Album Art Manager for Songbird.
Dec 8, 2008 - Pretty much all of the functionality of the add on will be in the 1.1 release of songbird, also I have a Media View (Album View) that will display the albums in a grid, so this will pretty much replace the Album Art Manager Dialog with a Media View. I will work very hard on the core and the Album View add on for you all so that you have the Album Art Manager functionality back very soon :).
Album View can be found at http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1311
Album List can be found at http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1309
Oct 9, 2008 - I have bad news and I have great news! Album Art Manager will no longer be worked on, this is so that I can concentrate on working it into the core application. The display pane and two of the fetchers are now included already, other fetching is going to be implemented soon. This is going to go though a major redesign so that it will be much more usable in future releases of Songbird. Thank you all for your support and because of that (and the 116K downloads!) it has become one of the major must do's for Songbird :). I will be working very hard with the design/product team to make Album Art rock in Songbird. RIP Album Art Manager RIP...
An album cover manager for the Songbird media player. It has a manager window that will allow users to download or set covers for the albums in their main library. It also will use fetchers (that can be added separately as well) to get covers from various services or files or even metadata.
Future Features: To come in version 2.1:
To come in version 2.2:
Fetchers:
Want to add more fetchers to the Album Art Manager? Well if you can code JavaScript then you can! All you have to do is implement a sbICoverFetcher component (see the Last.FM Fetcher Add on for an example). Build it as an extension and your done. You may want to make the new extension dependent on the Album Art Manager. NOTE: You will need to create a new id for your new component and set it to the classID variable (use uuidgen) otherwise your new component will conflict with others. If you have any questions email me at steven at songbirdnest dot com.
Added priority back to the fetchers. (This is due to the last.fm fetcher upgrade).

Nice add-on but it would be great to implement a function to show the cover^^
What do you mean by show the cover? Do you mean the location on the disk or site? Thanks for your comment :)
it would be great if you could display the cover, maybe in the “Service Pane Bottom” because the idea of your ad don is nice but to display the cover in songbird would be nicer^^
Hey there, you might want to rename this album art extension to maybe displays album art… cause i was confused when I saw this one and your add on that allows you to get a cover off the amazon site sharing the same name… Thanks for both of these… they will come in handy!
thanks that’s what I meant.
But it seems to doesn’t work right now. Because it got the same name as your other add-on the old add-on get overwritten.
and I can’t display the add-on in the Service Pane
I have now combined the Now Playing and Album art manager so you can ignore this one (I will try and get it deleted).
I have now combined the Now Playing and Album art manager so you can ignore this one (I will try and get it deleted).
Done and done :) thanks for the feedback.
Big Thanks.
But I think calling “Now Playing” is not really good because “Now Playing List” uses the same name in songbird, i think this could leads to conflicts.
But thanks for developing :=).
Nice work Stevo!
I don’t have the option to display “Now Playing” in any service pane. Using 0.4rc2 on WinXP. I used to have both this and the conflicting Now Playing List add-on, but I uninstalled both, reinstalled this, and it still doesn’t show up as an option in the service pane.
Where does this take the album art from, and where does it store it? In the file’s tag? As folder.jpg?
Also, I have a single folder full of all my album art, with the artists and album titles in the filenames. It’d be nice to be able to specify a default folder to look in for album art, matching artists and album titles in the filenames.
Thanks for working on this vital component.
That is odd that it does not show up in the service pane for windows, I am on a mac so I will have to load up my virtual machine to test this out.
The art comes from the property Album Art Location which you can find in the field selector on the library page. When it finds art from amazon it will store the art in the same folder as the first media item in the album as cover.jpg. But you can specify any image name for the album art.
The folder monitoring is something that I have been thinking about, I would like to have the Now Playing check if there is an album cover for the currently playing track, and if not then it will search for one, so expect that to come in a couple versions!
Thanks for the great feedback!
Thanks Matt!
What would you suggest I call this, I put the name in a dtd/properties file so it can be called what ever we want (if you want you can change it in the dtd file :) ).
Same here under Linux, there is no “Now Playing†option.
It looks like nice, but it doesn’t work with files from usb-storage devices. it would be nice!
It doesn’t work with Win XP and Songbird 0.4. The add-on doesn’t appear in the display menu.
That’s a shame, this add-on looks great. I hope that it’ll be fixed very soon.
im sad about this but it doesnt work with SB 0.4, WinXP SP2
i used version 0.7 and the service pane and the manager doesnt work. i hope the addon will work after some fixes
greetz ALU
I tested this on Windows XP SP2 and it works fine for me, can you check your error console to see if there is anything in there about the add-on?
Thanks,
Stevo
The extension doesn’t work for me on WINXP SP2, Songbird 0.4 and Album Art Manager 0.7.
Nothing appears in the View menu and when I click on Album Art Manager in the tools menu, a window appears with “Covers” written in it but nothing else.
In my error console, I have 2 things that seems to be related to your add-on: :: line 11” data: no]

Hello,
same for me with Ubuntu 7.10 and 0.4rc2
Furthermore I am not able to add Covers.
Here my error log
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception… “Invalid ClassID or ContractID” nsresult: “0x80570017 (NSERRORXPCBADCID)” location: “JS frame :: file:///home/xxx/.songbird1/aj1n9089.default/extensions/AlbumArtManager @songbirdnest.com/components/sbAlbumArtService.js :: :: line 11” data: no]

Before, I forgot that this addon shares the same name with Now Playing List, so I couldn’t figure out how to get the pane to show. But it turns out that I just have to click on “Now Playing” again to show this instead of the list extension.
Great, version 0.8 works on WinXP.
I think that you could improve some things:
Otherwise, this is a great extension, thank you very much.
very nice work stevo !
now the plugin works perfect!
i ever missd covers in songbird !
here i had a couple ideas for you :
→preferences for your display popup
→read covers from ID3Tags
greetz ALU
With the 0.4 final release, Album Art Manager 0.0.8 appears to be working for me (WinXP), though it still does conflict with Now Playing List.
Some further suggestions:
And a bug:
Thanks for your continued work on this and the speedy updates!
Oh, it looks like it already does this!
Actually, you should be able to configure the colors of the track notification in Growl in your System Preferences.
I don’t use MacOS X but Win XP. How can I d on Windows to make the notifications more readable?
Thanks for your help
Hi maybe you can add a function to disable the notifier or to change the transparency etc.
Using the notifier with directx applications like games leads to a stuttering video output in the directx applications, not only while the notifier is on top even after disappearing.
Oh, right, I have no idea how I forgot about that. :)
Looks like the alert system in this extension is simply a styled window. If you know how an extension works, you can change the css file yourself in the skin directory.
But if you have no idea what I have just said, you should probably wait for future updates. There’s no user-friendly way to customize the notifications on Windows or Linux currently, but stevo is probably working on that.
Ooh, I just found out that this now lets you specify your own image. Thanks!
But I also found a bug. Seems like the notifications do not get and display the cover art when you leave Songbird in mini mode.
Maybe the notifier pop-up doesn’t disappear completely and remains minimized in the foreground please fix it thanks.
Currently there is an issue when a album has various artists. Only some of the tracks will get album data. I commented out line 281 which tells songbird to search for a specific artist name in addition to the album name in order to resolve the problem.
seems to be a conflict between birdtitel and albumart manager, i cant disable the birdtitle notifier but this is a other problem and has to be solved in a other threat^^
Manually fetching covers from amazon is screwed up for me. Covers I fetched for one album will appear on other albums, and lots of times all the albums will show the same cover even though thats not actually the cover stored for that album.
Letting albums fetch as they play seems okay, although I’m not sure how that works, since I have folder.jpg files for albums on my computer it might just be getting it from those.
Also, would it be possible to "search" for album covers? What I mean is, for an album that doesn't fetch correctly from amazon, I could put in a keyword for it to search for covers with that keyword, then pick the correct one. It would be useful especially if I customized the album title.Thank you all for your comments and suggestions! I am working hard to meet everyones needs :)
Version 0.9 makes it so that when I’m in the Album Art Manager, there are no albums shown.
‘album art manager’ menu option opens a blank indow on 0.0.9
Hello Stevo
in the 0.0.9 version are some bugs on windows
→album art manager opens a clear window
→the covers won’t show
i hope you will fix this soon
PS: your plugin is really great ;)

