i click sync (with the sync all option selected) it loads for a few seconds and says it's done, after doing no syncing. I set it to manual sync, and from my library I can sync songs. The only problem is it transfers nothing but the song file, with none of it's information. In other words, every song is Unknown Artist, Unknown Title, Unknown Album, etc. I'm sure you can see why this isn't very useful.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
I forgot to mention that I run Ubuntu 8.04 (up-to-date) and Sonbird 0.6.1 and iPod Device Support 3.0.6
Is this addon only for those who sync their music? I've set up my ipod library manually and songbid doesn't find my ipod.
80GB video ipod, fedora 9 linux
same question that joyre, fly2yum and lkingzin53 posts.
Please add album artwork to iPod Device Support!
I think that it's the only thing that is missed, after that I will believe that Songbird is better than Amarok :)
When I send across an mp3 (auduio book) that is large like 200 MB, the ipod cannot seek through it using Songbird 0.61, ext for ipod 3.06. Yet when i sync with itunes it can.Can anything be done about that?
I noticed a few comments above about the Motorola SLVR. I'm running Songbird 0.6.1 with the iPod Extension for iPod 3.0.6 on Ubuntu 8.04 and it does not recognize my phone. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
when i open my ipod on iTunes i didnt see Movie on the Device only what i see
Music
90's Music
Music video
My Top Rated
Top 25 Most Played ...
but i don't see Movie .. So I Cant add videos to my Ipod
i have ipod for 20GB
fan-tastic. love the amazing functionality in the alpha .7 release. it's as good as iTunes with my iPod--even better because i can add anything i want to into the podcast playlist.
thanks!
When I add songs to my iPod it doesn't show up in the iPod's list. It is there, but when iPod is disconnected the added songs are not accessable. I got an elrt saying something to the effect that the list format wasn't correct & to reformat using iTunes. That isn't an option for me. So, how do I add files using Songbird to the iPod & be able to see & play them on the iPod?
thanks
Hello,
I am using Fedora 9 and iPod video 80GB. Connecting to my iPod with amarok, rhythmbox etc works fine, but I can't get it working with Songbird. I've dowloaded this plugin over and over again, but no matter what, Songbird just doesn't find my iPod.
My iPod is set to disk mode and I manage my music manually (via iTunes and Amarok, depending on which OS I am currently using).
What could be the problem?
older versions of this add-on allowed you to move music both to and FROM your ipod. now i find that it only allows me to move music to the ipod. if i drag and drop from my ipod to my library it places the file in the library, but will only play with the ipod connected. any chance of going back to the previous function?
will there be an update to make iphone compatible with songbird? (syncing, back up, etc ... )
Rating a song doesn't work.
This plugin synced my Songbird library fine with my 30 GB iPod video, except for a couple annoying bugs:
1) When I try to scroll quickly through the artists on my iPod, it shows the first letter of the artists' names that I am scrolling through correctly half of the time, but the other half of the time it displays the letter "T". So when I scroll through the A's such as Air or Anti-Flag, I'll see "A" alternating with "T".
2) The iTunes playlist now differentiates between upper-case and lower-case letters, so "evan greer" is at the end of the list of artists instead of next to "Evanescence". Also, other random artists show up at the end of the list of artists if for instance they have a foreign character in their name anywhere. Neither of these things happens when I sync my iPod with iTunes.
This could be such a great addon. But at the moment for me its completely useless as it doesn't support syncing of album artworks.
Could you please add that?
For the moment only two stars. Give us the sync for artwork and rating, playcounts and so on. In this version I can't use it and... sorry Songbird. Without iPod Support I have to use Amarok.
Please support "Skip Track on Shuffle"
any chance of adding last.fm scrobbling?
forgive me if this has been addressed before, but is it possible just to include the m4p (drm) files in songbird just so i can manage them, even if i can't play them? or even just let me play them and get a failure. given el-tunes and songbird's gstreamer direction, it may be possible one day. minimally, i'd like to be able to get the files onto my ipod in the same interface.
I know it has been said a lot of time before me. BUT, songbird would be PERFECT if it was possible to export album arts to the iPod... Sorry to be the 100th person to tell you so, I know that pression don't help in any way! But I had to say it.
I still have to use Amarok...
Hola:
I have a 4G iPod but want Baja music, photos to the computer but my computer is Windows Vista and tells me that does not recognize the Archive What can you do?, IF can help me?
Can't view album art in ipod after syncing the files. MP3 does have album art in the ID3 tags. Please add album art support for iPods
Does this support the new nano 4th gen? Or will it be some time before support for it is added? Thanks.
i dont get it.... whenever i go to the install page it will not install it says its an invalid install page
if you're using your browser to download it, save it to your desktop first, then in songbird, on the addons panel click install and locate the .xpi file. OR if you were using your browser, use songbird instead, using songbird's browser...
Hey, is there still going to be Mac PPC support for this addon? I just looked through the previous versions list and the last release of the addon that worked on PPC was for songbird 6.
Hey mate, have installed songbird and all is well and good, the same as when i attempt to download the itunes device support. However after i download the itunes device support nothing happens, it won't read my ipod at all.
I'm having the *exact* same experience as Skyfaller, syncing an 80GB iPod video w/ Vista:
Same two bugs:
I've also noticed some duplicates of songs in some of the playlists - e.g. for a particular TV on the Radio album, there are two copies of each song although only one is in my Songbird library.
Please release an update that will fix these bugs! I'm happy to file a more detailed bug report if you'd like.
It would be great to have OpenSolaris supported.
Yep, I'd love OpenSolaris support too!
I hook my ipod up to the computer and sycronize it with my library were all my songs are and it does sycronize it, but when i take my ipod out of the port I have no songs, whats the matter?
also when i right click a song in my reg library not my ipod library and click on put in to my ipod library it says like( track 1 in ipod) or something then i switch over and its not there.
I definitely vote for fixing the foreign character problem.
My iPod shuffle isn't supported properly. I mean, Songbird can't autofill it like iTunes. Besides, I need autoconversion for that matter. Will this ever be implemented?
when will this add on put album art on the ipod with the music because my ipod has the music but it doesn't have the album art i have an ipod nano chromatic and it has a feature were you can browse the the covers of albums but i can't use this feature because i have no album art but besides that i love the add on
i think this add on is great,
but is there any way to add photos to ipods through this?
Any chance that the iPhone will be supported? That would be absolutely fabulous (and finally enable me to completely switch from windows to linux)!
Hey,
If we could get support for this on opensolaris it would be awesome!
-Ryan
does not support iPod Touch :(
How do I get this add-on to detect my iPod? I have a 80G classic, the latest version, and no matter what I do Songbird will not detect my iPod. I have cleared it of all content (not restored it, though), and turned off iTunes auto-launch feature. Is there a manual way to get the app to detect my iPod?
I'm having a weird problem. 30G Ipod, older than dirt... for some reason I can play all my songs, but I can't skip through them - it's like playing a .wmv that refuses to let you jump around inside the file. I can only play from beginning to end - no fastforwarding or anything. What the hell?
does not work with my ipod touch and i see there are allot of other problems that need to be sorted as well please sort them out
I'm having troubles with the transferring *.m4b files, which are essentially just AAC files which the iPod plays without problem. The m4b extension is used by iPod Audiobooks, but all of my books are non-drmed.
This is the only thing keeping me from uninstalling iTunes completely.
Here to confirm that this extension DOESN'T work with the new IPOD Touch 2g
same here... will this extension be updated?
Doesn't work with iPhone 3G, which is really too bad as I would like to get rid of iTunes :-/
Please support unicode.
Can you please tell me how to activate "play", "pause" etc buttons on the keyboard on Songbird? These keys work for iTunes, but not Songbird.
Hi,
Firstly, just discovered songbird and the iPod device support add-on. So, dumb question(s) time... IS there some newbie user doco to read? Will this work on 80gb Video ipod with latest firmware? Will i be able to install software on multiple PC's and keep them in sync, by having the iPod hold the "master" copy of the songs ?
Regards Gary
I really hope this were updated to support the ipod touch 2g and the iphone 3g that way I could get rid of my windows partition to sync my music....
hi erik,
i have a question and a comment, i hope you're around to help me.... i've had songbird for a few months, and the ipod sync capability is most important to me. i'm only getting around to now because it seems a little complicated- also because i'll have to re-install itunes on my computer if it doesn't work, which i dread.
problem: when i plug my ipod into my pooter, and songbird is on, a little icon starts spinning which i believe is the "sync" icon. a list of what's on my ipod comes up but i don't think it's actually syncing, because when i go into the device window, it says the device is mounting. the big problem is that it never stops mounting.
i've tried working around this but to no avail. i can apparently delete songs while it's mounting but not add them. (if i unplug my ipod and look for the songs on it afterwards, they are not there.) so, i plugged my ipod back in and tried canceling the mounting process by hitting the "cancel button. erik, it has been "canceling" for over an hour now.
actually i don't think it's canceling, syncing, or anything else; i think it's crashed but doesn't have the capacity to tell me it's crashed. am i wrong? what can i do about this? is there anything obvious here i can do to get this to work?
thank you very much for any help you have. my suggestion is that you write a brief guide for people, or ask someone to help you write one, that way there aren't so many crazy questions! :)
@ Maria:
I have the exact OPPOSITE thing :P
The media keys wouldnt work with itunes, but they do work with SB.
I read a lot of reports that people have problems syncing SB with their iPod classic 6th generation. I was wondering whether it works in general and only people with problems report. Could anybody please confirm that for them this ipod model syncs well?
@daniel2
I can tell you for a fact that ipod touch 2g is not supported on this, because iPod Classic 6th gen is based on the same new technology/syncing(genius support etc) I drought there will be support for it anytime soon..
Does somebody now if there's any Zune Device support extension for songbird? I'm looking for an alternative to the Zune software which doesn't s**k.
Doesnt seem to work with my 2nd gen shuffle :(
Doesn't seem to work with my 1st generation shuffle. I've tried putting it in disk mode. No luck.
More detail on the 1st generation shuffle. I'm on a Santa Rosa era MacBook, OS X Leopard. Apparently, Songbird is doing something because the light on the iPod flashes. It does that when there is a data transfer happening. The iPod never shows up in Songbird, however, whether it's in disk mode or standard mode.
hey, do any of the people who created this add-on still monitor this page? if not, does that mean there will be no future releases or changes made, like the artwork, etc.?
i love this add-on but obviously there are still a lot of questions about it.
i think erik is the main creator, and the last post by him was 10 mos. ago.... what's the status of this creation? is it still tooting?
absolutely stupid extension, no cover art support, no rating support
okay for anyone who's having the iPod duplicate problem all you have to do is go into iTunes and go into the iPod preferences and uncheck the box that says "automatically start iTunes when this iPod is connected." if you're still having problems then download that one plugin that annihlates your duplicates and that should take care of it.