0.0.9 dont work for me (windows).
It shows no covers, only the little birdy.
album art manager opens a blank window, with only the menu “Covers” and “Missing Art Work”-Button. (Both do nothing, when I click it).
Its seems to be a similar problem as the one mentioned by Julien1311, Fri, 12/28/2007–01:12PM.
The screenshots are wonderful, it would be great, if you can get it working ;-)
Hi Stevo
Version 0.9.1 didn’t work for me… same as 0.9.0 ,wait for fixes ;)
keep going
greetz ALU
the album cover problem doesn’t seem to be fixed for me.
’preciate your work, though!
yeah im having the same problem 0.09–0.091 havent worked for me. Current Album Cover shows the default image and window only shows the two buttons.
This looks like a great addon, but as with the above I can’t get it to display anything. I’ve got a clean install of 0.4 and there are no messages in the error console.
I’m running Windows XP.
thx for the great work so far :)
HI stevo
the new version 0.9.2 works great for me on WinXP
SB 0.4 after a bit testing the button “get missing covers” didn’t work
and i have had some problems with the covers form Billy Talent… but after a while i get the right covers on the right Billy album so it doesnt matter as much.
PS: very very great work Stevo !
PS II: sorry for my terrible english ;)
regards ALU
Hi Stevo,
Version 0.9.2 displays the covers and the filter displays the missing covers. However when i played a song that in the album art manager has a cover assigned, the current playing pane in the bottom corner does not show the artwork it just shows the default songbird image.
I am running ubuntu 7.10 with songbird 0.4
Great work stevo
Seems like the Album Manager is working again :).
Though, none of the covers that have been fetched are showing up there. They sow up in the “current album cover” area, but the manager shows I don’t have covers for anything o_O.
Also, could you implement some sorting or search function to the manager? Even just an alphabetical sort would help, I can’t find anything.
Hey Stevo!
Installed the latest update (0.9.2) and was surprised to see it still didn’t work (album art simply wasn’t downloaded at all). Madly checking and unchecking the options however made me realise what was up:
For some reason when the option “Save covers to” was selected (with a folder that did exist and was writable) new album images would not be downloaded or saved. Changing this back to “Use album location” fixed the problem and it now works fine.
Just though I should let you know. :-)
Also teh “Get missing artwork from amazon” button doesn’t work–though I can fetch each album from amazon individually
* I'm also having problems with Album Art not showing up on the display pane (Service Pane Bottom). Only the default songbird image appears. * also not able to get missing art work from amazon. I'm running Songbird 0.4 on XP. Any updates or suggestions? Please and thank you.
First of all, great work Stevo! Your add on is my favorite so far.
I was having the same problem as Yelif and many others, but when I enabled Track Change Notification the service pane worked again.
Yet I have another problem: Album Art Manager is fetching the same cover for a group of albums with entirely different names/artists. Any idea why this is happening?
0.9.2 now partly works. It shows everything correct, and finds missing covers on amazon.
BUT: it did not save any cover! it doesnt even show them in den “current album cover”-section.
So now that even worse than before, because now I can see what is possible with this add-on, but i cant reach it! :’-(
I hope you find a solution…
The next important step should be to use amazon-stores in different countries. That would be a dream!
Rock on!
it worked!! Cron you’re a genius! Once I enabled the track change notification the Album covers appeared.
now if we can only find out why Amazon fetches the same cover for all tracks.
thanks guys, keep up the good work.
This might be a stupid question but does it also fetch the embedded album art directly from the MP3?
All my MP3’s have embedded album art, which is shown in multiple mediaplayers and devices (incl. iPod/Playstation Portable/Walkman phone, etc) but it does not display in Songbird with this addon…
Currently it does not, but I am working on that for version 1.0 :)
Hey, great add-on, or at least it would be if I could sort this slight issue I’m having.
All my music is stored on a server in my house, and although your add-on successfully identifies the correct album cover, and downloads it, it fails to display it from the network, I just have a grey (perhaps transparent) box, which shows nothing at all.
I’d like to have the covers stored with the music rather than keep them locally, any ideas why it can’t display from the network?
That is very odd, it should be able to display the image from any valid URI (http, chrome, file, etc). If the location of the media item is something like smb:// that may not work correctly, also if it is a network location that requires login then it may not be able to use that either.
I have been working on the 1.0 version which will be more stable but I am not sure it will fix the issue you are having, if you could give me an example of the path under “Album Art Location” I can try and replicate the issue.
Thanks :).
Oh right, it does require a login, thought it might just see if windows had already logged in, like songbird seems to do to play the music, the only thing thats confusing me now, is its creating the file, its downloading the image, and saving it on the network, so surely if its got permission to write, then its got permission to read?
file:////mediapc/music/kate%20nash/made%20of%20bricks/foundations.mp3
Please pardon my ignorance but I am completely new to Songbird.
I just installed SB 0.4 and am not able dont know how to get album covers. I have the default icon for all albums.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Edit:
I all of a sudden have album covers? I still don't know how to download them, though.
I figured it out. Sorry.
album art is the same as above, but with cover.jpg in place of foundations.mp3, sorry, wrote down wrong location.
Hi!
I’m giving a try at your add-on, but I have some problems. But 1st: OS: Ubuntu 7.10, and SB: 0.4.
1) Most of my album covers are saved where the respective audio files are and the cover is named folder.jpg. It seems your add-on uses cover.jpg, which is fine as long as it will recognize folder.jpg too, or Folder.jpg, or the 1st image file in the directory.
2) I downloaded one cover for an album. It saved it correctly at the right folder with name of cover.jpg, but Current Album Cover does not show it. Is it supposed to show when I play the file and when it’s selected, or when?
I go to the manager (through the menu) and right click on some albums to get it’s cover from amazon.
that works (the covers appear)
but on the left buttom of songbird where the cover should appear then when i play the album there’s just the default songbird album cover–.–
Retrieving Album Covers from ID3Tags would make life so much easier for everyone.
Keep up the good work.
can we erase this add-on so that nobody accidently downloads it
Is anyone else having problems setting the album cover from a local file?
Also, it would be really cool if the Album Art Manager add-on could talk to the Album View add-on.
Also, is this album art only for use within Songbird, or is it supposed to be saving into the metadata? So far it’s not writing into the metadata for me, because the art isn’t showing up in the Album Applet add-on.
I am using Ver.0.9.2. And, though it remodeled for Amazon.co.jp Two byte character is garbled, and a normal result is not obtained. Then, to obtain a normal result so that the user in the sphere of two bytes might also use it, the source was corrected. The revision part is the following. 1.Request parameter change to Amazon Artist=%artist%%album-query% -> Keywords=%artist%%album-query% - In Artist because it is too severe as the retrieval item 2.Method change escape() -> encodeURI() unescape() -> decodeURI() - Two byte character because normally it encodes, and the decipherment doesn't occur. Moreover, because the folder of an abnormal name is made if the encode decipherment cannot be normally done. 3.Method application addition EncodeURI() is applied to all the request parameters to Amazon. - Because the request parameter to Amazon reaches normally. The cover of MP3 that uses the character in two bytes can be acquired in these correspondences and the image be acquired from Amazon.co.jp normally. I think something for it to be able to refer though it is uncertain whether it is correspondence that this is correct. Moreover, the image acquisition correspondence excluding Amazon.com is officially expected.
Getting two notifications of a track change, first the album art is displayed from this plugin, then another notification which is slightly different with no album art.
I’ve checked all other plug-ins and nothing is conflicting, screenshots showing the progression are below (I hope it’s ok to post links like this).
1. http://img403.imageshack.us/my.php?image=albumart1oh4.jpg
2. http://img85.imageshack.us/my.php?image=albumart2dz5.jpg
3. http://img524.imageshack.us/my.php?image=albumart3qy3.jpg
The first notification scrolls away before the second one does.
Found it was “Minimise to system tray” causing the extra song notification. I’ll make a relevant comment but I’m sure he knows.
So this plugin is pretty much perfect for me!
Good work.

Patiently waiting for SB 0.5 support . . .
Well we have been pretty busy working on 0.5 so my time has been concentrating on that, but the good news is that we are updating the AlbumArtManager to work with 0.5 at the same time and it may be integrated with 0.6!

Hi, it does not install to any version of Songbird. I tried a nightly build, blessed build and even 0.4, and every time I’ve got

I get the same problem on Mac OSX.
Ok new version uploaded that fixes the can not be installed because it’s not compatible. Sorry about that.
Still has error. Using 0.5 nightly build and windows vista.
With what version of Songbird it is currently compatible?
Is there an option to tell Album Art Manager that the cover.jpg’s are located in the folder with the music?
Same problem on Linux using Nightly Build:

yes, i see it now. changed to Linux _x86-gcc3 and was able to install.
it does not seem to work at the moment though it did for previous versions.
I am at a loss here….