Running rockbox, so my iPod 5G plays oggs, but the iPod extension refuses to sync ogg files. I get the error "Songbird encountered an error which resulted in 289 file(s) not being transfered [sic] to "iPod"." Is this a limitation of the plugin? I tried alternatively to use the USB mass-storage plugin, but it doesn't see the device at all (plus it hasn't been updated for months and thus I'm not even sure it works with 1.0.0rc2).
I see a comment above (from masteryoda) suggesting someone successfully synced oggs to a rockbox ipod, but I can't see how to do it.
Incidentally, same result as above when I attempt to copy ogg files to the device from Songbird rather than using the sync facility.
I've stopped using this because it screwed up all the music on the iPod. It especially trashed the cover art, which is a big feature in newer iPods. Not worth it.
I also had high hopes for using songbird for managing my Ipod, but artwork support not only is not working but also trashes the artwork database in my ipod classic. I wonder if the guys developing this particular addon read these posts and/or if they are doing something about it.
In case you are listening: I last tried ipod-3.0.11pre.848-linux-i686.xpi. Thanks.
i need some help.. i have an iPod Touch and it will not show up on the sidebar when i plug it into my computer.. can anyone help me.?
Can this or will it be able to copy Ratings back to Songbird from the iPod? My iTunes library file corrupted and I lost all my ratings, and with a 23,811 [yes twenty three thousand] that sucks. Hard. I'd like to sync with Songbird, but I REALLY don't want to rate all over again. I already did this before that last time iTunes lost my Library. It'd be a really nice feature if you could manage it.
sadly, whoever created this add-on is not visiting this page at all anymore. so don't bother posting questions, guys: it seems to only serve as a library now. there is no help. so much for updates. :(
incredibly disappointing.... this was one of the most favoured add-ons. so, hopefully songbird is not going the way of the dodo?
can you make it read sansa e250
please!!
rocks men,
good addon xD
is it possible to integrate movie formats (mp4, m4a) that work with an ipod into this?
Yet another cry of "album art on the iPod" please.
This is a good start for an addon. I have a few things I would like to see, which I wouldn't mind being involved to make happen. *hint hint* lol
1. Playlists are duplicated like crazy for me. (Some of my playlists show up as many as 4 times, all blank except the first one)
2. No Album Art syncs over, that's a big downer for me.
It's really amazing, but I have a very BIIIIIIIG request - can you do the same addon for iphone ?
iPod Nano 2g:
Rating:
Songbird -> iPod: OK
iPod -> Songbird: FAILED
Coverart:
Songbird -> iPod: FAILED
Playlists:
Songbird -> iPod: FAILED
WOW! I was so excited about Songbird and how I could finally quit iTunes. Then after I uninstall iTunes and get my entire collection on Songbird, I find out it doesn't support artwork on my iPod. That's ridiculous... this needs to be fixed ASAP.
Could you please integrate the decreasing/increasing-volume feature on iPod-songs as possible in iTunes?
Thanks.
Okay i tried syncing my ipod classic 160GB and all i can say is NNNNOOOOOO!!! i have all the album art work in my library in songbird so why don't it just port over like it would Itunes.....? any advice or fixes im using Ubuntu 8.10....(thats Linux for people in the dark)
I am currelnly using Songbird 1.0.0 on Windows 2Kpro, and a Ipod classiv 80gb 5 generation, but when i plug it in SOngbird wil not show it. A have tried to reinstal the addon.
Iāll add another request for album artwork. Thatās the big drawback. Also would love to see the smart-playlists synced (even if theyāre not āsmartā anymore once theyāre on my iPod). One other small thing Iād also like to see is eliminating all the Tās when I fast-scroll ā every time a song/artist/album begins with the word āTheā it gets sorted alphabetically by the next word, but the fast-scroll function brings up a āTā. Very annoying when Iām trying to find something. Overall though, Iām an iTunes hater (because it screws up metadata and is serious bloatware) and I'm glad to have a viable alternative, even if itās not polished yet. Thanks.
Also, video support would be nice, but Iām guessing thatās probably a much bigger issue with Songbird overall. Hopefully it will get integrated eventually.
I have an iPod mini and was disappointed to see it's not supported. The Nano doesn't have enough storage (I have an upgraded CF card in my Mini) and Touch costs way too much. I'm interested in finding out why the Mini and Photo models aren't supposed and would like to at least look in to working to add support myself.
wOw, its a great app & plugin.
I'm also a iTunes heater.
But something its going wrong with album artwork.
Thanks
Will this be able to support video in the future?
2nd gen ipod shuffle. songbird 1.0. Windows XP, and it does not work. I tried reinstalling everything, am i gonna have to go back to itunes? :(
I had the same problem with an iPod Gen 3 and songbird 1.0, XP SP3.
I tried everything from reinstalling to disabling other add-ons and it seems that there is a conflict with the MTP device support-Add on. Uninstalling or disabling that addon will help.
Now it works fine.
I have 2nd gen ipod shuffle, songbird 1.0 with Ubuntu v8.10. Songbird does not detect the ipod at all. I currently have Banshee working fine with shuffle. Hopefully this get resolve pretty soon, i like the interface of songbird
From Get Satisfaction: http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/ipod_lyrics_with_lyricmaster
iPod lyrics with LyricMaster
The LyricMaster plugin is great, and it saves the lyrics in the ID3 tag of the file. It would be great if the iPod plugin checks to see if there are lyrics in the ID3 tag and then marks that in the iPod db on transfer, so that you could see the lyrics on your iPod. Currently only saving the lyrics in the USLT frame of the ID3 tag doesn't display the lyrics on the device. A flag has to be set in the DB, so that the player knows which songs have lyrics associated with them.

I have an ipod video.
For others waiting for video support on this extension, I just discovered SharePod which is freeware that lets me upload videos directly to my iPod. (It apparently allows for tag editing directly on the iPod too, for those who are willing to go through and manually add album art.) Iāve only used it once so far, but it did the trick with the videos I uploaded. You can find it at www.getsharepod.com.
can we get smart playlist syncing support already? sure I can sync the music from them but i'd like to have the playlists visible on the ipod (even if they aren't smart).
Anyone having trouble with SB seeing 1st Gen itouch?
I couldn't get my Ipod Shuffle 2:nd gen to show up either, so I lurked around and found this:
"If one deletes the iPod_Control directory on the Shuffle, Songbird will recognize the iPod the next time that it is connected. So far, I haven't had any issues, and music transfers and plays with no issue."
Worked flawlessly for me.
Thanks for the tip...I unfortunately cannot access my iTouch thru my computer to delete that...Hopefully they figure it out soon...I like the software.
Hi
Fantastic Plug-in, but I'm having trouble getting it to work.
I've installed it from the songbird add-ons page, restarted Songbird but the iPod feature doesn't appear in the left pane, even if I plug my iPod in. Am I doing something wrong?
Seb
I have v 3.0.10.860 installed, and 1) it doesn't work, and 2) when I have this plugin enabled, upon closing Songbird, it crashes EVERY TIME - outputting this to the terminal:
process 12413: Attempt to remove filter function 0xb27580a0 user data 0xaf5e6d30, but no such filter has been added
D-Bus not built with -rdynamic so unable to print a backtrace
schwtyl@laptop /opt/songbird $
(crashreporter:12445): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_set_sensitive: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
I have disabled this plugin and everything works great...except iPod connection - but I don't really use that anyway. So just FYI
THIS IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYONES QUESTION, EVEN MINE :P:
WHY DOESN'T MY IPOD SHOW IN THE LEFT PANEL IN SONGBIRD
The answer is:
The iPhone, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle and iPod Touch don't have "hard drives" they have "flash media drives." So you can't put them into disk mode. Just the other iPods.

Hi,
I would like to know if an update to this extension, so that it can upload artworks and playlist on iPods, is under development or prevision ?
In spite of that, it's a great add-on. One of the most useful : I can uninstall iTunes :D
Hi there. Good work on the add-on, but I'm experiencing problems with coverflow and cover art in general. Coverflow works, but displays covers that do not match the records they were supposed to.
Also, when I'm on the albums menu, the half-screen on the right does not display covers like it used to. DB seems to have been somehow altered by Songbird, since the ordering of the albums has changed. I used to have 0-9 and symbols at the bottom of the list (after the letter Z), but now the list begins with those characters.
I don't know if this is reversible (I'm guessing not), but there should be a warning so users can expect side effects when managing their iPod within Songbird.
Aww, It doesn't support the new iPod Touch....
On ubuntu 8.10
Segmentation fault
Error console :
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIXPCComponents_Utils.import]" nsresult: "0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND)" location: "JS frame :: file:///home/olivier/Songbird/components/nsBrowserGlue.js :: <top_level> :: line 49" data: no]
... but after crash, works well (copy mp3 from HDD to iPod - it's OK !)
Just another comment hoping for support for the touch. Hopefully something will come up soon!
i can say goodbye to itunes
I just installed Song bird 1.0 on ubuntu 8.1 and I have a coby 1 gig mp3 player, My Ubuntu can see the device but how do i make songbird see it? is there a plug in i need for it? I tried downloading the Ipod device plug in, but everytime i download it, it stops and says not a valid plug in, can song bird work with my mp3 player? Thanks for any help
Thanks a million, no more itunes for 3rd gen ipod nano!!!!
Using this add-on can I transfer non-drm wma files from my hard drive to my ipod nano?
Thanks
Michael
does this work with the touch ?
Ok i see it doesnt just wondering i know nothing about code etc but "sharepod" can be used with the touch ipod is there away to merge this with songbird or share pods ability to work with the flash drive like a songbird sharepod etc
could this be used with songbird for a developer for touch ipod

Problem (pause, rewind, fast forward)
I am using this add on and it works but I have difficulty with large files. I am listening to some lectures that are are 30 minutes long. Around 30 MB in file size. When I load those files onto the i pod I can listen to them but some major features are missing.
I can't pause, rewind or fast forward.
I am using an i pod mini. Is there anything I can do? Smaller mp3 files (around 5 MB) work great with no problems at all.
Harry
"iPod Device Support" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Songbird build type (Linux_ppc-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.
Debian Lenny Powerpc
It won't let me use my iPod.
Do you know why it won't show up in Songbird? I use an iPod Touch 8GB with the latest software.
When will it sync my album art to my iPod?
yeah when will the album art problem be sorted??? removes all album art from my ipod nano 4th gen!!
Hi
I have the same problem as user harry12. When files are big, as in my case appr. 100 MB (listen to DJ mixes), I can't rewind or fast forward the file. Is there any chance to sort this out in a coming patch/release?
Regards
Beefy
This is the way to restore iPod Device Support's crash.