Hello, I am totally new to songbird but loving it so far, and bar far this is the best add-on I have found, but I am having a little trouble with something.
From what I have read I think this add-on will allow a similar function to coverflow in iTunes, but whenever it starts for me it comes up in a seperate window from the main songbird window, am I doing something wrong?
charliwest
The addon you are thinking of is album applet it implements something similar to itunes coverflow. This one just lets you manage the covers of each of your albums (btw i just love it, its one of my favorites)
Think i might have found a bug or two.
Have the album by Weird Al Yankovic Called “Weird Al” Yankovic, the album name includes quotes. When i search for the album art on amazon it acts like it didnt find it. But it seems to have saved it correctly in the folder. Still wont display it though. This makes me think there might be some kind of escaping problem?
With the latest version (With the swirling images) when it starts searching for an image it cant find it wont stop, and this seems to lag / stop future searches from working unless i re open songbird. Any ideas? Is there a built in timeout?
Hi there! I want to suggest another feature that is present in other mmedia player. I noticed that if a MP3Tag contain the cover, it is ignored and the extension try to download it however. Would be nice to have this!
Bye, J.
Thanks for your reply.
That add-on seems to have gone, anyone know what happened?
Nice work but it would be ace if it could grab your current covers from itunes. Is this possible?
Here’s a bug when saving covers!
(SB 0.5, AAM 1.0.2)
The extension is set to save into the original music folder but cannot handle ‘non-standard’ letters, e.g.
original, existing music folder:
“Olé, Olé”;
instead of saving the cover into this folder the extension creates a new folder named
“olé, olé” .
Another example,
“Grönemeyer” &
“grönemeyer” .
Also, when the extension cannot find a cover it continuous displaying the last played, known cover, which is confusing. I would prefer, if it would either show a blank images or a note stating that no cover is yet available.
Hope that makes sense.
Cheers, C
Let me start this by stating that I may be doing something wron. I’m running SB 0.5 & AAM 1.0.2+dev. I put my album art covers in the same folder at the album. With some covers AAM recopies a different cover into the folder than the one I placed there.
Got a suggestion. Add on works like a charm by the way. Is there a way you code the add on to look up a playlist item that constantly changes?(internet radio artist/song name)
When I Try to “Get Artwork from file” it just doesn’t work: it keeps of “finding the artwork” to infinity…..
help?
Yeah…
Does this get the artwork from a website?
Because i have downloaded songs from skreemr, and only 2 of the tracks have artwork displayed when they are played.
I am doing this wrong? i thought this would be good so the album art would be saved and displayed on my mp3, but only a couple actually do
Also when you click on the art in the seperate window, and select get from amazon, it never seems to stop swirling.
Is this a problem? maybe in next version maybe use a faster album finder thing.
I don’t know if you’ve realised, but you need to update this extension to implement sbIPlaylistPlaybackListener.onBeforeTrackChange
Proposal for new FEATURE:
Do you think it would be possible to have an image handling implemented in order to store the album art in the files directly?
I have just seen the screenshot with the WIN popup. So of course also a linux version using libnotify would be nice to have.
Cheers and thanks for your effort in that !
Martin

Version 1.1.0+dev is not installing correctly on Songbird 0.5/Ubuntu. It says something about errors with chrome registration.
I have installed it on 0.6 blessed build and it does not fetch images from Amazon. Getting images from file system however works perfectly.
Also for some reason I have two song change notification on both sides of the screen and the one one right does not disappear afterward.Great add on. Worked well before i did this recent download. Though I like the changes you have made and wishing for more….. I am currently not even seeing an option to view album Art.
I am just not seeing any album art at all.
Using Songbird .5
I have the same problem. In version 1.10+dev, there is no option to dock it to the service pane bottom, or indeed any other pane.
Running Songbird/0.6pre (20080410013024) on Windows XP
I should also add that when i launch album art Manager, it remains empty but keeps saying loading albums. I had all the Album Art before this install.
Oh.. Using Windows Vista
I’ve got the same issues as deomega and Blu Aardvark using Songbird 0.5 on 3 different computers running respectively XP, Vista and Hardy.
Current one appears broken… I have the same issues as the people above on my Ubuntu 8.04 Laptop.
This was really useful too!
That “AlbumApplet” (Java Coverflow extn) doesn’t work for me either so meh.
I am running Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron 8.04 32bit. Album Art applet has stopped working ever since upgrading to 1.10+dev.
I am using Songbird 0.6 Nightly (Blessed)
This problem was fixed in version 1.1.1+dev
Ah, new problem.
I’m displaying the proper album cover in the Album Art Manager window, loaded from file. The Current Album Cover viewpane, however, is not displaying that album cover when it should be; rather just displaying the default birdie.
Songbird 0.6pre blessed build 2008-05-09 on Windows XP.
Same With me.
Hardy Heron 8.04 32bit
Since last upgrade to 1.1.1 not working as well.
Stevo,
I see you are trying and I know we all appreciate it. However, the same problems exist. No luck at all.
Upgraded to 1.1.1+DEV but still no joy, are there any dependencies we should be aware of in Ubuntu Linux???
I’ve even gone to the extremes of reverting back to Songbird 0.5, but no luck.
I am beginning to wonder if this is a problem with Songbird though
System: Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron (8.04) 32Bit, Songbird 0.5 (downgraded from 0.6pre (installed from TARball))
Despite sounding like a bunch of ungrateful bast*rds, we do appreciated all your hard work, which maybe why some people are upset that such a useful plugin has stopped working for no apparent reason...This is a great addon and I really like the song notifications better than the ones from the systray extension, but it just isn’t working any more.
I’m having the same issues reported above (no option for album art content pane, Manager never moves past “loading albums…”, no notification popups, etc.).
I hope you can get the issues straightened out. Good luck, sir!
Very well said!!!! We do appreciate the product.
I May have a solution…
Firstly, make sure you have selected VIEW > SHOW SERVICE PANE BOTTOM
click on the icon when that pane appears (looks like the outline of a window with a down arrow in it). Select CURRENT ALBUM COVER.
As for the manager, I am unsure, but I have just “upgraded” to the LATEST nightly build, and (re)INSTALLED Album Art Manager through the Songbird Add-Ons bookmark.
Upon restarting Songbird, I went to ADD-ONS (you MAY have to do the bottom pane thing again) Album Art Manager and lo and behold ALL my albums loaded…
Give it a whirl. “Upgrading” to 0.6pre will wipe the databse that holds you library, so you’ll need to be patient while Songbird rebuilds it. IT WILL NOT DELETE ANY PHYSICAL FILES!!
I upgraded for a moment to 0.6 pre, and it works there, but it does not work in 0.5.
OK, decided to stay with 0.6Pre Blessed, since it works there.
Doesn’t work with Songbird 0.5 on Windows XP. ! I installed it via the menu, restarted and nothing happend.
Is there any way to display already embedded mp3 album art? I don’t need that Amazon stuff.
I originally had problems with the blessed build, so I resolved to use one of the Nightly Nightly builds instead, hope fully the next blessed will be built on this, it’s pretty stable, but I’m always wary of nightly built stuff…
Thanks to all who have been debugging and using this for me, you have put me as one of the top 3 downloaded Add-ons for Songbird! Woot! As you may or may not know I am a full time Songbird developer and this is my “side” project :). This of course means that I don’t have a lot of time to work on the AAM. It also means that I am always building for the latest release (as in nightly) of songbird, currently 0.6. I apologize if this causes trouble for people but once we get to Songbird V1.0 this will be a lot more stable as well, it also allows me to use the latest features from Songbird :).
On that note if you come across any bugs for this Add on could you please log them in Bugzilla at http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com? Please put it under the Add-ons Component for the current version of Songbird and in the summary if you could prefix with [AlbumArtManager] that would be great! :).
I will be testing this more on each platform (windows/ubuntu/os x) as I know have reliable VM’s on a good machine :).
Watch for version 1.2 coming soon :).
So, after this new update, I went back to 0.5 and still having issues. . . so, I will just wait for the official 0.6 Release.
Also, please see if anyone can help out the developer of ‘catalog view’.. awesome compliment to this addon. Just what the doctor ordered.
I updated to 0.6 songbird beta and the most recent update of album art manager. Manager did not update my cover art automatically. I could download art from amazon and from my file location but I had to do each individually. The problem now is that the cover will not appear in the bottom service pane. I would really love to have this work.
Just loaded in version 1.3.1. Just keeps saying loading album 0 of 44… little wheel keeps turning and turning….
I have the same problem :(
Could you provide more information please, what album/artist is the first one? Are there any errors in the error console? etc. thanks.
Hi Stevo,
The first album is “What’s the Story) Morning Glory ?” from Oasis. I tried to rename the album in “0” but it didn’t change anything.
When I open the “Album Art Manager” window, five errors appears :
1/ Error: [Exception… “’JavaScript component does not have a method named: "onStateChange”’ when calling method: [sbILocalDatabaseAsyncGUIDArrayListener::onStateChange]" nsresult: “0x80570030 (NSERRORXPCJSOBJECTHASNOFUNCTION_NAMED)” location: “” data: no]

I’m using Songbird 0.6pre 20080521 and WinXP SP2.
I hope you can solve the problem.
Thanks for your work.
Ah yes, the onStateChange problem should be fixed very soon, the other problem is that the Artist/Album has unsafe characters for the filesystem so it is unable to properly look for a cover at this time. I am looking into making the generated filenames for the covers safe.
I don't know if it is supposed to, but the version 1.3.3 doesn't solve my problem! Moreover, I think that the new art for missing albums is too bright. I prefer the other one with the bird.
Sorry no, this release shouldn’t fix those problems yet, still working on it.
For the art, Maybe I could put a better background color on it since it is slightly transparent.
I have another error that appears when I launch Songbird :
Error: [Exception… “Not enough arguments [sbICoverFetcher.fetchCoverForMediaItem]” nsresult: “0x80570001 (NSERRORXPCNOTENOUGH_ARGS)” location: “JS frame :: file:///D:/Sauvegardes/Songbird/extensions/albumartmanager@songbirdnest.com/components/sbCoverScanner.js :: LibraryScanner_askNextFetcher :: line 543” data: no]
Source File: file:///D:/Sauvegardes/Songbird/extensions/albumartmanager@songbirdnest.com/components/sbCoverScanner.js
Line: 543
This one seems easy to fix.
Another question : do you plan on adding a multi-language support ? If you do, tell me I could translate the add-on in French.
Julien1311 – The JS error should be fixed (askNextFetcher) now, forgot I added another param to that function :).
I built the add on with multi-language support using the dtd and properties files, you can add your own for any language :).
I have all my album art in Itunes, but somehow, I am having problems getting songbird and Album art manager to pick them all up.
Maybe I will wait for the June Beta .6 release.
Keep up the good works Stevo.
For some reason it won’t pick up the album covers, even though they are embedded in the meta-data of the songs. Also, the current album cover doesn’t update much.
In relation to the first of my complaintlets, Just being able to type in the path of the image would make my OCD-compulses for cover-flow come true.
P.S, is the current album cover thing in the bottom left supposed to update after every song, or just when you select a song to play?
@Che Currently we are not able to read the image metadata, there is a bug about this 9033 which hopefully will be done for the 0.7 early on.
The cover at the bottom left only changes with track changes, but I could change that to show selected instead per user option :).
Thanks for the ideas and using the add on :)
Since i posted the message above, i realized that .6 RC2 is out, so I installed it.
Is there something I am doing wrong why I am just having problems getting album art? It only retrieve SOME album covers, but that is after playing them… and sometimes it is not a cover I have on my computer.
Also, when i load the Album Art manager, only 2 albums show up out of Hundreds and it is unable to locate art for them. There was a time in the past when all my album art was showing up.
Any ideas welcome.
Using Windows Vista and importing from Itunes Library. Some of the art was downloaded via itunes and some with MediaMonkey.
Oh, and art not showing up in the left service pane, even when the song playing has an album.
Hi Stevo,
I have translated your add-on in French. How can I send the albumartmanager.properties and albumartmanager.dtd files so you can update the xpi?
I hope you’ll be able to fix the problem I mentioned earlier very soon. AlbumArtManager is unusable for the moment.
Keep working ;)
I’m having the same problem as deomega
Is there any reason why this addon doesn’t (or a way to make this addon do this) simply just read the album art from the file’s tag? This would be handy for a number of reasons.
#1
- All of my audio files are tagged with embedded album artMany of my albums (see the recent online releases of albums by Nine Inch Nails) have different “art” for each track, making a single cover counter to the intent of the artist.#2 -
Sorry for the unintentional “strike-through” in the above post. Shame on me for not using the “Preview” function before posting!
@deomega – Yes there are some issues with the backend right now, that cause problems showing the album art, I am working on that as much as possible.
@Julien1311 – That’s great! You can send me the folder with the .properties and .dtd file in it (can’t remember what the french folder is, en-US is the default) and I can put it in the extension :).
@jdhas – That is a good idea, I will have to see how I can implement a per track system, I think the autoscanning would not be able to handle that. Also metadata reading is coming and I will be sure to keep the cover per track in mind for that.
Thanks for all your comments, I am working hard to get a nice stable release of 1.4 out for all of you to enjoy :)
Hi stevo,
The mail steven@songbirdnest.com seems to be down
Is there really no way to choose the album cover from a file or am I just missing it?
Has anybody gotten this addon to work? My icon just spins and spins and I never get any covers to show up. I’m about ready to give up on Songbird because this is the most important thing for me.
yay !
Hooray, it works again!
A couple things to note, album names with special characters still seem to cause the fetcher to barf. Notably, ? : () seem to kill the amazon fetcher, I have yet to grab the art manually and associate it to make sure the filesystem fetcher likes it. I think you mentioned you were planning on adding name mangling for special characters, probably a good idea.
If you’re trying to download album art and it seems to be stuck on an album, right-click and select “Clear artwork” (or whatnot) and it goes on to the next albim.
@specific I think the special characters should now work in 1.4.1 I tested it on windows with ? \ | * etc and they are now all converted to _. Enjoy! :)
Hey there,
Nice work on the side of your main development. I’m impressed!
When I click the Preferences button, it opens the addon’s preferences window behind the album art manager window. It took me a while to realise it was actually doing something – for quite some time I thought it was broken :oP
Also, is there any way to change it to display albums sorted by artist, not album name?
Songbird 0.6rc3, Ubuntu 8.04 64bit
nice work =)
V 1.4.1 works like a charm on WindowsXP SP3 on SB 0.6rc3
Alright—works much better in RC3! The file system auto-fetcher still doesn’t seem to be working though. Is there a specific naming convention that it is expecting, or does it conform to what’s in the preferences? I have .png files in the album directory named as album.png. There’s no metadata embedded in the tags. Thanks!
@sonicmaker – I am working on that feature, sorting and filtering in the manager window.
@ALU – Thanks!
@jsd290 – it follows the preferences right now, I am looking at expanding the filefetcher so it will search for all images in a particular order, for now you could set coverformat to album and it will find album.png
stevo,
Any plans to allow artwork to be all installed in one folder? Also, for the addon to read the contents of a folder before attempting to download them all.
I’m migrating from J.River Media Center, and have already collected most of the artwork (~1700 images) for my music in one folder, so I’d like to reuse it.
P.S. Great work on this addon – very slick. :)
@MonoApe – You can indicate what folder to search for cover art and what names the files should have, check in the preferences dialog under the album art manager.
Duh. That was obvious. Note to self: open eyes before posting.
When I right-click an album and choose, “Get artwork from file” all it does is tell me it’s searching. I’m not exactly what it is searching because it never allowed me to tell it where the file is located at for the program to use as the album art. Any way I could manually download an album cover and then set it to the corresponding cover?
http://www.songbirdnest.com/node/3258
@Maxo that is odd, when you select Get artwork from file it should pop up a file picker dialog that will allow you to pick any image. can you check the error console to see if anything comes up?
I’m seeing the same thing Maxo is. Also, when I tell it to get the artwork from Amazon, it never finds anything and never returns an error. Or anything at all. The spinner just spins forever. There’s nothing in the error console, either.
help me…it is not working.
i get the same image for all the albums!!
why??
what should i do?
p.s. i’m using ubuntu hardy
The same thing as Maxo here!!
- No cover is showing except for one album which has a “cover.jpg” file inside the folder.
- Can’t download cover from Amazon, it keeps spinning and nothing is downloades
- No file picker dialog is shown when trying to get the cover from file. (I’ve already assigned one folder for all my covers and specified the file extension and format).
- The error console shows this:

—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—I hope you could fix it, I’m sure I’m gonna love this add on!!!
Cheers!
I like the track change pop up notification with the the album art, but I am wondering:
Is it possible to change the size of the album art in the pop up?
Thanks for a great add-on!
So far I am able to successfully select and apply chosen artwork, by browsing on my computer, to the album.
The only problem I have run into is the artwork only shows a random select few of tracks (on the mini preview on the side bar) when I set art for the whole album.
I’m sure other people have mentioned similar problems, but I thought I would just give you a heads up. I’m REALLY happy you have a great start on this feature- Being a huge doujin music fan, I love the cover art for the albums and always organize it that way (before I converted to Songbird- best move of my life).
I can’t wait to enjoy a perfected version of this :) Thanks for all your hard work!
OH WAIT. I found out what the problem is. I have multiple artists for one album, and the art only shows up for
oneof those artists as a result.Just my two cents.
Hey, cool Addon, and coupled with the MediaFlow Addon has converted me from Rhythembox to Songbird.
Would love it if you could get the album art from the ID3 tags. I have lots of obscure stuff in my MP3 collection which wouldn’t be found on Amazon etc so would love this feature. Pretty much every file in my collection has the cover art in the ID3 (took ages to tag) so it would be much appreciated.
Keep up the amazing work!
Hi, I think this add-on is a great idea, but i cant use it :( I got it to be able to use MediaFlash but neither works out for me. Here is what happens, when I use “get from amazon” it changes all or most of my albums to the one I select, they all get the same cover. Also when i use “clear artwork” it does nothing…
Any thoughts to solve this?
I meant MediaFlow… :P
Oh and im using Songbird 0.5 on Windows XP Professional SP3. (Sorry for the number of consecutive posts).
Here’s a bit of a problem.
I have a rather extensive library, and a good portion of it has been accessed by many different programs over many years. Most of the albums in the library have artwork either in the music folders themselves, or embedded within the metadata of the music files themselves. I would like to access this information rather than fetch data from a remote location.
However, the Art Manager isn’t finding the album covers in the folders or the files, and I cannot, for the life of me, find a configuration location that makes it possible to find these covers. I can go in and manually configure the 200 plus albums (a hundred and fifty of which can’t find covers) but I have songbird installed on multiple computers and multiple operating systems. That’s a lot of duplication of effort.
If I can’t configure Art Manager to find the art on the local systems, can I take the manually configured data and copy it to the other systems running Songbird? Where is this data located? Any help would be appreciated.
-RAnthony
Is there any way to fetch album art from discogs since it has a rather extensive database of covers and album art especially for vinyl releases which is hard to find any where else? btw I have no Javascript experience.
After a bit of experimentation (and a more thorough reading of earlier posts) I think I can narrow my request down a bit. Wildcards. I think the ability to use wildcard characters would be a benefit. Most of my music folders have a single image in them, but that image is a random alpha-numeric, or isn’t named in the convention that is specified in the preferences dialog. If Album Art Manager could just be told to accept the first image it found in the music folder, that would be a great time savings.
I still would like to know where the information on album images is stored, I’d like to test copying a set up library file from one OS to another.
Updated to version 0.6 all problems solved…
Love the discogs idea squaredancer! :o)
I have the same issue than ranthony. Are you on Vista 64 ?
Running Songbird 0.6 on Windows XP SP2 and Ubuntu 8.04. Sorry about that. I might even install it on the Macbook here shortly, just for a laugh.
I sort of resolved the ‘problem’ although it’s going to require renaming image files through most of the library to fix. Which is why I suggested the ability to use wildcard characters in the preferences dialog (that does not appear to work) so that the addon just uses whatever image file is found in the music folder.
Installed 0.6 on Ubuntu Hardy Heron and after initial import the first thing I did was install Album Art Manager and restart. However, none of the album art will download—I have zero covers. I have also tried the June 18 nightly build of Songbird, following the same process and get the same result.
Is this add-on broken?
I use it also at work on XP SP3 and here it works ( both for some files and with my iPod ). Same files, different results. I might try it again at home, I’ll install the plugin before importing the collection.
@Squaredancer, I have written a Discogs Fetcher addon for the Album Art Manager. You can get it from http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addons/1226
I’ve not tested it much but let me know how you get on.
I’m running Songbird/0.6 on mac Os X 10.5.3 and the last version of Album Art Manager is not working properly. It doesn’t show any cover
even those that I’ve gotand both Discogs and Last.fm Fetcher seem not work at all. Just in case, I got the following at the Error Console:Error: sbAlbumArtService: [ERROR] – Unable to convert chrome://albumartmanager/skin/no-cover.png to URI
Source File: file:///Users/nachoroman/Library/Application%20Support/Songbird2/Profiles/qseop9ji.default/extensions/albumartmanager@songbirdnest.com/components/sbAlbumArtService.js
Line: 119
I hope this comment helps you and me ;)
P.S.: Sorry for my primitive English.
Sorry I didn’t that ”- -” means del tag in this input area. So, Album Art Manager doesn’t show those cover that I’ve already got on my computer…
Still fairly buggy. For instance, i clear the artwork from the album, then try to add the artwork from “file system” as i have hard copies of all my artwork. Anyway, with some albums it will work, then on others when i add artwork the album becomes invisible in mediaflow.
It would be great too if it worked like iTunes where it keeps the dimensions of the image you are using rather than squashing it to fit the dimensions you have set. For example, i like to use movie posters for any Soundtracks i have. Which are rectangular. Not a huge deal but might be something to consider addding, if possible of course.
Great work though. Thanks!!
Bit off-topic. But how abpout adding artwork through the metadata? Could that ever work?
I’m not having much luck with this at all. When I start Album Art Manager it says loading albums for ever and doesn’t actually get anywhere.
Can anyone help me get it working?
I’m running Songbird 0.6 on Ubuntu 32 bit.
Hi, I have precisely the same problem as nchroman above. When I first open album art manager, in rightclicking on a (empty) album cover I get only the “clear artwork option”. If I go to the preferences and open the “Fetcher priority” it is empty. If I then “reset” it, and then reopen it, the fetchers appear, and I get back the other options when right-clicking on the covers. But then, trying to fetch missing covers fails, as well as trying to upload jpegs of covers I have on disk. Error console gives the same error nchorman mentions. Trying to upload a cover from file system produces instead:
Error: this._ioService is undefined

This on Mac os X 10.5.3 songbird 0.6 …
Thank you!
is there a place to formally report a bug ? the album art manager seems to fail on every artist/albums containing accentuated characters ( say, björk for instance ). other than that great job :)
PS: after preview, even this website seems to choke on accents; read bjork instead of björk …
It would be nice to choose if i want to fetch over internet or not even save that file. I frequently search a good album cover, and tag my albums correctly. But for some reason, ABM, choose to download over to show the one taggeds, and those that searchs are really with a poor quality, most of them.
Good work here
Hey Stevo. I’m a big fan of your addon and think the future features you propose are all great ideas. Something that I’d love to see is when you click the cover art in the “service pane bottom” could it open the original, unscaled image? Much like the Album Art Manager window does already.
Keep up the good work! :o)
Congrats, stevo! Great work!
Finally a media player with an album art manager, that allows me to change the folder, where I save all my album art.
I love your addon!!!
Just some little issues I had with the album art manager:
- it doesn’t work with album art that has a semicolon in its file name.
- it would be nice to have the file format field “album artist” for the cover file format.
- Since the albums are sorted just by “Album” in the album art manager, there appears only 1 album, when I have two artist with the same album name. For example it doesn’t differ between “Artist A – Greatest Hits” and “Artist B – Greatest Hits”. So it would be great to have “Artist – Album” or “Album (Artist)” in the album art manager. (Ihope I have expressed myself understandable :-))
However: thank you for the great work!! Keep it up, please!
@moribund – Thanks for your enthusiasm :)
1. I will check into the semicolon problem :).
2. the format field can be changed to “album artist” if you want, check the preferences.
3. I have heard of the problem with multiple album names I will be checking into that when I can :) Thanks.
Hm, but what’s the correct tag name for “album artist”?
I’ve tried album artist, album-artist, album_artist, albumartist and band.
None of them worked :-(
I like the idea of this extension but it would be great if this ext could grab the album cover from the mp3 tag as well or check their first. If its suppose to do this its not!
Not sure if your familiar with Jajuk, but its features regarding Album Art covers and managment are awesome. I would love to see the features of this built in with Songbird. Jajuk is a Java program so I am sure its possible.
@moribund try “album artist” without the ”’s
@rilloyd that will be coming in Songbird 0.7 (the backend currently does not have support for reading images from metadata.)
Well, actually I’ve written them with ’s insteat of ”’s (like the other file format fields).
I’ve tried your idea and it still doesn’t work.
The filename I get now are something like “album artist – Greatest Hits” or “album artist – Live in New York”.
Anyway. That’s just a very small thing.
I’ll just stay with %artist – Album.
:-))
@moribund ha I appoligize, the post seems to strip out the percent signs :P try %album% %artist% instead.
Noticed a very small, peculiar, and seemingly benign bug. With only 1 album in the Library, it will not show up in the manager window or search for covers. As soon as there are 2 albums, it works as intended. I played with it a bit, and the “requirements” it seems for the “2” albums would be any 2 different “album” tags. i.e. You could have 5 songs, 4 with an album tag and one with none and it won’t work… however you only need 2 songs with different album tags for it to work.
Not really a problem affecting usage, but interesting. Don’t know if this is just an accepted side effect with the way it’s coded, but wanted to point it out.
I created an account just to post this comment. For anyone that already has all their album art in the album folders as folder.jpg, DO NOT install this add-on. I installed it because it was a required component to MediaFlow, and the next thing I know it has deleted a large portion of my album art and has started trying to automatically replace it. Every single folder in my library contained a folder.jpg up until this point, but now over half of my library is missing folder.jpg album art. This add-on has essentially ruined what took me hours and hours to complete.
I am so disgusted with this, I never asked this add-on to delete/replace my existing album art – yet when I restart Songbird that’s exactly what it starts doing. This thing might be great for people who have no album art, but for people like me who already took the time to get high quality album art for everything in their library….it takes away time that I can never get back.
Let me paint a picture for you…..You’re sick of Winamp and all the stupid crap that comes with it. You decide to look for alternatives. You come across Songbird, and are drawn by the showcase of Mediaflow on the homepage. You download and install Songbird and the required add-ons to check out Mediaflow (ie, Album Art Manager), hoping to finally rid yourself of the corporate slop that is Winamp. You restart Songbird, and discover that this add-on has begun to delete all your album art and re-acquire it from it’s own fetchers. I am beyond sorry that I ever installed Songbird, Mediaflow, and this add-on. I’ve uninstalled all 3.
@trunk8 I am sorry that you feel that way, this extension does not actually delete any files, it only overwrites files in particular cases. By default the extension will check if a album has a cover, if it does not then it will search for a cover in the following order:
1. Scan file system for existing image files (cover.jpg, folder.jpg, etc) in the folder of the media item.
2. Scan the metadata of the mediaitem for an image (err not until next version sorry)
3. Scan Amazon and download the first image found to the same folder as the mediaitem with a file name of folder. + the extension of the image (png, jpg, etc)
I am not sure how it would have "deleted" the folder.jpg since it does not write to folder.jpg unless specified by the user under preferences.
@stevo
I want to apologize, I found the cause when I sat down this morning to start re-doing my album art. Multiple media players on my PC were still able to see album art from folders that had no Folder.jpg (I'm displaying hidden files too, they are not hidden). So, I got curious and went to a folder with no Folder.jpg and added a "\Folder.jpg" in the Explorer location bar...and bam! The image viewer launches with the album art. So, the art is still there....but can't be seen through explorer or even with the "dir" command at a command prompt (these are the things I tried before posting my initial comment).
I searched around on google and found that sometimes media players will flag folder.jpg files as Windows system files, and when I enable viewing of system files in the Folder Options I can see the Folder.jpg files again. I'm sure this was nothing your add-on did, and I'm sorry for posting my initial comment.
On a somewhat related note, it seems that Album Art Manager does not recognize any of my album art. Again, every folder contains a Folder.jpg (though now I know that some are flagged as system files). But even when I check an album that contains Folder.jpg that is NOT a system file, Album Art Manager doesn't see that there is art. Why would this be? If you can't tell already, I don't want AAM to modify my album art in any way or even add to it, I just want it to use the album art I already have in place.
Good addon! But it doesn't support chinese names. Would you please add support for chinese names? I found that if chinese names is used in the path of the album cover, the cover cannot be shown.
I am very happy about this addon, but still... Just wish it would pick up my itunes album art. I spent so much time gathering them, but somehow it is not getting them ALL. It has made many replacements.
Wondering if anyone has found a good way for the folder.jpg to be automatically recognized by AAM.
This Addon doesn't work with the latest 0.7 nightly's. Why? I don`t know. Dev's? Please look at this...
Tyler out!