If there is no way you can restore this crash, you should delete this addon's setting files.
iPod Device Support's setting files(iPod.db and iPod~@devices.library.songbirdnest.com.db) exist at
~/.songbird2/~yourprofile~/db/
high hopes, lotsa perseverance, no results. spent most of 3 days trying to get it to recognize my itouch, really need this kind of functionality. read forums, (thanks for everyones info) load, unload, configure, wash/rinse/repeat. either it's unfortunately over my head or it unfortunately sucks.
it works weel with my iPod shuffle. I love this extension !
Great job
There is no album arts and lyrics viewing support on my iPod nano 3g.
This Add-on is still under development? Will these thing be fixed?
Or maybe me doing something wrong?
Does this support the iPod nano? I am thinking of buying a nano, and I use Linux only.
I really cant get it to work wit my Ipod Shuffle. I tried to follow this guide http://www.ehow.com/how_2157442_use-songbird-ipod-manager.html but step 3 didn't happen and step 4 i have no "Ipod" tab
like a few said above, I got my shuffle to work by simply uninstalling "MTP device support-Add on" which is one of the recommended add-ons now when you install Songbird. I'm sure someone will fix the conflict bug soon.
Now back to configuring my Ipod shuffle so I can ween myself from Itunes forever!
This isn't working for some reason,IT shows that its downloaded and installed but it doesn't show up anywhere. Some troubleshooting please!
So I was reading above and noticed the lack of compatability with the iPod Touch. I reliaed this and started to switch back to itunes, but iTunes wont open anymore. Is there something I need to do to the XML library file to get itunes to read it again?
I dont know if the developer reads this site, but mlipod http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/ now has support for iTouch with FW 2.x (experimental) without patching device.
It would be awesome if this was integrated, I would then be able to use something other than itunes on my mac :)
Does not work with ipodT 2g
I have an Fifth Generation iPod also known as iPod with video, I just installed the songbird with the addon for Fifth Generation iPod, but I can't watch my videos, am I doing something wrong?
Nice extension for sure. Synching works flawlessly with my 6th Gen iPod Classic 160GB. The only strange difference from synching with iTunes is that even though Songbird detects the album artwork embedded in the mp3's ID3 tags, when the files are transferred, the iPod doesn't see the artwork any longer. Not sure why this is, but still nice to be able to control the iPod.
it doesnt recognize my iPod touch, is it supported yet?
I've notice that since I synchronize my songs from songbird, they can't be played in the game Music Quizz 2 on the iPod. They are recognized, but no sound comes when it plays a song. I've got a 4th generation iPod nano, and it worked well with iTunes.
Does anybody have the same problem ? Do you think iTunes updates some other config file on when synchronizing with the iPod to allow MQ2 to play the songs ?
Thank you for your answers.
I am using The latest download versions of Songbird and the ipod plugin on openSUSE 11.0.
Songbird does not show my ipod shuffle. The iPod plugin in the addon list has the 'preferences' button greyed out. When I close Songbird with the ipod connected it reports: 'Waiting for device service to finish' and hangs.
When I run Songbird from a terminal, connecting the ipod generates the following error:
onDeviceEvent exception: TypeError: Ci.sbIIPDDeviceEvent is undefined at file:///home/madbadger/.songbird2/71vlv4yp.default/extensions/ipod@songbirdnest.com/components/sbIPDEventHandler.js, line 258
Any ideas what the problem is?
doesn't work.
songbird works fine until I plug in my ipod - then it freezes and I can't even kill the process. I have to eject my ipod and only then will it let me kill the process. If i plug in my ipod before I open songbird, then songbird won't even open up.
You guys absolutely must fix the problem with album artwork. Now that every iPod generation pretty much supports cover art, having this add-on not transferring the art makes it utterly pointless in my eyes. The iPod looks very ugly without the artwork. This is the only feature keeping me from using Songbird as my default media player. Until it's incorporated I'm going to stick with iTunes.
i agree with brand929, i brought this up a while back... really hope it gets fixed soon!! ipod needs the artwork...
I installed Songbird on Ubuntu 8.10 yesterday along with this extension. I really like Songbird so far, but I uploaded a couple files to my 30Gb Video iPod and the fast forward and rewind will not work. The file plays fine, but no time is displayed and worst yet if I pause it for too long the file starts over. Impossible for long files like audiobooks or the radio show I listen to. I hope this issue is addressed soon, or there is a fix out there already. Please help if you know a solution. Thanks!
Uhh I hope this gets updated soon because I'm getting an iPod and I sorta hate itunes...
This does not seem to work for the iphone. I hope iphone support will be added soon, using Songbird would be much better than itunes.
Works great with my iPod Shuffle 2G (1GB) :D. Unfortunately does not with my iPhone 2G (8GB) :( I do want to leave iTunes. It's a awful piece of software (iTunes, of course). Argh! :P Is there a roadmap for iPhone support? Todo? I'm using Mac OSX 10.5.6 Songbird 1.0.0 Ipod Dev Support 3.0.10.860
Album art plz plz plz.
Any information about when this will support ipod touch/iphone????
need to update to work with new Songbird version 1.1
Okey, although album art isn't supported yet it's good bye to Amarok and welcome to Songbird. Hope the album art issue is fixed very very soon because Songbird and its add-ons is absolutely fantastic!!!
please work on it!! We need the Album Art!!!
your plugin is really pissing me off!!!!!!!!!!!
i synced it ONCE and i have like half of it full with music like normal but there is also like 20 gigs of yellow! what did it do sync all of my DVD-R files too!? and now it wont mount and if i try to do anything, the whole program stops responding and when i try to run it again it says its already running so i have to restart. i got 3 of my like 7 videos to actually show up and they all said 0 seconds.
I really hate itunes and i havent yet used it with this ipod that i got through my warranty and i dont plan on it but damn man can you at least create a filter so that all my VOB files wont take up all that space?? im going to have to use my windows partition and use mediamonkey to do this, but i really like songbird. so please do something!!!
i love this addon since my itunes stopped working ( it gives some errors)
i restored the ipod's settings to default and then synced my earlier itunes library with my songbird and then put the songs in the ipod
there is one problem though. it does not display album art... also the lyrics do not show up in the ipod even though songbird displays that there are lyrics for all the songs
I'm having trouble with my iPod syncing. I just got it today and I plugged it in and I opened up Songbird and nothing popped up for iPod Syncing.
Do I have to plug my new iPod Nano into iTunes first before I can sync with Songbird?
Sorry, but what are you doing here?!
You want to be the new inovative and alternativ Media Player. So you're starting the development of songbird. All right, songbird is very nice and is a real alternative to itunes, winamp or amarok at the moment. The 1.0 release is very nice. And than: This shit. The only reason many people keep using iTunes instead of other media players is the ipod-support. So you had to add ipod support too to keep up with itunes.
But since 1 and a half year people are strongly complaying about this plugin, exspecialy the album art support. And what changed? Nothing. Not even a bit or byte was changed in this matter. Are you realy beliving that people want to use a plugin that only supports 30% of the ipod features but promising 100% in its name? No. Sorry. In this case i can't use songbird to manage my ipod anymore. And you really should change something about that. I can only give you 1 star for this "add-on"...
@dfonta try deleting the previous files that were stored in your iPod.
I had the same problem, and it was just old music taking up space.
Actually the best thing to try right now is to delete the "ipod_control" folder (or whatever it's called; it's something like that).
God I can't wait for album art, how could this be such a problem?
Like the Addon much. But not supporting cover-art is a disadvantage. Gladly awaiting cover-support so i will finally switch to songbird ;)
keep it up!
EVERYONE PLEASE VOTE FOR THIS BUG!!
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=12261
Then we maybe get luck and move it up to their must fix ladder!
Is there some way in which I can contribute to this project? I'd like to help by trying to program the extra feature into this addon...
Wow this is really fucking up now that it's "1.1 beta".
+1
Want iPhone support 8)

Vote here to get a new IPOD plugin. If everyone is voting for this bug they cant ignore it ;-)!!
Something is very wrong with this addon or songbird in beta. When I synchronize it with my library duplicate tracks start appearing in my library.
Also when I'm playing songs on songbird I can't scroll down to choose which playlists to synchronize.
Album art showing up on my iPod would be nice...
However... it would be A LOT nicer if tracks that I remove from my iPod with songbird would actually disappear from the darned iPod.
I have a 120Gb iPod classic. I have approx 15,000 songs on it. I have painstakingly sifted through many dozens of artists and albums to delete a large volume of songs from my iPod so I can re-import the same songs which I have spent a good deal of time re-tagging.
I just want my music to be properly tagged, named, genre'd, albumed, artisted, (arted.. hint, hint...) and such.
So I have gone into Songbird and deleted anywhere from a handful to a couple hundred songs at a time. I am always very careful to wait until all little busy indicators have finished in songbird and my iPod display before even moving on to the next set of files.
Sometimes the songs are really removed, sometimes they are not. They certainly disappear in the songbird interface quickly enough, but when i eject and disconnect the iPod, many of the songs are still there!
I do not see any predictable behaviour to this. I have tried just deleting ONE album. I have tried selecting songs with control and/or shift clicking tracks instead of using control-a. I have tried selecting multiple artists and albums and only single artists or albums. I have tried singing and dancing backwards 7 times around the iPod by the light of the full moon before attempting a remove operation... nothing seems to work reliably. I feel like I'm going crazy, but I keep trying, thinking that MAYBE all the tracks will disappear the next time.
Now, I have given up. I have found no answers via Google nor via the highly anemic getsatisfaction search tool for songbird's site.
This is my cry for help. Help me.
I don't want these songs on my iPod anymore.
I am desperate.
I am considering... wait for it... omg... installing ITUNES on my laptop. This is serious.
Maybe there's a simple solution I am oblivious to? I don't want to reformat my whole device.
Songbird is the ONLY app that has ever touched my iPod.
I am currently on Version: Songbird 1.0.0, Build 860 (20081124135419)
I am running Win XP Pro SP2
I have settings correctly set for my needs to "Manually Manage iPod"
I am a programmer by trade, and tend to be fairly app-savvy
I installed 1.0.0 because I was hoping it had cover art support (before I read the many displeased posts above.)
Help me get rid of my old poorly tagged and mixed up songs please so I can move forward in good faith and start complaining about lack of cover art for my iPod. ;)
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Just noticed a post above by boosterjooster dated '8 months ago' as of today, Feb 27, 2009.
boosterjooster states:
I canāt delete songs from my iPod..
On Songbird, it removes the song from the library but when I eject my iPod, theyāre still there. I plug it back in and the songs are still in the library.
This is very similar to my issue, except in my case, some songs disappear, some don't. Sometimes, usually with a small group selected, all disappear. Sometimes most disappear. Sometimes none disappear.