@deomega I think that will be supported in a future version of the iTunes library importer :)
@sailhobie the file fetcher should be doing that, version 1.5 will have better support for priorites of fetchers and also disabling them. the file fetcher should detect folder, cover and other files in the detection.
@tylerstyle yes it is broken for 0.7 due to the location of a file being changed for properties :(. This will be fixed for 1.5
Thanks again to all for your support and great ideas!
Just wanted to say thanks - i love this!
One quick suggestion (if its even possible???) is to get it to read
embedded cover art. I used to use media mokey and it gave the option to embed your coverart instead of storing it on your harddrive - so I did
so. It would be nice not to have to fetch new coverart if yours could
somehow pick it up... but either way - Thanks!!!!!
@Stevo
HUge relief, huge relief. Any idea on the 'possible' time frame?
Thank you very much.. and again, amazing product.
It seems that covers are being saved, as I require, in the album location but that is on a server and the covers are not being retrieved across the LAN. The Manager knows it has found them but, like Songbird, shows nothing. Perhaps it can't read back the fullPath correctly.
If I change the storage location to the local machine and then right-click on some blank placeholders in the Manager (ie those for which a cover has been found and saved) to store a few covers on the local machine then those covers are handled and displayed as one would hope.
Songbird 0.6.1
(new user who last looked at Songbird_0_1_1b My, my, how things have changed!)
Hey Stevo, Just wanted to say that I'm trying the latest nightly of Version 1.5 and it rocks! It's so good to have the covers coming from the Meta data... This is one of the main things I've always wanted from Songbird, so thanks very much!
Was just wondering..can Album art manager add downloaded cover directly to meta data instead of downloading ? I think recent nightly allows you to add cover in meta data. Not an expert just thinking. cos it takes lots of time to fetch covers when i start SB.
Hiya,
Question about this add on's future- will it ever be possible to edit the album art track-by track? For instance, in the booklet of one album I have, each song has a picture that goes with it. I'd like to be able to have each picture with each individual song.
Thanks for the add-on, though! It's great :)
how can i get 1.5 version. I am on nightly.
@jigarshah - did you get the nightly build of the Album Art Manager addon too? You can get it from the Nightly Add-ons section at http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Developer/Articles/Builds/Nightly_Builds
Got 1.5. Looks great.
- But i have an funny issue. Now Album Art Manager adds "Mamma Mia" or "Akon" to almost all albums which it does not find appropriate cover.
- And clear albumart does not work. it does not clear. If i open song in meta data editor then it works. But again if i say fetch missing albumart, It again gets those "Mamma Mia" or "Akon". This never used to happen with 1.4
- Is it possible to add albumart directly to meta data so that other players can also detect it ? I mean without storing image in album folder.
Hi!
I'm new to Songbird, installed it today. What I've seen 'till now really looks very great!!!
Now I tried to install the Album Art Manager. I've got the Songbird version 0.7.0rc1 installed. As written in the history above AAM v1.4* is not compatible with it. So I tried the Nightly Builds, also not compatible.
Is there a compatible version out there? If not, when will it come? Dose it make sense to uninstall my birdie and downgrade?
Is there any way to turn off album-art fetching?
Thanks all for your comments, we are working hard on Songbird so this Add on has had very little love lately :) Don't worry I will get back on it as soon as I have time.
@andy - Yes it is now fetching from metadata :)
@Psyrate - I have been thinking about that as well as allowing the user to select from multiple images available. The fetching is now not included, Songbird now does this for metadata. So you will have to use the Album Art manager window to get covers.
Is this not yet compatible with .7.0 rc1?
@stevo
This is still not compatible with 0.7... look like you mess up your install.rdf file !
yes please make this compatible with 0.7 rc2!
I keep .jpgs of album art locally within the album folder. Is there an easy way I can point to these files instead of running fetch?
Please update to 0.7 rc3 ;)
Although the change comment for 1.5.4pre+dev is "Set minVersion to 0.7pre" in the install.rdf it is actually:
<em:minversion>0.8.0pre</em:minversion>
<em:maxversion>0.8.0rc1</em:maxversion>
meaning that 0.7.0 users can't use it. Can you fix this please?
Rj :-)
Is there any word on when a 0.7-compatible version will be available? I've been unable to use this extension ever since I upgraded from 0.6.1 to 0.7rc1. Is there a DIY fix for the incorrect version thread, or does it need to be done by the author?
Ditto what the above commentors have said. I'd love to use it too :) Just need one compatible with 0.7 beta
@GetMKWearMKFly and @joelgoodman
I am currently working on 1.6 which has huge improvements over the 1.5 version. This will be out soon, sorry for the delay.
not work with 0.7.0 :(
damnnn!!! i want to try this extension plzz (0.7.0)
It seems to fectch only 1 cover for a directory, but my librairy isn't well sorted so i have wrong cover for some files ...
but it's a very good add-on!
Can you get this extension updated for 0.7? I really want to use MediaFlow!
Looking forward to update for 0.7......
Thanks, Stevo. Looking forward to it!
@ soren: I'm pretty sure MediaFlow works on 0.7.0 without the AAM. It's just the cover-fetchers that require this to work properly, so if you've got album art saved for any of your music, it should show up just fine in MediaFlow.
I'm also waiting for the 0.7.0 update. Not because of MediaFlow, but because songbird doesn't seem to recognize my folder.jpg cover art. eMusic saves its cover art as folder.jpg and I'm not going to waste time adapting my collection to something different .. :)
Looking forward to testing this thing out.
yep the folder.jpg feature would be great instead of the tag.
much faster.
MediaFlow does work without AAM, but I don't have saved album artwork for my music. So every album has a generic SVG of a CD. =(
I know you are working hard on it Stevo, but just so you know, this is really essential to songbird, from my perspective. Gotta have a manager/fetcher. Songbird 7 and Mediaflow only seem to see what one already has... and not even all of what one has.
OH My goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE YOU MAN! Thanks a MILLION.
Thx for your work.
Nevertheless I have a strange issue since I installed the 0.7 release.
Indeed I can't press the button "fetch missing covers" but I can right click on the album and push "get artwork on..."
As I have more than 800 albums, it's not doable one by one...
I run ubuntu by the way
Thx
How can i stop scanning my 3000 albums, i need a manually selection =)
thanks!!
Google image woud be great too as covers fetchers.
great work !
but the preferences and the notification dont't work (SB 0.7 WinXP)
Hey Steveo, any chance you can give me some pointers to update the Discogs fetcher I wrote for AAM 2.0? Or would I be best to wait until you have updated the Last.FM one and copy sections of that?
Many thanks
@popey_tgl Thanks, yes right now the Fetch Missing Covers button is disabled until I get that working properly :). Should be soon though, see the Description notes.
@abo Album Art Manager no longer scans your library for missing covers, that is handled by a part of Songbird now called sbIMetadataImageScanner. That said you can set the preference in about:config "songbird.metadataimagescanner.interval" to a high number like 60000 which is one minute (its in milliseconds so 1000 = 1 second). Then it won't scan as often and will not be noticeable.
@Gwadaboy Thanks for the idea, I will see what I can do after I fix the Last.FM fetcher :).
@ALU The notification has been removed (See the Notify Me add on http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addons/1301) Not sure about the preferences, I will double check that.
@Slate8 Yeah I will fix that one up today have post it for you :). I will put some more documentation in it as well.
Hey Stevo, I don't like it, that album-art-manager sets its own no-cover.png when it doesn't find a cover. (I dont like the empty cd-case, too)
Why not just leave it blank, so feathers default shows up?
Would be great, if you could change this.
i already have a "folder.jpg" in each album folder.
How to make aam work with them ?
@gwadaboy: right-click on an album-cover (in the manager) and click "get artwork from file-system". Eventually you have to "Clear" the album cover first (if the album already has a cover)
thanks but i have more than 800 album lol.
i should have said "automatically".
@gwadaboy: lol. Then it will be almost like playing ego-shooter ;-)
If you don't like such a challenge, you'll have to wait to one of the next updates, because "fetch missing covers" is currently disabled (see comments above).
Ok! But the "Fetch Missing Covers" button is disable for me. :S Can you explain me? My album library its completely loaded... thanks!
Ok, i have read that its disable "by factory"
Thnks!
Its really cool again. I can filter by artist. But i have a small issue with this. In India Movies have lots of songs by various artist. So if i can filter cover by Album (similar to artist you have) would be really great.
Just one more question I raised this earlier. I see 400 albums in my library but in ARM it does not show all of them whats the reason for this ?
@jigarshah If you type in the album name into the search box that will filter by artist/album so that should give you what you want.
I am not sure why you would be missing albums unless they have no title.
My "Fetch Album Cover" button is also disabled.
and why aam or mediaflow or ... have to reload every albumt art everytime?
Yeah there must be some kind of cache or something to keep AAM from reloading all the albums every time it's launched. It's annoying to have to wait for all the albums to load every time I need to find one album.
Also for some reason AAM can't save album arts on NTFS partitions, it worked before the songbird 0.7 upgrade. Maybe it's more of a songbird issue ?
Hi,
I'd like to report a rather unexpected behaviour of this addon. I store my album art images in a file called "%album% - front.jpg" (sometimes I have more albums in one folder). Sometimes I also have images like "%album% - back.jpg" or "%album% - CD.jpg". Now if I let the addon locate the cover on my filesystem, it takes the first image from album's directory (usually the back cover) and overwrites (without asking!) the original "%album% - front.jpg" image.
I would like to see a user defined list of files to look for in a defined order. For example "%album% - front.jpg, cover.jpg, %artist%.jpg, *.jpg". Also never overwrite any files without asking.
i think there will be an update to choose witch (wich) image you want.
HELP! Fetch covers button is disabled? Please help solve this...
Hi steve I think the missing albums problem could be to do with special characters. For me it misses the only album I have that starts with a special character
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86nima
Thanks!
I used this in version .6 without trouble, but since upgrading to .7, I've had a lot of issues (with several things, not just AAM). Album Art Manager no longer works, plain and simple. Even when I direct it to the album art folder that it created in the last version, it doesn't recognize any of the images. Fetch Missing Covers is disabled for me as well, and I cannot search for art on individual albums, either. (Well, I CAN, but nothing ever happens; it just eternally loads.)
I am getting several console errors concerning sbCoverDownloader.js, but this only occurs when I run AAM, rather than let it work by itself in the bottom left panel.
I have all my artwork as "folder.jpg" and the only way to Songbird/Album Art Manager to show them is to go album by album and Right-Click » Get artwork from File System".
As you can imagine, album by album is a pain in the...
The "Fetch Missing Covers" button is disable and I don't understand why. How can I fetch all the covers from "folder.jpg"? One thing though, for the albums which don't have a "folder.jpg" I don't want the cover to be downloaded from any other website.
How can I get this done?
I forgot about a couple of suggestions:
1) Is it possible to display the Album Art Manager window in a tab instead of it's own dialog window?
2) Make the vertical separator (the thing that separates the artist names from the album artworks) look like the ones in Songbird. It will look much better.
3) The disc design when there are no album artwork is really rough/sharp/pixelated. The one in Songbird looks much better, more soft, more anti-aliased. Improve the "disc" rendering.
4) Make the whole thing faster... Loading the albums and also chaging the split view size is a bit slow.
That's it for now...
@all Yes the fetch covers button is disabled, this code has not been completed for the new version yet.
@vlada I am not sure why it would be overwriting your images, when an image is saved it has 3 different places it save it. 1. is in the profile folder under artwork, this one creates special names for the files based on the image data. 2. is in the location of item, this is saved as specified in the format cover field (defaulting to %artist% - %album%. 3. is where specified in the preferences and the file is saved as specified in the format cover field.
@Pez That is unexpected since I use the file/folder/track/etc names from the item information so if it displays in the playlist it should work in AAM. I can check on that though, thanks for the example :).
@leliathomas if you could post those error messages that would be very helpful, I will see what I can do. There have been a lot of changes to this version for various reasons (some Songbird changes, adding ability to filter etc) so it will take me a couple minor versions to get things working back the way they were.
@Nazgulled I have thought of displaying it in a tab, and I may look into that for future versions once I get the kinks ironed out. Good call on the splitter, it does look different so I will work on styling that the same as Songbird. The disc design is actually the same image as what is used in the Album Art display pane. I am working on making it faster, I had to change over to a different way of loading in order to allow for filtering and now need to work on the performace.
Thank you all for your suggestions and concerns, I will work on them as quickly as possible and hope to get this working for everyone :).
Stevo.
What about my problem? Did you forgot about it? ;)
Keep up the good work :)
I have another question... I was trying to find an e-mail or something to contact you personally but I couldn't find one and I'm posting this here.
I don't have any knowledge in Add-ons and you seem to do, specially in this album cover art area...
I was wondering if it isn't possible to change the default Songbird behavior to automatically get the covers from folder.jpg or cover.jpg that's inside the album folder. I'm not saying to change this Add-on, I'm talking about a new one...
A single Add-on that it's sole porpose would be to simply load the cover files from the file system. A simple function that, in my opinion, should have been built in on Songbird. Lots of other media players do this already.
Do you think this would be easy to do?
change priority in the option (does'nt work for the moment).
Hide album who already have an album art would be great too.
Thanks so much, stevo. Here are the errors I'm getting.
These errors are received when I have the Album Art Manager window open and try to retrieve an album cover by right clicking and getting artwork from one of the art cover providers or from the file system.