Huh.
boosterjooster . . . did you ever figure this out?
support . . . did anyone ever help boosterjooster?
anyone . . . know how i can get these tracks off my iPod successfully by using songbird and the iPod Device Support add-on?
I want to support this project by using this app. I am a fiend for things Mozilla. OSS is my favorite type of S. But this issue is really bugging me because Songbird is mismanaging file deletions and possibly not keeping my DB in sync with reality. My loyalty is beginning to crumble.
UPDATE!!! MY LOYALTY ACTUALLY DID JUST CRUMBLE! I KNOW CAUSE I FELT KIND OF 'CRUMBLY' INSIDE FOR A FEW MOMENTS AS IT OCCURRED!!!
I know this is a family forum and all, but WT#?!?
I plugged my iPod into my laptop. Songbird reported 3707 total songs. I checked via Windows filesystem using 'Properties' to check num of files under iPod Control / Music and Windows reported:
8277 Files, 50 Folders.
Something was wrong, obviously, but I went into Songbird and found that many of the songs I had tried to remove earlier that hadn't gone away... were in fact gone now! Hooray.
So I tried removing some MORE of the tracks Songbird never managed to remove... but whenever I clicked 'Remove' from the right-click context menu, the main display kept the tracks on screen sometimes and I had to switch genres to clear, then go back to the artist/album to see if tracks were gone... which they "were", along with the artist who no longer had tracks. Other times, the tracks "were" gone, but the artist stayed in the artist list, even with no tracks left on the iPod. Switching up genres once to force a re-render of the artist list did clear out the artist.
But wait... why is this other artist back now?!? WT#?!? Dozens of artists and albums have suddenly ***RE-APPEARED !!!***.
Yes, they dis-appeared for a while, then they came back like some sort of 80's hair band revival.
What is going on?
Perhaps I am going
after all.
I'm sure I am... positive in fact...
I know this because I am about to go to www.apple.com and look for the latest version of i'm-gonna-take-over-your-computer-Tunes.
Crazy. Not what I want to see in ANY app, free or not. This is a two-hundred fifty USD piece of equipment I'm managing. I am not wealthy and this device is treasured possession. I have countless hours invested in ripping my cd's, downloading tracks, meticulously tracking down cover art, tagging, tagging, tagging...
I shudder to think that Songbird and my iTunesDB file do not agree at any given time. What's going on in my poor DB?
Come on.
After I install iTunes, I'm going to look into how one can contribute to core code for this project or for this add-on, which ever is the culprit. Gonna try to be pro-active and positive... but I am going to get rid of these songs, even if I have to turn to the dark side....
( I probably won't really install iTunes, so you can breathe a collective sigh of relief now. I'll most likely find some other app that will accomplish what I need. That app should be Songbird, though. )
vote for this bug to raise the priority of touch/phone support in songbird:
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6389
MediaMonkey. Huh. Free Version. Not OSS. Oh well. At least I cleared the old tracks out. I'm thinking of trying to reinstall Songbird .7 to see if I can get back to a happy place with this software. Duplicate and triplicate tracks... disappearing and re-appearing tracks... frozen interfaces... no album art (which has suddenly appeared on some tracks I imported with MediaMonkey)... what's a guy to do? MediaMonkey. Closed up tight, not real community driven, but it did the trick. I will not give up on Songbird, but I do need something reliable for the time being. Think I'm going to download source code and start familiarizing myself with core code and add-on development. Hopefully the next posts I make will be more positive and pro-Songbird in nature.
Don't use software that doesn't work right unless you're willing to lose your data. Backup your libraries. Tag your files outside your iPod and save them so if you suddenly need to restore EVERYTHING, you don't need to go through too much work re-tagging when you do.
Just my advice. I have been a little shaken by my experience with Songbird 1.0.0 on my iPod Classic.
I hope not many others have had the same issues I have had recently.
For what it's worth, my thanks goes out to the Songbird and iPod Device Support developers. I like the product, but I believe it may need some redesign for a future version rather than enhancement. Keep up the good work. We, even those of us with problems with the SW, believe in the project and appreciate your efforts.
Hey I'm just curious does this allow Songbird to play M4a?
Now that I've downloaded this I can't get it to work.
When i put music on my Ipod nano, I don't have the cover and the lyrics... Is it normal?
Je n'arrive pas Ć voir les pochettes et paroles de musiques :(
keoshi say :
The LyricMaster plugin is great, and it saves the lyrics in the ID3 tag of the file. It would be great if the iPod plugin checks to see if there are lyrics in the ID3 tag and then marks that in the iPod db on transfer, so that you could see the lyrics on your iPod. Currently only saving the lyrics in the USLT frame of the ID3 tag doesn't display the lyrics on the device. A flag has to be set in the DB, so that the player knows which songs have lyrics associated with them.
I say :
The same!!! Please ;)
I assume the deletion bug hasn't been fixed for beta 2? I'm hesitant to connect my ipod.
After I upgraded to the 1.1 betas (this happens for all three of them) I have not had the same playback functionality as with the 1.0 release. I sync my iPod with iTunes at my home and when I am at work on the weekends I have Songbird installed here. Iconnect my iPod and use Songbird to play the music from it. This was really nice as I had access to all my music at work and did not have to bring anything else with me (an external HDD). But with the betas and when I connect my iPod and it is mounted I only have access to a fraction of my songs. Songbird sees that the iPod is full but when I go to the library I only see about 25% of the songs on it. I guess for now I will switch back to 1.0 but just thought I'd see if anyone else is having this issue as well.
How do I install the plug-in for my ipod? I hit the icon to install but I can't get it to work.
I think this would be a great add if it would work for me... I have an ipod nano from the first generation and nothing happens when I plug it in. Am I doing something wrong or is this device support only for newer generations?
please, album cover and song lyrics support!!
please!!
I think this is a great plugin and will me make to change from itunes if that's supported.
How I can sync only selected (checked) tracks (Not playlist) like itunes?
this is very important for me!
// sorry for my bad english
Vote here to get a new IPOD plugin. If everyone is voting for this bug they cant ignore it ;-)!!
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=12261
and
Cover and lyrics please!!!
Beware if you use this add-on. Songbird crashed while it was trying to read my 80GB iPod Classic, and when I reopened Songbird it was only seeing 250 out of 5000 songs, and only 1 out of 5 playlists that I keep on my iPod.
When I went to play my iPod in the car later, none of the songs or videos would play. Apparently my list of songs is still there but the songs themselves have been moved or wiped from my iPod. I have to use Recover My iPod to fish around for the songs that I got the last month or so that I haven't taken off yet, and it is a tedious chore.
No covers, no ratings, no play count, no lyrics. What a stupid plugin for an iPod.
Same thing happened with me... all the songs were wiped off from my 80gb ipod. i thought it was an accident so i loaded up more songs.. and then again when i checked there were none... authors please test the add-on for any technical bug. the previous version was fine, its just happening with the latest version..
I've got an old 30gb iPod video that Songbird borked for me yesterday. This add-on worked almost fine in the last version of SB, but this new one is messed up. At first I figured it didn't like my iPod because I have RockBox on it, but now I see other people who apparently just have plain ole iPods are having the same issue. How very inconvenient.
same deal here, crashed my 120 GB iPod. Songbird sometimes would crash itself, but this is the first time it has negatively affected the iPod.
before songbird... 6.9 gigs of music.
after songbird... 2.7 gigs of music
straying from itunes.... not worth the trouble.
Yay they took note of the troubles everyone is having!
Unfortunately I might have to switch to itunes temporarily...
very good!
I have a 2 GB Gen 2 Nano that I plugged in yesterday and songbird dropped about 2/3 rds of the music on the iPod. I guess I will hold onto iTunes to handle the iPod, love everything else about Songbird though.
Hi guys. My lovely lovely playlist of Sting tracks was rudely interrupted by Songbird telling me that the iPod support app was removing itself. Apparently it's deleting people's files?
Just to let you know I have all faith in the project - as long as every resource available is poured into getting this app up to speed. Without this app or CD burning I might as well go back to the Orwellian dystopia that is iTunes.
Please guys. Don't bail on me.
why isnt this installable???
i need help cuz i cant manage my ipod until the ipod device support is available,
and the "install" button is faded out and unavailable...
It's been withdrawn due to device-bricking bugs
dear my man papas
then how the fuck am i supposed to get song on my ipod.
is there a way out of this
wait for the men upstairs to fix it and proffer it again to our flailing bandwidths.
Alternatively, iTunes, if desperate.
If you only want file transfer then try ephpod. Transfers songs both ways.
o yea and um
is there a big difference between the 1.1 and the 1.0.0 version
god
fucking cock sucking dammit
pops i love you and all that man but
that ephpod shit that i just tried blew the whole archive
and yea man i wud be usin itunes instead but for some reason
its not installin, ive tried everything but yo thanks for all that tip
and um
around when do you think that 'install' button would become
clickable.
You could always try rockbox, but it's not for just transferring files. It'll change stuff, so you might not like it. For now I'd just use iTunes (gasp! terrible, I know) to transfer files.
why i not use the last version of songbird with me ipod classic, and addon not downloading or install (grey color of buttons)
Can you propose the installation of IPod Linux (when is compatible) on the next version?
songbird 1.1.1 cannot find my ipod nano
I'm using Songbird 0.6.1 with iPod Shuffle 3rd generation. Recognizes the iPod fine and music seems to transfer perfectly but the iPod won't play the music. It just tells me I need to use iTunes to sync music to it.
I'm sure that because it now supports playlists the organization is different than past shuffles.
they really need to update this for the new verison of songbird so i can use my ipod =[
I think that this add-on again puts Songbird on a level with iTunes, but in order to surpass iTunes iPod integration, I would really like to see some sort of method of picking what music goes on my iPod. I have a 30 gb iPod but my library is about 40 gb, and I have no efficient way of putting only what I want on my iPod, besides random tracks being omitted, which is pretty weak.
@raulZbengheci, you can make a playlist for synchronization with iPod, and say, can put high-rated songs on that playlist. It works like iTunes, actually, just there is no check-boxes, which in my opinion are not very useful either.
Maybe someone will invent a new way for it someday = ) everything is probably with songbird =)
Please add 3rd generation iPod Shuffle support. The iPod mounts wonderfully and shows up, and I can send songs to it, but when I plug in the headphones it doesn't think it has any songs on it.
Please, please, please add support for the iTouch. I was so excited about this and really want to ditch iTunes and Songbird seems to be the best replacement option out there. What, oh what can be done about this?
Yes and iphone 3g support under Linux. That would be great!
Does anyone else have a problem where a large number of duplicate tracks appear on your iPod (I'm using an 80 gb classic). I have no idea why this happens, even after they fixed one of the bugs with the addon. This has been happening since the 1.1 betas.
I'm with nlu re: iphone 3g support.
I've been having the same issue as rolans (i also have an 80gb classic). It seems like it copies files that are in playlists as if they are separate songs from the ones in the library which leads to a lot of duplicates (in my case). Also, I agree with others about the necessity of support of album artwork. And there seems to be some issues with the alphabetization because, when I scroll quickly, it seems to recognize artists beginning in "The" as "T"'s yet still organizes them as songbird does (The Beatles under B, etc.). Otherwise great add-on and thanks for the update!!
I have had two problems with the ipod addon in the newest version to date (26 march 09)
1- It sometimes duplicates songs to my ipod which aren't duplicated in my library. My temporary solution is to use the exorcist addon in the ipod library to remove these. This works fine for now but I'd love to see this fixed.
2 - Smart playlists don't update track listings on the ipod. On the first sync of a smart playlist the tracks are added. As the playlist updates the playlist does not get updated on the ipod.
iPod/iPhone needs to be sorted in open source fully... It is a shame it is such a struggle...
Hopefully some nice millionaire will sue apple for aiming to create an uncompetitive monopoly.
Please put cover and lyrics!!!!
I'm using a nano
Cover... and lyrics!!!
This is awesome, does it convert unsupported iPod formats like .flac to something supported when syncing?
duplicates checking is seriously needed, Sync is useless without it.
Even with drag and drop it screws up, so each time I add a new song to my favorites playlist, I have to delete all the songs and recopy or remember which ones I added and drag them over one at a time.
This is tedious and frustrating to say the least!
I'm running Ubuntu Jauntu Jackelope (beta) and unless I've missed something, it didn't recognize my iPod. :/
@raynedanser : I'm on Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 and it's working fine... Wait an update or an oficial version of Ubuntu Jauntu Jackelope.
Cover and lyrics :p
@Jerome - That's what I was thinking - waiting for the official release. ;-) In the meantime, I can use Rhythmbox to update the pod. ;-)
@raynedanser : Yes, and GTKPod ;) Rhythmbox can manage the cover and lyrics on IPod?
@Jerome - Honestly? I hadn't tried for art or lyrics only because I have an older iPod, so I wouldn't see the cover art. I keep it docked in my kitchen (for now, it's old and tired), so it doesn't go far anyway. ;-)
why the version for songbird 1.1 does not support ipod nano 2g?
This cause me to still use sb1.0 :(
@acuttin : My nano 2g 4Go work perfectly on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex with Songbird 1.1.1
Vote here to get a new IPOD plugin!! Show them how important this plugin is...
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=12261
and
I think there's a pretty severe bug currently with this plugin. Crazy amounts of duplicates are generated when synchronizing with the ipod.
Please check out bug: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15683, and vote!
Still having duplicates after the update. Do the developers even listen?
Cover and Lyrics please!
How do I get this to work with my iPod Shuffle? Does it not work with the shuffle? It's not showing up at all.
My Ipod shuffl 2gen is not working at all
One more time:
Album art and song lyrics please, please, pleasee!!
This did not work for me at all.
I have a green 2GB iPod Shuffle from december 2008.
Looks like Songbird does not even detect it.
It works okay with gtkpod though.
PROBLEMS SEEM SOLVED FOR ME!
I updated to songbird 1.1.2, have messed around a lot with my ipod (using monkey media, rockbox...) all to return to songbird to sync my iPod. On returning I "reset to factory settings" and renamed my iPod Torvalds ;) which must be the secret password because now...
1- Songs no long duplicated. I've check with the exorcist plugin and my iPod library has no duplicated.
2 - Smart playlists update as I update them!
I'm not sure if this will always work but it's working for now!
Requests
Album art sync
Podcast support and sync
I take that back :(
Though it looks like problem 1 is solved for me (duplicate tracks) problem 2 (smart palylists) don't getting properly updated
Oh well...
Ok you know what? Fuck this!!!! MediaMonkey PWNZ Songbird for iPod support. Songbird crashes and all. MediaMonkey DOES support album art and when they release 4.0 it will support videos and pictures too. I'm just going to install VMWare and program MediaMonkey to start up with windows. Thanks to the uploader of XP Pro Performance Edition (isohunt.com) for the fast bootup. So now i say farewell. I'm sorry this one plugin ruined Songbird. It is a great program in theory, but it just doesn't do what i want it to.
I can't get my iPod to show up in Songbird, how do I get it to appear and sync? Thanks.
My iPod is a 4th generation Nano if that helps at all.
I have a 5G 30 gig. I have decided to start using Floola to put music on my Ipod because of Songbird issues, but I am now noticing that Songbird doesn't see all the music properly on my Ipod. For the record Itunes and the ipod see it fine, so its not Floola.
For the record if Songbird developers could come up with a kick ass ipod solution with features like floola has, i would pay for that plugin. Floola pushes your ipod track history to Last.fm, syncs your ipod wit google calender (wish it did contacts too), converts songs thats arent supported (like flac and ogg), and will convert embedded album art to work on the ipod.
People hate iTunes but feel like they are stuck with it because of the iPod. Songbird can deliver freedom. Its nice to install something that doesn't install a software updater, Mobile device support, bonjour, ipod support, oh and a helper. And the fact that songbird supports all OS's.
Please give us freedom of choice, cause if you work perfectly we will spread the word like we did with firefox and make you a must have app on any system. But I cant recommend you because everyone has an ipod!
A week ago, i synched my Ipod Classic 120gb, worked finde (albumcovers still missing).
Since 3 days I try to synch it again, but it won't show up in Songbird. I use Ubuntu 8.10 and Linux notices the iPod and I can use it through Nautilus.
But I want to synch ^^.
I wanted to see if it scrobbles to Last.Fm, as it did as I used Itunes. In addition to that I wanted to know if, ratings changed on the iPod change the ratings in my library (as it should)
So... I think I have to wait to get to know these things :( :(
My iPod Nano 4th generation is recognized by Songbird and it syncs with it fine, but the songs/playlists don't show up on my iPod? When I plug my iPod in, Songbird says I have all the songs/playlists on there, but every time I disconnect my iPod restarts (select language, etc.) and then says it doesn't have any songs on there?
If anyone can help me out with this, I'd greatly appreciate. Thanks.
downloading and checking if works on my ipod shuffle :O
Sharepod works with Touches, so it can be done... :(
Good Job, Thanks!
It is completely buggy here. Deleted all songs in my iPod. Doesn't seem to support drag'n drop after choosing manual sync. Trying to fool it using a Smart Playlist which has all the songs doesn't work either. I don't know what else to do.
Using version 3.0.12.1028 in Songbird 1.1.2 running on Ubuntu 9.04.
Works with bare functionality. Cover art does not transfer and ratings and play counts do not sync to my knowledge. They are transferred one way to the iPod.
Arggg can someone please help me out? I own a itouch and I cannot get it to sync with my songbird library. I doesn't even show up at all. Can someone please help me out?
I have managed to get my son's iPod Touch rev 2.2.1 to mount in the filesystem using ifuse. Exaile picks it up and displays the database and so does Gtkpod but Songbird will not. I have reinstalled this extension a couple of times but nothing shows at all. How does the extension look for the ipod? Any solutions to this?
This isn't working! It still won't give me a option to sync my ipod... What am I doing wrong???????
Using Songbird 1.1.2 with the iPod device support causes all of the playlists on my iPod to break. Songs get deleted and rearranged, etc. I like Songbird over iTunes, so I would love for this plugin to mature.
yet another desperate plea for album art. pwease! my nano is just no fun without it, and i really, really, really despise having to fire up the ol' iTunes. thank you!
solved!
ipod suffle 1gb (second generation)
ubuntu hardy
ok finally it syncs and everything, before it would be recognized by the system but not by SB.
What I did was open the ipod with nautilus and delete everything and of course flush the toilet (Trash). After that SB could recognize it, but I thought it was convenient to click the RestoreFactorySettings button so I did. Mounted again and it's ready to go.
Probably it was solved before but couldn't find it so here it is.
PS: not sure if this would work with a different ipod model.
Thanks Mrcoz. Your Ipod shuffle trick worked for my 1gb shuffle as well. Didn't need to restore factory settings.
Hey I love Songbird and the concept it stands for. I've dled and used it during beta and during release. But honestly if you can't get full iPod support onto the player it is just too frustrating for listeners to stick with Songbird. I tried to stick with SB during release for a while, but when it came to getting to syncing my iPod, I just had to let go, and then I found myself just having iTunes open all the time once again.
You guys need to get this addon working 100% or else people won't be sticking with SB.
Another plea for Album art support!!! Does anyone know where this stands in the development queue? Or does someone know any easy workarounds in the meantime? Otherwise it's looking like installing virtualbox on my daughter's laptop with XP and iTunes to make her happy. :-(
Just downloaded the latest songbird (for windows) and tried installing this add-on, unfortunately it's not compatible:
iPod Device Support 3.0.13.1120 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Songbird 1.1.2
This add-on is fine for playing songs from your ipod, but it it horrible at syncing. I had to delete my entire library (on an ipod classic), because songbird screwed up the album art, playlists, etc.
Just use sharepod instead.
Great add-on.
But please support: Album Artwork. That would be great.
thak you very much
I have and iPod Shuffle SEcond Gen, And the first time i run Songbird with this addon work perfect, but it was just that time now i dont get nothing, don't recognize my ipod what can i do?
Excellent. Syncs faster than iTunes on my ipod shuffle. Nicely designed.
Songbird doesn't recognize the I-Pod (nano). What to do???
Cover and lyrics please!
You're only updating for new versions :-(
thanks you very much
Does it work with the new OS3? (iPod touch)
Hi love the addon, but this is another request for album art & m4a support for my ipod classic
Really would appreciate support for OpenSolaris!!
:)
Thnx. Good work! I will use songbird AND iTunes.
iPod Touch 1G
iPhone original
iPod Touch 2G
iPhone 3G
iPhone OS: 3.0
Thanks for writing the add on! It really looks sleek.
One thing that is making the soundbird almost useless for me is the lacking rating sync with the iPod.
Please could you add it? Just let the latest change to propagate.
Until it is available I will have to stay with Amarok. Which does not support real dynamic smart playlists. :-( but that is another story.
Please make an update for iPod Touch. I plug my ipod in and it doesn't show up.
Is the iPod Touch not supported? I have the same problem. The Options button in the add-on is not active which I think must mean that it is not detecting my iTouch.
So, I'm looking for some release notes that describes what's changed and what's new... am I missing something here for this new version released for Songbird 1.2?
Hi, I'm using Ubuntu, I love SongBird and this addon it's amazing, but I think that the album art is one thing that can make this addon a real iPod addon.