Also might be important for me to mention that, since this release, I have no art covers at all. It is not recognizing previously downloaded and saved ones, either, even though I have pointed it to the folder I use for album art.
Thanks so much for putting your effort into this. It's greatly adored and appreciated. :)
@ stevo
Yes it has title. And this issue is there since past lot of versions. I am not sure whats wrong. You want some debug logs/profile data etc? I see 450 albums in FilterPane view. But on AAM i see 447. Don't know why.
Thanks again.
Hi stevo. How do i get nightly for AAM ?
I think http://developer.songbirdnest.com/nightly/addons/linux/i686/ no longer has recent nightly. I see 1.5.4 there still.
@jigarshah Sorry there are no longer any nightlies for this add on, it is only supported through the add ons site now.
I will continue to check into why not all the albums are showing up.
@stevo: Thanks for your answer. I'll try to describe my problem in more details. Those are 2 different problems which cause the overwriting of my AA images. I store my album images in the same directory where the songs are located. The location of the file is %path_to_song%\%album% - front.jpg. Quite often I also have back covers stored in %path_to_song%\%album% - back.jpg. I want AAM to store the covers with the same naming scheme. This is not a problem. But it overwrites the already existing images. This is the first problem - AAM shouldn't overwrite already existing files.
The second problem is that if i let AAM fetch covers from my drive, it won't look for %path_to_song%\%album% - front.jpg but instead of it it will take the first picture from %path_to_song% directory (which is usually the back cover).
So these two problems will end up in the situation that AAM overwrites my front covers with back covers. Is it already clear?
Now I discovered another issue. I use the naming %album% - front.jpg because sometimes I have more albums in one directory. AAM will fetch only one cover per directory and use it for all albums.
hey, question
when i open up the addon i can't click the 'fetch missing covers' button, it just doesn't seem to highlight or respond to anything, i can get the album covers if i go through and right click and select get album cover for each one, but i'v got 1300 albums, don't fancy doing that, other than a last resort.
Hi stevo,
I decided to test the special characters causing the missing albums theory by recording a few mp3s and editing the details so that it said they came from albums titled just as special characters. There's definatly a problem with uppercase Æ as it didn't find that either in this test or in the album I linked to above. Suprising though it worked just fine for lowercase æ and the greek letters α and β. Those were the only ones I tried but I'd guess there must be other cases like Æ that could explain the the missing albums problem.
Thanks
I just tried it with a couple more greek letters, it found uppercase omega (Ω) but not lowercase omega (ω) and for some reason it's now found Æ though not the album starting with that I linked to above. Bizzare.
I am still getting the same problem as listed above. If I try to get from file system nothing happens and nothing shows up in the error console. If I try to get it from amazon I get the following:
Error: sbCoverDownloader: [ERROR] - Failed to extract the extension from : - TypeError: aURI.match(/\.[a-zA-Z0-9]+$/) is null

As a test I blew away my profile and started anew. I get the same problem with the same messages in the error console. This is on Ubuntu Gutsy and Songbird 0.7.
For some reason, the album X&Y by Coldplay doesn't show up in my Album Art Manager. Is this because of the ampersand or something?
Stevo,
This is filed on Get Satisfaction:
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/show_album_art_for_selected_item?utm_content=topic_link&utm_medium=email&utm_source=new_topic
Show album art for selected item.
Currently only playing items show album art. being able to show it when selected would be sweet.
Hi! I managed all my albuns in iTunes (I had to do it because I need it to sync with my iTouch) and I assigned album covers for all my albuns. But some of them appears ok here on songbird (with the addon) and some don´t, somebody knows what can it be? What am I doing wrong?
Do you have a ETA release date on version 2.1. Songbird isn't the same without your add-on!
Hi steve
I think there's a problem with this addon that is making some users to have a system freeze.
After I've disabled this addon, I havent have any more system freezes.
Here's the getsatisfaction.com track:
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/songbird_allways_freezes_on_ubuntu_while_playing_a_song
Hey, i got exactly the same problem on XP! I thought it was caused by my cheap onboard-graphics, thats why I didn't report earlier.
I have this problem with "album art manager" and with "album view"
Symptoms: Usually during the loading process, when the add-ons start displaying covers, my pc totally freeze. No movements on the screen, no ctrl-alt-del, can't even turn numlock on/off. No reactions at all. I have to do a hard reboot.
However, sometimes it doesn't freeze. I think it freeze about every 4-5th try. Now, that i know its not my graphic-chip, I will have an eye on it and look out for a pattern...
hey Stevo, do you have an ETC for enabling the fetcher?
I'm using Songbird 0.7 on Ubuntu 8, with Album Art Manager 2.0.2 and Last.FM Cover Fetcher 1.5.0.
Apart from the album art viewer in my side panel, I can't find the actual Album art manager, also it appears that the Last.FM Cover Fetcher doesn't work because I still don't have any album covers coming in, am I missing something here in how to use these add ons?
I did some testing on the system freeze. I now can reproduce it for my computer: If I scroll down the albums too fast (after all covers are loaded) i got that freeze. I ran a system-monitor beside songbird, and guess what? At the moment of the freeze, songbird needs more than 1.2GB(!) RAM. I have 1.5GB with shared memory. Same problem with "album view".
@atreiu, @sirdarckcat - Yes this is probably a problem, for both AAM and Album View I load "ALL" of the images for your albums, and this can take a lot of ram with the way xul works. So I have been working on only loading what albums you currently can see, this should remove this problem. I guess Mac is just much better an memory management :).
@mrlb - I am working as hard as I can on this add on and Songbird at the same time :). So I really don't have an ETC for enabling the fetch covers button :(.
@stevo: yes, this might be the problem, I've got some big album-jpegs (up to 800x800px). It's good to know, that you are working on it. :-)
@stevo - no sweat mate. I have noticed your name around the place associated with various plugins and within the songbird community and i just wanted to THANK YOU for all the work you are doing as it certainly does not go unnoticed by us. I look forward to seeing everything you give for the future and combined with songbird i know we are going to have one kick arse music/media manager-player...
hi stevo thanks for heads up. I wish Fetch missing cover gets implemented sooner.
Please think about list by albums column. With current artist. From where i can nightly for this addon?
HI,
I'm using SOngbird 0.7 and the version 2.0.2 of Albu m Art Manager, but when I ask to have the cover, it didn't find covers, I have all my covers with a "grecy CD" instead of the cover.
THe error message:
sbAlbumArtManager: _filterAlbums Called
sbAlbumArtManager: No albums in the list!
Thanx for you help
A great add-on and a huge time saver. I'm old-fashioned in that I like to actually purchase the physical media, then rip digital copies myself, which means I don't often get album art by default. Being able to query Amazon for the artwork may not get all of 'em, but it gets most of 'em.
I'm very much looking forward to the coming features allowing for custom queries and the ability to choose which one is the correct one when multiple matches are returned.
Thank you, stevo, for adding a great feature to a great media player.
great plugin, but somehow now working to well on my mac (os 10.5.4 / songbird 0.7)
the "fetch missing cover" button is always disabled.
another thing really great would be, if the album art manager wouldn't always automatically load my complete liste of albums, rather than maybe only the playlist / genre / list i selected.. takes for ever everytime i launch it.
improvement very very appreciated - as said, great addon :)
sorry - reading through the posts i see my "problem" has been discussed already..
ignore it :)
using songbird 0.7 on vista, and when I right click on any album and select "get artwork from amazon" the icon just spins indefinitely and never gets any album art. same thing with last.fm. so I tried "get artwork from file system" and nothing happens! is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
Hi!
Excellent add-on! But, the fetch from meta data is not working for me. I'm using Songbird 0.7.0 and AAM 2.0.2 on Mac OS Tiger, and have imported my iTunes library containing loads of songs with album art in the meta data. Yet, if I click on "Get artwork from Metadata" nothing happens..
Also, would it be possible to select more than one album at a time to fetch album art? I'm not looking forward to clicking about 2000 items ;)
p.s.: I saw someone mentioning fetching album art is not working when using USB drives. All my music is stored on an external drive connected via USB. Could that be the problem?
nice add-on! there's a bug when using 'get artwork from filesystem' it will often use one specific (false) cover. then i go to 'clear artwork' and to 'fetch artwork form amazon' and it will give me the wrong artwork from filesystem again. redoing the procedure one again will fix the artwork.
also PLEAAAASE ( ! ! ! ) make 'fetch missing covers' a top priority, because without it this add-on has hardly 10% of its usability!
Nice start but not very usable: all my covert art is on file system and to do this manually for each and every album is not realistic. I'll wait for another update and keep to my Itunes.
Nice add-on but a couple of requests from my own point of view. It would be nice to be able to remove a single artwork when there are multiple versions for an album instead of needing to clear all and then add them back in.
Secondly, is it possible to add a get album artwork from albumart.org? I've been using this for some more obscure albums: the size and quality of the covers seems superb.
i can't fetch my missing covers (the button is unavaible)
why?
@stevo
Dunno if this means anything, but I find that the smaller the album art manager window, the faster it fetches the artwork at startup. Is it then a bad idea to have the art load without images first when one launches album art manager, then show the images on completion??
Hey can we have to 1.0.0rc1? =)
Hi Stevo,
thanks for this add-on, I miss it on 1.0.0.RC1 so much that I force-installed it :p
Good luck in getting it into the core application.
Is there a way to set it to be done automaticly?
I'm getting the same problem as jokerigno. The spot for "Fetch Missing Covers" isn't working at all. The only way for me to actually GET the album artwork is to painstakingly right click each album spot, and then left click the part of the drop down for Last.fm. Its kind of annoying, so if you could help me through this... that would be nice ^^
could you make it working on 1.0 RC3??
very nice plugin... or add-on?
any way, would be really good if this plugin can recongize the folder.* or cover.* files in each directory son the CD cover is display immediately
Would be great if it would work for v 1.0
Any idea how to get it to work?
as said by the original maker of this addon, it will not work for Songbird v1.0+ because he has stopped working on it. However, I have used this addon throughout its lifetime and i must say, a VERY GOOD addon :P. RIP Album Art Manager RIP.
Very Good
so there isn't any possibility to use Album Manger in Songbird 1.0?!?
damn. i hope i'm wrong
No it doesn't appear so. I guess we need to wait for Mozilla to include this in an official release.
Bummer!
@All - Pretty much all of the functionality of the add on will be in the 1.1 release of songbird, also I have a Media View (Album View) that will display the albums in a grid, so this will pretty much replace the Album Art Manager Dialog with a Media View. I will work very hard on the core and the Album View add on for you all so that you have the Album Art Manager functionality back very soon :).
@krisdestrucion - Thanks for the prase :)
@Russ err Mozilla? We don't work for Mozilla, this is a Songbird add on for a Songbird product :).
Hey guys, I was wondering why I can't download this particular add-on. It says that it isn't compatible to Songbird.
the install button is grayed out, i cant download it
thank you so much work working so hard on returning album art manager's functionality to songbird. SB has the bones of a linux media platform champion, and its addons like this that really bring the functionality together. the SB team almost seems to be focusing on the windows platform more than us needing linux users. while they drag their feet fixing the linux bugs while implementing windows functionality, this in my opinion is one of if not the last big puzzle piece needed to really make this thing competitive.
look great
.
hm... i'm unable to install it. the button is greyed out. can somebody please help?
Please update this (and the discogs album fetcher) for sunbird 1.0.
i tried it myself, but I would need much more time for this than the actual creator. so please let us know if and when you update this.
sorry for the noise
kthxby
why can't I click on the "install" button?
If you read the text over the button carefully, you'll see that it says: "not compatible with your Songbird" version - hence the grey color!
Is this open source? If so, where can the source be found? I need a plugin of this type, so i'd like to start updating this if possible.
where do I get the plugin?
@Leefmc: You can get the source of the addon by downloading it with Firefox (right click on download --> save target as...). Then you have to rename the file from .xpi to .zip and extract it. There you have the source.
Would be nice if you update it!
@zeethrough: You have to click "Download" at the top of the page. This version isn't compatible to the newest version of Songbird...Maybe someone could update it.
Update for the newest songbird would be appreciated
I'm using Songbird 1.1.1 so I can't download the plugin (greyed) but I can't find it now integrated in Songbird 1.1 like stevo wrote he had mostly done in december 08. So am I to blind to find it (/View/Media Views I would assume) or is it not integrated yet?
Please make it compatible with 1.2.
Thank you