Doesn't work for me. (80Gb Classic on Win XP). It reads the iPod and starts to mount it but then my CPU jumps to 100%. Task manager says Songbird IS still responding however, after 25 min its only managed to read approximately 1300 out of 8500 songs. Is this normal?
I have this plug in, I plug in my 80GB ipod classic on windows 7 and NOTHING happens. I mean, I get the auto play pop up from windows. But this add on does absolutly nothing.
Doesn't detect my iPod Shuffle (2nd Gen, commonly known as the 1 before the latest)
Also (sorry for double post, doesn't seem to be an edit button for comments) I'm using Windows 7 so that may have something to do with it.
ŠŠ°ŠŗŠ¾Š½ŠµŃ-ŃŠ¾!
I have a brand new iPod 120 Gb Classic. It took ages to get it synchronized, supposedly finished the entire sync. However, then, when I tried to play it later--even though the iPod shows that here are 7543 Songs on it, I could never find anything on the player.
Whoa, corrupts my playlists severely. I did a lot of playlist management in Songbird yesterday. Added tracks to playlists, deleted albums. Some of the changes saved, others didn't. Left me with a huge mess.
Don't try to edit playlists on your iPod from Songbird.
Does anyone know if album art for the ipod will be supported anytime soon?
Hi everyone.... I'd tried to use this application but didn't work out.... I got an Ipod Shuffle and Songbird didn”t reconigze him... please help!!
Thanks!!
Love Songbird and love this addon, offers great functionality! Have been using for quite some time but this latest version doesn't seem to do what the previous has!!
I have a friend with a Mac formatted ipod and have Songbird installed on my Windows PC, I updated both Songbird and iPod Device Support there a while ago but now it won't correctly read and mount the iPod, telling me that i need to format it!???
Well it syncs my songs and appears to work alright but my iPod won't play any of the songs or even browse through them. I have an older iPod Classic 80GB... Any suggestions?
My main gripes with this plugin are:
1. Playing from the ipod does not support loading covers and other data from the ipod (like lyrics)
2. Syncronizing the ipod does not support, again, covers and extra data.
3. I used it once, just to play content from the ipod, and for some reason the covers from the ipod were removed. I had to resync with itunes to get them back. (I don't remember trying to syncronize from songbird on that ocasion)
And finally, will there be a 1.3 compatible version anytime soon? I am trying songbird 1.3
And is there any way to contribute to the plugin?
Nothing happens for me. I'm on Vista with just Songbird installed, no iTunes. When I plug my iPod in, Windows recognizes it, but Songbird doesn't make a peep.
For some reason Songbird doesn't recognize songs with foreign characters (in my case, Russian and Japanese). The normal library shows them, but the iPod one doesn't (even if the songs ARE on the iPod) and when I try to sync the iPod, Songbird erases those songs. It's pretty frustrating D:
Songbird 1.2.0.1 for Fedora 11 DOESN'T work when I try to listen to a song from my iPod. I've installed the iPod add on for Songbird, I have managed to see the device with Songbird, then I wanted to listen to a song from my iPod with Songbird, but Songbird has crashed itself. It says that Songbird requires a demuxer plug in to try to play the iPod. I've installed the ID3 demuxer, but nothing happens, and I still have the same problem.
does it support touch os 3? my ipod doesnt show up. help?
Doesn't seem to support touch OS 3. My ipod touch 2nd gen isnt detected.
For the 3rd generation iPod Shuffle,
with the "Delete the iPod_Control folder" method, makes it be recognized in songbird.
But after sync, it will not play, only repeat "Please use itunes ot sync music to this ipod" voice notification.
Only if you sync it with iTunes...
then again, the iPod can't be recognized by songbird any more...
------------
And, it seems that MediaMonkey & Rythmbox have both faced this issue, and solved, now both works perfect with new iPod Shuffle.
Maybe some update needed...?
http://8.12.32.67/songbird/topics/shuffle_please_use_itunes_ot_sync_music_to_this_ipod
For those of you who are saying it won't recognize ipod touches, I think it is mentioned in the songbird features that anything beyond regular ipod or msc devices are not yet compatible.
I just installed songbird on my mac os x 10.5 leopard operating system, and I tried downloading the mac intel version 3.0.14.1190 and when I go to songbird add ons and try to instal it I get this message "iPod Device Support 3.0.14.1190 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Songbird 1.2.0." but it says in more than one place that this update should be compatible with version 1.3 of songbird.
Am I doing something wrong?
Nevermind.
I tried accessing the add ons site from songbird and downloading this add on from there, and it worked fine.
iTouch 1st Gen (8Gb) Running Pwned 3.0.x Firmware
After installing itunes to get the correct driver in and seen songbird now sees my ipod and sees the avalible free space, however it fails to sync and fails to see battery life or %charged on the battery
Whats working for me
Sees Ipod (Only detected on a reboot of songbird, Ipod has to be plugged in as SB loads)
Eject works
Information and reporting free space works
Whats not working
Syncing anything
Reporting batter levels
Its better support than what was available a while ago thanks SB team. If we could add an SSH client to SB all jailbroken iPod touches/iPhone devices could have sync through that..
Anyone who got their album artwork messed up, there's a way to get most of it back and fixed:
Go to iTunes with your iPod plugged in, click on your iPod on the sidebar, go to the "Music" tab at the top, and uncheck the box that says "display album artwork on iPod" or something like that. Click "apply", let it delete all the artwork, then go back and check the box again, click "apply", let it optimize all the album artwork, and it should be back, at least most of it.
I am using the ipod touch with Songbird 1.3.0.b1. I have installed iPod Device Support 3.0.14.1190.
I have plugged in the ipod but nothing happens in Songbird. I can't see the device.
iTunes is starting instead.
Is the ipod Touch support yet in the iPod Device Support, or am I doing someting wrong.
I found it's all about the file "iTunesStats" under the folder.
If delete it, the shuffle can be seen in songbird.
And let iTunes rebuid this single file, the shuffle can play normally, with new sync songs...
--For the 3rd generation iPod Shuffle,
--with the "Delete the iPod_Control folder" method, makes it be recognized in songbird.

Great add on! It would be nice to have an option to disable showing the iPod library in the main Library...
It takes hours to mount the iPod, even after having done it a few times. I have tried some different builds of songbird, nightly builds and old versions, and the result is the same. Please, could we get an update that works for everybody? I'll gladly provide some logs or *something* if someone tells me where I should find them.
Running latest songbird (1.2.0.1146) with latest plugin (3.0.13.1146) on
Windows Vista Home Premium x64
Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (2x2.4 ghz cores)
4 GB RAM
Sorry, forgot to add that I'm using a 120 GB classic iPod. I can't for the life of me recall what generation that is.
Evidently other 3rd party apps (rockbox, etc.) are having troubles with 6th generation iPods (which I own).
Can anyone confirm that this add-on does NOT work with such iPods?
While it does take literally hours, Songbird does seem to think it works. My iPod disagrees.
@sjaor. it takes an hour or two for me too. but eventually it works. originally i thought it was frozen, but while it takes a long time (i'm assuming cause we have big ipods....mine is 160GB almost full), it will eventually complete and be able to sync.
still my only problem is that there's no album art support. that's the one feature that i think would make songbird PERFECT (for all the supported ipods anyway. as i uderstand ipod touches and iphones aren't supported but i could be wrong).
It's not working :'(
Running 32-bit Songbird 1.2.0 build 1146 under Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 (the 64-bit build crashes out), and it says about this extension:-
""iPod Device Support" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Songbird build type (Linux_x86-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem."
I had to post. Loving this addon! I've been having trouble finding away to sync my ipod classic 120GB and now I can. Thanks
this isn't working for my songbird, when I connect my ipod touch, nothing shows up on the side.
Great add-on, but two things don't work for me. First: I can transfer playlists from songbird to my ipod but they aren't shown in the correct place in its alpabeticallist of playlists. They are always added at the very end, which is not really good. Second: The tracks in this playlists are correctly sorted (by tracknumber) in songbird, but always alphabetically on my ipod.
Besides this it's nice to have a way to put my music to my ipod in Linux.
My config: Ubuntu 8.10 + Songbird 1.2.0.1146 - iPod Support 3.0.13.1146 + ipod 3G (Video) 30 GB.
Since my itunes has caused me nothing but grief upon the recent ver. 9 update, ie deleting ALL my metadata, i have finally decided to give up on apple, they are useless & THE most unhelpful and impossible company to contact ever!!
I am liking this new player & I am pleased that ipod isn't just tied into itunes now, which was the only reason i kept using it.
I do have one question tho....if I plug in my ipod & update it with Songbird's library, will all my played songs on the ipod be scrobbled to my Lastfm account? I know from experience that Lastfm Scrobbler didn't always find the songs I had played, so I came to rely on iSproggler, which never let me down. Unfortunately iSproggler doesn't have an option for recognising Songbird.
I listen to more music on my ipod than on my laptop & just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be losing any playcounts on lastfm
Overall I am happy with this extension as it was the final straw that allowed me to uninstall itunes.
However some small nitpicks I noticed in using it:
I am fine with no album art at the moment, but I am noticing on my 120gb ipod classic that some albums are showing art, but it is never for the correct album (eg. Arcade Fire will have album art from Soundgarden)
When scrolling there is no acceleration as you make your way through the alphabet, it makes it quite a chore to get from A-Z when you are looking for something particular.
Anyways, keep up the good work, it is appreciated.
This has stopped working on my mac, with an iPod nano 3g. Wont show up in the menu just like uwenna says.
Unfortunately, latest 1.40 beta w/iPod addon also has stopped working for my iPod Nano 3G as well for some reason, as the others have posted here today. :(
how do i put my ipod on here to load music onto it?
It works fine and my iTunes is gone! Thanx a lot for this :) ;)
Only one problem: My songs played on the iPod are not scrobbled to my last.fm account :(
Songbird 1.2.0 (Build 1146), IPod Device Suppot 3.0.13.1146
Anyone successfully connect their Palm Pre? Songbird doesn't see mine.
i have the device support but it doesnt detect my ipod i have a ipod nano 2nd generation how can i do it?
I'm having problems with the plug-in.
I've got an 30GB 5th gen iPod. It connects to Songbird and is displayed.
But when I browse the library, half my songs are missing.
But if I search via the text box (in the top right corner of songbird), it finds the missing songs.
It's not listing anything after Wolfmother - and I have lots of artists beginning with X,Y,Z.
It also seems not to list any tracks from artists where I only have one track by that artist.
The full contents of the iPod are listed correctly when I view it using iTunes or Winamp.
hi! ,does it support my ipod shuffle 2g?
For those having connection issues; I have found that I have to sometimes disable, then enable the add-on to get my mini to show up. It may work for others having issues with their iPod not showing up.
Still running Jaunty and it's not recognizing my iPod. First, it never recognized my ancient 4th Gen Mini and NOW it doesn't recognize my brand new 3rd gen Shuffle.
Is this ever going to be consistently fixed?
HW: Ipod NANO (2ndGen) 8GB ( 1.1.3 - MA497)
SW: (Songbird 1.2.0, Build 1146 (20090616030100)
Condition: iPoo not showing up in Songbird ( no cable issue )
Does this Add-on work with Vista? i have tried and tried to download and it does not seem to be available anywhere...
update: me MAC 10.6
just a quick suggestion;
Could you please make it possible to show 'syncing xx of xx songs' when its syncing? just so we know whereabouts its getting to & also is it possible to to have a little sound alert as to when the ipod has completed syncing?
again, great little app, finally i can delete itunes yay =]
any news on when ipod plays will be scrobbled to lastfm yet?
does this support ipod touch?
please answer if you can...
and does anybody else have this problem with their ipod touch/itunes?:
itunes says that it cannot sync with the device and that the disc cant be written to
if you do have this prob and you kno the solution or where to find it, please, do tell!
Songbird doesn't see my ipod anymore once I updated to 9.10 Ubuntu.
@ my last post:
Confirmed this problem. I downgraded back to 9.04 Jaunty, and Songbird again recognizes my ipod. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that "getdeb" doesn't list a 9.10 Songbird version, hence, I had the wrong Songbird installed while running 9.10.
Seconded with Ubuntu 9.10 - I'm running Songbird 1.2.0, Build 1146 (20090616030052) on AMD-64 bit - I think it's from the mozilla-daily ppa
It's not working properly with my iPod Touch 32GB.
Songbird find it in system, but shows that has only 650MB memory and doesn't see songs already on it.
Do you need to have itunes installed for this add-on to work?
I have Songbird setup to sync with iTunes, only from Songbird to iTunes (not a 2-way sync). However, it seems that duplicates of the songs in my smart playlists are created in iTunes when Songbird syncs with Tunes (and possibly an additional duplicate each time it syncs - some of my smart playlists in iTunes now have 4 duplicates!). Please help! Love Songbird, thanks for your support.
I've tried all different combinations of songbird/ipod plugin versions and none of them work with my new ipod nano 5th gen, but all of them work with both my nano 2nd gen and a friends ipod mini. Is this a known bug that it doesnt work with the new versions of ipod? It says it has an unknown file system or something like that.
I thought this was supposed to support Generic USB devices? It says so up above but when I installed it I just get a grayed out Preferences button and it appears to doing nothing at all. I uninstalled it because it seems to be useless.
Not the first useless Songbird add-on I've tried and to be truthful it seems more and more like Songbird is only useful for Windows users now.
People are probably wasting their time posting here as it appears no staff member has even commented in about 1 year...
Hey thanks for all the hard work you guys put into this plugin!
I know Apple keeps making *my* music files on *my* iPod harder for 3rd party apps to read, thanks for sticking with it. I really appreciate not having to use that crapware called iTunes!!
--iPod Classic 80GB owner, Linux user, brand new Songbird convert.
I've tried this with my first generation ipod shuffle and it doesn't always work. I once got it working by deleting the iPod_Control folder on the shuffle, but I've tried that again with no success. I'm using Songbird 1.2 and Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic.
Banshee and Rhythmbox support for both my ipods (1st gen. shuffle and 4th gen video) are great, especially in Banshee.
I FOUND A WAY TO SCROBBLE YOUR IPOD =]
http://www.last.fm/group/audioPod/forum/46979/_/280523
or the direct link
http://www.lastpod.org/
download this app & hey presto, no more losing ipod plays =] absolute GODSEND as 90% of my music is listened to on my ipod!!
now.....if only ratings could be synced back from the ipod into songbird.....hmmmm.....
3.0.15.1335 sync doesn't work with songbird 1.4. I'm getting error transcoder not available. iPod Video 5th gen. :(
I'm having trouble with this. I formatted my Ipod, but I still can't get Songbird to pick it up. Is there some specific way I'm supposed to access the Ipod? It's a 2nd gen 1gig shuffle.
Hi, I would want to translate this article plugin to the Russian language. Please tell me your email, simply reply to fatcoow@gmail.com. Thanks, Marcis Gasuns.
I have a 1st gen Nano, using Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, and I've figured it out!!
The partition on your iPod has to have a volume label of "IPOD" (without the quotes of course)
You can do this in Ubuntu 9.10 by simply plugging your iPod in and waiting for your ipod to automatically mount. Then go to the desktop and right click on the icon for your ipod and click "unmount" (NOT eject or safely remove)
Now go to System>Administration>Disk Utility and open that up. You will see the device listed as "Apple Ipod" in the list on the left. You need to left click on the partition that is on your Ipod. There might be some empty space before it but this is normal, don't touch that part.
Now you can change the "Label" to "IPOD" (without the quotes) and hit the "Change" button.
Now close that program and unplug your ipod.
Plug it back in and wait for it to mount, then open Songbird.
It should prompt you what your ipod is called.
*note) If you formatted your ipod, erasing everything on it, you may need open up rhythmbox before all of this and initialize your ipod. I'm not sure if this plugin handles this or not.
The above worked for me, but your mileage may vary. I hope I helped someone!
I use the 80gig Ipod. I was having some trouble getting songbird and linux to recognize it. It was formated for windows. After about an hour or so of reading forums and how to's, I stumbled on one that worked for me. first off just connect your ipod to the computer, then log out and log back into linux. on the desktop you should see your ipod if you do right click and format it, a window will pop up saying something about loosing all the info on your ipod, click sure. after i formatted it i unplugged my ipod and restarted it plugged it back in and then opened up songbird, it recognized my ipod and I was able to rename my ipod and sync it with songbird.
sdfvasv
Is there some kind of description or help guide that gives us an ideal way to sync your ipod? I can't sync my ipod video 5th gen without getting a couple duplicate songs. I'm on vista sp2 with songbird 1.2. I made sure iTunes didn't come up this time around and that seemed to make LESS duplicates, but there are still some there. How is it that they haven't addressed this problem? I've read many forumns and things from years ago that talk about the same bug.
ps great work though I appreciate everything immensely
QuiggityBiggity,
same here :( It's really anoying. I have 2354 songs in my local library and synced ipod has 2532 :) Maybe songbird goes crazy 'cause some of my files are flac?
I recently switched over to Songbird with this add-on and sync'd it with my ipod. Sync'd fine but my volume randomly goes up and down during a song. Is this a bug or just a coincidence (like hardware related)?
i currently have songbird 1.5.0a? The ipod device support addon seems to be not compatible. Where can I get a compatible version/what do I need to do in order for it to work? I'm running Ubuntu 9.10
Ok. Using my method or Michaell's method only makes it work once. Then you have to format it all over again to get it to recognize the ipod, then sync again.
I'm growing weary of this and I would definitely help fix it if I had the free time. Unfortunately that isn't the case so I'll have to continue using Amarok to sync with my iPod. I hope this feature gets some major attention as I like the look and feel of Songbird but I'll be waiting a while before using it as my main player due to this one problem..
Hi, i need some help, i try to use Michaell's method but doesn't work for me, now is worst, i don't know what file system applied the format method, because now doesn't appear on my desktop. the ipod appears on disk utility, but i can't format the i'pod. Some one can help me. I'm using Ubuntu Karmic and have a second generation ipod suffle. I can't sync my library and the ipod. Thank's
Do you know what would be 100% AMAZING?!?!?! If songs from your local music library that contain lyrics could be synced to your iPod WITH the lyrics in them. That way we can read our songs lyrics on our iPods.
That would be GREAT if you could do that for us! I have read a forum online about someone else wanting this feature too.
Thanks!
You know, ignore my last comment about the volume issues. Turns out my headphones were on "noise cancellation" and the battteries were dying. I 'm an idiot.
Props to brandonmpace.
That helped me get my 9.10/iPod's/Songbird1.2 all happy again.
Cheers, bud.
As ever, I posted too soon...
I now realise that if I eject, and re-connect, it stops working. And then saw the later posts.
Tweaking the volume label (again) seems to get it working again. That'll have to be my workaround for now.
But, at least it's working (of a fashion) - so better than it was!
I am unable to manually manage my 1gb ipod shuffle. I can sync it okay but i cannot remove or add songs to it even though i have it set to manually manage music.
this was not a problem until i upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium x64 from Windows 7 RC x64 about a month ago. I have tried reinstalling both the addon and Songbird itself to no effect.
Please give me some help on this.
it wont reconize my 3.0 itouch 2 gen help
Porfavor un buen samaritano que programe soporte para iphone, es por la unica razon que sigo utilizando la lacra de Windows, si funcionara iphone en songbird ya solo tendria que usar Ubuntu.
very good
Need an update for the ipod touch 3gen.. Just bought it and cant transfer my library....
I'm having the same problem with my nano4g being detected.
When Songbird can see the ipod, and I write any changes to it, the ipod then displays no music. When I plug it in and check the files, they're there. If I plug it into a machine running iTunes, it tells me the ipod database is corrupt.
The fixes involving re-labeling the partition as above don't do anything. Restoring the ipod from iTunes works in that Songbird can then at least see the ipod, until such time as it's ejected.
About 50% of the time "eject" from within Songbird does nothing - no visual feedback in SB or on the ipod.
I've tried using the latest nightly build just to see if anything got changed - no difference.
I've tried using rhythmbox instead - it sees the ipod fine and shows that the problem isn't my ipod :)
This add-on doesn't seem to be working. Nothing has shown up after I've installed it and restarted and even when I plug my Ipod in nothing happens. Is there some way I have to access it in order to put music on or am I just making some stupid mistake?
Ubuntu 9.10 really screws up iPod support in everything but Rhythmbox. I've been able to work around it by unmounting (not ejecting) the iPod and then remounting it. Banshee and Songbird will then detect it. Main problem I'm having with Songbird, is that it's not hashing the files for the iPod Database. I can fix it by using gtkpod to fix the DB after Syncing. Small annoyance, haven't had to do that in almost 2 years on Linux. Just figured out how to get it working so haven't had a chance to check other things like playcounts and rating syncing back, but fingers crossed.
I love it, but I'd like to see additional functionality that the iPods support, such as calendar integration. For example, it'd be great to be able to sync my google calendar to the iPod.
I've also had success unmounting and remounting the ipod in karmic - however, songbird will not eject the ipod then. You have to quit songbird and choose "safely remove" from the desktop or "eject" from the panel. Unmounting or simply disconnecting the device leads to the darkside.
Plugged in my iPod 1st gen, it recognized it...
then i go to the "Apple iPod" tab and press "sync" then "save" then "sync" again on the top right corner...
AND NOTHING HAPPENED
PLEASE HELP!!
btw...it says i have 4.1GB space on my ipod, i'm guessing i'll need to erase that all off my iPod in order to sync my whole Songbird Library?
I'm trying to sync with my Palm Pre (emulates an iPod Nano). I'm able to do this in Amarok (and of course used to in iTunes). Songbird appears to have added playlists to the Pre, but no songs show up in the Pre's library when browsing with Songbird, nor on the Pre's music player.
Any suggestions? Please help!
This might sound weird, but... I only want to use this add-on to play song from my iPod on Songbird. I want to use this add-on on read-only mode. Is there a way I can do this? I don't want songbird to touch the database or anything at all. Last time I used this add-on half my library got erased, and then when the problem got fixed, everytime I played songs, they get changed, their album art gets erased. I'm uneasy by using this extension, that's why I want to use it on read-only mode
.
I wish we could have a feature of also importing the lyrics and artwork. :( ..
Developers please add this feature too..
When will 1.4.2 be supported and: when will album covers be supported? I am using an Ipod Classic 120, btw. I have been using a nano and didn't much care about the absence of covers, but with the bigger screen now, I am REALLY waiting for this.
Can somebody please tell me how to get this to work??? If you can figure it out, email me at jb701926@gmail.com
Thanks
I feel really stupid as I say this :/
Does not seem to work with my ipod nano 3g, software version 1.1.3. When I connect the ipod, nothing happens in Songbird (but I can find it in itunes, no problem there).
Seconding renseāI have the 4G nano and it isn't showing up at all. I really don't want to have to use itunes.
Someone PLEASEE!!! help me. i had NOT this new version of songbird..i have the ipod nano 3rd Generation*..and before everything was perfect, now i downloaded the ipod add on again..and Nothing happens!!!...it wont read my dam ipod..what should i doo?? someone help meee pleaseeeee :(
Ipod add-on is not working with this version yet. Read this:
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/best_player_ever_if_you_fix_the_ipod_support
We can only hope that someone will make it work. You can just import your songs from "iPod_Control folder" to songbird
since Apple stopped sueing the ipodhash-author this year .. and songbird 1.4.3 is out .. i would be happy to see also this addon upgraded :-/ .. will that ever happen ? if not i would have to go back to itunes :-((((
i would agree to a commercial addon if it would fit into the songbird-license .. since the businessmodel for apple is to sell such features ( media monkey does it but only available for Windows) .. http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/why_is_my_ipod_not_showing_up_on_songbird2 .. is SB open to commecial plugins ?
Doesn't Apple get it? iTunes is awful on Windows, because they don't care about their non-Mac consumers. I bought an iPod the day Songbird 0.6 released with iPod support. I refuse to use anything but Songbird! If the support goes away, looks like my iPod does as well. Get with it, Apple.
To solve the problem of iPod not getting detected by Songbird on UBUNTU 9.10 (karmic koala)...
Follow steps given on this link. It surely works...
http://linux-junky.blogspot.com/2009/12/make-ipod-work-on-songbird-120-under_29.html
shit 1.5.0a!!!
do you will launch a version for 1.4.3 soon? my ipod is starving for new material.^^
Why can I not download this? Grrrr!
please can someone develop ipod support, i stupidly updated to the new version of songbird and now i cant support my ipod, its taken three days to set up itunes and sort out my ipod!!!
ITUNES is pathetic.
@ SONGBIRD-dev-team .. again my request: (because other addons provide it as well -- this site dont ) please not only tell its opensource .. also link to the source-code downlod URI :-/
svn co http://publicsvn.songbirdnest.com/client/trunk/extensions/ipod .. my20cents
muy bueno el mejor gestor para el ipod
Unfortunately without iPod support I won't be switching to Songbird. Hopefully this situation will change in the future but for now will be sticking with iTunes.
I recommend to all that want to see this feature back in some shape or form to uninstall Songbird and take the survey that pops up and state that you are uninstalling because of the lack of iPod support.
Good. Why should the Songbird developers waste time reverse engineering/hacking iPod communications only to have Apple change the method over and over again. THIS IS WASTED TIME AND RESOURCES!!. If Songbird only had to create/develop support a few times (initially + updates) then I would agree that refusing to do so would be short-sighted, but Apple is intentionally making it difficult. Continuing to develop the iPod support only encourages this mindset. Although I don't understand why previous iPod support was dropped as it just seems like wasted effort. There are plenty of portable audio players that are now on the same level as the iPod and operate with "more open" standards. With having to hack away at Apple's proprietary controls they will have more time to develop and improve on these standards. I have enjoyed my iPod for many years but Apple's consistent attitude for control has ensured that I will not be purchasing another one.
It would be realy great, if you could make an update vor version 1.4.3...
Why would the most important extension for this software no longer be developed or supported? Is it a legal issue? Songbird is useless to me unless I can sync it with my ipod/iphone devices.
I can't download. The download button isn't on function.
.. cant get sleep ;-) .. so i successfully downgraded my IPOD NANO (2g/8GB) to Firmware-19.8.1.3 via "dd" .. all fine but: even with this "very very original Firmware" (first available for this Ipod .. songbird just doesnt see it .. so its in this case .. more than just apples interference that causes this issue .. still no errors on the errorconsole :-( .. it already worked back in 2008
Without this addon - Songbird is fail. It will never ever overtake Winamp/Itunes. Very very poor decision by the developers, I hope someone is good enough to continue the development of this addon, otherwise the developers have dug themselves a hole.
iPod Device Support 3.0.14.1190 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Songbird 1.4.3.
Update!!! man!!! thanks....
Check the old version here:
http://developer.songbirdnest.com/builds/Songbird1.4/1430/
I found the latest ipod support plug-in here: http://developer.songbirdnest.com/builds/Songbird1.4/latest/addons/
But for the moment it crashes Songbird when I scroll through my ipod library.
So I think I'll get back to Songbird 1.4.1.
Thnx YaniQC. I can now listen music from my ipod with songbird, but i can't add music.
@mareke: please tell us your OS/version ..

This Ipod addon ruined my ipod database. So i don't recomend it.
Now I use Floola. Install Itunes to restore ipod to factory settings.
Connect it to itunes and add 1 song to library to get work Floola.
Then I download Floola and I run it.
After that make backup (copy all ipod files), after that you can uninstall itunes forever :)
trueshanti: i have Windows XP Pro.
You can sync your iPod with Songbird using Rockbox. Here's a small how-to.
Hi. I just installed Songbird about 20 minutes ago after re-installing Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, and decided to get some iPod support for Songbird and was bummed when it said that this add-on is not compatible with my version of Songbird. Besides installing additional software on my PC, will there be (or is there) a fix to this at this moment in time? Thanks!
Please continu iPod / iPhone support !!! Songbird is the best music player on linux. The only big miss is that iPhone support.
How I Can instal this plugin?
por favor creen uno para el songbird 1.4 para que lo pueda usar!!!!
pleace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^_^
totally disastrous, looks like the evil apple corp raises its ugly head again ='[
im totally gutted i cant update my ipod with songbird now but i would rather burn in hell than go back to itunes >.<
Argh, please update I don't want to go back to iTunes :(
For the v1.4 ipod plugin go here.
http://developer.songbirdnest.com/builds/Songbird1.4/1419/addons/
Tested the linux-x86_64 with ubuntu and I have to 'unmount' from the desktop and then go to 'places -> ipod' and re-mount it before songbird will see it. But it seems to work great once that's done.
Version: Songbird 1.4.3, Build 1438 (20091223030122)
Forgot to add, it's 'developer' so be careful. See the posts above. It does create an extra 'album artwork' play-list with one song (strange), but that's trivial to me.
Oops, wrong link! Sorry for the multiple posts. Last one, I promise. :)

I cannot manage to transfer any mp3 file to the ipod library.
I get this error (something similar, since im translating from spanish)
"Addedd to library: 0 , "Not allowed"
"Encoder? not available file:///xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/xxxx.mp3"
The above worked for me, but your mileage may vary. I hope I helped someone!
It's very good
Am i the only one experiencing issues with the extension? Can anyone help me, please? Am i missing any dependencie?
I have the same problem. My iPod Shuffel is available but if I try to transfer music some errors appears.

EVERYONE LOOK HERE:
w0rd88 is correct that this does recognize the iPod (I have 2nd gen nano on Win7, songbird 1.4.3):
link:
http://developer.songbirdnest.com/builds/Songbird1.4/latest/addons/
add on you want:
ipod-3.0.15.1419-windows-i686-msvc8.xpi
HOWEVER!!!!
I am not able to add songs to the iPod, I get the error:
0 added to library (1 unsupported)
I can play songs, and remove songs, but not add them
ANY HELP w0rd88????
I should also mention to people having trouble that you can use songbird portable version 1.2 with the old add on and it works with iPods like a charm. you can also have multiple versions of add ons installed when running portable 1.2 while still having the latest greatest versions running in 1.4.3.
you just can't have both versions open at once.
I would love to get this working though with 1.4.3, natively with no developer version BS. hope my posts help someone.
okay wait wait, so when I said in songbird 1.2 it 'works like a charm' - I lied, sometimes it won't recognize the iPod so you have to disable the addon, restart, then enable the addon, restart - then it works like a charm.
damn this is giving me a headache. fix this thing someone!!!
Downloaded this http://developer.songbirdnest.com/builds/Songbird1.4/latest/addons/
Does nothing. I can't believe this is no longer being supported. I have an ipod, what am i supposed to do? over 50% of people that would use this program have an ipod. Makes no sense.
I agree with winter123 on this one. I strongly suggest that this extension continue to be supported.
With it not being supported I'm considering other music players already! I don't like that because I love Songbird.
Somehow it started working... but It's forcing me to wipe my ipod and sync playlists, which won't work for me. If I try to click manually manage, "Ok" and cancel are both greyed out.
ooh! I just click library instead. I'll tell you what I did, can't guarantee it'll work for everyone. Downloaded this (twice, accidentally) http://developer.songbirdnest.com/builds/Songbird1.4/latest/addons/ , clicked stop ignoring all devices, or whatever somewhere in options, restarted songbird several times, restarted the computer. Then click Library to view, or right click a song in your library to add to ipod. Figures, since I just gave up and downloaded itunes...
I'm tired to look for some songbird/addon combination to sync my ipod since 2 weeks. I love it but I will desintall it and go back to itunes...shame on me!
pleas could someone bring life in this application.
i really like songbird but without ipod sync i just have to go back to itunes.
Thought I had finally found the perfect player, then I find out that ipod support is discontinued. Sorry if the devs had trouble with Apple, but after three days I am uninstalling and going back to itunes. :-(
Don't want to beat a dead horse, but not sure I can use Songbird without this extension. Really want to get away from iTunes, but may not be able to at this time.
mig
This is the best extension of them all!
